朝刊の1面で金（ゴールド）の価格が高騰しているという記事を読みました。1グラム当たりの金の店頭販売価格は2万円台を超え、コロナ前の2020年から2倍以上となっています。

あの時買っておけば今頃は・・・、などと考えるのは貧乏人の性です（笑）

さて、アメリカでもやはり金の相場が高騰しているというニュースを見かけました。

The value of America’s gold hoard has topped $1 trillion for the first time as bullion smashes through record highs.

Prices surged above $3,824.50 an ounce on Monday, extending a 45% rally this year that has been fueled by safe-haven buying at a time of trade wars, geopolitical turmoil and fears of a government funding crisis.

金（ゴールド）は言うまでもなく"gold"ですが、記事では"bullion"という単語も使われています。

"bullion"とは、貨幣等に鋳造する前のゴールドのことで、いわゆる地金、金塊、金の延べ棒を指す表現です。

語源欄を見ますと、丸太を意味するbilletと関連しているようですが、ラテン語で沸騰することを意味するbullireという語の影響を受けてのスペルであるという説明に興味を覚えました。フランス語のbouillon（ブイヨン）、また英語boil（沸騰）と語源を同じくするということなのです。

アングロフランス語bullionは貨幣鋳造所を指すそうですが、金を溶かして延べ棒にするプロセスと関連するのでしょうか？

have the run of the place

人工知能（AI）が人の仕事を奪う・・・、そんな話題はこれまでもいくつか取り上げてきましたが、今日引用する記事も同じ類の話です。

UC Berkeleyといえば米国の名門大学ですが、コンピューターサイエンスを専攻する学生が就職に難儀しているとのことです。

プログラミングなどの仕事がAIに取って代わられている現状が影響しているとの見方です。

同大教授のコメントに以下のくだりがあります。

"Our students typically had five internship offers throughout their first four years of college," Farid said. "They would graduate with exceedingly high salaries, multiple offers. They had the run of the place. That is not happening today. They're happy to get one job offer."

かつては、引く手数多、就職に困ることなど無く、高給が約束されていたコンピューターサイエンス専攻の学生でしたが、AIが勃興する現在はオファーすら得られないとのことです。

They had the run of the place.

というくだりがあります。ここで、"have the run of〜"という表現が使われていますが、慣用的な表現で、

the freedom to go anywhere or do anything one wants in (a place)

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味合いがあります。研究社新英和大辞典では、"run"という名詞に、

出入（使用）の自由

という意味があると載せています。

"run"という単語にこのような意味があるとは知りませんでしたね。

先日も取り上げた、"run"という単語の意外な用法についての投稿も参考下さい。

troll

第2次トランプ政権下、トランプ氏はホワイトハウスのリノベーションを進めているそうで、大統領執務室に金ピカの装飾を施したり、アメリカ国旗掲揚のポールの新規追加、宴会場の建設などが計画されています。

その一環で、歴代大統領の肖像を掲げる回廊、"Presidential Walk of Fame"がこのほど公開されたそうですが、バイデン前大統領の写真は肖像ではなく、オートペン（autopen）の写真が掲示されているそうです。

オートペン（autopen）とは手書き署名の代わりに機械が本物そっくりの署名をしてくれるというもので、バイデン氏が自署せず、オートペンが多用されているということが取り沙汰され、大統領の署名が量産されていると揶揄されたものです。

高尚であるはずの肖像を機械の写真にすげ替えるとは相当の皮肉を込めた仕打ちです。

引用した記事のタイトルでは、

Trump "Walk of Fame" trolls Biden with autopen signature in place of portrait

とありますが、ここで使われている"troll"という単語を改めて取り上げたいと思います。

「改めて」というのは以前取り上げたからですが、14年前の投稿で取り上げた時の"troll"の意味合いは、主にインターネット空間における「荒らし」の行為を指すというものでした。

この"troll"の意味合いは、疑似餌で流し釣りをするという元の意味から生まれたものと言われており、ネット掲示板などにおいて、敢えて刺激的な内容の投稿をすることで他人を挑発、議論に食い付かせるという行為を"troll"というようになったものです。

しかし、上記の記事タイトルの用法は、ネット上の「荒らし」行為というのとは違っているように思われましたので、改めて取り上げたという次第です。

そもそも、ネット上の「荒らし」行為という意味自体、古い辞書の"troll"のエントリには載っていないのですが、14年前は新語的な扱いがされていたと記憶します。

時代は流れ、ネット掲示板の全盛時代も過ぎ去り、今やSNS全盛の時代で"troll"という表現もあまり聞かなくなったようにも思います。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）では、"troll"の意味として、

to harass, criticize, or antagonize (someone) especially by provocatively disparaging or mocking public statements, postings, or acts

という定義を載せていますが、これはネット空間での挑発という行為を指す"troll"の意味をより一般化したものではないかと思われます。

言葉の意味というものは時代の変遷とともに変化していくものですが、"troll"に関してはネット空間、特にネット掲示板で煽るような投稿をする行為を意味していたところが、ネットに限らず他人を中傷する行為を指す意味に一般化されたように思われます。

unburn the bridges

バイデン前政権で副大統領を務めたカマラ・ハリス氏の回顧録"107 Days"がこのほど出版され話題になっています。

昨年の大統領選では途中で撤退したバイデン氏の後を受けて出馬、トランプ氏に敗北しました。回顧録では認知機能の低下が疑われていたバイデン氏の大統領選出馬にもとより懐疑的であったことや、自身の大統領選における副大統領候補者選びを巡る民主党内のゴタゴタなど、内幕が赤裸々に綴られているそうです。まぁ、いわゆる暴露本といった類かと思います。

この回顧録は出版前からリークされた内容が取り沙汰されていましたが、暴露的な内容に対しては民主党内から批判も上がっているようで、ハリス氏も釈明に追われている模様です。

上記の引用で、

the former vice president insisted she isn’t burning bridges in her own party

とある部分の"burn the bridges"というのが今日取り上げる表現です。

コンテクストからは、人間関係を悪くする、険悪にする、といった意味合いであろうことは想像がつきます。

果たしてそういうイディオム（慣用句）があるのかと辞書を引きますが、手元にある辞書には載っていないようです。

ところで、同じポリティコ紙の別記事でもこの"burn the bridges"という表現が用いられており、興味深いことにはその記事のタイトルでは、

unburn the bridges

という表現が出てきます。

自身の回顧録のせいで人間関係が険悪なことになっていることについて問われ、ハリス氏はそのような意図は無かったと釈明し、関係修復に努めている、ということのようです。

"burn the bridges"が、人との関係（bridges）を毀つ（burn）というのは分かりますが、それを修復することを"unburn the bridges"というのは解せません。燃やしてしまったもの（burnt）は元に戻せないというのが普通でしょう。

英語辞書には"unburnt"という、動詞の過去分詞形、あるいは形容詞としてのエントリはあっても、"unburn"という動詞を載せているものはありません。"unburn the bridges"は随分と変わった表現だと言えます。

翻って、"burn the bridges"という表現も辞書には見当たらないのですが、ネットで検索すると、他人との関係に破綻をきたし、絶縁状態をもたらすことを"burn a bridge"と表現するらしいことが分かりました。

Everybody has heard the expression “Never burn a bridge.” What does it mean to burn a bridge? It means that you end a relationship in such a way that you could never go back and re-start the relationship again — or perhaps you could, but it would require you to beg forgiveness of the person whose bridge you have burned, even to try.

"unburn the bridges"は"burn the bridges"から派生（逆成）した表現だとの解説も見かけましたが、非常に奇異な表現だと思います。

paper tiger

ウクライナ問題を巡るトランプ大統領の発言がまたシフトしました。ロシアの侵略を受けているウクライナについて、既に占領下にある領土は諦めなければならないとのスタンスだったのが、全ての領土を取り戻す可能性について言及したと報じられています。

ロシアに対する融和的姿勢は消え、ロシアを張子の虎（paper tiger）とまで呼び、NATOによる攻撃も容認する姿勢を示したとあります。

US President Donald Trump has said Kyiv can "win all of Ukraine back in its original form", marking a major shift in his position on the war with Russia.

Trump said his position had changed "after getting to know and fully understand the Ukraine/Russia military and economic situation".

張子の虎（paper tiger）という表現をお聞きになったことがあるでしょうか？

American Heritage Dictionary では、

One that is seemingly dangerous and powerful but is in fact timid and weak.

と定義されています。外見、見かけは威勢が良いけれども実質は何のことはない、見かけ倒し、空威張り、という意味です。

この表現は中国語から来ていると同辞書の語源欄にあります。

Translation of Chinese (Mandarin) zhǐlǎohǔ : zhǐ, paper + lǎohǔ, tiger.

漢字にすると、

紙老虎

となります。

中国の毛沢東主席がアメリカの帝国主義を指して使ったのがよく知られているところです。

勇猛さの象徴である虎も、紙の虎（paper tiger）は風に吹かれれば飛び、雨に濡れればふやけるように、人民のパワーの前には見かけ倒しだと言ったとされます。（毛沢東語録）

小生がこの表現を知ったのはゴダールの映画「気狂いピエロ」だったか。

中国がアメリカを批判して使った表現を、それから半世紀経った現代において、アメリカがロシアを批判するのに用いるというのは、皮肉というべきか、何というべきか・・・。

put to bed

暗殺された保守系政治活動家、Charlie Kirk氏の葬儀がアリゾナ州で営まれ、トランプ大統領らが出席しました。

出席者にはイーロン・マスク氏も含まれ、会場ではマスク氏とトランプ氏が再会、握手を交わしたと報じられています。

When Elon Musk and President Donald Trump’s feud reached a fever pitch, Charlie Kirk desperately wanted the two to put their fight to bed and make up.

Asked about the meeting on Air Force One, Trump said they didn’t organize the handshake and chat because of Kirk’s desires that they mend fences, but the president nonetheless welcomed it.

第二次トランプ政権発足直後から蜜月といわれたトランプ氏とマスク氏の関係は破綻、マスク氏は第三極となる政党を立ち上げるとも発言していましたが、亡くなったKirk氏は両者が仲直りすることを望んでいたそうです。その遺訓を受けての両者再会、握手という訳です。

引用記事で目に留まったのは、

put their fight to bed

という表現です。

"fight"を"put to bed"ということなのですが、ベッド（寝台）に置く、というのはちょっと奇異に感じられました。意味合いとしてはケンカを終わらせるというようなことだろうと想像はつくのですが。

何かを終わらせるという時に、それをベッドの上に置く、というのは何か比喩的な含みでもあるのだろうかと思った次第です。

実のところ、"put something to bed"というフレーズの意味はいくつかのバリエーションがあるようです。

オンライン辞書での定義と用例をいくつか拾ってみました。

to achieve a plan or task or complete it successfully

Before putting the agreement to bed, we still had to satisfy them.

to successfully deal with something or solve a problem:

We thought we'd put the issue to bed, but it was brought up again at the next meeting.

これらを見ると、"put fight to bed"も自ずとしっくりくるように思えますが、なぜ「ベッド」なのかはよく分かりません。

ところで、このフレーズにはもうひとつ、印刷業界の用語として、以下のような定義もあるそうです。

to finalize work on (a newspaper, magazine, etc) so that it is ready to go to press

(Collins Dictionary Online)

印刷、出版の原稿を最終化するというような意味ですが、この意味における"bed"は人が寝るベッドではなく、印刷機械の版下を置くフラットベッドのことです。

翻って、最初に挙げたCollins Dictionaryの定義（achieve, complete）とその例文に見られる、物事の最終化、達成、完了という意味合いは、この印刷用語から来ているのではないかと思います。

一方、2番目に挙げたCambridge Dictionaryの定義（deal with something or solve a problem）と例文ですが、こちらは目的語としては課題や問題、懸念など、望ましくないものを取ると考えると、他の意味、用例とは一線を画するもののように思います。今回取り上げた記事での、"put fight to bed"はここに当てはまるのでは、と。

しかし、なぜ「ベッド」なんでしょうか？

"put something to bed"という表現を検索していると、

put child to bed

という検索結果が出て来たりするのですが、これは文字通り子を寝かしつけるという意味です。中々寝ない（寝れない）子を寝かしつけるのは面倒な事でもあります。故に、目的語がネガティブな対象となるのは得心がいきます。

また、子を寝かしつけるのは親の仕事ということでは、主語はそうしたことの出来る権利やパワー、オーソリティを持った者、という含みがあるというディスカッションを見かけました。

つまり、"put something to bed"の主語は自ら対象に対する責任、つまりケリをつける立場にあるという含みです。

不和を解決できるのは周りではなくケンカの当事者ら本人に他ならない、というところでしょう。

hangnail

「さかむけ」のことを英語で"hangnail"と言います。

私のお気に入りの英語辞書では以下のように定義されています。

hangnail

A small piece of dead skin at the side or the base of a fingernail that is partly detached from the rest of the skin.

(American Heritage Dictionary)

a bit of skin hanging loose at the side or root of a fingernail

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

この"hangnail"という単語ですが、古英語agnail、あるいはangnailという語が変化したものだそうです。

そのスペルにnailという単語を見て取れますが、ag- 、ang-というのは、痛い（painful）という意味だそうです。さかむけをむくと痛いですから、これはある意味納得です。

ところでMerriam-Webster Dictionaryの解説によると、古英語agnail (angnail) のnailは爪のことではなく、釘のことで、しかも「魚の目」を指したものなんだそうです。魚の目が釘の頭（つまり金槌で叩く部分）と似ているからだそうで、そう言われてみればサイズ的にも近いと思わされます。

「魚の目」と「さかむけ」は別物ですが、どちらも痛いものということでは共通でしょうか。さかむけの意味合いはnail (fingernail) と結び付いて後からできたもののようです。

ag-、ang-という部分も"hang"というスペルに変化し、痛いという意味合いとは関係のないものですが、辞書の語源解説では民間語源とされています。

let down

トランプ大統領のイギリス訪問は2日間の日程を消化した模様です。

スターマー首相との共同記者会見ではウクライナ問題に触れ、ロシアのプーチン大統領への批判を口にしたと報じられています。

Donald Trump has accused Vladimir Putin of letting him down in a joint press conference with Keir Starmer during which the US president piled criticism on his Russian counterpart.

Trump said on Thursday that he had hoped to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine soon after entering office, but that Putin’s actions had prevented him from doing so.

その発言ですが、記事中にありますように、

Putin “has let me down”

というものです。

"let down"とは、人を目的語に取って、（人を）失望させる、相手の体面などを傷つける、という意味の表現です。

大統領就任前には、24時間以内に戦争を終わらせる、と豪語していたトランプ氏ですが、プーチン氏からはいいようにあしらわれてしまった感もあり、トランプ氏自身、面目が立たないフラストレーションがあると思われます。

この"let (someone) down"という言い回しは、名詞化して"letdown"という表現もあります。

headline

銃撃され死亡したアメリカの保守系政治活動家、Charlie Kirk氏の葬儀にトランプ大統領、ヴァンス副大統領らが出席すると報じられています。

President Doanld Trump and several members of his Cabinet will speak at a memorial in Arizona this weekend to honor Charlie Kirk, the conservative political organizer killed in a shooting on Sept. 10.

Trump will headline the event on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona — which is home of the Arizona Cardinals football team — alongside Vice President JD Vance, a longtime friend of Kirk’s who hosted his podcast on Monday to honor his legacy, and Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk.

弱冠31歳でこの世を去ったKirk氏は、MAGAを地で行く若手政治活動家としてトランプ氏からも寵愛されていたようです。

記事のタイトル、本文で、"headline"という動詞が使われています。

ニュース記事の「ヘッドライン」は見出しのことですが、"headline"という動詞に、

（ショーの）主役を務める

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味があるのは知りませんでした。Kirk氏の葬儀は「ショー」ではありませんが、政権の閣僚らが参列し、米国内は元より世界各国も注目するであろう大きなイベントです。ここでは、トランプ氏、ヴァンス氏が筆頭の出席者になる、というくらいの意味合いと思われます。

ところで、American Heritage Dictionaryで"headline"のエントリを見てみると、動詞の意味として以下のようにあります。

1. To supply (a page or passage) with a headline.

2.

a. To present or promote as a headliner: The Palace Theater headlines a magician.

b. To serve as the headliner of: He headlines the bill.

1番目の定義はニュース記事等のの見出しを付けるという意味で、2番目の定義が今日取り上げる"headline"の意味に相当します。

興味深いのはこの"headline"という動詞が、

（人が）（イベントの）主役を務める

という構文で使われると共に、

（イベントが）（人を）主役に据える

という構文でも使われるという点です。つまり、主客が入れ替わることができるということなのですが、通常英語の構文において、主語と目的語が入れ替わる場合には動詞（他動詞）は受動態になるのが普通ですから、この"headline"という動詞の用法は特殊なもののように思われます。

こうした特徴を持つ動詞として他にどんなものがあるのか、あるいはこうした動詞を何と称するのか、どこかで見たような、聞いたような気がするのですが思い出せないでいます。色々調べてみたのですがよく分からず、ご存知の方にはお教えいただければと思います。

記事の引用からどうぞ。

ファーストフードチェーンの店員の装いに関心など個人的にはありませんが、記事によりますとマクドナルドではユニフォームに多少のバリエーションが認められていて、地域により特色があるそうです。ヨーロッパのマクドナルドではジーンズ着用の店員がいて、後ろポケットにはマクドナルドのロゴがワンポイントで入っているもがオシャレだとSNSで話題になっているます。

引用部分で、

とあります。動詞の"serving"と併せて、サイドメニュー、つまりメインディッシュに添える副菜に掛けたシャレのようになっています。

私はいわゆる「サイドメニュー」というのは和製英語かと思っていたのですが、"side"には、

（主料理とは）別途の

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という形容詞の用法があり、"side order"、"side dish"などといった言い回しは英語表現として通じるものです。この"side"が名詞化して、

a side of fries

のように「サイドメニュー」を表す表現となっています。

こうした"side"の意味合いは、

などの表現にも見られます。

schmooze

トランプ大統領が今週イギリスを訪問する予定です。

トランプ氏の就任まもなく、イギリスのスターマー首相はチャールズ国王からの招待状を携えてホワイトハウスを訪問、今回の訪英の実現へとつながっています。

メラニア夫人も帯同してチャールズ国王夫妻との晩餐会も予定される国賓待遇の背景には政治的な事情も絡んでいるとされます。

ウクライナ問題や関税協議など、米英間には小さくない課題がある中、トランプ氏の訪問を大々的なものとするのは同氏に阿るところがあるというのがメディアの見方となっています。

トランプ氏はロイヤルファミリーが大好きらしく、チャールズ国王による直々の招待、盛大なもてなしはトランプ氏の鼻をくすぐるところが大いにあり、両国間の交渉事を今後優位に進めるのに役立つというのです。

引用した部分の後半に、

this week's royal schmooze-fest will make a positive impression on Trump

というくだりがありますが、"schmooze"という見慣れない単語が使われています。

"schmooze"というのはイディッシュ語から来ている単語で、たわいの無いおしゃべりといった意味合いだそうですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionary では以下のように定義されており、

to converse informally : CHAT

also : to chat in a friendly and persuasive manner especially so as to gain favor, business, or connections

単なるおしゃべりと言ってもその内容が相手の気を引こうとしたり、好感を得ようという下心あってのものであることを含意しているという解説です。

countervail

SNSを見ていると思わず目を奪われる画像や動画が表示されることがよくあります。

そういう投稿はやはり沢山の人の耳目を集めると見えて、再生回数や表示数が何万回とか、何十万回とあります。

こういった画像や動画が現実を記録したものではなく、人口知能（AI）により生成されたものだと添えられていることもあり、なるほど、と思うのですが、正直なところ、本物と見分けがつきません。

今日読んだニュース記事によりますと、AIは写真家にとっての脅威となっているということです。

プロの写真家にお願いしなくても、立派な、見栄えの良いプロフィール写真なんかはAIで作れてしまうからです。

写真家は生き残ることができるのか？そんな論調になるところ、以下のくだりがあります。

詰まるところ、写真の価値は本物かそうでないか、というところに落ち着くということでしょう。

こので使われている"countervail"という表現を知りませんでした。

対抗する、相殺する、匹敵する、という意味ですが、同義語としては"counteract"があります。

語源は接頭辞counter-（contra）に、価値があるという意味のラテン語動詞valere。つまり、価値（value）において対抗できる、という意味です。

写真の何に価値を置くのかは人様々でしょう。AIにより生成された写真がニーズを満たすという人もいるでしょうし、「ホンモノ」にこそ価値を見い出すという人もいます。

"countervail"の-vailという部分は上述しましたようにラテン語valere（価値がある）から来ていますが、同語源の単語に、"prevail"、"valedictorian"などがあります。

"travail"という単語はスペルは似ていますがまた別語源です。

compromising position

医師が手術中に患者を放置して看護婦といちゃついていたというニュース記事を読みました。

A CONSULTANT left a patient in the middle of an operation to have sex with a nurse, a medical tribunal heard yesterday. 

Dad-of-three anaesthetist Suhail Anjum, 44, popped into an adjoining theatre for the romp because he knew “Nurse C” was nearby.

そんなことがあっても良いものなのか！？という尤もな怒りはさて置くとして、事態が発覚したのは医師と看護婦が、

in a compromising position

にあるのを同僚が目撃したからだとあります。

この"in a compromising position"には特別な意味合いがあって、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryではイディオムとして、

in a compromising position 

idiomatic phrase

: having sexual relations —used euphemistically

という定義を載せています。また、Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismsには、"compromise"という動詞に、

to involve in extramarital copulation

という意味があると載っています。いずれも口に出すのが憚られる内容をぼかして言う時の表現、つまり婉曲表現ということになります。

ご存知のように、"compromise"という動詞は妥協するという意味がまず思い浮かぶと思います。また、危うくする、危険にさらすという意味もあり（以前の投稿「"compromise"という単語について考える」もご覧ください）、今回のように職を失いかねないような行為はまさに"compromising"であるとも言えますが、"in a compromising position"というフレーズの持つ性的な意味合いは英和辞書には載っていないようです。

"position"というのがまた微妙な表現だと思いますが、この記事のドクターとナースのように、目撃されたところが非常に如何わしい状況、眉を顰めるような場面であったというニュアンスでしょうか。

アップルが新型iPhoneを発表しました。毎年この時期に新製品を発表し、メディアの注目を集めていますが、今年はiPhone 17、史上最も薄いと話題のiPhone Airを含む4製品を発表したとあります。

"Awe dropping"（驚嘆必至の、というくらいの意味でしょうか。"jaw-dropping"を連想させる表現です。）と銘打った新製品発表イベントに関するニュースのヘッドラインをざっと追ってみました。

目に留まった記事を以下に引用するのですが、タイトルに注目です。

上述しましたように、"awe dropping"はイベントのキャッチフレーズなんですが、タイトルでこのイベントが"fall close to the tree"とあるのは一体どういう意味なのか、よく分からないでいました。

よくよく調べてみると、"fall close to the tree"というのは、

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

ということわざに関連しているらしいことが分かりました。"The apple never falls far from the tree."とも言うそうですが、その意味は、

a child usually has a similar character or similar qualities to his or her parents

というもので、子供というのは親の性質を受け継ぐもの、親に似るもの、というものです。

説明不要かと思いますが、リンゴの木が親で実が子、ということですね。

記事のタイトルはアップルの社名に引っ掛けてこのことわざを持ち出したもので、シャレが効いています。

記事の本文は淡々と新製品の特長を説明しているものなので、このタイトルに何か特別な意味合いやニュアンスが込められたものなのかはよく分かりませんでしたが、新製品としては親となるこれまでの製品の系譜を受け継ぐもの、というくらいの意味かと思われます。もしくはアップルらしい「安定の」新製品披露イベント、「やはりアップル」、ということだろうと解釈しました。

skeeter

今日の1語、"skeeter"というのは"mosquito"（蚊）のことです。

"mosquito"という単語の頭音消失形であると辞書にあります。

Dutch scientists have discovered that mosquitoes prefer the blood of people who’ve knocked back a few brews, among other habits.

The team, helmed by Felix Hol of Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands, set out to see “why some people attract more mosquito bites than others,” per a paper uploaded to BioRXiv.

記事によると、蚊の習性としてビールの臭い（？）に引き付けられるという研究成果があるそうです。

ビールそのものの臭いというよりも、ビールを沢山飲む人の発する体臭が蚊を寄せ付けるのだそうです。

退役軍人への支援などに功績のあった俳優のトム・ハンクスさんを称える名誉賞を授与するとしていた米陸軍の士官学校が、授賞式をキャンセルすると発表し波紋を拡げています

名誉賞自体は授与されるそうですが、セレモニーが中止になったのは、ハンクスさんが民主党寄りであることが影響したと報じられています。

ハンクスさんは2020年の大統領選ではバイデン氏支持に名を連ねたとあります。

そして、2016年、この年の大統領選はトランプ氏が勝利しましたが、選挙戦の最中、トランプ氏を、

self-involved gas bag

と呼んだそうです。

この"gas bag"という単語の意味するところを知りませんでしたが、気嚢（きのう）という日本語が英和辞書に見えます。気球や飛行船という意味もあるこの単語は、ガスで膨らませた袋のことで、「おしゃべり」の意味でも用いられると分かりました。"gasbag"と1語で綴られることもあります。

"self-involved"という形容詞が意味を強めていますが、訳すならば、独りよがりの駄弁に終始する奴、くらいになるでしょうか。

結構強烈な表現ですね。

トランプ氏が聞いたら顔を紅潮させて手が付けられなくなりそうです。

put up or shut up

昨日、石破首相が遂に辞任を表明しました。就任から1年持ちませんでしたね。

Japan’s prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, is to resign less than a year after taking office, throwing the country’s politics into turmoil and setting in motion a potentially messy contest to replace him as leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic party (LDP).

衆院選、都議選、参院選と三連敗を喫しながらも続投を表明している首相に対する辞任圧力が日々に増していましたが、遂に、という感じです。

自民党内では総裁選を前倒しで行う方向性が検討されていましたが、首相はそうなれば衆院解散に打って出るという意向を示したと報じられていました。解散総選挙になれば困ったことになる自民党議員も少なくない中、首相の言は総裁選前倒しを思い留まらせる脅しとも。

記事のくだりに、

threatening instead to call a “put up or shut up” snap election

とありますが、そうした状況を表現したものと思われました。

ここで、

put up or shut up

という慣用表現が使われているのですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionary では、

used to tell someone in a somewhat rude way to start doing something or to stop talking about it

と解説されています。

文字通りには、やってみろ、さもなければ黙れ、という命令文のようになります。

石破首相にしてみれば、総裁選前倒しができるものならやってみろ、（やったら）解散する、ということでしょうか。

この表現はケンカをけし掛ける時に使われるそうで、"put up"はあげるという意味ですが、何をあげるかといえば、拳をあげるということのようです。

やれるものならやってみな、というような和訳がしっくりきますが、"put up or shut up"には中々煮え切らない態度の相手に決断を迫る際の決めゼリフでもあるようです。

コーパスで検索すると以下のような用例が目に付きます。

中々決断、実行しようとしない人に対して、やるのか、やらないのか、そうでなければ退け（するな、やめろ）、と言うのは、決断を先延ばしにすることを非難し、旗幟を鮮明にせよと迫ることでもあります。

その意味では参院選大敗後の自民党というのは石破首相にしろ、首相に辞任を求めた反石破派にしろ、何となく煮え切らないものが漂っていたように小生は感じました。

最終的に、石破首相は辞任を表明することになった（辞めさせられた）ということでは、自民党の反石破派の"put up"が通った、というところでしょうか。

これを読んでいるアナタ、もしかしてトイレの便座に座りながら読んでいませんか！？

トイレに座ってスマホを触るのは痔になるからやめた方が、と言っても余計なお世話！？ですね。

しかし、イギリスで行われた医学的な研究ではトイレでのスマホ利用と痔疾の関連が示されたということですから、耳を傾けた方が良いかも知れません。

トイレでのスマホ利用と痔の関連についての記事は以前も取り上げたことがあります。便座に座っている時間が長いと肛門周りの血管が圧迫されることが原因です。

さて、上記に引用した記事に、

Those who sit on the throne with a phone

というくだりがありますが、"throne"は便座を指しています。「玉座」を意味する単語ですが、こんな意味もあったんですね。

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsの解説によると、

From the shape, elevation, and solitary situation.

というところからだそうです。なるほど。

conspire

今年は戦後80年という節目の年ですが、中国では抗日戦勝記念日と呼ばれ、やはり80年を記念する軍事パレードが営まれました。

天安門広場にはロシアのプーチン大統領、北朝鮮の金正恩総書記、インドのモディ首相らが招かれました。とりわけ、中露、北朝鮮の3国のリーダーらが揃い踏みする光景は西側諸国には異様に映ります。

トランプ米大統領はSNSに「祝辞」（！？）を投稿したと報じられています。

ちょっと驚いたのが、

というくだりです。

"conspire"という動詞は、共謀する、とか結託すると訳されますが、悪意を持った企みという含意があります。

"conspire"という単語は、接頭辞con-と、呼吸するという意味のラテン語動詞spirareから成ります。共に呼吸する、同じ空気を吸う、というところから来ています。

ロシアと北朝鮮の首脳を名指しで"conspire"していると言うのは強烈なものがあります。

尤も辞書によれば、"conspire"にはニュートラルな意味合い、つまり悪い企みではなく、単に協働する、共に努力するという意味合いもあると書かれてはいます。

しかしながら、"conspire against"であり、両国がアメリカに対して悪巧みがあると意味していることは明らかです。

報道ではトランプ氏のこの発言を中露、北朝鮮に対する皮肉であるとしているものもありますが、皮肉を通り越して、「オマエらは米国の敵だ」と言っているのに近いのではないでしょうか。

アア溶岩とパホイホイ溶岩 ― lava

ハワイのキラウエア火山が噴火しているというニュースが目に留まりました。

活発化し、噴火口からは溶岩を噴出しているとあります。

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano resumed erupting on Tuesday, firing lava 330 ft (100 meters) into the sky from its summit crater.

It’s the 32nd episode of the volcano releasing molten rock since December 2024, when its current eruption began. So far, all the lava from this eruption has been contained within the summit crater inside Hawaii Volcanoes national park.

溶岩＝"lava"という単語はラテン語で滑るという意味の動詞であるlaborが語源で、イタリア語lavaを経て英語に入っています。

ところで溶岩（lava）にも2種類あることをご存知でしょうか？

かなり昔に知ったのですが、溶岩には「アア溶岩」（aa lava）というものと、「パホイホイ溶岩」（pahoehoe lava）と呼ばれるものがあります。

While on a family vacation in 2018, Jenny Suckale was rambling across an old Hawaiian lava flow when an abrupt change in the jet-black rocks caught her eye. On one side was the smooth, undulating lava type called pahoehoe (pronounced pah-hoy-hoy); on the other was the sharp, jagged kind known as aa (pronounced ah-ah).

「パホイホイ溶岩」というのは見た目の表面が滑らかなもので、これが流れるうちに「アア溶岩」と呼ばれる表面がギザギザした、岩石様のものに変容するということです。

いずれもハワイ語ですが、英単語として辞書にも載っています。

英語のことわざで、

Two wrongs don't make a right.

というのをご存知でしょうか？

"Two wrongs"というのは、何か悪い事（wrong）があった時に、それに対して同じような悪い事で以て対処する、というような意味合いとなります。何か嫌なことをされたのでやり返しても良い結果（a right）は生まない、という戒めの言葉です。

日本語でも同じようなことわざがあったはずと色々調べたのですが、思い出せません。

中国の故事成語に「報怨以徳」（怨みに報いるに徳を以てす）というものがあります。怨みに対して怨みを以てやり返すのではなく、逆に徳を以て対処する、ということで、意味合いとして近いと思われます。

不快な出来事に対して相手にも同じ不快を与えようとするのは、そうした相手の水準まで堕していることになります。そんな低い水準に留まるのではなく、高みから応ずることが良い結果をもたらす、という教えです。

昔々、小学生の頃、他人の家の呼び鈴を鳴らして逃げるというイタズラをやったことがあります。

夏休みだったと記憶しますが、同じアパートに住んでいた友達の部屋のベルを鳴らしてすぐに逃げるのです。怒って追いかけてくる友達から走って逃げました。

「ピンポンダッシュ」と呼ばれるイタズラはアメリカにもあるようです。

英語では、"ding-dong ditch"、または"doorbell ditch"というそうです。

"ding-dong"は呼び鈴の音を文字にした擬声語です。日本では「ピンポーン」が定番ですが、アメリカではもう少し重たい音がするというか、濁点のつく「ディンドン」です。

たわいのない子供のイタズラと言ってしまえばそれまでですが、イタズラでは済まされないこともあります。しかし、「ピンポンダッシュ」で逃げる子供を射殺するというのは聞いたことがありません。銃社会アメリカならではでしょうか。
