macromastia

Women with larger breasts are all too familiar with the backaches and neck pain that can come with a bigger set of ta-tas.

But a new study published today links having disproportionately big breasts with an unexpected health issue — that, on its surface, isn’t connected to the chest at all.

“Many people think of enlarged breast tissue primarily as a cosmetic issue, but our findings suggest it may be associated with a broader range of women’s health concerns,” lead study author Kristyn Pocock said in a press release.

The researchers specifically looked at macromastia, a medical condition involving abnormally large breasts. In this case, “abnormally large” refers to breast size disproportionately larger that the person’s frame. There is no specific cup size.
(Rachel Sacks. Having disproportionately big boobs linked to a surprising health issue: study. September 22, 2026.)

Legionnaires’ disease

The number of Legionnaires’ disease cases in an outbreak on the Upper East Side has risen to 14 — as local health officials are still racing to find the source.

Fourteen people have been diagnosed with the potentially fatal pneumonia-like illness in the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hall and Yorkville as of Sunday, according to the New York City Health Department.
(Zoe Hussain. Mysterious Legionnaires’ disease outbreak skyrockets to 14 cases across 2 NYC neighborhoods. New York Post. July 5, 2026.)

legionella

The City Council last fall approved a bill requiring building owners to test for Legionella microbes at least every month during warmer months when cooling towers are in use in response to the deadly outbreak.
(ibid.)

dyslexia

Donald Trump has said he believes people with learning disabilities should not be president, as he renewed his taunts at California Governor Gavin Newsom over his dyslexia.

President Trump said Newsom, a potential Democratic White House contender, was "dumb". He also made fun last week of the California governor's difficulty with reading and spelling, prompting Newsom to call him "a brain-dead moron".

The National Center for Learning Disabilities told the BBC it was "disturbed by and strongly condemns" the Republican president's remarks.

Dyslexia, a learning condition that disrupts how the brain processes written language, affects as many as one in five Americans.
(Sareen Habeshian . Trump says presidents 'should not have learning disabilities' as he mocks Newsom's dyslexia. BBC News. March 17, 2026.)

coprolalia

The BBC has apologised for not editing out a racial slur from its Bafta Film Awards coverage after a guest with Tourette's syndrome shouted out when two black actors were on stage.

John Davidson, whose life story inspired the film I Swear, shouted the N-word as Sinners stars Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the first prize of Sunday's ceremony.

Tourette's is characterised by sudden, involuntary and repetitive movements or sounds, known as tics.

Between 10% and 30% of people with the condition have tics that produce socially unacceptable words such as swearing - known as coprolalia - according to the Tourette's Action charity.

Davidson, a Tourette's campaigner from Galashiels in Scotland, who was made an MBE in 2019, shouted loudly several times before and during the Bafta ceremony.
(Steven McIntosh. BBC sorry for airing racial slur shouted by guest with Tourette's at Baftas. BBC News. February 23, 2026.)

coprolalia

tunnel vision

Donald Trump has a lot of odd fixations, both as a person and as a president. He tends to focus his tunnel vision on things he wants: the demolishing of the White House’s East Wing, the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. Many of Trump’s quirks are harmless, if unpleasant. (He seems to hate dogs, for example, but no one is forcing him to adopt one.) Some of his ideas, however, are more destructive: His stubborn and ill-informed attachment to tariffs has brought about considerable disorder in the international economy and hurt many of the American industries they were supposed to protect.

But a few of Trump’s obsessions are extraordinarily dangerous, and likely none more so than his determination to seize Greenland from Denmark, a country allied to the United States for more than two centuries.
(Tom Nichols. Trump Is Risking a Global Catastrophe. The Atlantic. January 14, 2026.)

hypertrichosis

A teenager has landed a spot in Guinness World Records for having the world’s hairiest face.

Lalit Patidar, an 18-year-old from India, was found to have 201.72 hairs per square centimeter, covering 95% of his face, according to Guinness.

The excessive hair growth is the result of a rare medical condition called hypertrichosis, informally known as "werewolf syndrome."
(Melissa Rudy. Teen with ‘werewolf syndrome’ breaks world record for hairiest face
Rare medical condition causes abnormal hair growth. Fox News. March 11, 2025.)

hypertrichosis

trichotillomania

hippocampus

Taxi drivers could be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease because of how they memorise routes, research suggests.

Scientists suspect that regularly driving from memory may boost brain power as a new study shows taxi drivers and ambulance drivers are much less likely to develop the form of dementia as they age.

Senior study author Professor Anupam Jena, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, said: "Our results highlight the possibility that neurological changes in the hippocampus or elsewhere among taxi and ambulance drivers may account for the lower rates of Alzheimer's disease.
(Martin Bagot. Ditch the Sat Navs as taxi drivers who memorised routes 'less likely to get Alzheimer’s'. The Mirror. December 16, 2024.)

British Medical Journal

hippocampus

Study lead author Dr Vishal Patel, a resident physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, said: "The same part of the brain that's involved in creating cognitive spatial maps - which we use to navigate the world around us - is also involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

primal scream

Remarkable footage shows Wisconsin women screaming in unison towards Lake Michigan in the wake of Vice President Harris's Nov. 5 loss to President-elect Trump.

The footage, which recently went viral on social media, was originally posted by a Facebook user named Tamara Gibbs. The event took place at Klode Park in Whitefish Bay on Nov. 9.

The extraordinary video shows around two dozen adult women screeching at the water. The screams eventually reach a crescendo, as video shows the shrieks getting gradually louder and louder until the group stopped.
(Andrea Margolis. Women engage in mass 'primal scream' in wake of Trump victory: 'Release our pain'. Fox News. November 27, 2024.)

psychotherapy in which the patient recalls and reenacts a particularly disturbing past experience usually occurring early in life and expresses normally repressed anger or frustration especially through spontaneous and unrestrained screams, hysteria, or violence

text neck, tech neck, or kyphosis

Researchers examined the effects of text neck on the spine and found it can affect alignment when you’re running or walking (not just looking at your phone).

The side effects of text neck may also include added stress to joints of the lower body including the hips, knees, and ankles and limited respiratory function—all of which could affect runners’ performance.
(Elizabeth Millard. Text Neck Side Effects Build Up Over Time and That Can Be a Real Problem for Runners. Runner’s World. October 8, 2024.)

text neck

From looking down at your phone every few minutes to working on a laptop to slouching on the couch for hours, everyday life is rife with moments of poor posture. One of the most pronounced these days is kyphosis, also known as “text neck” or “tech neck.”

This happens when your head is leaning forward in a way that elongates the back of the neck, which can lead to muscle strain, headaches, and even numbness or tingling in the hands and arms.
(ibid.)

kyphosis

myopia

Gen Zers are getting increasingly near-sighted from staring at their electronic devices all day and face a blindness epidemic if they continue to stay indoors while phone-addicted, a leading eye surgeon warns in a new report.

The rates of near-sightedness, or myopia, have been skyrocketing across the world with an increase of 46% in the UK over the last three decades, according to the Daily Mail.

In the US, a study from California says myopia has spiked a staggering 59% among teenagers.
(Yaron Steinbuch. Gen Zers face ‘blindness epidemic’ due to lack of sunlight from staring at phones: report. New York Post. March 4, 2024.)

myopia

overbite

overbite

A woman who was branded 'horse face' due to her extreme overbite says a £25,000 jaw operation has made her feel like a new woman - and she's even been compared to Kate Beckinsale.

Olivia Boardman, 29, who lives in Wembley, London, was taunted by bullies since the age of 10, when fellow pupils first noticed her overbite, which occurs when the front teeth protrude far beyond the bottom row of teeth.

But the cosmetic problem soon transformed into a health one when Olivia began experiencing sleep apnoea and lower oxygen levels to her brain - both caused by her overbite.

The film and TV trailer maker, who's originally from Manchester, said the condition made her feel confused and tired all the time, and things became so dire she even swore off dating.

But now after going under the knife, Olivia says she has a new lease of life and is flattered at being mistaken for a 'supermodel'.
(Maria Okanrende. Bullies used to call me 'horse face' because of my overbite so I paid £25,000 to fix it - now people say I look like Kate Beckinsale. Daily Mail. November 9, 2023.)

shigella

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is warning clinicians and public health departments about an alarming rise in serious gastrointestinal infections caused by bacteria that are resistant to all generally recommended antibiotics in the United States.

A recent agency health advisory said the CDC is monitoring an increase in people infected with strains of shigella bacteria that are highly resistant to available drugs. The CDC is calling these infections “a serious public health threat.”

Shigella infections, known as shigellosis, usually cause diarrhea that can be prolonged and bloody, along with fever and abdominal cramps.
(Lena H Sun. What to know about shigella, the drug-resistant stomach bug on the rise. The Washington Post. March 3, 2023.)

diabetes

diabetes

diabetes mellitus

areola

A Utah woman has been charged with lewdness in her own home after her stepchildren walked into the room and saw her bare chest.

Attorneys for the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah argued this week that the statute under which Tilli Buchanan, 27, was charged is unconstitutional, and they have asked a judge to drop the charges against her and change the state law.

Buchanan and her husband had been installing drywall in the garage and had taken off their shirts that were itchy from the fibers, she told The Salt Lake Tribune.
(Laurel Wamsley. Utah Woman Charged With Lewdness After Being Topless In Her Own Home. NPR. November 21, 2019.)

Now the state has charged Buchanan with three charges of lewdness involving a child. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor.

Though her husband was similarly clad, he was not charged with a crime.

The state's lewdness statute criminalizes exposure of "the female breast below the top of the areola" in the presence of a child in a private place "under circumstances the person should know will likely cause affront or alarm."
(ibid.)

exposure of "the female breast below the top of the areola"

locked-in syndrome

A bricklayer paralysed by a rare condition after an accident at work aims to inspire other sufferers with a book about his miraculous recovery.

Peter Coghlan, then 34, was left with locked-in syndrome after smashing his head into a concrete slab when he stood up in a tunnel.

Damage to his brain stem meant that although conscious, he could not speak or move apart from tiny eyelid flutters.

At his lowest ebb in hospital, Peter came to the grim realisation he could be a human vegetable for the rest of his life.
(Stephen White. Incredible recovery of locked-in syndrome victim who asked mum to kill him. Mirror. August 29, 2019.)

psuedocoma

postpartum depression

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug meant to specifically treat postpartum depression in mothers, a first for the agency.

The FDA announced in a news release Tuesday that it approved an intravenous infusion of brexanolone, a drug labeled as Zulresso. Patients would receive a continuous IV drip over 60 hours. The news release said clinical trials, which involved more than 200 women, showed brexanolone worked within hours to help treat postpartum depression, which affects 1 in 9 new mothers.

Postpartum depression is much more severe and longer-lasting than the “baby blues” many new mothers experience for about a week after giving birth. Symptoms of postpartum depression can include sadness, loss of interest, difficulty bonding with the baby and even suicidal thoughts.
(Sanjana Karanth. FDA Approves First Drug Targeted At Treating Postpartum Depression. The Huffington Post. March 19, 2019.)

macroglossia

A 16-month-old toddler in Jenks, Oklahoma, who was born with a rare condition that causes his tongue to be abnormally large will require surgery to reduce its size, his mother said.

Baker Roth was has a condition known as Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome or BWS. The genetic disorder is “commonly characterized by overgrowth,” according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. And it’s rare -- typically occurring with just one in 11,000 births.

Baker’s BWS diagnosis came as a surprise. Though ultrasound images appeared to show the boy’s tongue sticking out of his mouth, neither Roth nor her doctors ever considered it to be a sign of the rare condition.

“I always thought it was cute that he had his tongue sticking out in ultrasound scans, but realistically it was macroglossia [enlarged tongue] caused by BWS,” Roth told The Daily Mail. “Not a lot of doctors are familiar with the syndrome and we just thought it was adorable, I even posted about how cute it was.”

macroglossia

glossary

neti pot

Brain-eating amoeba

A Seattle woman has died after contracting a a rare brain-eating amoeba from using tap water in a neti pot - which turned her brain into 'bloody mush'.

Doctors had prescribed the woman, 69, to use the pot to flush out her nasal cavity after she'd been suffering from a persistent sinus infection.

But she used Brita-filtered water instead of sterile water and soon developed a strange rash on the bridge of her nose.

Unbeknownst to her, over the course of the next year, an amoeba was gnawing away at the woman's brain tissue.
(Natalie Rahhal. Woman killed by a rare brain-eating amoeba which 'turned her brain into a bloody mush' after she used a NETI POT to treat her sinus infection. The Daily Mail. December 8, 2018.)

The pot to flush out her nasal cavity

appendix

(CNN) — It may be painful, but there could be an unusual upside to appendicitis: Those who have had their appendix removed are 20% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease, according to a new analysis of more than 1 million people in Sweden.

The tiny organ, which is attached to and opens into the lower end of the large intestine, may contribute to this brain disorder that affects nearly a million Americans, the researchers say. Their study was published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
(Susan Scutti. Had your appendix removed? Your Parkinson's risk may be 20% lower. CNN. November 1, 2018.)

rhabdomyolysis

A Texas teen was reportedly diagnosed with a life-threatening illness after hitting the gym too hard.

Jared Shamburger, 17, said he first started feeling “super” sore last week after lifting weights for 90 minutes at a Houston-area gym, news station KTRK reported.

“Everything hurt,” Shamburger said. “It hurt to the touch. It was swollen.”

The teen, who recently joined the gym, said he was trying to “go hard fast” to compete with his dad and older brother, both of whom had been into bodybuilding for years.

“The mama bear in me kind of took over and I called the pediatrician and said, ‘I really think my son has rhabdo,'” mom Judy Shamburger said, referring to rhabdomyolysis.

Her suspicions turned out to be right. The teen was hospitalized for five days with the life-threatening condition.

rhabdomyolysis
