cataclysmic

The latest warnings about AI seem intended to boggle minds and shock everyone into action.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, a leader in the AI race, on Saturday called for a conscious slowdown in AI development in an essay posted to his website. AI is developing faster and faster and could outrun humans’ ability to manage it, he wrote.

“Left unchecked, it could outrun our ability to understand and control these systems, and so must be pursued very carefully, if at all,” Amodei wrote.
(Zachary B Wolf. AI and the end of humanity? OK, ‘doomer’ says one Trump official. CNN. September 13, 2026.)

Among those calling for government action is Sen. Bernie Sanders, who takes the warnings seriously.

“Nearly every day, there is a frightening new story about how Big Tech companies are losing control of the technology they are developing, with potentially cataclysmic results,” Sanders said in announcing proposed legislation to ban artificial superintelligence. “It is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced.”
(ibid.)

cataclysmic

cognitive war

The same hard-left network behind "No Kings" and other protests is leading the battle against data centers and Flock surveillance cameras, according to a Fox News Digital investigation and a new report.

In growing protests from San Francisco to North Carolina, organizations and activists associated with the same ecosystem that rallied against President Donald Trump, Israel, Elon Musk, Tesla and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the last two years are now taking on data-center construction and license-plate readers.

"These influence actions are cognitive warfare. Foreign actors don't need Americans to become pro-China," Rob Joyce, former director of cybersecurity at the National Security Agency, told Fox News Digital. "They need Americans to argue for the outcomes Beijing wants. And a free society that can't build the power and govern the advanced technology is going to wind up renting it from the adversary, read the PRC, that doesn't share its own values. And that scares me as an American."
(Arsa Q Nomani. FIRST ON FOX: ‘No Kings’ protest network behind fight against AI data centers and Flock cameras. Fox News. September 3, 2026.)

cognitive warfare

chancellor

Andy Burnham pledged to "bring back hope" to Britain, as he began his tenure as prime minister by appointing Labour stalwart John Healey as chancellor.

Speaking to broadcasters, Healey said the pair will "work in lockstep to meet the fiscal rules with a buffer against uncertainty" and on how they will "make life more affordable for working people right across the UK".
(Burnham pledges to 'bring back hope' as he makes Healey chancellor. BBC News. July 21, 2026.)

Chancellor of the Exchequer

The senior finance minister in the British government and a member of the prime minister's cabinet.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

circuit breaker

ANDY Burnham has promised to deliver a “circuit breaker for Britain” – but said the blueprint for his 10-year vision will not be unveiled until later this year.

The new Prime Minister pledged immediate help with the cost of living, saying families would get “some breathing space” from tomorrow when he unveils his first measures and explains “how we pay for them.”
(Martina Bet. 'NEED TO BE BETTER' Andy Burnham vows ‘this is a circuit breaker’ in first speech as PM – but we have to wait until later this YEAR for plan. The Sun. July 20, 2026.)

Burnham

circuit breaker

“I know people at home are fed up with politics. I hear you and I want to be honest with you – we have not been good enough, and we need to be better. We will be. We will make this moment a circuit breaker for Britain, bringing forward the biggest changes in the last 40 years – a new political model and a new economic model."
(ibid.)

cilantro

Amid an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic gastrointestinal illness that has infected 3,309 people in Michigan as of July 14, at least some Taco Bell restaurants stopped serving lettuce and cilantro, the Detroit Free Press learned after visiting six metro Detroit locations July 8-9.

Employees at Taco Bell restaurants in Trenton, Woodhaven, Wyandotte, Taylor, Riverview and Southgate all said those fresh produce items are no longer being served. No officials from the government or Taco Bell have publicly linked the fresh produce from the restaurant chain to the outbreak.
(Several Taco Bells stop serving lettuce as cyclosporiasis cases rise. Detroit Free Press. July 14, 2026.)

cilantro

このラテン語がcoliandrum(何故かrがlに変化?)

It’s an endless game of cat-and-mouse.

NYPD cops on Sunday launched their latest raid on the illegal open-air marketplace of counterfeits that has long turned Canal Street into an unsightly nightmare — but skeptical brick-and-mortar businesses say it won’t change a thing.

“They’re going to go wherever they get their stuff and set it right back up in five minutes,” the manager of a neighborhood beauty salon told The Post.
(NYPD raids illegal NYC vendors again — but Canal Street businesses say it won’t change a thing. New York Post. July 12, 2026.)

cat-and-mouse

1. Playfully or teasingly cruel, as in prolonging the pain or torment of another: the cat-and-mouse tactics of the interrogators.

2. Of or involving a suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted: "another cat-and-mouse thriller" (New York Times).
(American Heritage Dictionary)

behavior like that of a cat with a mouse: such as
a: the act of toying with or tormenting something before destroying it
b: a contrived action involving constant pursuit, near captures, and repeated escapes
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

carousel

Financial Times

The ritual of the UK prime ministerial resignation is now all too familiar: the lectern in Downing Street, the premier blinking in the daylight; the catch in the voice as they finish their statement. That Sir Keir Starmer is the fifth British leader to have stood down midterm since the Brexit vote 10 years ago displays how deeply the country has fallen into a damaging habit that it badly needs to break. The effort to do so now shifts to the man set to succeed Starmer: Andy Burnham.

A root cause of the leadership carousel is the stagnation in living standards and deterioration of public services since the 2008 financial crisis, exacerbated by Brexit and the Covid pandemic. Recently it has often stemmed from party members electing leaders based more on their grassroots appeal than their likely capabilities in office.
(The revolving door of Downing Street. Financial Times. June 23, 2026.)

leadership carousel

managerial carousel
carousel of ~ changes

carousel of failure
carousel of chaos and crisis
carousel of scandals

cuckooing

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people's homes are being taken over by criminals every week in the UK, usually to store and deal drugs, police chiefs have told the BBC.

Perpetrators of so-called cuckooing often target vulnerable people, including the elderly or disabled, by forcing themselves into homes to carry out illegal acts.
('I was a prisoner in my home': Drug gangs 'cuckooing' hundreds of homes a week, police warn. BBC News. June 9, 2026.)

Cuckooing - named after cuckoos, who frequently take over other birds' nests to lay their own eggs - is expected to become a specific criminal offence by the end of the year, carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence.
(ibid.)

chaebol

The family behind the South Korean corporate giant Samsung has completed its payment of a 12 trillion won (£6bn; $8bn) inheritance tax bill, the largest such settlement in the country's history.

Chairman Lee Jae-yong and other members of the family, including his mother Hong Ra-hee and sisters Lee Boo-jin and Lee Seo-hyun, paid the sum in six installments over the last five years.

The bill is tied to the estate left by the firm's late chairman Lee Kun-hee, who died in October 2020.

Samsung is South Korea's biggest chaebol, or family-owned business, with operations spanning electronics, heavy industry, construction and financial services.

Lee Kun-hee left a 26 trillion won fortune, including shares, property and art collections.

chaebol

Chonky

A massive sea lion is stealing all the attention at San Francisco's Pier 39, along with most of the dock.

The Stellar sea lion dubbed "Chonkers" has become a star among the hundreds of barking and pungent pinnipeds that have taken over at Pier 39's K-Dock.

People from across the country are coming to the tourist attraction to catch a glimpse of the pier's new superstar.
(Carlos E Castañeda. "Chonkers" the massive sea lion becomes star at San Francisco's Pier 39. CBS News. April 29, 2026.)

We define the relevant sense of chonky as “plump or chubby especially in an endearing way”; it is usually used to describe animals of such delightful physique. Chonky is also sometimes used to describe things—such as headphones, chairs, etc.—that are bulky or oversize. Chonky is an alteration of chunky that first appeared in print in the early 2000s.
(Merriam-Webster)

certain death

President Trump demanded that those left in Iran’s regime lay down their arms or face “certain death” while cautioning that more US troops were likely to die after three were killed during Iran’s response to the Saturday assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

“I once again urge the Revolutionary Guard, the Iranian military, the police, to lay down your arms and receive full immunity, or face certain death,” Trump said in a video message posted to Truth Social Sunday.

“It will be certain death,” he added. “It won’t be pretty.”
(Alex Oliveira. Trump warns Iranian regime to surrender or face ‘certain death’ — adds more Americans ‘will likely be’ lost. New York Post. March 1, 2026.)

Increasingly desperate as forecasters and government officials warned of certain death for coastal residents who remained in Ike's path, Winters spent the last few days on the phone, trying to find someone who could help her out of her first-floor apartment.
(Houston Chronicle, 2008)

Advances in hospital care mean that people today can recover from injuries and diseases that would have meant certain death in the not too distant past.
(Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 2013)

coprolalia

The BBC has apologised for not editing out a racial slur from its Bafta Film Awards coverage after a guest with Tourette's syndrome shouted out when two black actors were on stage.

John Davidson, whose life story inspired the film I Swear, shouted the N-word as Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the first prize of Sunday's ceremony.

Tourette's is characterised by sudden, involuntary and repetitive movements or sounds, known as tics.

Between 10% and 30% of people with the condition have tics that produce socially unacceptable words such as swearing - known as coprolalia - according to the Tourette's Action charity.

Davidson, a Tourette's campaigner from Galashiels in Scotland, who was made an MBE in 2019, shouted loudly several times before and during the Bafta ceremony.
(Steven McIntosh. BBC sorry for airing racial slur shouted by guest with Tourette's at Baftas. BBC News. February 23, 2026.)

coprolalia

clinical

On Monday afternoon in Bormio, the Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath processed his grief in a novel way after the men’s slalom gold medal had slipped away. First, he threw his ski poles as far as he could and then he hid in the woods.

Despite skiing in a blizzard, his opening run was smooth and clinical as he stopped the clock on 56.14sec.

That gave him an advantage of 0.59 over the Swiss world champion, Loïc Meillard, into the second leg. Several of his rivals – including Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, who won the giant slalom to give Brazil a first Winter Olympic medal in their history – had crashed out.
(Sean Ingle. ‘I just needed some time for myself’: Norwegian skier hides in woods after slalom gold heartache. The Guardian. February 16, 2026.)

his opening run was smooth and clinical

Objective and devoid of emotion; coolly analytical
(American Heritage Dictionary)

Done or performed with excellence and precision
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

crunch talks

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said Tuesday that the Arctic island chooses Denmark over the U.S., pushing back against Donald Trump’s repeated takeover threats.

“If we have to choose between the USA and Denmark here and now, we choose Denmark. We choose NATO, the Kingdom of Denmark and the EU,” Nielsen said, according to translated comments reported by Danish public broadcaster DR.

He was speaking alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at a news conference in Copenhagen, ahead of crunch talks between U.S., Danish and Greenlandic officials at the White House on Wednesday.
(Sam Meredith. Greenland’s PM has a blunt message for Trump: ‘We choose Denmark’ over the U.S. CNBC. January 13, 2026)

crunch talks

On Eve of Crunch Talks with U.S., Greenland Declares: ‘We Choose Denmark’.
(Nik Popli. On Eve of Crunch Talks with U.S., Greenland Declares: ‘We Choose Denmark’. Time. January 14, 2026.)

Vance, Rubio Hosting Denmark, Greenland for Crunch White House Talks.
(Shane. Roucher. Vance, Rubio Hosting Denmark, Greenland for Crunch White House Talks. Newsweek. January 13, 2026.)

A decisive confrontation.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

a critical point in the buildup of pressure between opposing elements : SHOWDOWN
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

crowd out

Excessive screen time is damaging toddlers’ ability to speak, the UK government has warned as it prepares to issue advice to parents for the first time on how to manage screen use in under-fives.

Research has found that children aged two with the highest screen use – about five hours a day – could say significantly fewer words than those with screen use of about 44 minutes a day.

Screen use is now near-universal in early childhood, with 98% of two-year-olds watching screens daily, the research also found.

The education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said parents and teachers had warned that “too much passive screen time can start to crowd out the talking, play and reading that are so important for children’s language and development in the early years”.
(Jessica Murray. Excessive screen time limits vocabulary of toddlers, experts warn. The Guardian. January 11, 2026.)

crowd out

To force away by taking up space; displace
(American Heritage Dictionary)

come hither

Brigitte Bardot, who has died at the age of 91, swept away cinema's staid 1950s' portrayal of women - coming to personify a new age of sexual liberation.

On screen, she was a French cocktail of kittenish charm and continental sensuality. One publication called her "the princess of pout and the countess of come hither", but it was an image she grew to loathe.

Ruthlessly marketed as a hedonistic sex symbol, Bardot was frustrated in her ambition to become a serious actress. Eventually, she abandoned her career to campaign for animal welfare.
(Sam Woodhouse. Brigitte Bardot: The blonde bombshell who revolutionised French cinema. BBC News. December 28, 2025.)

"the princess of pout and the countess of come hither"

come-hither look

civility

The U.S. Department of Transportation is launching what it's calling a "civility campaign" to promote good behavior on flights and at airports, as the busy holiday travel season gets underway. The department is naming the campaign "The Golden Age of Travel Starts with You" and announced the effort in a press release last week.

The DOT shared a minute-and-a-half video that begins with images of airline travelers of decades past, set to Frank Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me." The video then shifts abruptly to tense music and video clips of bare feet swiping on an in-flight monitor and then a series of brawls on flights.
(Kristin Wright . The U.S. Transportation Department is urging air passengers to be on good behavior. NPR. November 23, 2025.)

civility campaign

cute

On Monday, Trump said he would "love to do it" when asked about a potential 2028 bid. He also appeared to rule out the prospect of running on the 2028 Republican ticket as vice president, though said he would be "allowed to do that."

"I guess I think it's too cute," referring to a scenario under which the person elected president would step aside so he could take over. "Yeah, I would rule that out because it's too cute. I think the people wouldn't like that. It's too cute. It's not -- it wouldn't be right."
(Trump says 'it's pretty clear' he can't run for 3rd term. ABC News. October 30, 2025.)

it's too cute

American Heritage Dictionary

Clever or witty, especially in an impertinent or evasive way, as in falsely suggesting that one is ignorant about the matter at hand.

commando

French police revealed that they are hunting a “commando” of four robbers who pulled off the daring heist of priceless valuables at the Louvre on Sunday — and now they’ve got some key evidence.

No suspects have been identified yet in the daring caper, which saw the crew break into the world-famous museum, swipe millions of dollars in historic jewels and then flee — all within 4 to 7 minutes.
(Anthony Blair. French cops hunting ‘commando’ team of 4 Louvre robbers — here’s everything we know about them. New York Post. October 20, 2025.)

commando” of four robbers

creative destruction

Stockholm, Sweden (AP) — Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt won the Nobel memorial prize in economics Monday for their research into the impact of innovation on economic growth and how new technologies replace older ones, a key economic concept known as “creative destruction.”

The winners represent contrasting but complementary approaches to economics. Mokyr is an economic historian who delved into long-term trends using historical sources, while Howitt and Aghion relied on mathematics to explain how creative destruction works.
(Nobel Prize in economics awarded to Mokyr, Aghion and Howitt for explaining ‘innovation-driven’ growth. CNN. October 13, 2025.)

The term creative destruction was first coined by Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter in 1942. Schumpeter characterized creative destruction as innovations in the manufacturing process that increase productivity, describing it as the "process of industrial mutation that incessantly revolutionizes the economic structure from within, incessantly destroying the old one, incessantly creating a new one."
(Investopedia
