polka dot

The 2026 Cannes Film Festival has only just begun, but France's early-summer forecast is already testing VIP guests. Luckily, Demi Moore came prepared before the opening ceremony on May 12. Actually, the unruly breeze helped flaunt the 3D features on her custom polka-dot dress from Jacquemus.
(Meguire Hennes. Demi Moore's Polka-Dot Dress Might Have Already Won the Cannes Film Festival. Yahoo! Entertainment . May 13, 2026.)

polka dot(s)

tighten one’s belt

US consumers are eating at home to save money as they worry about a slowing economy and stubbornly high prices, leading restaurant chains to warn of declining sales.

McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski said that while sales at the burger chain returned to growth last quarter, visits from low-income customers in particular fell by “double-digits” between April and June as their real incomes declined.

“The result of that is you’re seeing people either skip occasions, so they’re skipping . . . breakfast or they’re trading down either within our menu or they’re trading down to eating at home,” Kempczinski said.
(Taylor Nicole Rogers. Restaurant chains feel the pinch as US consumers tighten their belts. Financial Times. August 9, 2025.)

tighten one’s belt

tighten the purse strings

getup

The Ukrainian war leader appeared to have learned his lesson from February’s disastrous Oval Office meeting with Trump and Vice President JD Vance, which descended into a shouting match after Zelensky was chided for his trademark military-style getup by a reporter.

Zelensky was pictured in the group photo of world leaders Tuesday wearing a black suit-style jacket and shirt, rather than his usual more casual get-up.
(Anthony Blair. Zelensky ditches T-shirt for a suit for sit-down meeting with President Trump. New York Post. June 25, 2025.)

ride on the coat-tails

Cider producer Thatchers has successfully won an appeal in a long-running trademark battle with supermarket chain Aldi.

The Somerset company sued the supermarket chain in 2022 over claims Aldi had "copycatted" its Cloudy Lemon Cider in "taste and appearance".

Thatchers claimed Aldi's Taurus drink, released in 2022, had been "riding on the coat-tails" of Thatchers' reputation.

Last January the High Court in London dismissed Thatchers' case, but the latest hearing has led to a judge ruling in Thatchers' favour. Aldi has said it will appeal.
(Chris Lockyer. Cidermaker wins appeal in 'lookalike' dispute. BBC News. January 20, 2025.)

"riding on the coat-tails" of Thatchers' reputation

The term “coattail” did not fully emerge into common political parlance until the mid-20th century, associated mainly with presidential landslide elections that swept into office congressional candidates of the president’s party who likely would not have won on their own: think Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952, Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964 and Ronald Reagan in 1980. In each instance their overwhelming margins of victory bolstered their parties’ voting strengths in Congress.
(Don Welfensberger. Presidential coattails can also have negative effects. The Hill. September 5, 2024.)

velvet glove

The Princess of Wales's "expertly-manoeuvred rise" since marrying into the Royal Family was hailed by a royal expert who described her as "steel in a velvet glove" just like another key royal was.

Princess Kate may now be one of the most recognisable women in the world but her assured figure is not the same as the one sported by the "once quiet and reserved" Kate Middleton back in the early days of her relationship with Prince William.
(Princess Kate dubbed 'steel in a velvet glove' as she's compared to key senior royal. Express. October 15, 2024.)

steel in a velvet glove

"iron hands in veltet glove"(また、iron fists in 〜)とも表現するようです。

Oxford

Sometimes a shoe is more than a shoe.

In the mayhem of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a single black Oxford shoe was left behind, abandoned on the platform where the former president was wounded by a sniper’s bullet and smothered in a Secret Service protective scrum.

Trump, it seems, lost one shoe in the melee on stage. That shoe – a sole survivor – reveals a lot about Trump as a consummate performer who cannily thinks first about himself and then about his audience. Under fire and on camera, the events in Butler offer a remarkable window into Trump’s primal instincts and mastery of political theater.

For Trump, one shoe is a reminder of his moment in crisis. His first impulse was that he needed his Oxfords and didn’t want to leave them behind. But then his second instinct took over, making an even more indelible mark. At this moment in American politics, it seems this enduring image of a raised fist in the midst of chaos and confusion may be winning over stability and comfort.
(Ben Sherwood. What Donald Trump’s Abandoned Shoe Reveals About Him and America. The Daily Beast. July 15, 2024.)

Oxford(s)"とは、

Oxford shoes

jean

Denim is having a moment with consumers, but it hasn't led to a major sales boost at Levi Strauss.

The jeans creator on Wednesday posted fiscal second-quarter revenue that fell just short of Wall Street's expectations at a time when shoppers are stocking their wardrobes with denim dresses, skirts and ultra low-rise baggy pants.

Levi's posted better-than-expected earnings as its direct sales to consumers and cost cutting continue to bear fruit. The company raised its dividend by 8% to 13 cents per share, its first increase in six quarters.

Still, shares fell about 12% in extended trading.
(Gabrielle Fonrouge. Levi's shares drop 12% as jeans maker's sales disappoint despite denim craze. CNBC. June 26, 2024.)

Gene fustian(ジェノバのファスティアン織)

Jean as a cloth comes from the phrase jean fustian, a modern spelling from the mid-16th century of Gene fustian. Fustian is a type of twilled cotton cloth. Gene (or Genes) is a Middle French spelling of Genoa, the port city in northwestern Italy. Jean fustian, or just jean, was a particular fabric that was manufactured in and distributed from Genoa, Italy.
(Andy Hollandbeck. In a Word: Denim Jeans and Geography. The Saturday Evening Post. September 12, 2019.)

tabby

Vermont State University Castleton's 2024 graduating class had the honor of sharing their commencement celebrations over the weekend with none other than Max, a tabby cat who has become something of a local celebrity during his time at the university.

"With a resounding purr of approval from the faculty, the Board of Trustees of the Vermont State Cat-leges has bestowed upon Max Dow the prestigious title of Doctor of Litter-ature, complete with all the catnip perks, scratching post privileges, and litter box responsibilities that come with it," the university said.
(Mary Walrath-Holdridge. Max the cat receives honorary doctorate in 'litter-ature’ from Vermont university. USA Today. May 20, 2024.)

organza

Julien's Auctions announced on Sunday that Princess Diana's ballerina-length evening dress by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury that she wore in Florence, Italy in April 1985 and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986, along with a matching illustration, sold for $1,148,080. The winning bid was 11 times its original estimate of $100,000.

According to Julien's Auctions, "The dress with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her being a patron of The English National Ballet."
(Stephanie Petit. Princess Diana's Dress Sells for a Record-Breaking $1.1 Million at Auction — 11 Times the Estimated Price. People. December 18, 2023.)

a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow

cardigan

Women who serve in the Missouri House will face a tougher dress code when they return to the floor this week after a debate that Democrats panned as a pointless distraction from the issues facing the state.

The new rules require female legislators and staff members to wear a jacket such as a cardigan or blazer. The Republican lawmaker who introduced the change said it was done to ensure decorum and mirror the men’s dress code. Democrats called it ridiculous, saying women shouldn’t be policed for their fashion choices.
(Missouri Democrats say House dress code debate a distraction. Associated Press. January 15, 2023.)

a jacket such as a cardigan or blazer

balaclava

Dozens of masked men, suspected of being tied to a White nationalist group, were arrested near an Idaho pride event on Saturday after they were found packed in the back of a U-Haul truck.

Couer d'Alene police confirmed in a press briefing that 31 individuals from a variety of states were inside the U-Haul after it was stopped by local and Idaho State Police several blocks from the pride event on Saturday afternoon.

The several dozen men inside the truck wore khakis, navy blue shirts and beige hats with white balaclavas covering their faces and police say that some of them wore patches that identified with Patriot Front, a White supremacist group, according to some civil rights organizations.
(Andrew Mark Miller. Idaho police arrest dozens on suspicion of conspiracy to riot at gay pride event. Fox News. June 11, 2022.)

A balaclava is a knit cap used for protection against the cold that covers the head, neck, and most of the face. It is sometimes worn as a mask by criminals and terrorists.

The name comes from the site of a Crimean War battle in 1854, where the British army reportedly first used these caps.
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

empty suit

Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose purchase of Twitter remains ongoing, slammed President Biden in a podcast interview Monday and warned that if the government continues printing money, inflation will get worse and the U.S. might follow the path of Venezuela.

Musk, who said he has voted "overwhelmingly for Democrats," slammed the Democratic Party and Biden in particular. He suggested that Biden is something of an empty suit.

"The real president is whoever controls the teleprompter," the Tesla CEO said. "The path to power is the path to the teleprompter."
(Tyle O'Neil. Elon Musk slams Biden: 'The real president is whoever controls the teleprompter'. Fox Business. May 17, 2022.)

something of an empty suit

Merriam-Webster

an ineffectual executive

under one’s belt

With more than 30 years of marriage under their belt, one Virginia couple — Hannah Keeley, a master life coach, and her husband, Blair Keeley, a marketing professional — claim they’ve never had a single argument.

They also say they’ve never even raised their voices at each other, including while parenting their seven children, who are all now grown.
(Cortney Moore. Virginia couple married for 30 years claim they’ve never argued. Fox News. March 7, 2022.)

With more than 30 years of marriage under their belt

in one's possession; as part of one's experience

too big for one’s britches

唐突ですが、"too big for one’s britches"という表現をご存知でしょうか?

It was recently announced that Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk would be making his hosting debut on "Saturday Night Live" on May 8.  The decision apparently caused a disconnect with cast members, who took to Twitter to express their opinions.

Behind-the-scenes tension is still present in the hours ahead of the show, according to the New York Post. An unnamed industry source who said they know the show intimately told the outlet the new cast "are getting a little too big for their britches."

The criticism from cast members came after the announcement that Musk would host the show. The CEO then tweeted: "Let's find out just how live Saturday Night Live really is."
(Zahra Tayeb. 'SNL' cast members have been accused of 'getting a little too big for their britches' by an industry insider, following swipes at Elon Musk. Insider. May 8, 2021.)

too big for one’s pants
too big for one’s trousers

too big for one’s boots

kerchief

When it comes to glamorous head-wear, there’s no denying the retro romance of a silky headscarf – think Audrey Hepburn and her trademark babushka, or any given film scene where the heroine takes to the road in a convertible, styled with sunglasses and headscarf.

ugly sweater

Microsoft has launched a new Windows software-themed ugly sweater on its Xbox Gear Shop dedicated to the infamous Windows game Minesweeper.

This is Microsoft’s second year of Windows-themed ugly sweaters. Last year, the company released three ugly sweater designs, including one garment based on the timeless MS Paint application, which humorously looked as if it were designed in that very app.

Microsoft is selling the Minesweeper ugly sweater for the explosive price of $74.99 — $5 more expensive than last year’s designs. The sweaters sold out in 24 hours last year with a late December restock, so if you want to look like a pro at flagging mines this holiday, then get one soon.
(Umar Shakir. Microsoft is selling ugly Windows sweaters again, and this time, it’s Minesweeper. The Verge. November 30, 2021.)

Move over twinkling fir trees and wreaths, eggnog, stockings and the office secret Santa -- there's a new kid in town. Over the last decade the ugly Christmas sweater has firmly embedded itself in yuletide culture.

The garment has quickly become an essential part of the holidays, ubiquitous as Christmas lights and wrapping paper. It's obnoxious and tacky, but also fuzzy and kind of wholesome -- the fashion equivalent of a Hallmark Christmas movie (with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek).
(Marianna Cerini. A cozy history of the ugly Christmas sweater. CNN. November 15, 2021.)

sequin

Along with vegetables and marigold, Dr. Theanne Schiros has been growing a sneaker at her home in Brooklyn. Schiros is an assistant professor at FIT and a research scientist at Columbia University who focuses on biofabrication, or growing textiles in labs. As part of the One X One incubator program, an initiative by Swarovski and Slow Factory with support from the United Nations, she’s been working with Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School to grow a zero-waste, low-carbon-footprint version of a Public School shoe out of fermented bacteria.

Phillip Lim worked with industrial designer Charlotte McCurdy to create sequins out of algae, resulting in a gorgeous green dress that challenges our ideas about “natural fibers.”
(Sarah Spellings. Growing Sequins and Sneakers in a Lab With Public School and Phillip Lim. Vogue. December 8, 2020.)

denim

Ever since the CDC announced that Americans should be wearing a face covering in public to help slow the spread of coronavirus, reusable cloth options have been popping up everywhere. From designers on Etsy pivoting their storefronts to selling masks to brands like Reformation adding them to its lineup, there are plenty of places to order one online.

Apparel brand Rag & Bone is one of the latest labels to launch face masks. If the name sounds familiar, that’s probably because you’ve seen Jennifer Aniston call it out as one of her go-to brands for jeans. And she’s not the only celeb that’s a fan — Blake Lively and Katie Holmes have also shown it some love.

Rag & Bone’s new Stealth Masks are lined with 100 percent cotton, have elastic ear straps, and come in a variety of designs like denim and gingham. You can pre-order a pack of three for $55, or purchase an individual mask for $30. The brand will be donating $5 from each purchase to City Harvest, with the remainder going towards those most affected by coronavirus, local workers, and the manufacture of more masks.
(Christina Butan. This Celeb-Loved Denim Brand Launched Face Masks That Support a Good Cause. People. May 5, 2020.)

serge de Nimes

(3) ― gingham

gingham

American Heritage Dictionary

A yarn-dyed cotton or cotton blend fabric usually woven in checks, plaids, or stripes.

corduroy

cord du roy
