電気自動車メーカーのテスラは2025年第四四半期の業績を発表、主力商品であるモデルSおよびモデルX生産を段階的に縮小して最終的には生産終了すると公表しました。

両モデルを生産しているカリフォルニア州Fremontの工場は今後ロボットに注力するともしています。

このニュース記事のタイトルで、もはやテスラは自動車メーカーではない、としています。本文中も、テスラがEV（電気自動車）で鳴らした時代は過ぎ去った、ともあります。

CEOのイーロン・マスク氏自身、人間が運転する従来の自動車から自動運転（FSD: Full Self Driving）やロボタクシー、人間が行うタスクをロボットが代わりに行う自動化へ方向性の舵を切っています。

そして今日の表現ですが、

というくだり、"burn the ships"とは、退路を断つという意味の慣用句です。直後に、

The company is burning the boats, pinning its future on autonomous cars and robots

と出て来ますが、この"burn the boats"も同じく、

背水の陣を敷く、捨て身でかかる

という意味です。

船やボートを燃やすことが何故背水の陣を敷くことや退路を断つという意味になるのでしょうか？

敵陣を攻める際に川を越えて来たその船、ボートを燃やすということは、即ち自軍の退却する手段を無くすということであることから、このような意味になったということです。

penny-wise and billion-dollar-foolish

かねてよりトランプ政権は世界保健機関（WHO）から離脱する意向を表明していましたが、先日22日、正式に離脱を決定しました。

WHOが1948年に設立されて以来の加盟国であった大国アメリカの離脱がもたらす影響について触れた記事からの引用です。

記事中、関係者の1人は離脱を、

penny-wise and billion-dollar-foolish

と言っているというくだりがあります。

面白い表現だと思って調べてみると、この言い回しは、"penny-wise and/but pound-foolish"という慣用句の一種のバリエーションだと分かりました。

その意味は、

careful about small amounts of money but not about large amounts —used especially to describe something that is done to save a small amount of money now but that will cost a large amount of money in the future

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

というもので、些少なお金（penny）を気にする余り、大金（pound）を失う、また結果としてより大きなコストがかかる、ということを言っているものです。

日本語ですと、安物買いの銭失い、という表現に相当するとしている辞書もありますが、お金に限らず、小事に拘るあまり、大事が疎かになる、という意味合いでも用いられます。

アメリカはWHOからの離脱により、加盟国として支払う分担金を払わなくて済むことになります。この金額がいくらなのか知りませんが、それをケチっての離脱と引き換え失うものは大きい、ということを言わんとしているようです。

記事によれば、WHOが保有するインフルエンザや新型ウィルスの流行状況等に関するデータベースにアクセス出来なくなることによる自国の保健政策への影響などが挙げられています。

in lock step

昨日に引き続き、2人目の米国人が移民取り締まりで射殺された事件に関するニュースからの引用です。

事件を受けて、所轄官庁である米国土安全保障省のトップKristi Noem氏に対する風当たりが強くなっているとの報道です。民主党はNoem氏に対する弾劾を提案しているそうですが、身内の共和党からも辞職すべきだとの意見が上がっているということです。

そして、上司でもあるトランプ氏もNoem氏と距離を取りつつあるとの見方が・・・。

In the hours after the shooting, Noem was in constant touch with a number of White House officials, including Stephen Miller, and briefed them on the “defiant tone” she planned to take, sources told CNN. トランプ氏も最初はNoem氏を擁護する発言をしていましたが、射殺の瞬間を撮影したビデオがリリースされたことなどを受け、かばいきれなくなったのではないか、という見方です。

引用した記事では、

とありますが、事件発生直後にはNoem氏とホワイトハウスが同調していたことを指します。

ここで、"in lock step"とは、

in perfect or rigid often mindless conformity or unison

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味の慣用句だそうですが、初めて見るものです。

"lock step"（lockstepとも）とは、密集行進法というらしいですが、前後の間隔を詰めて進むことを指すもので、集団が一糸乱れぬ行進する様子を想起させます。

歩幅や左右前後を同期させる動きであり、それは意見や見解の一致、同調、という意味で用いられるようになったようです。

summary

米国の移民取締りでまた悲劇が起きました。

先日、ミネソタ州ミネアポリスでアメリカ人女性がICEの取締官に銃で撃たれて死亡するという事件があったばかりですが、今度は男性が撃たれ死亡。

いずれのケースも移民取締りへの抗議活動の最中の出来事で、ICEは正当防衛を主張しているという点も一致しています。

しかしながら、今回も果たして正当防衛なのかという点が疑問視されています。

Mobile phone footage demonstrates that Mr Pretti, like Ms Good, represented no threat. Contrary to scurrilous claims by senior members of the Trump administration, he was holding a phone, not a gun, before he was overpowered. 

His killing, which occurred after he attempted to assist a fellow protester who was being manhandled, amounted to a summary street execution by security forces. As anger erupted across Minneapolis, federal officers then reportedly prevented state investigators from accessing the scene of the shooting.

射殺された男性は銃を所持していたとも報道されていますが、一部始終を撮影したビデオ映像では射殺の際に男性が持っていたのは銃ではなく携帯電話だったということです。ICEの取締官らが男性の背中を銃で複数回撃ったとされ、過剰防衛との見方があります。

引用した記事で、

というくだりにある"summary"という表現を取り上げたいと思います。

カタカナでも「サマリー」とよく言いますが、要約、概要、まとめ、の意味であることはご存知の通りです。

しかし、ここでの"summary"は形容詞なんですね。法律、裁判のコンテクストで使われるようで、略式裁判などという時の「略式」に相当するようです。その意味は正式な手続きを省略した、また形式張らずに行う、というものです。

そして特に法律や裁判のコンテクストではないところでは、即座に、手っ取り早い、さっさと、という意味合いで使われます。

例えば、

は即時解雇を意味します。

記事に戻りますと、

a summary street execution

は街中で即座の処刑、とでもなるでしょうか。ICEはデモ参加者を手っ取り早く片付けるために射殺を選択したのでしょうか、そんな批判が滲んだくだりに思われます。

tenterhook

週末の為替相場のニュースで、日米が円安に対する「レートチェック」を実施、これを受けて対ドル円相場が一時急上昇した、ということを聞きました。

「レートチェック」なる用語を聞いたことが無かったので、いわゆる為替介入のことか、というくらいに思っていたのですが、厳密には為替介入に至る前段階とも言うべきアクションだそうです。

ロイターの記事を読んでみました。

世界情勢を受けて市場は刻々と変化するものですが、記事中、

markets remained on tenterhooks 

というくだりがあります。

この"tenterhook"という単語を知りませんでした。

辞書を引くと、"tenterhook"とは布張り鉤（釘）とあり、"on tenterhook"という表現は、

気がかりで、気がもめて、不安で

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味で用いられるとあります。

"tenterhook"という単語は"tenter"（布張り）と"hook"（鉤）とに分解できますが、"tenter"というのはテントと同じで、幕になる生地を伸ばし、成形、乾燥させる機械を指します。テントを意味する単語"tent"は広げる、伸ばすという意味のラテン語動詞tendereから来ています。

その布張り機械で布生地を張り伸ばすためのですが、"on tenterhook"というフレーズはピンと伸ばされた布生地の如く、緊張状態、あるいはストレスのかかった状況にあるということから、次に何が起こるのか、どうなってしまうのか、といった不安や気がもめる、やきもきする状態を意味するようになったというものです。

sell out

昨日に続き、ダボス会議を舞台にしたトランプ氏とニューソム・カリフォルニア州知事の応酬の話題です。

ニューソム知事はホワイトハウスの圧力によりスピーチの予定がキャンセルされたことを批判。その批判コメントの中で、唐突に（？）赤いニーパッド（膝当て）を取り上げて、世界のリーダーらにネット販売すると発言しました。

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday showed off knee pads that he suggested were for leaders “selling out” to the Trump administration.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Newsom said the red knee pads were available to buy via a website he had created.

“The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration,” Newsom said.

“These are available in bulk, too,” he said, holding up one of the knee pads, which showed U.S. President Donald Trump’s signature.

真っ赤なニーパッドにはトランプ大統領の署名が入っていますが、一体どのような意味があるのでしょうか？

記事を読んでもすぐには理解出来なかったのですが、両者の確執、応酬がエスカレートする中、これは何かのメッセージ、当て擦りに違いないと思われました。

ニューソム氏はこのニーパッドを、

for leaders “selling out” to the Trump administration

としています。ここで"sell out"とは、

卑屈になる、阿る、寝返る、（信条を曲げて）取り入る、裏切る

といった意味があり、要はグリーンランド領有を一方的に主張するトランプ氏に為すすべもなくすり寄る姿勢を見せるEU諸国の首脳らを指しているものと思われます。

また、

The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration

という発言のくだりでは、ニーパッドが売り切れた（sold out）と言い、それが米国の大学や巨大IT企業などがトランプ政権に阿った（selling out）結果であるとも述べ、"sell out"という表現の持つ2つの意味を使い分けて、シャレを利かせています。

実のところ、ニューソム氏が「ニーパッド」を持ち出すのは今回が初めてでは無いようです。

This isn’t the first time Newsom has brought out the kneepads. During a December talk between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk at the New York Times DealBook Summit, Newsom told the audience to check out the kneepads he was selling to the people “groveling to Trump’s needs.”

これを読んで、おおよそニーパッドが何を意図しているかが分かるというものです。

政権に阿り、跪く人たちに、膝を保護する「ニーパッド」を差し上げますよ — 何とも皮肉な話ではないでしょうか。

トランプ氏のはちゃめちゃな言動に為すすべなく翻弄され、取り込まれていく人達、跪く人達には膝当てを。

disinvite? uninvite? － disinvite

スイスで世界経済フォーラム（ダボス会議）が開催されています。

トランプ大統領が出席し、グリーンランド領有の決意を改めて語ったとの報道がトップですが、その傍らで、同じくダボス会議に出席しているニューソム・カリフォルニア州知事のスピーチの予定がキャンセルになったとのニュースを読みました。

フォーチュン誌との対談という形式のイベントが予定されていたようですが、ホワイトハウス側の圧力があったのではと言われています。

2028年の次期アメリカ大統領選への出馬へ意欲があるというニューソム氏は民主党であり、トランプ氏とは反りが合わず、お互いに批判の応酬に明け暮れてきた背景もありますので、恐らくそうなのでしょう。

さて、取り上げたいのは、

disinvite

という動詞です。

記事を読むと、元々スピーチをする予定であったということは明らかです。そのイベントには招待（invite）されており、それが取り消しになった、ということを"disinvite"と表現しています。

"disinvite"なんて動詞があったのかなと思いつつ辞書を引いてみると、研究社の新英和大辞典には載っていないのですが、ランダムハウス英和辞書には、

招待を取り消す

とあり、American Heritage Dictionary にも、

To rescind an invitation 

と提起されています。一度は招待したものの、後になってそれを撤回する、ということです。

ここで、そういえば"uninvite"という単語もあったのでは？と思いました。

接頭辞のdis-もun-も否定の意味合いを持ちますから、"disinvite"と"uninvite"の違いは何なのか？そういう疑問に至ったという訳です。

しかし辞書には"uninvite"という動詞のエントリはなく、"uninvited"という過去分詞形としての形容詞の意味合い（招かれない、差し出がましい）を載せているのみです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary オンラインの解説によると、"uninvite"という動詞も稀ながら存在するとしており、その意味はやはり招待を取り消すというもの、つまり"disinvite"に同じだそうです。

接頭辞のdis-はラテン語系であり、一方のun-は古英語（つまりゲルマン語系）からきているということですが、とくに取り消す、やめるといった意味合いの場合には、ラテン語系の動詞に付くのはdis-となると説明しています。"invite"はラテン語系の語ですから、"disinvite"がこのルールに則ったものということになります。

しかしながら、言語の世界は例外があるのが常であり、接頭辞のdis-、un-が（ラテン語由来の単語云々に関わらず）同じ単語に付き、異なる意味を形成するケースも多く見られると補足されています。（例えば、dislikeとunlike、など。）

"disinvite"と"uninvite"のケースは上述したように同じ意味合いなのですが、こうした類型に照らすとかなり特異なケースになるようです。

グリーンランド領有に意欲を燃やすトランプ氏。それを諌めようと結束するEU各国。

フランスのマクロン大統領やEUのフォン・デア・ライエン委員長らの説得にも関わらず、トランプ氏はグリーンランド領有は米国にとって死活的問題だとしてあらゆる手段の行使を否定していません。

さらには、反対する西側諸国に10%の追加関税を課すと述べ、これに対してはEU各国も報復関税を発動すると、大変な混乱になっています。

マクロン大統領はトランプ氏にプライベートメッセージを送り、トランプ氏が出席を予定しているダボス会議の後にG7首脳会議を行うことを提案しました。あろうことか、トランプ氏はこのプライベートメッセージの全文をSNSで公開。トランプ氏の常軌を逸した、予測不能な行動の典型とも言われています。

ガーディアン紙の記事から引用です。

オピニオン記事の一部分なので少しコンテクストが掴みにくいかも知れません。要旨としてはトランプ氏のはちゃめちゃな言動が世界を混乱させ、同盟国リーダーの大変な心痛になっている、というものです。

取り上げたいのは、

Iron is entering the soul of his one-time allies…

というくだりです。

文字通りには、鉄（iron）が魂（soul）の中に入る、となりますが、知らないと意味不明な表現ではないかと思います。私自身、この表現を知りませんでした。

この表現は聖書に因むもので、

（囚われの身で［虐待されて］）非常な苦悩を味わった

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味だとあります。

"iron"には拘束具の意味がありますが、それが魂に入るとは？表現としてやはり腑に落ちませんね。

実のところ、この英文表現は、聖書の原文であるヘブライ語をラテン語に翻訳した際の誤訳が元になっているという解説が添えられています。

旧約聖書詩篇（105:18）の該当箇所は、奴隷として売られたヨセフの首に「鉄の枷をはめる」（新共同訳）、というものです。ヘブライ語の知識はありませんので原文がどうなっているのかについては分かりませんが、"soul"とはヨセフを、"iron"とは枷を指すと考えられます。誤訳とされるラテン語訳（ウルガタ訳）は、

ferrum pertransiit animam ejus

となっています。ラテン語ferrumは英語で"iron"を意味する名詞の主格、ラテン語animamは英語で"soul"の相当する名詞の目的格であり、これが"The iron enters the soul."というフレーズの元になっているということになります。

聖書の英訳にもいくつかの版がありますが、

he was laid in iron

(King James Version)

としているもの、誤訳されたラテン語訳を逐語訳したと思われる、

the iron pierced his soul

(Douay Rheims Bible、他)

があり、後者がこの慣用表現の元となっているようです。

枷を嵌められて拘束されることは苦痛に違いなく、"The iron enters into the soul."が非常な苦悩を味わせるという意味になるのも分からなくは無いのですが、誤訳から生じたフレーズというのはユニークではないでしょうか。

専業主婦 ー SAHM

いわゆる「専業主婦」のことを英語では、

stay-at-home mom

略して、SAHM、というそうです。ご存知だったでしょうか？

Being a stay-at-home mom has its perks. No work, for one thing. And, once the kids are a little older, it tends to get easier and easier, meaning you might even get to sleep in from time to time as a SAHM. But the one thing some moms and wives should consider with this role is the retirement benefits. Or, rather, the lack thereof. One mom, Courtney, whose TikTok video was shared on Reddit says in her post that she didn’t plan for a divorce and now, financially, she is in a pretty tight spot.

時代遅れ、時代錯誤と言われそうですが、夫は外で働き、妻は家庭で家を守る、子育てに、食事に、掃除に・・・、という役割分担の中で、「専業主婦」はある種のステレオタイプとしても、言葉としても定着して来ました。

では、専業主夫は？英語にするとSAHD (stay-at-home dad)？

ネットで検索するとSAHDという言葉もあるようですが、夫とも妻とも特定しない、"stay-at-home parent"という表現が一般的になっているようです。

引用した記事は専業主婦が離婚してしまうと経済的な面で不利になってしまうという話です。

switch things up

真っ白なコートと手袋が印象的です。

ヴァージニア州で史上初の女性知事に就任したアビゲイル・スパンバーガー氏（46歳）の知事就任式での装いが話題になっています。伝統的には男性は燕尾服、女性はダークスーツを着用するものだということですが、その伝統をわざと外したのです。

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s governors traditionally wear morning suits for their inaugurations. But for her swearing-in on Saturday, Gov. Abigail Spanberger, the first woman to fill that role, dressed in white, the color of women’s suffrage.

“I’m not going to wear a morning coat, not to disappoint anyone,” she said.

新知事が真っ白な装いを選択したのは、女性の参政権を改めて強調する意図を込めた選択でした。（以前取り上げた、suffragette whiteをご覧ください。）敢えて伝統から逸脱するやり方を取ったという訳です。

記事のタイトルに、

Spanberger switched things up

とあります。

ここで、"switch things up"というフレーズは、やり方を変える、という意味ですが、特にこれまで普通に行われてきた慣習やルーチンに従わずに別のやり方を試してみる、というような意味合いがあります。

手元にある辞書を引いてみましたが、この表現を載せているものは見当たりません。口語表現として定着しているもののようですが、"switch"という動詞と副詞upの組み合わせ自体、辞書には載っていないのです。

"switch"には変更する、切り替える、という意味がありますが、副詞upは物理的、あるいは方向としての上方というような意味ではなく、ここでは単に強意のために添えられていると考えられます。

hack

ホワイトハウス報道官のレビット氏が、移民取り締まりに関する質問をしたメディアの記者を罵ったという記事からの引用です。

罵られたのはヒル紙の記者で、ICEの職員がミネソタ州でアメリカ人女性を銃で撃って死なせことなどを引き合いにトランプ政権の見解を質したようです。レビット報道官はこの記者を、

left-wing hack

と一蹴。記者席に座る資格も無いとまで言ったということです。

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to answer how Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Donald Trump’s administration is doing “everything correctly” after the killing of Renee Good and the deaths of 32 people in ICE custody in 2025, the agency’s deadliest year in two decades.

ということで今日取り上げる1語は、

hack

なのですが、罵り言葉として、売文家、という訳などが英和辞書に見えます。三文文士などとも言われますが、金儲けのために通俗的な内容のものを書いているという含みがある表現です。

この"hack"という単語は"hackney"という言葉から来ていると語源解説にあります。"hackney"とは荷馬の産地として有名なイギリスのHackney地方に由来し、貸し馬車のことを指します。雇われて人を運ぶサービスですが、そこから雇われ仕事、お金のために他人に仕えること、といったネガティブな意味を帯びるようになり、"hack"とは報酬のためにやる下賤な仕事というような意味になりました。

昨日に続き、アメリカがデンマーク領グリーンランドを領有を主張している話題です。

ベネズエラを電撃的に襲撃し大統領夫妻を拘束した興奮冷めやらぬ中、今度はグリーンランド接収案に言及し、軍事行動も辞さないとまで言い放ったトランプ大統領の発言に緊張状態が高まっています。

グリーンランド、デンマークの各首脳はアメリカの提案に改めて反対の姿勢を示したという報道です。

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Tuesday that the Arctic island chooses Denmark over the U.S., pushing back against Donald Trump’s repeated takeover threats.

ところで、両首脳はホワイトハウスでヴァンス副大統領、ルビオ国務長官と会談を予定しているといい、それが、

と表現されています。これは何と訳したものでしょうか？

"crunch"という単語はボリボリと音を立てて噛む、咀嚼するという動詞の意味がありますが、名詞としては噛み砕くことという意味の他、危機的状況、逼迫といった意味があります。研究社新英和大辞典では、

（一触即発の）緊張状態、土壇場、危機的状況、逼迫

といった意味合いを載せています。

アメリカによる接収、軍事行動が示唆されている状況はグリーンランド、デンマーク両国にとっては危機的な状況には違いありません。こうした"crunch"の意味は以前取り上げたことがあります。（2013年8月19日、2015年5月20日）

"crunch talks"は危機的状況下にある中での会談と解釈できるかと思います。改めて"crunch"の意味をチェックしてみると、次のような定義が見られ、

これらは、対立する関係にある当事者間における状況、という意味合いがポイントであると思われます。

「土壇場」とは斬罪の刑場、すなわち首を斬られる場所のことを指すそうです。（広辞苑第三版）

そこから、せっぱつまった場面、進退きわまった場面を意味するようになった（同）ということですが、グリーンランド、デンマーク両国にとってはホワイトハウスでの会談はそうした位置付けになるものと思われます。

と書いたところで、この"crunch talks"を簡潔に日本語で何と訳すかというのは悩ましいところです。

最近の子供達というのは生まれた時からスマホやタブレット端末を使うのが当たり前の世代で、デジタルネイティブなどと呼ばれます。しかしながら、幼い子供がデジタル端末を使い過ぎると言語能力に大きな問題が出るという研究報告がイギリスで公表されました。

いわゆる「スクリーンタイム」が1日5時間にのぼる子供は、1時間未満の場合と比較して、言葉を話す能力が著しく劣るという研究報告です。

今日の1語は、"schmear"という単語です。その意味なんですが、ベーグルなどに塗るクリームチーズのことだそうです。

記事のタイトルでは"schmear"が動詞として使われています。

内容はというと、ニューヨークで有名なベーグル店が創業家のゴタゴタで分裂したというものです。

冒頭で取り上げたクリームチーズの意味合いの"schmear"ですが、イディッシュ語を借用したもので、語源は"smear"と関連があるということです。

辞書には"schmear"の動詞の意味は載っていません。つまり、記事のタイトルは本来"smeared"とするところを、シャレを利かせて"schmeared"としたものと思われます。

toe the line

ミネソタ州で、移民取り締まりを行うICE職員が市民に発砲し、女性が死亡した事件は日本国内でも大きく報道されています。報道の中には今回の件が、2020年に警官に射殺されたアフリカ系アメリカ人のGeorge Floydさんの事件を彷彿とさせるという内容もみられます。

つまり、女性は何故射殺されなければならなかったのか、ICE職員は過剰防衛ではなかったのか、という論点です。

トランプ大統領は、射殺された女性について、移民取り締まりを妨害してきた極左集団のメンバーであり、今回の1件もテロの一種だとICE職員による発砲を正当化するコメントを出しました。

ヴァンス副大統領も当然と言いますか、トランプ氏に歩調を合わせたということなのですが、下記の引用にあるように、

というくだりをピックアップします。

ここで、"toe the line"というのは慣用表現なのですが、辞書を引くと、スタートラインにつま先を揃えるという意味合いから、命令や統制に従う、服する、という意味で使われるとあります。つまり、意見や言動などを（所属組織などに）期待された内容（line）に一致させる、揃える、ということで、同調する、歩調を合わせるといった意味合いになるでしょう。

しかしながら、ヴァンス氏は死亡した女性について、乗っていたSUVで ICE職員を轢き殺そうという意図があったかまでは分からないと発言。つまり、ICE職員による発砲の正当化に躊躇していると見なされたのです。

記事のタイトルにある、

は、トランプ政権の見解が「一枚岩」とまでは言えないようである、という趣旨と解釈できるでしょう。

米モータースポーツ団体NASCARのコミッショナーが失言で辞任、という見出しが目に留まりました。

NASCARにあまり関心や興味は無いのですが、一体どんな「失言」をしたのか、気になりましたので記事を読んでみることに・・・。

NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps has resigned from his position, the association announced Tuesday.

背景をざっと整理してみますと、NASCARはレース参戦枠などの運営を巡って一部のレース参加チームから独占禁止法違反を訴えられていたそうで、昨年末に和解が成立したそうです。

その裁判の過程において、コミッショナーがレース参加チームの代表を、

a stupid redneck

と罵るメールを書いていたことが明るみになったということです。

この"redneck"という単語を初めて見るように思います。辞書を引くと、

赤っ首（野郎）；米南部の無教育な白人労働者

とありました。

辞任したコミッショナーは運営方針を批判されてフラストレーションを募らせていたと釈明したようですが、組織のトップによる口汚い罵り言葉というものは致命傷になるものです。

"redneck"、赤っ首（野郎）は文字通り首の周りを赤くしているということですが、屋外の労働で首の周りを日焼けしていることを言ったものだとの語源解説が見られます。

アメリカの空港で忘れ物として届けられたテディベアの人形の持ち主を探すべく、空港職員がSNSに写真を投稿し話題になっているというものです。

今日の1語は、"plushie"という単語なんですが、日本語でいうところのぬいぐるみを指す単語です。

"plush toy"が"plushie"となったものです。

"plush"をランダムハウス英和辞書で引くと、「フラシ天」という訳語が出てきます。「フラシ」は"plush"をカタカナに置き換えたということなんですが、英単語の発音は「プラッシュ」です。何故、「プ」が「フ」になるのか分かりませんね。なお、研究社新英和大辞典では「プラシ天」としています。

短い毛足のビロード素材のことをフラシ天（プラシ天）というそうです。フラシ天というのは聞き慣れない言葉ですが、コール天は聞いたことがあります。

コール天は"corded velveteen"という英語から来ているそうですが、やはりビロード素材の一種です。

フラシ天、コール天の「〜天」は天鵞絨（てんがしゅう、ビロード。ポルトガル語veludeの漢字表記）から来ているとの説があるそうです。（手元にある広辞苑第三版の解説による。）

テディベアのぬいぐるみの持ち主は見つかっていないそうです。SNSでは空港の粋な計らいに対する肯定的なコメントが多く寄せられている一方、たかがぬいぐるみ、無くした免許証は探してくれなかったのに、といった否定的なものも寄せられているとか。

narco-terrorism

世界に衝撃が走ったアメリカによるベネズエラへの軍事侵攻と大統領夫妻の拘束。拘束された大統領夫妻はニューヨークでの裁判にかけられ、最新の報道によれば、ニューヨークの裁判所に到着し、罪状認否が行われ、マドゥロ氏は無罪を主張したと報じられています。

その罪状とは、

narco-terrorism

であるとのことです。

"narco-terrorism"という単語が、麻薬（narcotics）とテロリズム（terrorism）のかばん語になっているというのはスペルからも分かりやすいと思います。

しかし、具体的に、"narco-terrorism"とは何を指すのでしょうか？

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、ハイフン無しの"narcoterrorism"というエントリで、

Terrorism carried out to prevent interference with or to divert attention from illegal narcotics trafficking.

と定義しています。麻薬取り締まりを妨げる目的で行われるテロ行為という意味と解釈されます。

一方、Merriam-Webmaster Dictionaryでは、"narco-terrorism"（ハイフン有り）というエントリで、

terrorism financed by profits from illegal drug trafficking

と定義しています。こちらは、麻薬密売で得た収益を資金源として行われるテロ行為となりますが、意味合いがちょっと異なるように思われます。

トランプ政権によるマドゥロ大統領の拘束の背景には、ベネズエラ国内の麻薬組織を放置し、それがアメリカ国内へのコカイン密輸、流通になっているということがありました。してみると、今回の罪状である"narco-terrorism"は、違法薬物を蔓延させることによって他国を害しようとするテロ行為を指すようにも考えられ、上記のいずれの定義にも当てはまらないのではないかとも思われました。あるいは、マドゥロ政権自体、反米政権と見做されており、ベネズエラ国内の麻薬組織を野放しにしているという状況を米国に対する行為と断じたとの見方もされているようです。

"narco-terrorism"は日本語では麻薬テロと訳されるそうですが、その意味するところは今ひとつ曖昧にも思われます。

boots on the ground

米国がベネズエラを軍事攻撃、マドゥロ大統領を拘束したという衝撃的なニュースが世界を駆け巡りました。

違法薬物や不法移民などの諸悪を断罪するという大義ですが、強国が軍事介入によって他国の体制を変更することの是非が当然ながら問われています。

トランプ大統領は会見を開き、米国がベネズエラを今後「運営」すると明言しました。「運営」という言葉の意味するところが各メディアで取り上げられています。

「運営」に関連して、トランプ氏は、

の可能性も除外しないとコメントしました。

この"boots on the ground"という言葉が報道でフォーカスされているのですが、この表現はイディオムで、

Soldiers actively serving in a conflict zone

と定義されており、戦地に兵隊、軍を展開するという意味です。"boots"とは兵士のブーツ（軍靴）であり、軍隊のメタファーであると分かります。

トランプ氏はかつて、米国のイラク戦争参戦を大きなミステイクであると批判したことがありますが、今般ベネズエラに米軍展開となればイラクやアフガニスタンにおけるそれと同じ轍を踏むのではないかとの見方があります。

side eye

飛行機の乗客マナーについての記事から引用です。

狭い座席でストレッチをするというのはそれがエコノミークラス症候群のリスク軽減のためとはあっても、他の乗客の迷惑になりかねません。

記事の乗客は窓側の席で両脚を壁に跳ね上げてストレッチする様子をSNSで公開したもののようですが、これが批判を呼びました。

記事で、

give someone the side eye

という慣用表現が使われていますが、

a sidelong glance or gaze (as of scorn, suspicion, disapproval, or veiled curiosity)

という意味です。

横目で、流し目で見るというのは顔を直接向けず、目だけを横に向けるということですが、直接に見ないのは見たくないからで、対象に不快感を覚えたり、批判的である場合です。

この"give someone the side eye"という表現を手元の英和辞典で引いてみたのですが、"side-glance"という表現は載っていたのですが、"side eye"は見当たりませんでした。

また、"side eye(s)"なのか、"the side eye"なのかは違うと思われますが、表現としてはどちらもあるようです。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは（ハイフンで繋げ、さらに定冠詞theを冠した）"the side-eye"と表現することがしばしばある、と載せています。

さて、ニュース記事を斜め読みしておりますと、ヘッドラインには"NYE" (New Year’s Eve) の文字が目立ち、各国での年越しの様子を伝える記事を多く目にします。

オーストラリアの奥地に、年越しを3回（！？）迎える場所があるという記事に目を引かれました。

An outback community located at the junctions of the Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales borders will do just that tonight, each time the clock strikes midnight in the three states.

Cameron Corner local Kate Osman has been part of the triple New Year's Eve shindig since 2000.

シドニーから1647キロ、ブリスベンから1342キロ、アデレードからは1051キロという内奥にあるCameron Cornerという町はクイーンズランド州、サウスオーストラリア州、ニューサウスウェールズ州の3州の州界に位置するそうですが、3州が異なる等時帯にあるため、それぞれ日付の変わるタイミングが異なるということなのです。地図帳を引っ張り出して確認してみますと、広大な国土を誇るオーストラリアの等時帯は少しややこしいのですが、現在オーストラリアは夏時間で、3州の間に30分ずつの時差があります。町中には3州の州界を示すプレートがあり、この場所では年越しを3度祝おうという人々で毎年賑わうとのことです。

さて、今日の1語、"outback"は内陸の土地、奥地を指す単語ですが、特にオーストラリアの内陸地を意味するとの説明が辞書に載っています。

はて、"outback"はオーストラリア英語なのかな、と思ったのですが、そうではなく裏庭、バックヤードを意味するアメリカ英語をオーストラリア人が借用したものだそうです。その後、裏庭、バックヤードの意味は廃れ、もっぱらオーストラリアにおける奥地を指す意味合いに特化したということです。（Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによる。）

なお、Outback Steakhouseという有名なレストランチェーンがありますが、そちらもオーストラリア由来でも何でもなく、アメリカ・フロリダ州発のブランドです。
