fog line

A longtime chef for the famous Japanese restaurant chain Nobu was killed over the weekend in Malibu, California, when a teen driver crashed into his parked vehicle, where he was sleeping while waiting for his shift to start.

The California Post reported that the teen driving the Range Rover in Uchimiya’s case on Saturday veered across the road’s fog line, which separates the traffic lane from the shoulder – and hit the chef’s car.
(Edward Helmore. Nobu chef killed by teen driver who crashed into his parked car in Malibu. The Guardian. October 5, 2026.)

veered across the road’s fog line

fugazi

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nabbed hundreds of knockoff watches, glasses and headwear in Ohio last week.

Gold and silver watches and hats bearing the distinctive-looking Coach and Gucci patterns were among the 111 items seized from parcels entering the US at the Port of Cincinnati.

Most counterfeit goods are sold online, with over 90% of all seizures taking place in international mail environments. The rise in encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram have increased sales, allowing fugazi items to be shipped straight to people’s doors.
(Emily Goodin. Border agents seize dozens of counterfeit watches, sunglasses — potentially worth up to $20M. New York Post. June 11, 2026.)

fugazi

fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in (a body bag)

frail

frail

Millions of sick Americans could have a tougher time retaining — or even signing up for — Medicaid coverage after the first-ever federal work requirement begins in January in most states.

That’s because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a new rule this week that takes a harder line on defining which low-income adult enrollees are eligible for an exemption for those who are “medically frail.” The rule guides states on implementing the work mandate.

To qualify for the exemption, not only must enrollees have an illness or medical condition, such as cancer or a behavioral health issue, but that condition must also significantly impair their ability to comply with the work mandate, according to the rule, released Monday.
(Tami Luhby. The Trump administration makes it harder for some sick Americans to maintain Medicaid. CNN. June 7, 2026.)

fold

Spirit Airlines has almost finished refunding customers for flights abruptly canceled over the weekend as the company folded.

The budget airline left thousands of customers and staff stranded after deciding on Saturday to pull the plug on a business that was struggling for years, before a surge in the price of jet fuel blew a new hole in its budget.

Spirit had scheduled about 4,000 flights through 15 May, according to Reuters.
(Roque Planas. Spirit Airlines says it has nearly finished refunding customers after shuttering. The Guardian. May 2, 2026.)

the company folded

feckless

Pete Hegseth denied that the US-Israel war on Iran, which the Pentagon estimates has cost the US at least $25bn, is “a quagmire” and claimed critics of the operation posed a greater threat to the US than Iran itself.

Hegseth came under pressure to set out Washington’s strategy for the conflict as he appeared before the House armed services committee on Wednesday for a marathon hearing alongside Gen Dan Caine, chair of the joint chiefs of staff. The US defense secretary asked lawmakers to approve $1.5tn military spending – and then described some of those lawmakers as “the biggest challenge” to the war effort.

“The biggest adversary we face at this point are the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans,” he declared. These remarks did not appear in a prepared statement submitted to the committee.
(Joseph Gedeon. Hegseth denies Iran war is ‘quagmire’ as cost to US hits estimated $25bn. The Guardian. April 29, 2026.)

the reckless, feckless and defeatist words of congressional Democrats and some Republicans

The argument for non-cooperation is that Trump is in a category by himself -- that he is so strange, unorthodox, reckless, feckless, unpredictable and, ultimately, dangerous that longstanding traditions and principles should be tossed to the wind in a last-ditch effort to save the Republic.

food forward

7-Eleven is slashing hundreds of stores — and supersizing what’s left — as the convenience giant pivots from quick pit stops to full-on food destinations.

Amid a national trend towards better eats and bigger stores from other, growing chains like Wawa, Sheetz and Bu-cee’s, the long-running brand confirmed it will shutter a whopping 645 locations during its 2026 fiscal year (March 1, 2026, through Feb. 28, 2027) — as part of a sweeping overhaul that swaps struggling storefronts for larger footprints and a whole lot more grub.

At the heart of the revamp is a new “food-forward” store format — one that leans heavily into prepared meals, drinks and an upgraded in-store experience.
(Marissa Matozzo. 7-Eleven will close 600 stores this year — to prepare for massive makeover. New York Post. April 13, 2026.)

Fast-food restaurants are losing breakfast customers to convenience stores.

Morning meal traffic to fast-food chains rose 1% in the three months ended in July, while visits to food-forward convenience stores climbed 9% in the same period, according to market research firm Circana.

lunar flyby

NASA's Artemis II Moon mission successfully launched from Florida's John F. Kennedy Space Center on Wednesday afternoon at 6:35pm ET.

Artemis II's planned crewed lunar flyby is set to mark the closest humanity has come to the Moon since the Apollo days.

It's also a key step towards NASA's grand ambition to return human boots to lunar soil, and the Trump administration's dreams of a permanent Moon base.

Artemis II is designed as a "dress rehearsal" before a lunar landing planned for later this decade. (Apollo 8 and 10 served similar roles before Apollo 11 and Neil Armstrong's "one giant leap.")
(Alex Fitzpatrick. Artemis II successfully launches for Moon mission. Axios. April 1, 2026.)

Artemis II's planned crewed lunar flyby is set to mark the closest humanity has come to the Moon since the Apollo days.

A flight passing close to a specified target or position, especially a maneuver in which a spacecraft or satellite passes sufficiently close to a body to make detailed observations without orbiting or landing.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

francophone

The CEO of Air Canada will retire later this year, after being criticised for failing to speak French in a condolence video following last week's fatal collision at LaGuardia Airport in New York, that killed two pilots.

Michael Rousseau informed the airline that he will be stepping down by the end of the company's third quarter, Air Canada said in a statement on Monday.

Rousseau had faced calls to resign after delivering his condolences in English only. One of the pilots who died, Antoine Forest, was from French-speaking Quebec.
(Nadine Yousif. Air Canada CEO to retire after English-only condolence video controversy. BBC News. March 30, 2026.)

Quebec Premier François Legault said he believed Rousseau should step down if he was unable to speak French.

Legault welcomed Air Canada's announcement and said in a post on X Monday that the next CEO should speak French as a "matter of respect for the employees, francophone customers, and all Quebecers".
(ibid.)

Rousseau, who lives in Montreal but is an anglophone, had come under fire for his French language skills in the past, including shortly after he was appointed as CEO of Air Canada in 2021.
(ibid.)

force majeure

March 7 (Reuters) - Kuwait Petroleum Corporation began cutting oil output on Saturday and declared force majeure, adding to earlier oil and gas reductions from Iraq and Qatar as the U.S.-Iran war blocked shipments from the Middle East for the eighth consecutive day.

The war has blocked the world's most important oil artery the Strait of Hormuz which is responsible for 20% of global oil and LNG supply. Analysts predict the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia will have to also cut output soon as they run out of oil storage.
(Kuwait declares force majeure, cuts crude oil output due to Middle East conflict. The Reuters. March 7, 2026.)

Force majeure, a French term meaning “superior force,” is a clause included in many international commercial contracts. It allows companies to suspend contractual obligations when extraordinary events beyond their control, such as war, natural disasters or government actions, make it impossible to fulfill them.
(Jesus Mesa. What Is Force Majeure? Gulf Companies Shut Down Oil Production. Newsweek. March 6, 2026.)

China is banning hidden door handles on all cars sold in the country, becoming the first country in the world to target the feature – which was popularized by Tesla but has for years drawn concern over safety risks.

The hidden door handles are a signature feature of Tesla’s vehicles, and the ban comes as Elon Musk’s company reports declining worldwide sales and struggles with fierce competition in China, its second-biggest market.

On the outside, electric door handles sit flush against the side of the door, requiring a user to press down on the handle to release the lever; from the inside, riders press a button to open the door again.
(Jessie Yeung. China to ban hidden car door handles made popular by Tesla in world first. CNN. February 3, 2026.)

electric door handles sit flush against the side of the door

Having surfaces in the same plane; even
(American Heritage Dictionary)

having or forming a continuous plane or unbroken surface
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Two-time major winner Fuzzy Zoeller has died at the age of 74.

Born Frank Urban Zoeller Jr, the American clinched the 1979 Masters in a play-off to become the first player since 1935 to win the tournament on his debut - and the last.

However, Zoeller was involved in controversy in 1997 over remarks he made about Tiger Woods.

After Woods won the Masters, which entitled him to choose the Champions Dinner menu for the following year, Zoeller said: "You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year.

"Got it? Or collard greens or whatever the hell they serve."

Zoeller later apologised and said his words had been misconstrued.
(ByMandeep Sanghera. Two-time major winner Zoeller dies aged 74. BBC News. November 27, 2025.)

You pat him on the back and say congratulations and enjoy it and tell him not to serve fried chicken next year.

I have a confession. I'm an African-American and I love fried chicken. I like my chicken with collard greens, and macaroni and cheese.

I have white friends who love the same Southern fried combination. They are writers, academics, editors, golfers, truck drivers, doctors, hunters, fishermen, barbecue joint owners and guys who like to watch SEC football on Saturday afternoons with a can of beer in their laps.

I could have told Sergio Garcia all of this had I been at the European Tour awards dinner on Tuesday night near London, when he quipped that he would serve fried chicken if his sworn enemy, Tiger Woods, came over for dinner.
(Farrell Evans. Sergio Garcia should know better. ESPN. May 22, 2013.)

femicide

果たして、"femicide"とは"the murder of a woman"、そして終身刑が科されるとのことです。

Deputies in the Italian parliament have voted unanimously to introduce the crime of femicide – the murder of a woman, motivated by gender – as a distinct law to be punished with a life sentence.

The idea of a law on femicide had been discussed in Italy before but the murder of Giulia Cecchettin by her ex-boyfriend was a tragedy that shocked the country into action.

In late November 2023, the 22-year-old was stabbed to death by Filippo Turetta, who then wrapped her body in bags and dumped it by a lakeside.
(Sarah Rainsford. Italian parliament unanimously votes to make femicide a crime. BBC News. November 26, 2025.)

…femicide – usually defined as when a girl or woman is killed because of her gender…
(Barbie Latza Nadeau. Italy has a femicide problem. Critics say Prime Minister Georgia Meloni should do more to fix it. CNN. November 18, 2025.)

(The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women)でしたが、それに合わせての法案可決であったということです。

food loss and waste

Is there a difference between food loss and food waste?

You’re right! Food loss happens when food gets lost or spoiled before it reaches the store, like on the farm or in a factory. Food waste happens when good food gets thrown away at the store, at a restaurant or at home.
(The Food Loss and Waste Challenge -

fair shake

"You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."

"I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he continued. "France – they kind of don’t give a s--- about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids."
(Christina Dugan Ramirez. George Clooney explains why he 'worried' about raising his kids in Hollywood. Fox News. October 6, 2025.)

I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life

A bargain or deal: getting a fair shake.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

give a person a square shake

footnote

Ahead of the suddenly announced summit in Alaska on Friday between Putin and US President Donald Trump, one European diplomat, who declined to be named as they were not authorized to speak on the record, told CNN: “We are at risk of being a footnote in history.”

In part, European fears are down to just how little is known about what the Kremlin has proposed in order to halt the fighting in Ukraine. Putin has given no details. US envoy Steve Witkoff said nothing after his meeting with the Russian leader last Wednesday.
(Tim Lister. Europeans fear being a footnote in history as Putin looks to strike deal with Trump. CNN. August 11, 2025.)

“We are at risk of being a footnote in history.”

Something related to but of lesser importance than a larger work or occurrence
(American Heritage Dictionary)

The jokesters’ custom has been around for hundreds of years, although its exact birth is difficult to pinpoint. These days, depending on your location, it could be marked with a fish secretly pinned to someone’s back or a whoopee cushion or even news reports of flying penguins (yes, that actually happened ).

In France, the day is known as poisson d’avril, or “April Fish,” and has long had a fish-themed pranking tradition. In modern times, it’s become more of a day for children to relish in attaching paper fish to their friends’ backs, Atlas Obscura says.
(How April Fools’ Day is celebrated around the world. New York Post. April 1, 2025.)

fish tale

People are getting catfished — literally.

Experts warn that when it comes to sushi, what you sea is often not what you get — with the US clocking in as one of the world’s biggest fish forgers.

Studies have shown that cheaper fish alternatives are being mislabeled and masqueraded as salmon, tuna, snapper and other top-shelf raw seafood — with the cost-cutting counterfeits almost impossible to spot after the sushi’s been sliced and served.
(Ben Cost. ‘Fake’ sushi is taking over and can make you sick, experts say — here’s how to tell real from bogus. New York Post. March 17, 2025.)

How do you spot a so-called fish tale?

Dr. Cusa advised, “In general, fish products that are sold in supermarket chains and that have thorough labels indicating the species, catch location and catching gear, are also good choices.”

“On the other hand, processed products, canned products with little information if any are, almost by definition, mislabeled,” she added.
(ibid.)

fling

The chance at rekindling this romance flamed out quickly.

A Florida Chipotle worker was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly used a tracking device from Best Buy to keep tabs on an ex-fling from years ago in hopes he could “run into” her, according to authorities.

The defendant fessed up to buying the tracker and installing it on his former flame’s car in front of her home “in an attempt to ‘run into’ the victim,” the affidavit states.
(David Propper. Florida Chipotle worker installed tracking device on ex-fling’s car in hopes he would ‘run into’ her: complaint. New York Post. January 16, 2025.)

ex-fling

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A brief, casual sexual or romantic relationship

The chance at rekindling this romance flamed out quickly.

funny bone

Linda Lavin, who tickled our funny bones and broke our hearts, is mourned by Broadway

Linda Lavin, who died Sunday at age 87, was a captivating Broadway star beloved by audiences for her electrifying contradictions.

A celebrated fixture of the New York stage for six decades, the Tony Award-winning actress was just 5-foot-3-inches tall yet towering; maternal and volcanic; glitteringly musical and groundedly real; hilarious and heartbreaking.

Her sardonic punch line could be followed by a shattering gut punch a second later.
(Johnny Oleksinski. Linda Lavin, who tickled our funny bones and broke our hearts, is mourned by Broadway. New York Post. December 30, 2024.)

tickled our funny bones...

folk hero

person who is greatly admired by many people of a particular kind or in a particular place
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

folk hero

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said in interviews this week that the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was wrong but also served as a "warning" of sorts that "you can only push people so far."

Mangione was arrested Monday after a manhunt and charged with Thompson's murder, which was committed outside a hotel in Manhattan last week. Mangione has become a folk hero to some far-left figures who feel Thompson's death is comeuppance for health insurance providers like UnitedHealthcare that deny coverage or charge exorbitant premiums.
(David Rutz. Elizabeth Warren says killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO was a warning: 'You can only push people so far'. Fox News. December 11, 2024.)
