覚えられない単語 ― opprobrium

英語の語彙の幅広さは大変なものだと思うときがあります。英語に限らないかもしれませんが、どんなに勉強してきたと思っても、ニュース記事、雑誌や小説を読んでいると、必ず知らない、見たこともない単語に出くわします。

勉強が足らないのでしょう？もちろん、その通り（笑）！ 知らない単語は、犬猫の毛についたシラミを一匹ずつ潰していくように対処していくしかないのでしょうか？

今日の単語 opprobrium を、不意に質問されて意味を答えられる方はそう多くないのではないかと思います。私の学習の記録によれば、10年くらい前に一度学んでいるようなのですが、やはり身についていませんでした・・・。

今週は、覚えられない単語、というテーマでお届けしたいと思います。あくまでも私レベルでの話ですが・・・。

"opprobrium"を英和辞書で引くと、 不名誉、不面目、名折れ などとあります。英語辞書では、

disgrace

dishonor

shame

などの類義語としてリストされています。

中でもこの"opprobrium"という単語は、ラテン語起源のためか、disgraceやdishonorなどと比べて、ひときわ強い意味を持つ単語のようです。
