昨日の投稿ではAIが人間を超えて自律的に働くことで抑制が効かなくなるというリスクが現実のものとして議論されているという話題を取り上げました。

今日も同じ話題で恐縮ですが、議論はアメリカのみならず世界各国で行われているようで、以下に引用するのはイギリスでの話です。

イギリスの国会ではAIに"kill switch"を導入すべきとの議論が行われたそうで、この"kill switch"という言葉がトレンドのようになっています。

The UK government has rejected the idea of creating a so-called "kill switch" to stop a dangerous attack from rogue AI.

The proposal to create a legal mechanism for the UK to switch off an AI model in an emergency has been brought to Parliament by lords and MPs in recent weeks as fears grow about the threat the tech poses.

But the Cabinet Office - the part of government which leads on AI safety - said the UK "cannot simply turn AI off".

"kill switch"はカタカナでも「キルスイッチ」として使われていますが、強制停止装置などと訳され、非常時に機械やシステムなどを停止させる仕組みのことを言い、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

a mechanism or feature on a mechanical or electronic device that allows one or more functions to be turned off or made unavailable

と定義されています。

さて、イギリスではAIに"kill switch"を義務化するという法案が議会に提案されましたが、否決されたとあります。

理由はイギリスだけで出来るものでは無い、ということのようですが、国境の無いインターネット環境において、ある国だけが"kill switch"を設けたとしても、それが果たして機能するのか分からないということのようです。

トランプ米大統領はAI開発を抑制することは愚行であり、ロシアによる"hoax"だとし、そんなことをすれば喜ぶのは中国だとまで言っています。

kitchen table issue

昨日はアメリカでのデータセンター建設事情の記事を取り上げましたが、今日も同じ話題で別記事からの引用です。

AI（人工知能）需要の高まりに伴ってデータセンターの建設が全米で相次いでいるということですが、建設地となる地域の住民には評判が悪い、という話です。以下、引用をどうぞ。

アメリカではデータセンター建設是非は自治体議員の選挙の争点ともなっているそうです。データセンター建設による地域への影響が、

kitchen table issue

となっていることを反映したものだといいます。

この"kitchen table issue"という表現を取り上げます。

"kitchen"（キッチン）は台所と解釈するのが適当でしょうか。もしくは、"kitchen table"とは家族が食事をする場所と捉えることもできます。

家族が食事をする際に話題に上るような問題、モノやサービスの値段（が上がった）とか質（が下がった）とか、そういった日常的、卑近な話題を指すということだと思われます。

"kitchen table issue"という表現はよく使われるようで、コーパスからいくつか用例を拾ってみました。

"kitchen table politics"（dinner-table politics）という言葉もあるようです。以下の引用では、この表現を解説したもので、参考になります。

Kegel

今日の話題は一応、成人向けの内容となります。悪しからず。

いわゆる男性機能の話しになるのですが、肝心の時に機能しない（?!）という場合に備えて骨盤トレーニングが有効だという話がネットで広まっているそうです。

On TikTok, a pelvic floor exercise long popular with women is being repackaged as a fix for erectile dysfunction (ED) in young men, with influencers promising stronger, longer-lasting results between the sheets.

骨盤トレーニングという言葉を聞かれたことがあるかも知れません。記事中は"pelvic floor exercise"と出て来ます。出産を経験した女性などが尿漏れなどになりやすいところ、この骨盤トレーニングが有効とされます。

記事ではもう一つ、"Kegel(s)"という言葉も出て来ますがこれも骨盤トレーニングを指す用語です。"Kegel"は骨盤トレーニングの始祖である産科医Arnold H. Kegel (1894-1941) に因みます。

ところで"Kegel"が男性機能の維持や回復に本当に有用なのか？については記事においては、注意が必要とあります。"Kegel"は排尿などをコントロールする括約筋を鍛えますが、男性機能の問題に関しては括約筋が緊張していることが機能低下の原因にあるそうで、エクササイズは状況をより悪くする可能性があるとのことです。

K-shaped economy

ニューヨーク市長選が行われ、民主社会主義を標榜するイスラム教徒のゾーラン・マムダニ氏が当選を確実にしたと報じられています。

マムダニ氏は今回選挙戦を億万長者との戦いと銘打ち、住居家賃の据え置きを始め、市内バスの無償化などの政策を打ち出しています。つまり、庶民の懐に優しい政策を推進するということです。

マムダニ氏勝利の背景にはインフレ、物価高に喘ぐ市民の声があると言えます。

選挙の話題とはまた別ですが、最近の米国内経済の状況を表す言葉に、

K-shaped economy

というものがあるようです。

アルファベットのKの形からイメージされる経済状況とは、上向きの斜線は富裕層を、下向きの斜線は庶民、貧困層を表しているというもので、富める者は益々富み、貧しい者は益々・・・、ということです。

さしずめ、Kの縦棒は収入や資産を表すグラフの縦軸といったところでしょうか。

今日取り上げる1語、"kerflooey"という単語を見たことがあるという方はいらっしゃいますでしょうか？

私は初めて見ました。

記事の引用をどうぞ。

ニューヨーク市地下鉄に関する内容です。

老朽化が進むインフラ、設備等が問題になっているものですが、メンテナンスや修繕にかかる費用を誰が負担するのかという話です。運賃の値上げが計画されているようですが、それだけで賄えるはずもなく、地下鉄を運営するMTAはニューヨーク市の援助を求めている模様です。

引用した部分の最後の段落で、

The subways infamously went kerflooey 

と出てきます。

"kerflooey"という単語を載せている辞書はそう多くないようです。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、"kerflooey"を載せています。

記事のコンテクストから意味合いは想像が付くというものです。老朽化した設備につきものは不具合や故障であり、列車は遅延したり、運休により大混雑を引き起こします。"kerflooey"がこうした望ましくない状況を指す意味合いだというのは想像がつきます。（この箇所、過去形になっていますが、2017年夏に起きた地下鉄の大混乱の記事を当ブログでも取り上げていました。）

"kerflooey"は形容詞で、上記の用例においても"go kerflooey"となっています。ランダムハウス英和辞書では、

（突然）止まる、調子が狂う

とあります。

"flooey"という俗語にそもそも機械の不具合、故障というような意味合いがあり、ker-というのは擬音語や擬態語に付けられる接頭辞で、効果や程度を強調するような働きをするものだそうです。

つまり、単に「壊れた」というのではなく、「ぶっ壊れた」という時の「ぶっ」に相当するというものです。

似たスペルの単語に、"kerfuffle"があります。元はcurfuffleというスペルのスコットランド方言でしたが、接頭辞ker-の影響を受けたとの説明がランダムハウス英和辞書にあります。

klepto

記事の引用からどうぞ。

記事に出てくる、"klepto"という単語をご存知でしょうか？

窃盗狂を指します。ちょっと変わったスペルですが、盗むという意味のギリシャ語動詞klepteinから来ています。

辞書を引くと、"klepto"は"kleptomania"（窃盗強迫症患者）の短縮形という説明があります。

"kleptomania"とは経済的困難といった理由でやむを得ず盗みを働くというのではなく、物を盗むという行為自体に快感を覚えるような性癖を持つ人を指します。

kidult

"kidult"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

スペルから想像が付くと思いますが、kid（こども）とadult（オトナ）を組み合わせた、いわゆるかばn語です。

子供じみた大人、子供のような大人、という意味で、子供が欲しがるようなおもちゃを好む大人が当てはまります。

Wendy's has options for kids and kids-at-heart ("kidults") this Halloween season.

個人的にはハロウィンのお菓子もトイザラスで売られているおもちゃにも興味はないのですが、子供の頃手にして遊んだおもちゃは心に残っていて、懐かしく感じることは多々あります。小生の世代だと、レゴブロックとかウルトラマンのビニール人形とか、プラモデルなんかですね。

text neck, tech neck, or kyphosis

どうも最近肩が凝るというか、首周りの倦怠感がしつこく、これはいわゆる五十肩というやつなのか、などと思っていました。

これまで肩凝りというものを実感したことはほとんど無く、四十肩も経験ありませんが、アラフィフと呼ばれる年代となって以降、色々な衰えを感じています。

薄々感じてはいたのですが、この不快感にはやはりパソコンやスマホの影響があるのだと確信するに至りました。・・・。

パソコンやスマホの画面を注視しているとどうしても顔面はスクリーンに対して前傾し、首の後ろが引っ張られる格好となります。これが記事で指摘されている、

text neck

と呼ばれる状況です。このような表現があることを知りませんでした。"tech neck"とも言うそうです。

From looking down at your phone every few minutes to working on a laptop to slouching on the couch for hours, everyday life is rife with moments of poor posture. One of the most pronounced these days is kyphosis, also known as “text neck” or “tech neck.”

という医学専門用語も出て来ます。曲がったという意味のギリシャ語kyphosに由来し、後弯症と訳されますが、意味はいわゆる「猫背」のことです。

knock off

オーストラリアでこのほど、労働者、従業員が就業時間外の電話やメールに対応しなくてもよいとする法律が制定されました。

いわゆる、"right to disconnect"、というものです。

Australia gave millions of workers the legal right to "disconnect" on Monday, allowing them to ignore unreasonable out-of-hours calls, emails and texts from their bosses.

People can now refuse to monitor, read, or respond to their employers' attempts to contact them outside work hours -- unless that refusal is deemed "unreasonable".

Unions welcomed the legislation, saying it gave workers a way to reclaim some work-life balance.

"Today is a historic day for working people," said Michele O'Neil, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

"Australian unions have reclaimed the right to knock off after work," she said.

right to knock off after work

とも書かれています。ここで使われている、"knock off"という動詞句ですが、

（仕事、活動などを）やめる、中止する

という意味の口語表現です。

"knock off"にはこの他にも色々な意味があるようなのですがそのひとつに、盗用するという意味もあります。

kamikaze

ロシアとウクライナの戦争において、このところウクライナの反転攻勢の記事を見かけます。

以下に引用する記事は、ウクライナ軍が敵地攻撃用に「ロボット犬」を導入したという話題です。

Ukraine is siccing a fleet of robot dogs on Russian troops, including some four-legged terminators it hopes to use to conduct “kamikaze” attacks on enemy soldiers and vehicles along the frontlines, officials said.

記事に出て来る、

kamikaze

という日本語にお気づきでしょうか。

言うまでもなく、第二次世界大戦において日本軍がアメリカ艦隊へ決死の攻撃のために編成した神風特攻隊から取られた表現です。

英語になった日本語として、"kamikaze"はほとんどの辞書に載っています。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryにおいては、名詞として、

an airplane containing explosives to be flown in a suicide crash on a target

と定義されています。

また、上記の引用では本文中では形容詞としての意味でも使われていますが、

having or showing reckless disregard for safety or personal welfare

という定義も与えられています。

Knesset

イスラエルのネタニヤフ首相は、アラビア語テレビ放送局アルジャジーラの同国内における放送を禁止すると発表しました。

以下に引用する記事で、

Knesset

という単語が出てきますが、これはイスラエル国会を指す語です。英和辞典にも載っていますが、ヘブライ語knesetから来ています。

ヘブライ語knesetは議会（assembly, gathering）を指す言葉だそうです。

イスラエル国会では、アルジャジーラがハマス寄りであり、イスラエル国家に危険をもたらしているとして、賛成多数で放送許可を取り消す議案を可決したそうです。

kill notice

英王室が報道機関にリリースした写真に改竄の疑いがあるとして、APやロイターを始めとする報道各社は写真の配信を取り消しすると発表しました。

写真はイギリスのMother‘s Dayに合わせて、キャサリン妃を囲む3人のお子様を写した微笑ましいものですが、英王室から公式にリリースされた写真に改竄の疑惑が持たれ、そして報道機関によって取り消されるというのは極めて異例ではないでしょうか。

キャサリン妃は昨年末より動静が不明であったところ、今年1月に腹部の外科手術を公表という経緯があり、SNSを始めとしてネット上であらぬ噂などを呼んでいました。

The Associated Press and other news agencies issued mandatory kill notices Sunday on the first photo released in months of Kate, the Princess of Wales, citing concerns that the photo was manipulated.

写真の「配信取り下げ」について引用記事を含め、各メディアでは、

retract

withdraw

といった表現を使っているのですが、APやロイターによる配信取り消しの公式発表は、

photo kill

picture kill

mandatory kill

となっており、これらは"kill notice(s)"と呼ばれています。

"kill"（殺す）とは随分と物騒な言い方ですが、動詞の"kill"には、

（記事、文章などを）没にする、削る

という意味があるんですね。これは知りませんでした。

問題となった写真をメディアがリリースした直後から、ネット上では不自然な箇所が複数指摘され、合成したのでは無いかという疑惑を生み、却ってキャサリン妃と王室に対する憶測を掻き立てるような結果になったようです。

キャサリン妃は自身がPhotoshopを使って写真を編集したことを認めましたが、どのような編集を行ったのか、またそれが何のためだったのかは分かっていません。

言われてみれば確かに不自然と思われる箇所はあるのですが・・・。

写真に詳しくない小生にはよく分からないというのが正直な感想ですが、報道各社が今回出した"kill notices"という表現は学びでした。

kibbutz

イーロン・マスク氏がイスラエルを訪問、ネタニヤフ大統領と面会したと報じられています。

ハマスの攻撃により破壊され、多数の犠牲者を出した現場を訪れた同氏はネタニヤフ大統領に対して、ハマスは壊滅されなければならないと同調したそうです。

Elon Musk visited Israel Monday, meeting the country’s leaders and walking through a kibbutz destroyed by Hamas last month as he tried to calm outrage caused by his endorsement of an antisemitic post on his social media platform, X.

Musk was taken to Kfar Azza — one of the kibbutzim attacked on October 7 — by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The kibbutz was the home of Abigail Edan, a four-year-old American dual citizen abducted by the militant group that day and released Sunday.

何故、マスク氏がイスラエルを訪問するのか、と訝る向きもあろうかと思います。

今回の背景にはSNSのX（旧Twitter）上で反ユダヤ主義の投稿が野放しにされているとの批判が高まっていることと関連があります。マスク氏は先日、そうした反ユダヤ主義に同調する投稿を自ら行い、その結果、大手メディアがXへの広告出稿を見合わせるという事態に発展していました。

マスク氏はメディアの対応に反発していましたが、Xの広告収入に影響が出ることを懸念したのでしょう、今回のイスラエル訪問につながったとの見方があります。計算高いとうか、姑息というか。

さて、引用した記事で、

kibbutz

という単語が出てきます。

見慣れないこの単語は元はヘブライ語であり、辞書を引くと、イスラエルの農業共同体、という説明があります。カタカナでそのまま「キブツ」とも訳されるようですが、NHKのニュースでは「集落」と訳していました。

引用した部分にも出てきますが、その複数形は、

kibbutzim

です。

タイトル、それから本文に、

keying a car

という部分がありますが、ここでの"key"の意味が最初分かりませんでした。

キー、つまり鍵を意味する"key"に違いありません。続く部分に、

vandalism/malicious injury to property for allegedly scratching a Nissan

とあることから、"keying"とは恐らくクルマのキーでキズをつける行為を意味する動詞なのだろうと想像はつきます。

果たして辞書を引いてみると、その通りの定義がちゃんと載っていますので、ちょっとびっくりです。（研究社の新英和大辞典には載っていませんが。）

ランダムハウス英和ではアメリカ英語の俗語表現とあります。

Online Etymology Dictionaryによれば、初出は1986年頃ということです。

Happy Kwanzaa!

クリスマスも終わりましたね。週末の土日にちょうど重なったせいか、街中には人が溢れ、道路も混雑が激しかったように思いました。

ところで、この時期、欧米での時効の挨拶といえば、

Happy holidays!

です。かつては"Merry Christmas!"でしたが、キリスト教以外の宗教を信じる人々に対して押し付けにならない、万人向けの挨拶として定着した感があります。

特に人種のるつぼと言われる米国では、移民も多いですから、この時期の「ホリデー」はクリスマスに限りません。

アフリカ系アメリカ人の間では、

Happy Kwanzaa!

というそうで、"Kwanzaa"というのは例年12月26日にスタートし、1月1日までの間祝われる恒例の行事だそうです。

Twitter grilled Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday for wishing people a "Happy Shwanza," instead of "Kwanzaa" during remarks closing out the House’s vote on the "omnibus" spending bill.

After the 4,155-page, $1.7 trillion bill passed in the House of Representatives Friday, Pelosi decided to close out the session of Congress by wishing happy holidays to several different groups celebrating this time of year, including one that doesn’t exist.

In her sign off – which she claimed "will probably be my last speech as Speaker of the House" – Pelosi said, "I yield back the balance of my time and wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe New Year. Happy Holidays. Merry Christmas. Happy Shwanza. Happy Hanukah."

私はこの"Kwanzaa"という行事を知りませんでしたが、引用した記事のおかげで（つまり、ペロシ下院議長の失言のおかげで！？）、スワヒリ語で"first fruit"（果実の初物）を意味するというこの単語を知る事となりました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによれば、Maulana Karengaというアフリカ系アメリカ人研究者が1966年に提唱したのが始まりだそうです。

ということで、今日から7日間がKwanzaaなのですが、1日1日にテーマがあるそうで、そのテーマとは

unity, 

self-determination, 

collective responsibility, 

cooperative economics, 

purpose, 

creativity, 

and faith.

だそうです。

Karen

スタンフォード大学が、差別的表現を排除するためのガイダンスを発行したそうです。

ガイダンスでは、人種、性的マイノリティ、障害者などに対して差別的に響く用語、表現の具体例が取り上げられ、同大学内での使用を禁じると共に、適切な言い換えが示されているそうです。

Stanford University published an index of "harmful language" it plans to eliminate from the school’s websites and computer code, offering terms to be used as replacements.

The Elimination of Harmful Language Initiative, which was revealed in May, is a "multi-phase, multi-year project to address harmful language in IT at Stanford," according to the guide.

The guide says its goal is to eliminate "many forms of harmful language," including "racist, violent, and biased (e.g., disability bias, ethnic bias, ethnic slurs, gender bias, implicit bias, sexual bias) language" in Stanford websites and code. It added that it strives to educate people on the impact of words.

例えば、アメリカ合衆国民を指すのに"American"というのはNGで、"US citizens"が正しい、といったものだそうです。

その他の例も挙げられているのですが、その中で、"Karen"はNG、というのに目が留まりました。

Other terms deemed harmful in this section include "abort," which offers the replacement of "cancel" or "end," because of moral concerns about abortion; "child prostitute" is replaced with a "child who has been trafficked," so the person is not defined by just one characteristic; and "Karen" is replaced with "demanding or entitled White woman."

言うまでもなく"Karen"は女性名で、"Catherine"というファーストネームの愛称ですが、これが白人女性を揶揄するのに使われるとは知りませんでした。

どうやら、"Karen"は中流階級の女性で、自身の権利や要求事項を声高に主張する白人女性の典型（！？）として、一般名詞化した俗語表現のようです。

2年前の記事ですが、そのような意味合いで使われている"Karen"を取り上げているものがありました。

Earlier this week Domino's Pizza had to issue an apology over a promotion it ran in Australia and New Zealand, offering free pizza to "nice Karens".

The company didn't pick out the name Karen at random. "Karen" has, in recent years, become a widespread meme referencing a specific type of middle-class white woman, who exhibits behaviours that stem from privilege.

To give some examples, "Karen" is associated with the kind of person who demands to "speak to the manager" in order to belittle service industry workers, is anti-vaccination, and carries out racist micro-aggressions, such as asking to touch black people's hair.

このような"Karen"の意味合いがどのような経緯で生まれたかについては、テレビドラマや映画、SNSなどが関係しているとされ、やはりと思わされます。

ところで、同じロジックで行くと、"lazy Susan"や"plain Jane"、"Negative Nancy"も言い換えが必要のように思いますがどうなんでしょう!?

Kosovar

バルカン半島中心部に位置するコソボ共和国（Kosovo）という国名はご存知でしょう。

ユーゴスラビア解体の過程で、2008年に独立を宣言した国です。

そのコソボ国民については、

Kosovar

といいますが、これは知りませんでした。

世界各国、地域や都市に住む人を指す語尾は、Americanや Russianなどに見られる-nがお馴染みですが、国名や都市名によってはその語尾が違ってくるものがあります。

小生はフェースブックよりもツイッターの方に親しみを感じます。当ブログで取り上げるニュース記事もツイッター経由で仕入れることが多いです。

そのツイッターの株をテスラCEOのイーロン・マスク氏が買い増しし、筆頭株主に躍り出たと話題です。

マスク氏がツイッターの経営にどう参画するのか、注目されます。

その件に関する記事の一部なんですが、

kludgy

という見慣れない単語です。

これ、"kludge"という名詞から派生した形容詞だそうですが、"kludge"というのは、

各構成要素が適合していない設計の悪いコンピューターシステム

（研究社新英和大辞典）

だそうです。

ちなみに語源不詳となっていますが、Merriam-Websterによると、ドイツ語のklugから来ているとか。

しかしながら、ドイツ語klugは賢いという意味なので、矛盾するようにも思われますが。

興味深いことにAmerican Heritage Dictionaryによると、

Probably alteration of mid-20th century American military slang kluge, complex device with a simple function, perhaps of imitative origin or perhaps after the Kluge (paper feeder), a piece of printing equipment first manufactured in 1919 by Brandtjen & Kluge, Inc., and reputedly difficult to repair.

とあり、とあるメーカーの印刷機械の名称（その部品が修理困難だったという話！？）に由来する、アメリカ英語のスラングという説明です。

ツイッターの操作性に特に不満はありませんが、偶々聴いていたラジオのニュースでは、投稿内容を後で編集する機能を追加する計画があるとか。

最後にこれまた偶然ですが、ツイッターの通知が来ていたのでチェックすると、本日は小生のツイッターアカウント開設から13年目ということでした。

klutz

"klutz"という単語は、

不器用な人; ばか、でくのぼう

という意味です。

イディッシュ語で木の塊、角材を意味するklotsから来ているということです。ドイツ語Klotzにも、田舎者とか間抜けの意味があります。

ちなみに、英語のclot（塊、また、ばか、のろま、の意）も語源を同じくします。

kerchief

今日は雑学的なお話しです。（いつも雑学じゃないか、という声が聞こえてきそうですが・・・。）

ハンカチ（手巾）というカタカナは、英語のhandkerchiefが約まったものというのは、誰でもご存知だと思います。

同様に、ネッカチーフというのは、neckerchiefという英単語があります。

いずれも、hand-、もしくはneck-という単語に"kerchief"という単語が結びついてできたものです。

では、kerchiefとは？

"kerchief"という単語についてはあまり馴染みが無い、聞いたことがない、という人が多いのではないかと思います。

実のところ、"kerchief"という独立した単語が元からあり、「カーチフ」などと呼ばれるももを指しますが、「カーチフ」自体に馴染みがないかも知れませんね。

そもそも"kerchief"という単語は古フランス語couvrechiefに由来するもので、原義としてはchief（頭部）を覆うもの（couvre）、という意味です。

私も実のところ、このカーチフというものを知りませんでしたが、頭に巻く頭巾のような布で、欧州の女性が身につける、民族衣装の一種とされるそうです。

"kerchief"という単語は13世紀頃からあり、頭部を覆う大きめの布を指しましたが、その後handkerchiefが生まれるのは1520年代になってからだそうです。（Online Etymology Dictionaryによる。）

"kerchief"は普通に用いられますが、細かい定義までは知りませんが、バンダナ（bandana）、ヘッドスカーフ（headscarf）とも言われ、最近流行っているようです。
