high-tail it

high-tail it

Stores along the busy stretch of Chinatown have been here before. Occasional police raids force illicit merchants to high-tail it when the cops show up to confiscate their ill-gotten goods — only for the unscrupulous sidewalk peddlers to set up shop again when the coast is clear.
(NYPD raids illegal NYC vendors again — but Canal Street businesses say it won’t change a thing. New York Post. July 12, 2026.)

switch things up

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia’s governors traditionally wear morning suits for their inaugurations. But for her swearing-in on Saturday, Gov. Abigail Spanberger, the first woman to fill that role, dressed in white, the color of women’s suffrage.

Spanberger’s office did not respond to an email seeking comment on her inauguration outfit. But in a recent interview with NPR, Spanberger said she wouldn’t continue that tradition.

“I’m not going to wear a morning coat, not to disappoint anyone,” she said.

The new governor’s white outfit, which included a long, white coat with gold buttons, paired with white gloves, appeared to be a nod to the women’s suffrage movement that led to American women securing the right to vote. In her address, Spanberger noted the gravity of the moment and highlighted suffragists’ refusal to give up.
(Virginia tradition calls for morning suits at an inauguration. But Spanberger switched things up. The Associated Press. January 18, 2026.)

Spanberger switched things up

fair shake

"You know, we live on a farm in France. A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life."

"I was worried about raising our kids in L.A., in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he continued. "France – they kind of don’t give a s--- about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids."
(Christina Dugan Ramirez. George Clooney explains why he 'worried' about raising his kids in Hollywood. Fox News. October 6, 2025.)

I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life

A bargain or deal: getting a fair shake.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

give a person a square shake

roll in the hay

A new study revealed the socially acceptable number of sexual partners for each gender — and it might surprise you.

According to the study, featured in “Social Psychological and Personality Science,” the magic number for guys is 4-5 lifetime partners — with 2-3 of them being casual hookups.

The study also revealed that a first roll in the hay for men often happens between the ages of 18 and 20.

For women, the magic number shrinks to 2-3 partners — with only 1-2 casual flings. Their first romp often happens between 16 and 18, originally reported by Vice.
(Marissa Matozzo. What’s the ‘ideal’ number of sexual partners? Study reveals the sweet spot — and it’s not what you think. New York Post. May 8, 2025.)

a first roll in the hay for men often happens between the ages of 18 and 20

roll in the hay

dad power

As the Yankees played the Rays at home, a Bronx Bombers fan had his glove ready as a foul ball was on its way. But his daughter, who was sitting on his shoulders, ended up making the catch extra challenging.

As the foul ball came closer, the smiling daughter covered her dad’s eyes with her hands.

Still, he was able to make the grab with his glove, pulling it into his chest to secure the ball and raising his hands in triumph.

“That’s dad power right there,” Yankees broadcaster Jeff Nelson said as the highlight played on YES Network.
(Bridget Reilly. Dad makes wild catch on foul ball while daughter covers his eyes at Yankees game. New York Post. May 4, 2025.)

That’s dad power right there

dad strength

Shohei Ohtani’s “Dad Strength” is finally beginning to kick in as the Los Angeles Dodgers' slugger hit his first home run since the birth of his daughter to jump-start a 15-2 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.
(Mike DiGiovanna. Watch: Shohei Ohtani's first home run since the birth of his daughter jump-starts Dodgers' 15-2 win. NBC Los Angeles. April 30, 2025.)

dead-on

Clicking the link led to a bogus “support portal” with dead-on duplicates of real Google login pages — designed to trick users into handing over their credentials.
(Marissa Matozzo. Billions of Gmail users’ personal information at grave risk in ‘sophisticated’ phishing attack. New York Post. April 21, 2025.)

dead-on copy
dead-on imitation
dead-on impersonation

dead spit of 〜(〜の生き写し)
dead ringer(そっくり)

The jokesters’ custom has been around for hundreds of years, although its exact birth is difficult to pinpoint. These days, depending on your location, it could be marked with a fish secretly pinned to someone’s back or a whoopee cushion or even news reports of flying penguins (yes, that actually happened ).

In France, the day is known as poisson d’avril, or “April Fish,” and has long had a fish-themed pranking tradition. In modern times, it’s become more of a day for children to relish in attaching paper fish to their friends’ backs, Atlas Obscura says.
(How April Fools’ Day is celebrated around the world. New York Post. April 1, 2025.)

in one piece

in one piece

Collins Dictionary(オンライン版)では以下のように定義されています。

If someone or something is still in one piece after a dangerous journey or experience, they are safe and not damaged or hurt.

Safety became central to the manufacturing of vehicles backed by laws to improve safety ratings monitored by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. There had to be a collective effort on the part of manufacturers, law enforcement, educators, parents, and even new teenage drivers to help them reach their destinations in one piece.

In recent decades, we have seen a surge of safety features developed for cars in an attempt to reduce risk and save the lives of teens who are fueled by dopamine, adrenaline, and an underdeveloped brain, driving a two-ton weapon at speeds of up to 70 mph (or more).
(USA Today, 2015)

live wire

President-elect Donald Trump described Italy’s conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a “real live wire” after meeting her and other world leaders in Paris.

Trump, 76, told The Post that his meet-and-greet with the Italian leader at the reopening of the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral on Sunday was “great” and that she had a “lot of energy.”

“I was with her a lot,” Trump said of Meloni — noting that they dined together during a 60-member world leader reception.
(Trump calls Italian PM Giorgia Meloni ‘a real live wire’ after world leaders meet in Paris. New York Post. December 8, 2024.)

on the double

Get your ass down here on the double!

I'm in trouble! Get the doctor on the double!

Ms. Johnson, send Smith and Jones in here, on the double.

Take me to 10th Street. On the double.

knock off

Australia gave millions of workers the legal right to "disconnect" on Monday, allowing them to ignore unreasonable out-of-hours calls, emails and texts from their bosses.

People can now refuse to monitor, read, or respond to their employers' attempts to contact them outside work hours -- unless that refusal is deemed "unreasonable".

Unions welcomed the legislation, saying it gave workers a way to reclaim some work-life balance.

"Today is a historic day for working people," said Michele O'Neil, president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions.

"Australian unions have reclaimed the right to knock off after work," she said.
(Australia gives millions of workers 'right to disconnect'. AFP. August 26, 2024.)

right to knock off after work

it sucks

Tensions remain high at a Queens park where a creep sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl – and remains on the loose, the subject of a massive NYPD manhunt.

“It sucks because I always come here,” Queens dad Will De Jesus said Sunday at Kissena Park, where the teenager was molested after she and a pal were forced into a secluded area by the suspect.

“I bring my daughter, my son,” said De Jesus, 52. “It sucks to hear things like that. Trust me, I got five girls so I know it sucks. To find out something happened to my daughter like that – woof.”
(NYC parkgoers on edge as creep who molested 13-year-old remains on loose. New York Post. June 16, 2024.)

it sucks

whirl

give it a whirl

A UK tourist sustained third-degree burns across his face after biting into an exotic fruit in Mexico.

The Bedforshire-based construction worker had been strolling through a local market, when he came upon a stand selling cashew apples, the fruits that encase the namesake nut.

Watson, who frequently shares photos of his experiences abroad on Instagram, had heard you could eat the fruit and decided to give it a whirl.

noggin

The more you use your noggin at work, the better your memory and brain function will be later in life, according to a study published on Wednesday in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Researchers measured people’s cognitive stimulation while doing more manual tasks such as controlling equipment or factory work and compared it to the cognitive stimulation of people working in jobs where they had to analyze information and interpret it for other people.

The study found that people working jobs with the lowest demands had a 66% greater risk of mild cognitive impairment compared to those who worked jobs with higher cognitive demands.
(Alexandra Klausner. Here’s the job that will help keep you sharp later in life: study. New York Post. April 17, 2024.)

The more you use your noggin at work, the better your memory and brain function will be later in life

noggin

cry uncle

Corporate America may be bumping up against the limit of its power to keep raising prices as consumers in some markets cry uncle.

At McDonald’s, which has repeatedly boasted about its ability to raise menu prices without denting sales, executives are finally acknowledging that customers need a break.

On Monday, as the burger chain reported weaker-than-expected sales at its US stores, CEO Chris Kempczinski addressed McDonald’s “affordability” problem, and indicated the chain would cut prices on some menu items.
(Allison Morrow. McDonald’s pushed customers to the brink on price. They’re starting to push back. CNN. February 6, 2024.)

consumers in some markets cry uncle

say uncle

epic fail

David Cameron was accused of an “epic fail” over his broken pledge to slash immigration.

The former prime minister once vowed to bring net migration - the difference between the numbers entering and leaving the UK - down to the “tens of thousands”.

But the government has never come close to achieving that goal - and figures released in November showed it hit 745,000 in 2022.
(Kevin Schofield. 'Epic Fail': Sky News Presenter Roasts David Cameron Over Broken Immigration Pledge. Huffington Post. January 14, 2024.)

epic fail

Roosters act differently when faced with another chicken versus just their own reflection. This may mean that the birds can recognise themselves in a mirror, a key test of self-awareness in animals. The way researchers tailored this mirror test to roosters may open up new methods of determining self-recognition in a diversity of animal species.

In the traditional mirror self-recognition test, developed in 1970, researchers place a mark on an animal’s body in a spot that it could only see reflected in a mirror. They note if the animal inspects or touches the mark while examining its reflection, suggesting it understands the reflection represents its own body. Precious few non-human species have passed this test, but those that have include some great apes, dolphins, elephants and magpies. In recent years, a few researchers have claimed other species – such as penguins, horses, cleaner wrasse fish and manta rays – have passed the test, but not without controversy.
(Jake Buehler. Roosters may be able to recognise themselves in a mirror. New Scientist. October 25, 2023.)

Precious few non-human species have passed this test

lightbulb moment

“One or two weeks in, it was a lightbulb moment about how much I could save doing this,” declared the burgeoning minimalist, who initially decamped in Illinois before settling on a place in upstate New York.
(Ben Cost. I quit my job to live in a tent with my son — I’ve saved $50K and couldn’t be happier. New York Post. October 9, 2023.)

A moment of sudden inspiration, revelation, or recognition
(Collins Dictionary)

A light bulb went on in my head.

That was my p*** history of myself 〜

potted history

Sue me for having a life.

Embattled Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) appeared to shift his response to photos apparently showing him in drag years ago, after saying earlier this week that reports that he performed as a drag queen were “categorically false.”

Reporters barraged Santos with questions about the photos as he arrived at New York’s LaGuardia Airport on Saturday, according to CNN.

“No, I was not a drag queen in Brazil, guys,” Santos responded. “I was young, and I had fun at a festival. Sue me for having a life.”

Reuters published a story last week in which two former acquaintances of Santos told the news wire that the 34-year-old lawmaker participated in drag queen contests and cross-dressed in gay pride events in Brazil some 15 years ago.

“I was young, and I had fun at a festival. Sue me for having a life.”

Sue me for having a life."

"Sue me..."

Wiktionary

Phrase sarcastically used to suggest that a person who does not like the actions or opinions of the speaker can respond by filing a lawsuit against the speaker.

Often preceded by "so", and used in rhetorical situations where filing a lawsuit would not actually be practical or possible.
