スーパーマーケットチェーンが販売するサイダーの商品外観（と味付け）が自社の商品に酷似しているとして販売差し止めを求めたイギリスの会社の訴えは一旦は却下されたそうですが、控訴し、訴えが認められたそうです。

Cider producer Thatchers has successfully won an appeal in a long-running trademark battle with supermarket chain Aldi.

The Somerset company sued the supermarket chain in 2022 over claims Aldi had "copycatted" its Cloudy Lemon Cider in "taste and appearance".

Thatchers claimed Aldi's Taurus drink, released in 2022, had been "riding on the coat-tails" of Thatchers' reputation.

Last January the High Court in London dismissed Thatchers' case, but the latest hearing has led to a judge ruling in Thatchers' favour. Aldi has said it will appeal.

"riding on the coat-tails" of Thatchers' reputation

という表現があります。

ここで使われている、"ride on a person's the coat-tails"というのは慣用表現で、他人のおかげで成功する、利益にあずかる、といった意味です。

"coat-tail"（辞書ではハイフンが入らない、coattailというスペルの方が優勢のようです）とは、上着、コートの裾を指します。"coattails"と複数形ですが、一般的に複数形で用いられる単語のようです。燕尾服の裾のように2つに分かれているからでしょうか。

しかし、この裾に乗っかる、というのは変わった表現ではないでしょうか？

他人のコートの裾に物理的に「乗っかる」ことはありえませんが、自分では力を使わず、他人のコートの裾に乗っかり楽して移動する（！？）、というイメージでしょうか。

「乗る」という日本語からは、

タダ乗り

便乗

といった表現が思い浮かびます。

ところで、"coattail(s)"という表現は政治や選挙のコンテクストで使われることも多く、例えば、日本の選挙なんかでもそうですが、泡沫候補と呼ばれる人でも同じ所属政党の他の候補者の人気のお陰で当選することがありますが、そうした場合にこの表現が使われるようです。

以下の引用では、"presidential coattails"という表現について解説しています。

The term “coattail” did not fully emerge into common political parlance until the mid-20th century, associated mainly with presidential landslide elections that swept into office congressional candidates of the president’s party who likely would not have won on their own: think Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952, Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and Ronald Reagan in 1980. In each instance their overwhelming margins of victory bolstered their parties’ voting strengths in Congress.

やはり、"coattail(s)"は燕尾服のような立派な上着のことで、そうした装いのできる人の威光に乗っかるという意味合いなのだろうと思います。
