perjury

今月始めに国土安全保障省の長官から更迭されたKristi Noem氏に偽証罪の嫌疑がかけられています。

移民政策の一環で製作されたキャンペーン動画に200万ドルという巨費が注ぎ込まれたという件で追及を受けていたNoem氏は、費用についてトランプ大統領も了承の上だったと釈明しましたが、トランプ氏は聞いていないとコメント。Noem氏の釈明は議会での偽証に相当すると民主党が難じているものです。

The top Democrats on the House and Senate Judiciary committees are calling on Attorney General Pam Bondi to investigate whether departing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem lied under oath before Congress.

(中略)

"A number of her statements appear to violate criminal statutes prohibiting perjury and knowingly making false statements to Congress," the lawmakers wrote, focusing on her remarks that the department hadn't violated court orders related to its immigration enforcement.
(Justin Pupp. Durbin and Raskin call for perjury investigation into DHS' Kristi Noem. CNBC. March 16, 2026.)

disinvite? uninvite? - disinvite

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he was barred from speaking at USA House, the American pavilion at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after pressure from the Trump administration.

After being disinvited from a fireside chat with Fortune magazine, Newsom’s office was offered a casual ‘VIP nightcap’ instead.
(Newsom says White House blocked him from speaking at global forum. Los Angeles Times. January 21, 2026.)

さて、取り上げたいのは、

disinvite

という動詞です。

記事を読むと、元々スピーチをする予定であったということは明らかです。そのイベントには招待(invite)されており、それが取り消しになった、ということを"disinvite"と表現しています。

"disinvite"なんて動詞があったのかなと思いつつ辞書を引いてみると、研究社の新英和大辞典には載っていないのですが、ランダムハウス英和辞書には、

招待を取り消す

とあり、American Heritage Dictionary にも、

To rescind an invitation

guns-a-blazing

トランプ米大統領は、キリスト教徒の殺害が相次いでいることを受けてナイジェリアに軍事介入するとSNSに投稿したと報じられています。

President Donald Trump on Saturday threatened U.S. military intervention in Nigeria and the withholding of all foreign aid if its government continues “to allow the killing of Christians.”

Trump said in a post to social media that if Nigeria does not halt the persecution of Christians he may send U.S. troops “guns-a-blazing” to “completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”
(Ben Johansen. Trump threatens to deploy the military 'guns-a-blazing' to Nigeria. Politico. November 1, 2025.)

ナイジェリアではイスラム原理主義組織によるキリスト教徒へのテロが多発、ナイジェリア政府が対策を取らないならば米国の支援を中止し、派兵するとしています。

トランプ氏の投稿で、

guns-a-blazing

という表現が使われており、引用符付きとなっている他、関連記事のタイトルでもこの表現が引用されています。

何か特別な意味がありそうですが、軍事介入というあたり、銃(guns)を発射する(blaze)というのは文字通りの意味かとも思いました。

辞書には載っていないようなのですが、"with guns blazing"、あるいは"with all guns blazing"という類似のフレーズがあり、総力を上げて、というような意味合いがあるようです。

If you come out with guns blazing or with all guns blazing, you put all your effort and energy into trying to achieve something.
(Collins Dictionary)

Prefixing a- to verb forms ending in -ing, as in a-hunting and a-fishing, was once fairly common in vernacular US speech, particularly in the highland areas of the South and in the Southwest. Such verb forms derive from an Old English construction in which a preposition, usually on, was placed in front of a verbal noun—a verb to which -ing had been added to indicate that the action was extended or ongoing. Gradually such prepositions were shortened to a-. The -ing forms came to be regarded as present participles rather than verbal nouns, and the use of a- was extended to genuine present participles. Eventually a- disappeared from many dialects, including Standard English in the United States and Great Britain, although it is still retained today in some isolated dialect areas. Today, speakers who use the a- prefix do not use it randomly. Rather, a- is only used with -ing words that begin with a consonant, have stress on the first syllable, and function as part of a verb phrase, as in She was a-running.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

この解説にありますように、元はonという前置詞がその役割を果たしていたようです。前置詞onを動名詞(〜ing)の前に置いて、動詞が示す行為が進行、発展の途中であることを意味したというものです。このonがいつしかa-に取って代わられたようです。

では、トランプ氏発言の"guns-a-blazing"はどう訳すのが適当か?

日本のメディアの報道でこれを直接訳したと思われるものはあまり多くないようでしたが、

といったものが見られました。

atto-

The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier on Tuesday for techniques that illuminate the subatomic realm of electrons, providing a new perspective into a previously unexplored domain.

Electrons move at a whopping 43 miles a second. This speed has long made them impossible to study. The new experimental techniques created by the three scientist-laureates use short light pulses to capture an electron’s movement at a single moment in time.
(Nobel Prize in Physics Awarded to 3 Scientists for Illuminating How Electrons Move. New York Times. October 3, 2023.)

電子の動くスピードというにはものすごい速いそうで、何と秒速43マイル(!?)なんだそうです。故に電子の挙動を観測することはこれまで困難とされていました。

電子の挙動を観察するためにはごく短い時間だけ光るフラッシュのような技術が求められていたということなのですが、「ごく短い時間」というのがこれまた常人の理解を超えた世界の話で、

attosecond

という単位なのだそうです。これは10のマイナス18乗秒(one quintillionth)のことで、日本語では「アト秒」と訳されています。

To study the movement of electrons, the scientists had to use pulses of light that last only on the scale of attoseconds; an attosecond is one quintillionth of a second. The number of attoseconds in a single second is the same as the number of all the seconds that have elapsed since the universe burst into existence 13.8 billion years ago, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the Nobel Prizes.
(ibid.)

上述の通り、"attosecond"のatto-は、10のマイナス18乗を表す接頭辞なんですが、国際単位系(SI)で定められているものです。

調べてみると、小生も「マイクロ」、「ナノ」、「ピコ」までは聞いたことがありますが、その次が「フェムト」、次いで「アト」と続きます。

atto-という接頭辞はデンマーク語の数詞で18を表すattenから来ています。

ちなみに、「フェムト」(10のマイナス15乗)もデンマーク語で15を表すfemtenから来ています。

inauthentic? unauthentic? ― inauthentic

フェースブックが迷惑な友達リクエストをブロックする機能を追加するそうです。

Facebook, like every social media platform, has issues with harassment and bullying. In order to prevent certain types of harassment, Facebook is introducing some new features to help prevent unwanted friend requests and messages.

“We’ve heard stories from people who have blocked someone only to encounter the same harasser using a different account,” Facebook Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis wrote on Facebook’s blog. “In order to help prevent those bad encounters, we are building on existing features that prevent fake and inauthentic accounts on Facebook.”

Let’s say you block someone and then that person decides to create another account so they can contact you. With these new tools in place, Facebook is aiming to recognize when someone does that and prevent them from sending a message or friend request to you. Facebook is using signals, like IP addresses, to recognize when someone has created a fake or inauthentic account.
(Megan Rose Dickey. Facebook has new tools to prevent unwanted friend requests and messages. Tech Crunch. December 20, 2017.)

私自身はあまりフェースブックを使わないのですが(アカウントだけ持っています)、たまに全く知らない(そしてやや怪しい感じのする)人から友達リクエストを受け困惑することがありました。そのまま放置していますが・・・。

フェースブックによると、友達申請を却下してもアカウント名を変えてしつこくリクエストを送信したり、嫌がらせをする輩が後を絶たないらしく、そのようなアカウントの挙動を検出しブロックする機能を実装するようです。

ところで今日の一語なんですが、

inauthentic
