promoted outwards

当ブログの投稿にはタグには「クビ！」というものがありまして、クビ（解雇）を意味する英語表現を取り上げています。

久しぶりにそのコレクションに追加される表現に出会いました。

その表現ですが、

promoted outwards

というものです。

Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH and the world’s fifth richest man, has coined a new phrase for those who are being laid off — “being promoted outwards, so to speak.”

The French billionaire made the “promoted outwards” comment while discussing social media company META’s decision to lay off low-performing employees, according to Fortune.

Arnault, 75, claimed that those who lost their jobs are actually being “promoted” to better jobs at different companies.

"promote"は昇進、"outwards"は外部に（向かって）、という意味ですから、勤め先外へ昇進させられる、というのが字義通りの意味になります。

現勤務先よりもより良い外のポジションに昇進、とはその実際のところはどうか置くとして、皮肉な表現です。

以前取り上げた"manage out"に近い表現にも思われます。

私もそろそろ"promoted outwards"されそうな感が？！
