promoted outwards

promoted outwards

Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH and the world’s fifth richest man, has coined a new phrase for those who are being laid off — “being promoted outwards, so to speak.”

The French billionaire made the “promoted outwards” comment while discussing social media company META’s decision to lay off low-performing employees, according to Fortune.

Arnault, 75, claimed that those who lost their jobs are actually being “promoted” to better jobs at different companies.
(Shane Galvin. World’s 5th richest man Bernard Arnault coins new phrase for being fired: ‘Promoted outwards’. New York Post. January 29, 2025.)

show the door

Elon Musk isn’t messing around. Twitter’s new owner said earlier this month that he would eliminate 75% of the social media company’s 7,500-person workforce once he took over. He already has shown several senior executives the door, including former Chief Executive Parag Agrawal, and the Washington Post reported on Monday he was starting with a quarter of the employee base. Writing up pink slips en masse will have a ripple effect across Silicon Valley.
(Axing the tweeps. Reuters. November 1, 2022.)

He already has shown several senior executives the door

― cashier

An Army Major has been cashiered from service and awarded three-month rigorous imprisonment and a woman officer of the same rank has been dismissed for allegedly having an affair.
(Two Majors sacked for having affair. The Tribune. February 13, 2020.)

The Navy has canned the officer in charge of the unit whose two small boats and 10 sailors were seized by Iran in January, marking the service’s first public disciplinary action in an international fracas that threatened the U.S.-Iran nuclear deal.
(Mark Thompson. The U.S. Navy Has Cashiered the Commander in Charge of Boats Seized by Iran. Time. May 12, 2016.)

can

Amazon has fired the worker at its Staten Island warehouse who organized a walkout on Monday to demand greater protections from the company amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Chris Smalls, 31, a management assistant at the facility, told The Post he was canned in a phone call following Monday afternoon’s strike.

He and dozens of other employees at the Bloomfield warehouse walked off the job to demand Amazon temporarily close and clean the facility after a worker tested positive for COVID-19 there last week.
(Tamar Lapin. Amazon fires worker who organized strike over coronavirus response. New York Post. March 30, 2020.)

payroll

Former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, detained for the past five weeks on charges he underreported his income, will spend Christmas and New Year's Eve in a Tokyo jail cell.

The Tokyo District Court ruled Sunday that Ghosn can be held for a further 10 days without bail. The decision follows his rearrest on Friday on additional allegations of breach of trust. Japanese prosecutors petitioned the court to extend the executive's detention and restrict bail.

Since his arrest on November 19, Ghosn has been fired as chairman by both Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors.

Renault has appointed interim management but kept Ghosn on the payroll.
(Andrew Grainer. Carlos Ghosn will spend Christmas in a Tokyo jail cell. CNN. December 23, 2018.)

(Renault) kept Ghosn on the payroll

They cut him from their payroll.

let go

Barnes & Noble

CEO Demos Parneros will not be paid severance and will be removed from the board immediately, the bookstore chain said late Tuesday. Barnes & Noble said the board was advised by a law firm in deciding to fire Parneros.

The company did not announce a reason for the firing. It said only that the CEO was not let go because of any disagreement about "financial reporting, policies or practices or any potential fraud relating thereto."

The company also reaffirmed its profit guidance for the current fiscal year. A spokesperson had no further comment.
(Chris Isidore. Barnes & Noble fires CEO for violating company policy. CNN. July 3, 2018.)

let go

Amazon is laying off employees in the "low hundreds" in an effort to shift head count allocation to businesses that are growing, CNBC has learned.

The Seattle Times first reported that Amazon was laying off "hundreds" of employees and "managing out" others as the company consolidates its retail operations.
(Amazon is cutting hundreds of employees to shift resources to fast-growing businesses. CNBC. February 13, 2018)

managing out

Financial Times

Mr Evans was likely to have been “managed out”, a process that companies sometimes turn to as an alternative to redundancy programmes and as a way of selecting those employees they would like to lose. In the UK and the US, where the process is sometimes known as “counselling out”, it involves persuading an employee that it would be in their interests to leave, often with a reasonable financial settlement thrown in.
(How employers ‘manage out’ unwanted staff. Financial Times. March 16, 2017.)

Head will roll

“Head will roll”

Heads continued to roll Monday at the New York City Housing Authority — but not THE head.

Shola Olatoye remained firmly ensconced as chairwoman even as Mayor de Blasio announced the second shake-up of the bungling agency, exactly one week after The Post revealed how NYCHA neglect led to a ceiling collapse that injured a tenant and his girlfriend in Brooklyn.

A mayoral spokeswoman said NYCHA General Manager Michael Kelly, Olatoye’s second-in-command, handed in his resignation, several weeks after informing City Hall he planned to abandon the $216,000-a-year post.
(Another head rolls at troubled city Housing Authority. New York Post. January 22, 2018.)

NYCHA(New York City Housing Agency; ニューヨークの住宅供給公社みたいなものでしょうか)で人事刷新(shake-upが行われたようです。

“Head will roll”

A Florida college fired a professor Tuesday for saying Hurricane Harvey was “karma” for Texas because it supported Donald Trump.

The University of Tampa sent sociology instructor Kenneth Story packing after his Twitter comment Sunday.

“We condemn the comments and the sentiment behind them, and understand the pain this irresponsible act has caused,” according to a university statement.
(David K Li. Professor fired over Harvey 'instant karma' tweet for Texas. New York Post. August 29, 2017.)

sent ~ packing

Merriam-Websterによると、

to force (someone or something) to leave a place or situation

A Bloomberg LP overture to New York Times No. 2 editor Dean Baquet may have helped trigger the events that resulted in his elevation to the top spot and the ouster of Executive Editor Jill Abramson.

Publisher Arthur "Pinch" Sulzberger acknowledged in a staff memo Thursday that there were long simmering "concerns about aspects of [Abramson’s] relationship with the newsroom" that prompted him to make the move.

Baquet apparently had bristled for a while under Abramson.

But things really seemed to pick up steam over the past week.

Baquet was informed May 8 that the change was afoot, according to the Times' report of events — a full six days before Abramson was given the heave-ho.
(Keith J. Kelly. The scoop on Jill Abramson’s firing from the NY Times. New York Post. May 15, 2014.)

give a person the heave-ho

お払い箱 ― get the boot

The man behind Apple Maps, the most maligned part of Apple's wildly successful iPhone 5, has gotten the boot.

Apple executive Richard Williams, who was the leader of the team responsible for the horribly flawed map app got kicked to the curb by Senior Vice President Eddy Cue, according to Bloomberg News.
(Michael Braustein. Man behind awful Apple Maps app ousted: report. New York Post. November 27, 2012.)

get the ax

A deputy head of Russia's flagship air carrier Aeroflot, Vladimir Smirnov, has been fired following flight chaos in the Russian capital's airports last weekend, an Aeroflot spokesman said Friday.

The spokesman said Aeroflot head Vitaly Savelyev held a meeting with Transportation Minister Igor Levitin on Friday and made the decision to give Smirnov the ax for "mistakes that led to operation disruptions."

Thousands of passengers were stranded at Moscow airports following an ice storm that hit Central Russia last weekend. Hundreds of flights were canceled and delayed as severe freezing rain caused serious power outages.
(Moscow airport flight chaos results in top Aeroflot official's dismissal. RIA Novosti. December 31, 2010.)

(4) ― dismiss

THE 187 Shabanie Mine workers who have been dismissed for participating in a strike last year have taken the asbestos company to the Labour Court in Gweru where they are challenging their dismissal.

One of the affected workers told Chronicle that the company had not followed the procedures when it dismissed them.

“A section of the Labour Act states that when a company decides to dismiss its workers it must first conduct a hearing and it must be that hearing which should rule that the worker or workers should be dismissed. The hearing is meant to afford employees a platform to defend themselves.
(Shabanie workers take company to court. Chronicle. September 15, 2010.)

(3) ― terminate

terminate employment

If you're looking for reasons to terminate Omar Minaya's employment you could parse each and every move the man has made during his tenure. Or you could look at the current product on the field or the Mets' immediate future and decide whether that justifies the man losing his job.
(Craig Calcaterra. HBT: Omar Minaya must either quit or be fired. MSNBC. August 31, 2010.)

(2) ― shelve

BEIJING—Anshan Iron & Steel Group Corp., also known as AnSteel, said Friday it hasn't given up on its planned project in the U.S. with Steel Development Co., and that an Anshan executive was mistaken on Thursday when he said the plan had been shelved.
(Anshan Holds to U.S. Plan. The Wall Street Journal. August 21, 2010.)

Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the Los Angeles Dodgers team physician, used platelet-rich plasma therapy in July on a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament in the throwing elbow of pitcher Takashi Saito. Surgery would have ended Mr. Saito's season and shelved him for about 10 to 14 months; he instead returned to pitch in the September pennant race without pain.
(Alan Schwarz. Promising Treatment for Athletes, in the Blood. New York Times. 2009.)

― dump

Nokia dumps CEO, turns to Microsoft exec

Nokia Corp. is replacing CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo with top Microsoft executive Stephen Elop as the world's top handset maker aims to regain lost ground in the fiercely competitive smartphone market.

Elop, head of Microsoft's business division, has held top posts at Juniper Networks Inc., Adobe Systems Inc., Macromedia Inc. He takes over Sept. 21, the company said Friday.
(Bloomberg Businessweek. September 10, 2010.)

The 50-peso coins - worth about 10 cents (6p) - were issued in 2008, but no-one noticed the mistake until late last year.

Instead of C-H-I-L-E, the coins had C-H-I-I-E stamped on them. The coins have since become collectors' items and the mint says it has no plans to take them out of circulation.

The BBC's Gideon Long, in the Chilean capital Santiago, says people have been hoarding the coins in the hope their value rises. But the mistake has cost the mint's general manager, Gregorio Iniguez, and several other employees, their jobs.

Qantas pilots forgot to lower wheels

QANTAS has stood down two pilots after a Boeing 767 landing in Sydney came within 700ft of the ground before the flight crew realised they had not lowered the plane's undercarriage.

The airline and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched investigations into the October 26 incident. The pilots are due to be interviewed by authorities on Friday.

記事では、その後、このようなアクシデントは非常にまれであり、カンタス航空は重大に受け止めている(...Qantas said yesterday that a crew failing to lower the undercarriage was extremely rare and it was taking the incident seriously...)、とあります。

"The incident was reported to the ATSB and the pilots were stood down. We are supporting the ATSB's investigation and our own investigations will determine what further action might be warranted."
