xenophobic

日本は"xenophobic"だ、というバイデン大統領の発言が物議を醸しています。

"xenophobic"とは、外国(人)を嫌う、という意味の形容詞で、"xenophobia"という名詞から来ています。

ご存知のように、-phobiaというのは何かを恐れる、嫌うという意味で、病名の〜恐怖症(例えば、高所恐怖症を指すacrophobiaなど)に使われます。

接頭辞xeno-は、異人(stranger)を意味するもので、ギリシア語から来ています。

President Joe Biden on Wednesday called close US ally Japan “xenophobic” at a Washington, D.C., fundraiser, just weeks after lauding the US-Japan alliance at a state dinner.

(中略)

“You know, one of the reasons why our economy is growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants. We look to – the reason – look, think about it – why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic. They don’t want immigrants,” Biden said, according to an official White House transcript released Thursday.

New Jersey is now joining at least 19 states and Washington, DC, in allowing an "X" gender identifier on driver's licenses and other identification.

The additional gender option was officially made available to comply with part of legislation passed in 2018 to allow residents to change their gender identification more easily, the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) announced Monday.

The new gender "X" identifier will indicate that a person's gender is unspecified, a big step for those who identify as nonbinary, or someone who doesn't identify as male or female. The department noted that the "X" marker can also be used by residents who don't want their gender specified on their license or other identification.

The change was originally planned for late 2020 but was delayed due to the pandemic, the commission said.

The brand new iPhone X -- that's pronounced "ten," by the way, not "ex" -- is a phone of firsts for Apple. The 5.8-inch OLED screen isn't just larger, it also uses a different technology that Apple says will make colors absolutely pop. It's also the first iPhone to completely do away with the iconic home button -- you know, the one Apple popularized on its very first iPhone. And, it's the first to offer Face ID as a new way to securely unlock the phone and pay in the check-out line.
(iPhone X hands-on: High price, new screen, no home button. CNET. September 12, 2017.)

Xmas(あるいは、X'mas)

In the spirit of the season, let’s turn to other lighter topics.

For example, I came across this interesting bit of history concerning the use of the term “Xmas” (an abbreviation of the word “Christmas,” the X substitutes for the word Christ).

As any English dictionary will show, this word is spelled with a capital “X” without an apostrophe after the X. According to the Merriam-Webster New Book of Word Histories, it was first used in the 16th century, back when it was taboo to casually or irreverently use the term “Christ.” Much farther back in time—or about 300 BC—the Jews considered it disrespectful to pronounce the divine proper name, which was “Yaweh,” or “Jehovah” in Hebrew. Thus, X was used as a symbol for Christ. “It derives from the Greek where “chi” (X) is the initial letter of Christos, the Greek form of Christ. The word Xmas is usually pronounced like Christmas….

In Latin manuscripts, Christus was often abbreviated by using the first two letters of Greek Christos, chi (x) and rho (P). When chi and rho are superimposed upon each other a symbol for Christ is formed. This symbol has had wide currency through centuries of the Christian era.”
