invest

An Illinois mother had become “very invested” in the high-profile Lindsay Clancy murder trial before prosecutors say she killed her 2-year-old son on Tuesday, according to witnesses cited in court documents.

Corie Walsh, a 40-year-old resident of Frankfort, was charged with first-degree murder after prosecutors allege she fatally strangled her son, Barrett Walsh, according to a complaint filed on Friday and obtained by CNN affiliate WLS.

At the time over 1,000 miles away, the jury had been deliberating in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, a former nurse accused of killing her three children. Walsh had been discussing the case on a group text message with her friends up until 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, prosecutors said witnesses told them, according to court documents obtained by WLS.
(Dalia Faheid. Illinois mother texted friends about Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial hours before killing her 2-year-old, prosecutors say. CNN. September 7, 2026.)

… had become “very invested” in the high-profile Lindsay Clancy murder trial…

A suburban Illinois mother who had become interested in the Lindsay Clancy case has been charged with murder after she allegedly killed her 2-year-old son then attempted to harm herself, according to police and court records.

A quiet street in the affluent village of Frankfort, Illinois, about 35 miles southwest of Chicago, became a scene of terror earlier this week when the 2-year-old child was found hanging in the basement and his mother, Corie A. Walsh, was discovered in a bathtub in an apparent suicide attempt.

Walsh, 40, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder on Friday, police announced.

Before the killing, Walsh had “recently become very invested in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial,” prosecutors said in their petition to deny her pretrial release.
(Marlene Lenthang. Illinois mother charged with murder in death of her 2-year-old. NBC News. September 5, 2026.)

to involve or engage especially emotionally

"invest"という単語は接頭辞in-とvest(服を着せるという意味のラテン語)から成ります。

idiolect

On Friday, exactly six months after Nancy Guthrie was abducted, police released two ransom notes in the hope that they would help identify her kidnappers.

While the language in the notes might seem straightforward, police said the writer's "distinct linguistic characteristics" may be recognisable.

"There are a number of pieces of information in these notes that just might jar someone to say 'you know, I've heard that'," said Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

A forensic linguist told the BBC it's possible to glean crucial information about a person from just a few sentences.

"It's built upon the premise that we each carry an idiolect, or a word print, of our own that distinguishes our language from others," said William Eggington, a retired linguistics professor from Brigham Young University who is now a forensic consultant.
(How ransom notes could help catch Nancy Guthrie's kidnappers. BBC News. August 4, 2026.)

infraction

The foul in question is called double-touching. Under World Curling rules, when delivering a stone a player may retouch the handle as many times as they wish — as long as they do so before the hog line, the thick stripe that marks the end of the release zone. Touching the handle after the hog line — double touching — is not allowed.

Modern stones have hog-line sensors built into the handles, so they reliably detect late release of the handle. But they don’t detect a brief touch on the granite itself. And without an umpire watching closely — or without video evidence — that kind of infraction can be difficult to spot.
(Kevin Baxter. Olympic curling scandal threatens to forever alter the sport’s culture of trust. Los Angeles Times. February 18, 2026.)

ipso facto

The crucial part:

“… If this information had fallen into the hands of U.S. adversaries, Houthi forces might have been able to counter U.S. forces or reposition personnel and assets to avoid planned U.S. strikes,” the report says. “Even though these events did not ultimately occur, the Secretary’s actions created a risk to operational security that could have resulted in failed U.S. mission objectives and potential harm to U.S. pilots.”

Also importantly, even as Hegseth might not have shared technically classified information, he was still breaking the rules. The IG says he “did not comply with DoD Instruction 8170.01,” because he used his personal phone and shared nonpublic information on the app.

Ipso facto, Hegseth violated the rules, and that violation risked “harm to U.S. pilots.”
(Aaron Blake. Why the new ‘Signalgate’ IG report is so damning for Pete Hegseth. CNN. December 4, 2025.)

by the fact itself

item

Katy Perry is celebrating another trip around the sun with Justin Trudeau by her side.

Neither Perry nor Trudeau has publicly commented on their rumored relationship in recent months amid speculation that they are an item. In July, Trudeau, who served as prime minister of Canada from 2015 to 2025, fueled relationship rumors after he attended a Perry concert, seemingly solo, in Montreal.
(Brendan Morrow. Katy Perry, Justin Trudeau hold hands in public outing on her birthday. USA TODAY.October 26, 2025.)

speculation that they are an item

a couple in a romantic or sexual relationship

ice baby

Susie Wiles, President-elect Trump’s campaign co-chair and a veteran political consultant, was picked as his chief of staff on Thursday.
“Susie Wiles just helped me achieve one of the greatest political victories in American history, and was an integral part of both my 2016 and 2020 successful campaigns,” Trump said in a statement.

“Susie likes to stay sort of in the back. Let me tell you, the ice baby. We call her the ice baby,” Trump said.
(Juliann Ventura. Who is Susie Wiles, Trump’s new White House chief of staff? The Hill. November 7, 2024.)

ice baby

SUSIE WILES, who orchestrated DONALD TRUMP’s improbable political comeback alongside CHRIS LaCIVITA, will serve as his White House chief of staff.

Ahead of the announcement, it seemed like most of the GOP was coalescing around “Ice Baby” or “Ice Maiden” (as Trump affectionately calls her) for the job.
(Florida woman takes job as White House chief of staff. Politico. November 7, 2024.)

Ice Maiden

(idiomatic) An ice queen; a beautiful but heartless woman.
(Wiktionary)

invective

Former President Trump sparked a new furor with comments over the weekend in which he disparaged Vice President Harris as “mentally impaired” and “mentally disabled.”

The remarks —  coming initially at a Saturday rally in Wisconsin and repeated in broad terms the following day in Pennsylvania — have thrown Republicans onto the defensive, outraged Democrats and sparked condemnation from disability advocacy groups.

But they also draw puzzlement from political insiders who believe Trump’s penchant for personal invective does him no favors electorally, serving only to turn off some of the undecided voters he needs to win over this November if he is to avenge his 2020 loss to President Biden.
(Niall Stanage. The Memo: Trump sparks new furor with attacks on Harris’s mental capacity. The Hill. September 30, 2024.)

invective

inveigh

impale

The near-fatal freak accident happened onboard the Jubilee as part of the Fairhope Fishing Company’s expedition on Monday, where the crew confronted a massive blue marlin that shot out of the water and launched towards the fisherman’s neck.

The short clip shows one of the seven men on board the vessel reeling in the catch while the marlin flails up and out of the water, attempting to break free of the fishing line.

In the blink of an eye, the massive fish hops onto the boat and nearly pierces another man standing off to the side.
(Richard Pollina. Terrifying moment fisherman is nearly impaled by flying Marlin in front of crew: ‘Close call’. New York Post. July 17, 2024.)

fisherman is nearly impaled by flying Marlin

the massive fish hops onto the boat and nearly pierces another man…

ICEing

ICEing

A Georgia family called 911 earlier this summer after a staffer for Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm used a nonelectric vehicle to hog the only open EV charging station outside a local Walmart while the Biden administration official was still en route.

Granholm, 64, was on a four-day road trip from North Carolina to Tennessee, promoting green energy with a traveling caravan of electric and nonelectric vehicles, when a member of her advance team used a gasoline-powered car to reserve a charging station for her, according to NPR, angering at least one family who had been waiting in line.

The inconsiderate practice is known as “ICEing” — a reference to the internal-combustion engines inside gasoline-powered vehicles — and is subject to a $100 fine in Washington, DC, where the Department of Energy is headquartered, but it is not illegal in Grovetown, where the June incident occurred.
(Victor Nava. Cops called after Jennifer Granholm staffer uses gas-powered car to hold EV charging spot for Biden energy secretary. New York Post. September 12, 2023.)

Internal Combustion Engine

ick

Here’s the skinny on the latest fashion trend.

The men of TikTok have finally caught on — skinny jeans are an ick. That is to say they’re out, uncool, cringe-worthy, totally yesterday.

Gen Z already denounced the slim-fitting denim for women, and now men are following suit by trading their skinny jeans for baggier trousers — to much applause.
(Brooke Kato. Gen Z has canceled skinny jeans — here’s what’s replacing them. New York Post. May 23, 2023.)

skinny jeans are an ick

(4) — incumbent

incumbent

incumbent mayor
candidates seeking to oust incumbents

ignoramus

Critics took aim at President Biden for comparing asylum-seeking immigrants to Jews fleeing Nazi Germany during the Holocaust.

"What a disgusting and awful statement from this ignoramus, and the corrupt media are silent," conservative commentator Mark Levin said on Twitter Friday in reaction to Biden's remarks.

Biden's comments came in response to a reporter Thursday, who asked the president whether he believed migration is a human right.
(Michael Lee. Biden slammed for comparing illegal aliens to Jews fleeing Nazis: 'Shameful and out of touch'. Fox News. January 8, 2023.)

a disgusting and awful statement from this ignoramus

つまり、動詞の活用形であり、その意味は"We do not know."

innumeracy

Rishi Sunak will announce plans for all pupils in England to study maths up to the age of 18 to tackle innumeracy and better equip them for the modern workplace as he sets out his priorities for the year ahead.

In his first speech of 2023, the prime minister will expand on his ambitions for Britain amid concern from some Tory MPs that he lacks a big vision for the country and could be consumed instead by battling a series of crises around the cost of living, the health service and strikes.
(Pippa Crerar. Rishi Sunak to propose maths for all pupils up to age 18. The Guardian. January 3, 2023.)

illiterate
illiteracy

impervious

When her partner tested positive for the coronavirus two days before Christmas, Michelle Green worried she, too, would become ill.

Somehow, Green never tested positive.

Scientists around the world are investigating how a dwindling number of people such as Green have managed to dodge the coronavirus for more than two years, even after the highly transmissible omicron variant drove a record-shattering surge in cases this winter.

Scientists don’t know why some people might be impervious to the coronavirus, but Nuzzo said one hypothesis could be that some individuals have fewer receptors in their noses, throats and lungs for the virus to bind to. Other possible explanations could be prior exposure to a related virus or simply being born with an immune system better suited to fighting SARS-CoV-2.
(The lucky few to never get coronavirus could teach us more about it. The Washington Post. May 8, 2022.)

why some people might be impervious to the coronavirus

LONDON (AP) — Prince Andrew has been stripped of his honorary military roles as the growing furor over allegations that he sexually abused a teenage girl trafficked by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein threatened to taint the House of Windsor.

Buckingham Palace said late Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had also agreed that Andrew, 61, will give up his honorary leadership of various charities, known as royal patronages.

He will also no longer use the title “his royal highness″ in official settings, British media said.

The decision is an effort to insulate the monarchy from the fallout from potentially years of sordid headlines as Andrew vows to fight a lawsuit filed by an American woman, Virginia Giuffre, who alleges she was forced to have sex with the prince when she was 17.
(UKs embattled Prince Andrew loses honorary military titles. The Associated Press. January 13, 2022.)

an effort to insulate the monarchy from the fallout from potentially years of sordid headlines

However, Charles Elson, director of the University of Delaware's corporate governance center, said other audit committees included similar "boilerplate" language that attempted to insulate themselves legally from corporate scandals unfolding at the time.

influence peddling

A Paris court on Monday found French former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling and sentenced him to one year in prison and a two-year suspended sentence. The 66-year-old politician, who was president from 2007 to 2012, was convicted for having tried to illegally obtain information from a senior magistrate in 2014 about a legal action in which he was involved.

influence peddling

inaptronym

Eight people were shot near a SEPTA train station in Philadelphia Wednesday afternoon, police said.

One person is in custody, authorities said, adding that two weapons were recovered.

The victims are between the ages of 17 and 71, police said.

"It’s very brazen," Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said of the afternoon shooting.
(8 shot in Philadelphia, 1 person in custody: Police. ABC News. February 18, 2021.)

Philly’s new head of police is a California native named Danielle Outlaw.

When she’s sworn in as commissioner in February, Outlaw will be the first Black woman ever to hold the post. That historic milestone wasn’t lost on Philadelphians.

The recognition played out alongside some social media smirking. Let’s be honest — a high ranking law enforcement officer named “Outlaw” is pretty hilarious.

The name is indubitably inaptronymous. Which is to say, a person named Outlaw working in law enforcement is ironic, because the name is the opposite of the profession.
(Layla A. Jones. What’s in a name? From criminal to elite, the history of ‘Outlaw’. Billy Penn. January 9, 2020.)

inaptronymous

inoculate

そのお名前が、William Shakespeare(ウィリアム・シェイクスピアさん)。

LONDON — To be or not to be vaccinated, that is the question.

After an 81-year-old named William Shakespeare became the second person in the West to receive the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine in Britain outside clinical trials Tuesday, social media erupted with joy, puns and many quotes from the great British playwright.

“They really are prioritising the elderly: this guy is 456,” wrote one user, while the term “Two Gentlemen of Corona,” a play on “The Two Gentlemen of Verona,” swiftly became a top trend in Britain.

Others quipped that the first batch of inoculations, part of the first mass coronavirus immunization campaign in the West, marked the “Taming of the Flu.”
(Jennifer Hassan. Man named William Shakespeare, one of the first to get Pfizer vaccine, sets off pun cascade. The Washington Post. December 9, 2020.)

To be or not to be..."

inoculation, inoculate

inshallah

(CNN) — During one of the more charged moments of the chaotic US presidential debate, former Vice President Joe Biden dropped a phrase from everyday Muslim and Arab vocabulary and lit up the internet.

Pressing President Donald Trump on when the American public would get to see his long-anticipated tax returns, Biden questioned: "When? Inshallah?"

In certain vernacular, "inshallah" serves as a non-committal response to a question.

(Tamara Qiblawi. Biden uses 'inshallah' in response to Trump during debate, lighting up Twitter. CNN. September 30, 2020.)

inshallah

if Allah wills : God willing

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Taken literally, the term "inshallah," consists of three Arabic words (In sha' Allah) which translate into "if God wills it." Spiritually it represents a submission to God's will. It can perhaps be seen as the Muslim counterpart to the Yiddish adage, "Man plans, and God laughs."

Children in the Muslim world will often say that when a parent responds to a question with "inshallah," it signals an unfulfilled promise, while unreliable timekeeping is lightheartedly chalked up to "inshallah timing."

(ibid.)

For many in the Muslim and Arab world, the phrase retains its original spiritual purpose. Far from providing license for fickle behavior, "inshallah" represents a relinquishment of control over the uncontrollable. It is an acknowledgement that while one will try to fulfill their goal, there could be God-like circumstances that may get in the way. To many, the utterance of the phrase is an exercise in humility.

(ibid.)

insurrection

Insurrection Act

President Trump threatened Monday to take military action in American cities if the violent demonstrations that have been taking place in recent days aren't stamped out.

"If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then I will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them," Trump said in a short statement in the Rose Garden at the White House.

To do that, the president would need to invoke what's known as the Insurrection Act of 1807.
(Domenico Montanaro. What Is The Insurrection Act That Trump Is Threatening To Invoke?. NPR. June 1, 2020.)

insurgence
insurgency
