order of magnitude

OpenAI, Anthropic and security researchers are investigating tens of thousands of incidents in which their frontier models took steps that outside evaluators would consider problematic, sources told Axios.

Why it matters: The sheer number of incidents, which occurred in recent months in internal testing and the real world, indicates that the problem is orders of magnitude more complex than what is publicly known.
(Madison Mills. Scoop: Top AI companies probing tens of thousands of security incidents. Axios. September 26, 2026.)

the problem is orders of magnitude more complex than what is publicly known

of the same order of magnitude(同程度の大きさの)
Their estate is larger than ours by two orders of magnitude.(彼らの土地は我々のよりも二桁分大きい。

これらの用例は、"of the same order of magnitude"や"by two orders of magnitude"であり、前置詞ofやbyがありますが、記事の用例は前置詞がありません。

Dan Sullivan supports Dan Sullivan against Dan Sullivan in Alaska’s US Senate election, says a former Alaskan mayor who recently backed the race’s Republican incumbent over a challenger sharing their name.

That development provided another of multiple absurd elements to Dan S Sullivan’s campaign for a third term in the US Senate, which – beside Mary Peltola, a former Alaska Democratic congresswoman – has drawn opposition from Dan J Sullivan.

Dan J Sullivan emerged from an 18 August primary to join a four-candidate field rounded out by Dan S Sullivan, Peltola and one other contender. His presence in the field for the general election during the 3 November midterms has prompted accusations that he is a Democratic plant aiming to draw enough votes away from Dan J Sullivan – whose name was positioned consecutively to him on the primary ballot – so that Peltola can win.
(Ramon Antonias Vargas. Ex-mayor Dan Sullivan supports incumbent Dan Sullivan’s Senate bid against third Dan Sullivan. The Guardian. August 24, 2026.)

Dan Sullivan supports Dan Sullivan against Dan Sullivan

“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for [Senator] Daniel S Sullivan”

Trump, though, was not the only Republican politico to come out swinging for Dan S Sullivan’s re-election bid on the day of the primary, in which Peltola finished first. Another who came out in favor of the incumbent was Dan A Sullivan, the mayor of Anchorage, Alaska, for six years beginning in 2009.

“As the OG Dan Sullivan, I urge Alaskans to vote for [Senator] Daniel S Sullivan,” he also wrote. “He’s been great for Alaska.”

Dan A Sullivan’s statement of support for Dan S Sullivan, the senator, at the expense of Dan J Sullivan invoked a colloquial term meaning original. It was unclear if he staked the claim of being the original because, at 75, he was older than Dan S Sullivan, 61, and Dan J Sullivan, 70, a retired schoolteacher and US Forest Service employee with no prior political experience.
(ibid.)

someone or something that is an original or originator and especially one that is highly respected or regarded

original gangster

CNN, of course, is now Donald Trump's least favorite network, and one of several networks that were initially barred from White House press briefings with Sean Spicer. CNN is also the original gangsta (OG) "fake news" organization, according to President Trump, even though CNN is very much a real and largely respected global news organization.

OTT

Some details are surfacing from inside Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s mammoth Madison Square Garden nuptials – and they’re less than glowing reviews.

The wedding, attended by everyone from Steven Spielberg to Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton to former Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet, was “a bit of a s*** show,” one source told TMZ.

Another guest, also speaking anonymously, described the OTT wedding celebration to the Daily Mail as “tacky” and said guests faced long waits and queues for both food and drink.
(Nick Bond. Celeb chaos at Taylor Swift’s ‘tacky’ mega-wedding. News.com.au. July 7, 2026.)

 the OTT wedding celebration

Over The Top

overview effect

overview effect

The astronauts’ expressions of admiration and longing for Earth echo a long history of space explorers gaining new appreciation for their home planet.

It’s called the “overview effect,” a term coined by science author and philosopher Frank White in 1987. It refers to a shift in perspective that occurs when humans are given the chance to view Earth in the context of its cosmic backdrop — driving home how perfectly suited the planet is for our habitation and how unforgiving the great beyond appears.
(Jackie Wattles. ‘It really bent your mind’: The life-altering phenomenon astronauts experience in space. CNN. April 9, 2026.)

“What you realize is every single person that you know is sustained” by the thin band of atmosphere, which is visible in its entirety from space, Koch previously said of her experience at the space station. “Everything else outside of it is completely inhospitable. You don’t see borders, you don’t see religious lines, you don’t see political boundaries. All you see is Earth and you see that we are way more alike than we are different.”
(ibid.)

outback

Can you imagine marking New Year's Eve three times in one night?

An outback community located at the junctions of the Queensland, South Australia and New South Wales borders will do just that tonight, each time the clock strikes midnight in the three states.

Cameron Corner local Kate Osman has been part of the triple New Year's Eve shindig since 2000.

She hosts revellers at her corner-store-come-pub, before the party moves down the road to the state marker, known as the "corner post", at 11pm.
(Nakita Jager. Cameron Corner celebrates New Year's Eve three times in one night, on three state borders. ABC News. December 31, 2025.)

動詞の"out" ー out

A federal judge said California schools cannot prevent educators from disclosing their child’s gender identity to parents, and ordered that schools limit the ways in which they affirm a student’s gender identity.

“When it comes to a student’s change in gender identity, California state policymakers apparently do not trust parents to do the right thing for their child,” U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez of San Diego wrote Monday. “So, the state purposefully interferes with a parent’s access to meaningful information about their child’s gender identity choices.”

The Legislature’s LGBTQ Caucus denounced the ruling as “retaliatory politics” designed to promote “forced outing policies that pit families against school officials all at the detriment of students’ mental health and academic success.”
(Bob Egelko Federal judge says California schools must allow teachers to out transgender students to parents. San Francisco Chronicle. December 23, 2025.)

allow teachers to out transgender students to parents

disclosing their child’s gender identity to parents

To expose (someone considered to be heterosexual) as being gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsに、

…to out, to acknowledge publicly that you are homosexual, and to be outed, to be thus exposed.

Such acknowledgement, whether under duress or voluntary, is called outing.

old timer

The restaurant chain responded on Monday to widespread criticism of its new logo and remodel. The pushback centered on the streamlined logo, which very noticeably did not include the "old timer," or Uncle Herschel, seated on a chair leaning up against a barrel.

The "old timer" logo, which had been in place since 1977, was replaced with a barrel-shaped yellow background the the restaurant's name written across it in a similar font.
(Sarah Gray. Cracker Barrel responds to criticism of new logo, says 'old timer' will stay on menus and road signage. Business Insider. August 26, 2025.)

A woman’s boyfriend didn’t tell her he quit his job — and then accused her of being unsupportive when she didn’t want to pay the full rent they once split.

The frustrated girlfriend took to the r/AITA_WIBTA_PUBLIC Reddit forum to vent about her situation — which has since been deleted.
(Fabiana Buontempo. Selfish boyfriend secretly quits job — and expects girlfriend to financially support them: ‘Get rid of that man-child’. New York Post. August 10, 2025.)

The OP had to learn of her boyfriend’s impulsive decision to quit his job from their mutual friend.
(ibid.)

…the original poster started to notice that her man was home more than usual, especially during times when he should’ve been at work.
(ibid.)

offal

"The problem with just feeding lions meat is that the offal (liver, heart, etc.) is much richer in various nutrients than muscle meat – wild lions only start eating the muscle tissue after they've finished the offal," Craig Packer, founder and director of the Lion Center at the University of Minnesota, told NPR in an email. "So feeding lions anything besides horse and cow meat would probably be a welcome change."

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) is an accreditation body for conservation programs in the United States. It said that its member zoos do not employ or endorse the solicitation of pets for food.

But the Nutritional Advisory Group to the AZA highlights the importance of predatory animals still having access to large and whole animal remains as part of a balanced diet.
(Alana Wise. A zoo in Denmark asked patrons to donate their pets. Not as attractions, but for food. NPR. August 6, 2025.)

onus

This telephone cold shoulder came to light via a recruiter who posted on X earlier this month, “something I’ve noticed about Gen Z specifically is that a lot of them answer the phone and don’t say anything.”

“Like I can hear their breathing and the background noise, but they wait for you to say hello first,” they explained.

Worst of all, this was not a cold call, but rather a prearranged call made at a time the recipient themselves had chosen — and on a number she had sent them so they’d know she’d be on the line.
(Ben Cost. ‘I can hear their breathing:’ Employers enraged over Gen Z’s rude phone etiquette. New York Post. July 21, 2025.)

That’s right, in a backwards-seeming trend that’s baffling older generations, Zoomers are putting the onus on the person who called to initiate conversation like a game of telephone chicken.
(ibid.)

put the onus on the person…

one-timing

Servers everywhere agree that this one common dining habit is more disruptive than diners realize.

Calling your server over multiple times on separate occasions for things such as extra napkins, a lemon wedge, more dressing or another spoon seems innocent but in reality, it pisses off servers.

It even has a name: one-timing.

While each request is reasonable on its own, one-timing can significantly disrupt a server’s flow and add stress to an already busy shift.
(Adriana Diaz. Restaurant servers ‘hate’ this common customer habit — and it’s something most people are guilty of doing. New York Post. July 2, 2025.)

one-timing

omnishambles

This weekend, there was a new whiplash as U.S. negotiators announced that they would scale back tariffs to around 30%. In response, China reduced its tariffs on U.S. goods to 10%. Even though the details of the negotiation are still trickling out, the White House is already trumpeting the “Art of the Deal.”

While the U.S. did avoid a major economic calamity, this is not a deal. The U.S. blinked. Welcome to the tariff "omnishambles."
(Abraham Newman. The U.S.-China ‘deal’ is no deal. The U.S. just blinked. MSNBC. May 13, 2025.)

"Omnishambles" has been named word of the year by the Oxford English Dictionary.

The word - meaning a situation which is shambolic from every possible angle - was coined in 2009 by the writers of BBC political satire The Thick of It.
(Omnishambles named word of the year by Oxford English Dictionary. BBC News. November 13, 2012.)

ordnance

Even relatively conservative estimates show hundreds of thousands of deaths so far, and the use of cluster munitions makes it highly likely that Ukrainians will continue to be blown up by leftover ordnance for many years after the fighting is over.
(Ben Burgis. Trump’s Russia-Ukraine war negotiation strategy is incredibly unusual — and not in a good way. MSNBC. April 24, 2025.)

ordnance

Over the next decade, Americans and Vietnamese worked together to find remains of soldiers missing from the war, clear unexploded ordnance, known as UXO, and clean up some of the Agent Orange left behind.
(PBS News Hour, 2019)

outfox

Understandably, many reckon that additional tariffs and restrictions on China will be bad for its economy. But Trump’s protectionist efforts could cause less harm than expected. In fact, Chinese industry could prosper in spite (or even because) of them. Here are the counterarguments.

Let’s begin with the immediate, direct economic impact of tariffs. China has diversified away from the US market since Trump’s first term. Total American demand for Chinese goods now accounts for about 2.8 per cent of China’s GDP, according to Capital Economics.

Its calculations suggest that an increase in the effective tariff from around 15 per cent to 60 per cent (in extremis) — as Trump has threatened — could shrink the Chinese economy by a mere 1 per cent.
(Tej Parikh. China can outfox Trump’s tariffs. Financial Times. January 19, 2025.)

China can outfox Trump’s tariffs

Sometimes a shoe is more than a shoe.

In the mayhem of the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump at his rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a single black Oxford shoe was left behind, abandoned on the platform where the former president was wounded by a sniper’s bullet and smothered in a Secret Service protective scrum.

Trump, it seems, lost one shoe in the melee on stage. That shoe – a sole survivor – reveals a lot about Trump as a consummate performer who cannily thinks first about himself and then about his audience. Under fire and on camera, the events in Butler offer a remarkable window into Trump’s primal instincts and mastery of political theater.

For Trump, one shoe is a reminder of his moment in crisis. His first impulse was that he needed his Oxfords and didn’t want to leave them behind. But then his second instinct took over, making an even more indelible mark. At this moment in American politics, it seems this enduring image of a raised fist in the midst of chaos and confusion may be winning over stability and comfort.
(Ben Sherwood. What Donald Trump’s Abandoned Shoe Reveals About Him and America. The Daily Beast. July 15, 2024.)

Oxford(s)"とは、

Oxford shoes

oppo

All dogs go to heaven, but South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s puppy-executing ways may have just cost her a chance at entering the promised land of the White House as Trump’s running mate.

Several Republicans close to Trump — who, admittedly, are aligned with others vying for the Trump VP slot, or who simply don’t like Noem — are using the MAGA governor’s story of shooting and killing an unruly puppy to try to help nuke the former president’s opinion of her. In the days since the story from Noem’s memoir went viral, multiple Trump allies and confidants flagged the dog-killing and press coverage of it directly to Trump, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter and another source briefed on it, hoping it would cause him to view her as an out-of-touch buffoon.

“She did oppo against herself,” one Trump adviser says, mockingly.
(Trump Allies Hope Kristi Noem’s Puppy Killing Also Kills Her VP Chances. Rolling Stone. April 29, 2024.)

She did oppo against herself

opposition research

damaging information about a political candidate that is gathered and used or made public usually by an opponent's camp

over easy

"American diner lingo"、

"Burn the British!" was a popular outcry from waiters to cooks in a largely forgotten uniquely American culinary vernacular. That would be diner lingo.

"'Burn the British' meant toasted English muffins," recalled David Steinmann, who was born in Brooklyn in the 1940s and today is chairman of the Jewish Institute for the National Security of America (JINSA).
(Kerry J Byrne. American diner lingo existed in patriotic era when 'Burn the British!' meant toasted English muffin. Fox News. April 15, 2024.)

Fry eggs sunnyside up.

"Every diner had the counter man and the cooks," said Steinmann, who as a boy in New York City in the 1950s ate each Saturday with his family at their local diner in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn.

"If you ordered eggs sunny-side-up, the counter man yelled out, ‘Give me a pair looking at ya.' You wanted them over easy, he'd yell, ‘Give me a pair and blind ‘em.'"
(ibid.)

‘Give me a pair looking at ya'

‘Give me a pair and blind ‘em.'

objectification

A national news service in Australia has been criticized for using AI to sexualize an image of Victoria state parliament member Georgie Purcell.

The photo, published by Nine News earlier this month, was torn apart by Purcell on social media, who called the channel out for the "constant sexualization and objectification" that female politicians in Australia are subjected to.

The doctored image appears to emphasize the politician's breasts and mysteriously exposes her midriff, despite the original image showing her wearing a one-piece dress.
(Victor Tangermann. Scandal Mounts as TV Network Used AI to Sexualize Image of Politician. Yahoo! News. February 1, 2024.)

constant sexualization and objectification

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

to treat as an object or cause to have objective reality

They believe that beauty pageants objectify women.

organza

Julien's Auctions announced on Sunday that Princess Diana's ballerina-length evening dress by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury that she wore in Florence, Italy in April 1985 and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986, along with a matching illustration, sold for $1,148,080. The winning bid was 11 times its original estimate of $100,000.

According to Julien's Auctions, "The dress with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her being a patron of The English National Ballet."
(Stephanie Petit. Princess Diana's Dress Sells for a Record-Breaking $1.1 Million at Auction — 11 Times the Estimated Price. People. December 18, 2023.)

a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow

overbite

overbite

A woman who was branded 'horse face' due to her extreme overbite says a £25,000 jaw operation has made her feel like a new woman - and she's even been compared to Kate Beckinsale.

Olivia Boardman, 29, who lives in Wembley, London, was taunted by bullies since the age of 10, when fellow pupils first noticed her overbite, which occurs when the front teeth protrude far beyond the bottom row of teeth.

But the cosmetic problem soon transformed into a health one when Olivia began experiencing sleep apnoea and lower oxygen levels to her brain - both caused by her overbite.

The film and TV trailer maker, who's originally from Manchester, said the condition made her feel confused and tired all the time, and things became so dire she even swore off dating.

But now after going under the knife, Olivia says she has a new lease of life and is flattered at being mistaken for a 'supermodel'.
(Maria Okanrende. Bullies used to call me 'horse face' because of my overbite so I paid £25,000 to fix it - now people say I look like Kate Beckinsale. Daily Mail. November 9, 2023.)
