アメリカ人、英語国民はクッキーがお好きと見えて、"cookie"という言葉を使った表現をよく見かけます。（tough cookie、toss your cookies）

今日取り上げる"cookie jar"はクッキーを入れておく瓶の入れ物を指しますが、ヘソクリを隠す場所という意味もあります。以下引用する記事では、若い未婚の男女の関係において使われる俗語表現として使われています。

One of the many things that makes dating so difficult these days is that people oftentimes don’t want to commit.

With the help of dating apps, even after meeting someone they’re interested in, single people continue swiping to see their other options.

Unfortunately, there’s a name for that toxic trend: “cooking [sic]  jarring,” as explained by Forbes.

いわゆるマッチングアプリと呼ばれるものを通して男女が出会うというのが現代風ですが、「本命」とそうでない相手と同時進行でお付き合いするというのは当たり前なんでしょうか。本命でない方は"cookie jar"の中の多数のクッキーのひとつに準えられるのか、はたまたヘソクリよろしく、何かあった時の代わりとしてキープされるのか。

つまり、"significant other"ではなく、"one of them"の扱いという訳です。そういう扱いをすることを指して"cookie jarring"というそうで、誰しもそんな扱いは受けたくはないという話な訳です。
