イギリスのスターマー首相がいよいよ今週中にも辞任を表明すると報じられています。

以前から支持率低迷により内外の辞任圧力が高まっているということでしたが、直近の補欠選挙で労働党候補が破れたことを受けて進退極まったようです。

ガーディアン紙のオピニオン記事を読むと、スターマー首相辞任となると、イギリスの首相は10年で7人目ということになるようです。

かつて日本の首相もコロコロと変わってきましたが、10年で7人は笑えない現実です。英国民の嘆息が聞こえてきそうですが、引用部分で、

It is us who is the basket case.

というくだりがあります。ここで"basket case"とは、

全く無力（無効）な人（もの）

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味です。

"basket case"の"basket"（バスケット）からは編みかご、バスケットボールのゴールを思い浮かべますが、この表現は戦争で両手両足を失って自由がきかない状況にある人のこと（a person who is unable to provide for himself — Oxford Dictionary of Euphemisms）を言ったものだそうです。研究社新英和大辞典には「だるま」という日本語も見えます。

knock 〜 out for a loop

イランに対する停戦交渉の期限を再度延期しているトランプ大統領ですが、最新の情報ではその期限を米国東部時間4月7日午後8時に置いたと報じられています。それまでにホルムズ海峡封鎖解除を含む交渉内容に合意しなければ、一夜にしてイランという国が滅ぶ可能性があると発言したと報じられています。

In his jaw-dropping expletive-laden post on Easter Sunday, Trump demanded Iran agree to open the Strait of Hormuz or face “living in Hell.”

The president has given until Tuesday night for Iran to agree as the U.S. continues to carry out strikes.

トランプ大統領の発言が引用されていますが、その中に、

We can knock them out for a loop.

というくだりがあります。ここで使われているのは"knock (someone) (out) for a loop"という俗語表現です。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

Slang

To surprise tremendously; astonish.

と載っており、（相手を）ひどく驚かす、驚愕させる、というような意味となっています。一方、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のような3つの意味合いがあげられており、

overcome

demolish

dumbfound, amaze

驚愕させるという意味に加えて、叩きのめす、完全に破壊する（demolish）という意味があることがわかります。

よく分からないのは、"〜for a loop"とある部分の"loop"の解釈ではないでしょうか。

実のところ、当ブログで以前、

thrown for a loop

という表現を取り上げたことがあります。Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、throw 〜 for a loop、knock 〜 for a loopをひとまとめに載せており、その解説では意味するところはやはりびっくりさせるというものです。このフレーズには相手を驚愕させる出来事が唐突であるが故にに、それが非常に衝撃的である、また相手を困惑させる程であるという意味合いがあるようです。

そうしてみると、"loop"の解釈としては"loopy"という表現に見られる阿呆、頭がおかしい、という意味合いに関連しているように思われます。すなわち、出来事のショックが相手を呆けさせるくらいに強烈であることを言っていると解釈できるかと。

徹底的に破壊するという意味合いに関しても同様で、やられた方が呆気にとられるくらいにこてんぱんにするというある種の誇張表現にも思われます。

rock-for-brains

盗品をネットで売ろうとした男が逮捕されたというニュースです。盗品だとすぐ分かるようなものを売ろうとすれば足がつくのは分かりきったことだとすれば、そのアホさ加減が分かるというものです。

引用記事の冒頭、

rock-for-brains

という表現を取り上げます。辞書には載っていないようです。記事のタイトルには、

rock-headed

ともあります。恐らく同じ意味合いだと思われます。

英和辞典には、

have rocks in one's head

というフレーズが載っていて、「頭がどうかしている、ばかだ」という意味の米俗語表現だとあります。

"rock-for-brains"に関しては、脳ミソの代わりに石コロ（rocks）が詰まっている、ということだと思います。

日本語で石頭（いしあたま）というと頑固で融通のきかない人のことを指しますが、英語では頭の中に石が詰まっているのは愚鈍だということです。

skeezy

先週金曜日の投稿で、トランプ大統領にカタールから贈られるという4億ドルもするジェット機の是非を巡って議論百出という話題を取り上げました。

以下引用する記事も同じ話題なのですが、お読みください。

今回の件はトランプ氏の身内からも疑問視する声が少なくないと報じられていますが、保守派のひとりはこの件を、

skeezy

と表現したとあります。

"skeezy"とは見慣れない単語ですが、

汚らしくて［みすぼらしくて］嫌な

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味だそうです。

ちょっと変わったスペルだと思いますが、1950〜1970年代の俗語のようです。

忌み嫌うという意味のイタリア語schifareから来ているとされます。

また、辞書の定義には、同義語に"sleazy"という単語も見えます。

アメリカ人というのは性に対しては奔放でしょうか。少なくとも日本人よりは、とは思いますが・・・。

しかし、

a first roll in the hay for men often happens between the ages of 18 and 20

というくだりに関して言えば、最近の日本の若い人はもっと早くに初体験を迎えると聞きますので、アメリカと言えど、意外と保守的（?!）なのかな、と思います。

説明が前後してしまいましたが、

roll in the hay

というのは、アメリカ英語の俗語表現で、性行為（セックス）を意味するものです。

"hay"は干し草のことです。以前取り上げましたが、"hit the hay"は「寝る」という意味になります。

can

2019年、イギリスのチャーチル首相の生家で、世界遺産にも登録されているブレナム宮殿から18金（!!）のトイレを盗んだ犯人の公判が行われたそうです。

トイレが18金とはなんという成金趣味かと思いますが、芸術作品として製作されたものらしいです。

その価値、350万ドルとも言われる黄金の便座2019年9月14日未明に忽然と持ち去られたそうです。

さて、引用した記事に、

and now they could be headed to the can

というくだりがあります。

ここで使われている"can"は名詞ですが、アメリカ英語の俗語表現で刑務所の意味があります。日本語でいう「豚箱」というほどの意味合いかと思います。

また、"can"には同じく俗語表現で、トイレの意味もありますので、ここはシャレを効かせた単語のチョイスだと思われます。

缶（"can"）がこれらの意味に用いられるのはどういう背景があるのでしょうか？

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemisms (1996) によりますと、「豚箱」の意味は独房の狭いスペースを意味することから、また、トイレの意味はかつて使用の度に中身を捨てる必要があったブリキのバケツから来ているとか。

今日の1語は、"shill"です。

引用した記事の内容は、アメリカ議会で民主党、共和党の対立が起きているというものです。

互いを批判している訳ですが、後半部分では民主党議員が共和党のジョンソン議員を、

he’s a total shill for Donald Trump and Elon Musk

と罵ったとあります。

この"shill"という単語を知らなかったので辞書を引くと、

さくら、おとり、ちょうちん持ち

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

とありました。

「ちょうちん持ち」とは面白い日本語です。久しぶりに広辞苑を引きました。暗い夜道を照らすため、ちょうちんを持って先導する人のことを指すのですが、それが転じて、「他人の手先に使われ、また頼まれもしないのに（！）他人のためにその長所などを吹聴する」（広辞苑第三版）人を蔑んで言う表現になりました。

つまり、民主党議員はジョンソン議員をトランプ大統領やマスク氏に使われるだけの手先だと罵った訳です。

"shill"の語源はよく分かっていないそうですが、"shillaber"という単語が約まったものらしいです。この"shillaber"は人の名前（苗字）でもあるそうですが、ちょうちん持ちのShillaberさんという人がかつていた、という訳でもないようです。

元々の意味はギャンブルなどで賭け金を出させ釣り上げるために、さも勝っているように見せかけてカモを集める囮役、「さくら」を指すものだったそうです。

歳をとってトイレが近くなった・・・、誰しもがこっそりと抱える悩みではないでしょうか？

夜中にトイレのために何度も目が覚めてしまう（新聞の広告みたいですが！？）、という悩みに対し、何回までならOKなのか、という話題です。

結論から言うと、55歳というのがひとつの節目のようですが、若い人なら睡眠中にトイレのために起きるというのは概して無く、55歳以上では目が覚めるのは1度くらいなら普通だそうです。

さて、今日の1語（表現）です。

記事に、

spilling the pee — that is, tea

というくだりがありますね。

ここで"pee"という単語を使っているのは、話題にかけたシャレで、本来は、

spill the tea

という表現です。で、この"spill the tea"というフレーズですが、秘密を漏らす、ばらす、とか、ゴシップ、噂話をする、といった意味合いのアメリカ英語の俗語表現です。

字句通りに訳すならば、お茶をこぼす、となりますが、それが秘密を明らかにするというような意味になるのはどういう訳でしょうか。

"spill the tea"というフレーズからは、同じような意味を持つ"spill the beans"というフレーズを思い出しますが、"spill the tea"の"tea"はそもそもお茶（tea）のことではないそうです。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）によれば、"tea"はアルファベットのTが変化したもので、そのTというのは"truth"を指す、変装趣味者の隠語だったとの解説が見られます。

つまり、"spill the tea"とは真実（T; truth）を明るみにするという意味で、そのTとはいささか後ろ暗いものであることから、あまり積極的には公にしたくない秘密やゴシップ、噂話といったものをばらすという意味で使われるようになったものと考えられます。

screwball

スクリューボールというのは野球のピッチングで、回転しながら落ちる球のことです。

わたしは野球のことには疎いので、どんな風に球を握って、またどのような捻りをかけたりすればそうなるのか分からないので説明も出来ませんが、スクリューボールというのが変化球の一種で、打者にとっては厄介なものであろうことは想像が付きます。

というようなスクリューボールですが、アメリカ英語で"screwball"は、

常軌を逸した奇人、変人

のことを指す表現です。

何十万ドルもする高価なロールスロイスを盗んでレストランに突っ込んだ挙句に大破させた窃盗犯はどこかイカれているには違いありません。

このストーリーで"screwball"という表現を使ったのは、大破したクルマが辿ったであろう蛇行の軌跡も形容したもののようにも思われます。

weak sauce

昨日の話題に引き続きですが、大統領選候補のハリス副大統領は記者会見から逃げているという批判を受けてか、CNNの独占インタビューに臨むこととなりました。

ただし、その場に副大統領候補のWalz氏が同席するという事で、これがまた不評を買っているようです。

Vice President Kamala Harris is taking blowback for opting to bring her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, to her first formal interview since President Biden dropped his re-election bid last month — with one critic on the very network that will show the coveted sit-down calling it a “weak sauce” move that shows a “lack of confidence.”

Harris, 59, is slated to appear alongside her No. 2 for the “joint interview” that will air on CNN at 9 p.m. Thursday.

Republican and conservative commentators said the Californian was using Walz as a crutch in the face of expected questions scrutinizing her record while sitting a heartbeat from the presidency.

単独インタビューではなく、Walz氏同席というところに、弱腰だというような批判があるようです。

記事では、

weak sauce

と引用符付きで書かれていますが、見慣れない表現ですね？

英和辞典には載っていないようなのですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、アメリカ英語の俗語表現ということで、

something inferior, ineffective, or unimpressive : something weak

と定義しています。

"weak sauce"の"weak"からは想像のつく意味合いですね。この他、残念な、とか、ガッカリするような、期待外れ、という意味合いで用いられるようです。

ところで、"weak sauce"の"sauce"は何のことなんでしょう？

ネットを検索してみますが明確な説明は見当たらず、諸説（?!）あるらしいことが分かります。

ひとつには"weak sauce"の"sauce"とはホッケー競技から来ているというもので、"sauce shot"のことだというものです。

そこで"sauce shot"なる用語を検索してみるのですが、恐らくは同じことを指しているであろう、"sauce pass"という定義には、

Saucer Pass – A pass in which the puck is passed to another player such that it flies in the air like a flying saucer. This makes the pass very difficult to intercept by opposing players but it will still land flat on the ice making it simple to control for the receiving player.

とあります。

ホッケーのゲームにおいて強力な攻撃と期待されるショットが"weak"だと勝てませんし、それが期待外れ、残念、という意味になるのは、なるほどという気もしますね。

もうひとつの説としては、"sauce"とはアルコールのことというものですが、以前取り上げたこともあるように確かに"sauce"にはお酒の意味があります。

"weak sauce"とはお酒をちょっと飲んだだけで酔っ払ってしまう人、つまりお酒に弱い人を指すというのがこの表現な由来だというのですが・・・。お酒に弱い人、すなわち残念な、期待に沿わない、というの甚だ呑兵衛目線の表現のように思えますが、ちょっと飛躍してますかね。

lawyer up

イタリアのシチリア島の沖合でヨットが転覆した事故で、行方不明になっていた乗員の遺体が回収されたそうです。

ヨットはイギリスの実業家が所有するもので、幼児を含む20人以上が乗船していたようですが、突然の竜巻に巻き込まれて転覆。15名は救助されましたが、6名が行方不明、ダイバーによる捜索が続いていました。

今朝見た報道によれば、このうち5名の遺体が回収されたとあります。

救助された人も、不幸にして亡くなった人も、とんだ災難というところでしょうか。

事故処理が一段落したら賠償の話に移りますが、ヨットの所有者と船長の責任が問われるのは必至です。

引用した記事のくだりで、

the operator and owner… should lawyer up …

という部分があります。

ここで"lawyer"という単語が使われていますが、すぐに意味を掴めないでいました。that節の文になっていたり、主語となる部分の後に色々修飾語句があったりして少し複雑なのもあるのですが、"should"という助動詞に続いて使われていますので、ここでの"lawyer"は名詞ではなく動詞で使われているということに気付くのに少しかかりました。

"lawyer"という単語に動詞の意味があるのか？と引っかかったのです。"lawyer"は弁護士という名詞だというのがまずは頭にありますよね。

手元の辞書を引くのですが、"lawyer"のエントリで動詞の意味を載せているものはありませんでした。ネットを検索すると、"lawyer up"で、

弁護士を立てる、選任する

という意味で使われると分かりました。

アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな言い回しのようです。

it sucks

ニューヨーク市内の公園で子どもの性犯罪被害が発生、容疑者がまだ捕まっていないということのようです。

公園を利用する関係者の当惑、子供を持つ親の心配は尽きるところがありません。

インタビューされた父親のコメントの中に、

it sucks

という表現が度々出て来ます。

これはアメリカ英語の俗語表現で、

不快だ

というような意味です。

ここでのitは性犯罪者がのさばっている状況を言っている訳ですが、口語表現としては話題となっていることや状況などを漠然と指して、それが発話者の意に沿わないものである（disagreeable）ことを意味します。

和訳としては色々なバリエーションがあり得るのですが、

最悪だ、最低だ、不愉快だ、がっかりだ、ひどい話だ

などあり得るでしょう。

cold hard cash

イースターの平和な日曜日に、ロサンゼルスのセキュリティ会社の金庫から3,000万ドルという巨額のお金が盗まれるという事件が発生しました。

犯人らは厳重なセキュリティをかいくぐり、警報を作動させることすらなく巨額の現金を持ち去ったとみられ、映画「オーシャンズイレブン」を地で行くような話だと各メディアで報じられています。

The wild $30 million cash heist from a Los Angeles warehouse Easter Sunday was apparently pulled off by a top-notch group of criminals – and so clean that it could go unsolved, an expert says.

The polished criminals snuck into the site through its roof and accessed a safe without setting off any alarms, authorities said.

今回の事件は銀行強盗ではありませんが、現金の強奪や盗みというのは現代では割に合わない犯罪と言われます。それは捕まる確率が高いということもありますが、振り込め詐欺やオンライン詐欺、仮想通貨の詐欺など、現金を扱わない犯罪の方が効率が良く、またリスクも少ないと考えられています。

今回は100ドル紙幣にして660ポンド（約300キロ）という現金を物理的に盗み、持ち去ったということですから、話題になるのも当然でしょうか。

記事では、

cold hard cash

という表現が使われています。これはアメリカ英語の俗語表現で、現金という意味です。

"cold cash"、また"hard cash"とも言います。

キャッシュ自体、現金という意味ですが、何故、"cold"、あるいは"hard"なのでしょう？

"cash"には小切手や手形による支払いも含むところ、"cold"、あるいは"hard"は物理的なお金そのもの、つまり紙幣、硬貨、すなわちすぐに使える（換金や手続きの必要が無いもの）に特定するという意味があるようです。

clap-back

一昨日の投稿で、Wendy’sが混雑時間帯の価格を上げる"surge pricing"を導入予定という記事を取り上げましたが、これに対し、競合するハンバーガーチェーンのBurger Kingが早速反応したようです。

Burger Kingは、お腹を空かせているお客さんに追加料金を払わせるなんて考えられない、とSNSに投稿し、Wendy’sの"surge pricing"導入を暗に非難、さらにはハンバーガーの無償提供（一定額購入客が対象）を行うとも発表しました。

Burger King is giving out free burgers for a limited time in a not-so-subtle clap-back at Wendy’s.

“We don’t believe in charging guests more when they’re hungry,” Burger King wrote in a press release announcing the Whopper freebie.

記事中、

clap-back

という表現が使われているのですが、初めて見ました。英和辞書にエントリが見当たりませんが、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな表現ということで、

US, informal

: a quick, sharp, and effective response to criticism

と定義されています。

日本語にすると、非難に対する応酬、しっぺ返し、といったところでしょうか。

今回の件で言えば、Burger Kingは非難された訳ではなく、Wendy’sの値上げ構想とそれに対する顧客の反応（その多くがWendy’sに批判的であることは言うまでもありません）を好機と見て自社ブランドの認知向上の一手を打ったというところです。この一手は当意即妙と言って良いでしょう。

"clap"は手を叩く、強く打つ、という意味ですが、Burger KingのSNS投稿、つまり"clap-back"を受けて、Wendy’sはそもそも価格吊り上げの意図は無かったとの苦しい釈明に追われているようです。

ガイダンスでは、人種、性的マイノリティ、障害者などに対して差別的に響く用語、表現の具体例が取り上げられ、同大学内での使用を禁じると共に、適切な言い換えが示されているそうです。

Stanford University published an index of "harmful language" it plans to eliminate from the school’s websites and computer code, offering terms to be used as replacements.

The Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative, which was revealed in May, is a "multi-phase, multi-year project to address harmful language in IT at Stanford," according to the guide.

The guide says its goal is to eliminate "many forms of harmful language," including "racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language" in Stanford websites and code. It added that it strives to educate people on the impact of words.

例えば、アメリカ合衆国民を指すのに"American"というのはNGで、"US citizens"が正しい、といったものだそうです。

その他の例も挙げられているのですが、その中で、"Karen"はNG、というのに目が留まりました。

言うまでもなく"Karen"は女性名で、"Catherine"というファーストネームの愛称ですが、これが白人女性を揶揄するのに使われるとは知りませんでした。

どうやら、"Karen"は中流階級の女性で、自身の権利や要求事項を声高に主張する白人女性の典型（！？）として、一般名詞化した俗語表現のようです。

2年前の記事ですが、そのような意味合いで使われている"Karen"を取り上げているものがありました。

Earlier this week Domino's Pizza had to issue an apology over a promotion it ran in Australia and New Zealand, offering free pizza to "nice Karens".

The company didn't pick out the name Karen at random. "Karen" has, in recent years, become a widespread meme referencing a specific type of middle-class white woman, who exhibits behaviours that stem from privilege.

To give some examples, "Karen" is associated with the kind of person who demands to "speak to the manager" in order to belittle service industry workers, is anti-vaccination, and carries out racist micro-aggressions, such as asking to touch black people's hair.

このような"Karen"の意味合いがどのような経緯で生まれたかについては、テレビドラマや映画、SNSなどが関係しているとされ、やはりと思わされます。

ところで、同じロジックで行くと、"lazy Susan"や"plain Jane"、"Negative Nancy"も言い換えが必要のように思いますがどうなんでしょう!?

deck

米民主党の下院議員、アレクサンドリア・オカシオ・コルテス氏はニュース記事タイトルではAOCと略されて何かと話題になる女性議員ですが、ワシントンD.C.にある議事堂の外で写真撮影をしていたところ、見ず知らずの男性に卑猥な言葉を掛けられて立腹しました。

当然ながら、相手へ抗議するというのは想像がつくところですが、

“to deck”

という表現が使われており、引用符付きであることから特別な意味がありそうです。

手元の英和辞書を引いてみたところ、アメリカ英語の俗語表現で、

打ち倒す

という意味だそうです。

「デッキ」（“deck”）というのはご存知のように船の甲板のことです。相手を殴って甲板の上に倒す、というイメージから来ています。

これは、動詞の“floor”が相手を地面に這わせる、すなわち負かすという意味や、モノを床に押し付ける、という意味を持つのと同じです。

オカシオ・コルテス議員の腕力のほどは知りませんが、SPに留められてその場は収まったそうです。

rap sheet

先週でしたが、ボクシングヘビー級元チャンピオンのマイク・タイソンに飛行機内で殴られた男性がいるというニュースの記事を読みました。

例によって、同乗していた別の客が撮影したという動画がSNSにアップロードされており、記事でも引用されているのを見ました。

殴られてしまったのは男性に非があるようでしたが、ボクサーが素人を殴るというのは凶器でもって暴行するのに等しいと昔聞いたことがあります。

男性はタイソン氏を訴えているそうですが、その後の報道によりますと、どうやら男性自身曰く付きの経歴の持ち主らしいと言われており、タイソン氏はむしろ被害者というような扱いです。

男性について、記事のタイトルで、

とあります。

"rap sheet"という表現を知りませんでしたが、本文を読むと"criminal convictions going back to 2008"を指しており、"criminal record"（犯罪歴）の意であろうことは想像がつきます。

果たして、英和辞書には、"rap sheet"は米俗語で警察記録のことであると載っていました。

この"rap"というのは、叩く、という意味の動詞ですが、叱る、非難する、という意味もあり、また俗語表現としては逮捕するという意味もあるそうです。

Merriam-Websterオンラインに拠れば、このような"rap"の意味は18世紀に遡る古いものだそうで、名詞としても犯罪の容疑とか刑罰という意味で用いられるようになりました。

"bad rap"というと、「曰く付きの」、つまり評判が悪い、という意味です。

米国FDA（医薬食品局）がアナルセックス用のコンドームを認可したそうです。コンドームは性交渉に伴う感染症の予防に効果があるとされますが、アナルセックス用としての認可は前例がなく、史上初だということです。

ところで、今日取り上げる単語自体は特に18禁でもないと思うのですが、"patootie"という見慣れない、ちょっと変わったスペルの単語です。

記事中、"patootie prophylactics"と出てきますが、"patootie"というのは"potato"が訛った（？）ものだそうで、アメリカ英語の俗語では尻を指し、また"sweet patootie"というと、若い魅力的な女性という意味だそうです。

アメリカ人には尻がジャガイモに見えるのでしょうか。

記事の話題に戻りますと、いかがわしく、またいささか不謹慎にも思われる新商品ではありますが、大真面目であることは、FDAの認可がちゃんとした臨床試験の結果に基づいているということからわかります。

臨床試験では、同性間性交をする男性のグループと、異性間性交をする男性のグループに分けられ、各グループ252名がコンドームを着用して耐久性を比較した結果、同性間性交グループにおけるコンドームの故障率が異性間性交の場合に比べて低いことが確認されたそうです。

このことが認可する上でどのような意味を持つのかよく分からないでいますが、既存製品は異性間性交を想定して製造されており、アナルセックスでの使用では故障率が高いという問題があったそうですが、そこをクリアした初めての製品という位置付けのようです。

sock away

アメリカの国内経済がかつてないインフレに見舞われています。

食料品、ガソリンなどの物価高が主に取り上げられていますが、小売大手のウォルマートやターゲットはインフレを消費者に転嫁しないで、価格据え置きの姿勢を示していると報道されています。

これに投資家サイドは反発、両者の株価は3～5%下落したそうです。

これからのシーズン、感謝祭（Thanksgiving）にクリスマス、年末年始と、消費欲を刺激するイベントが目白押しです。そこに加えて、パンデミックで行動が制限されていた時期に使われなかったお金があるわけで、多少の値上げでも顧客離れにはならないだろうというのが投資家側の見立て、と要約できそうです。

ここで、

sock away

という表現が出てきました。

"sock"という動詞は叩くとか強く打つ、という意味ですが、"sock away"の"sock"は靴下のことです。（詳細がはっきりしませんが、これら2つの"sock"は語源が異なる単語のようです。）

"sock away"の意味するところは、お金を貯め込む、というものなのですが、アメリカ英語のインフォーマルな表現となっています。

昔、へそくりを靴下に隠したことに因むそうです。

米・ニューヨークで自動車の強奪（carjacking）が相次いでおり、事件数が急増しているそうです。怖いですね。

今日取り上げる表現ですが、

put the pedal to the metal

という表現です。

なんだかよく分からない表現ですね。

アメリカ英語の俗語表現らしいのですが、

（車の）アクセルを目一杯にふかす、（車を）全速力でぶっとばす

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

と載っていました。

"pedal"はアクセルペダルのことであるのは間違いないと思われます。では"metal"とは？

私は、put "the metal" to "the pedal"ではないかと思いました。つまり、金属（製の重い物を）アクセルペダルに載せる、それがアクセルを踏み込むことになる、と思ったのです。その発想は、以前取り上げた"lead-footed"が頭にあったからです。

ところが、語順と解釈はどうしても「ペダルをメタルに置く」ということのようなのです。

このフレーズの由来についてネット検索してみると、どうやら"the metal"とは自動車の床部分（floor）のことを指すらしいということが分かりました。

つまり、アクセルペダルを床につくほど踏み込む、ということです。

このフレーズはアクセルを踏み込んで全速力で移動することを意味していますが、その後自動車に限らず、物事に対して全力で当たる、迅速に取り組む、ことを広く指すのに用いられるようになりました。

"Carjacking"に全力で、あるいは迅速に取り組む（！？）というのはおかしな表現ですが、自動車の強奪が急増しているのは明らかであり、組織的なものか否かは分からないところですが、事件数が加増している状況を、自動車に因むこの表現を使って言い表したものでしょう。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary Onlineでは、この表現の由来が1970年代のカントリーミュージックの歌詞だとしています。
