all over the map

Navigation platforms are all over the map so far on President Donald Trump's push to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.

After Trump's Aug. 27 executive order renaming the body of water between the United States and Canada, some are eyeing platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps to see how they plan to handle the change.

Trump's order instructs the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to formalize the change to Lake America within 30 days. It comes amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada.
(Melina Khan. How maps are handling Lake Ontario to Lake America name change. USA TODAY. August 31, 2026.)

Navigation platforms are all over the map so far …

all over the map"という表現は慣用表現で、混乱しているとか、まとまりが無い、一貫性を欠く、という意味合いで使われます。

all over the map"は多種多様であるというポジティブな意味合いで使われることもありますが、逆に言えば多種多様であるということはまとまりに欠けるとも言えるわけです。

hold water

Trump, who just a few days ago complimented North Korea, offered no further details of any planned meeting or talks to hold one.

“The fact that I get along with him, that’s a good thing, not a bad thing. He has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons,” Trump said during an event at at the White House, referring to Kim.

“Should’ve never allowed it to happen. They should’ve never allowed it, if I were president, I wouldn’t have allowed it. But he’s got them. I get along with him very well,” the president added.

It’s unclear if Trump’s claims hold any water, as the Kim’s younger sister, Kim Yo Jong, said Wednesday that North Korea’s position toward the U.S. had not changed, The Wall Street Journal reported.
(Ellen Mitchel. Trump claims he will meet with Kim Jong Un, North Korea has 57 nukes. The Hill. August 19, 2026.)

It’s unclear if Trump’s claims hold any water

hand in glove

Trump’s declaration Sunday that he would instruct the Pentagon to cut back on annual drills sent Seoul’s leaders scrambling to repair the damage. But the president appears more focused on pushing for investment from the country than trying to upend defenses against North Korea’s nuclear threat. And that means security on the world’s most militarized border hasn’t significantly changed.

The U.S. has more than 28,000 troops stationed on the peninsula, along with thick layers of air defenses. It has worked hand in glove with the Korean military for decades, a powerful joint force that works closely at every level. The border between a nuclear-armed North Korea and the U.S. ally to its south is a case study in mutually assured destruction. And top commanders in Seoul and Washington remain in tight contact.
(Paul McLeary. Trump’s threats to Seoul may be worse than their bite. Politico. August 18, 2026.)

has worked hand in glove with the Korean military for decades

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、

If one person or organization is working hand in glove with another person or organization, they are working very closely together.

You usually use this expression to suggest that the people you are talking about are doing something dishonest or immoral.

Many of the city’s politicians are hand in glove with smugglers.

Employment on the building sites is controlled by more than 40 gangs, who are believed to be hand-in-glove with the police.

millstone around your neck

Election deniers who played prominent roles in efforts to overturn the 2020 results triumphed in statewide Republican primaries Tuesday: Rep. Andy Biggs for governor, state Rep. Alexander Kolodin for secretary of state, and state Senate President Warren Petersen for attorney general.

Their victories show GOP primary voters continue to prefer candidates who have pushed false narratives about elections or worked to overturn them. But that can prove toxic in November — and Democrats plan to make their rivals pay for those positions in the fall.

“It’s one of those things that just won’t go away,” said former Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.). “In the Republican Party in Arizona, in the primary, carrying the Trump line on virtually everything — and that includes election denialism — is still something that benefits you.”

But in the general election, “it’s a stone around your neck,” Salmon said. “Among independents and moderate Republicans who vote in the general election, election denialism is not an asset.”
(‘It’s a stone around your neck’: Arizona Republicans once again nominate 2020 election deniers. Politico. July 22, 2026.)

it’s a stone around your neck

millstone around one's neck

smell the reality

Vance, asked at a White House news briefing about a report that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was fuming over the agreement, said he had not heard such comments from Netanyahu but criticised members of the Israeli leader’s cabinet, who he said have attacked the deal and personally attacked Trump.

“My message to them would be twofold. No 1: Donald J Trump is the only head of state in the entire world ‌who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this ‌moment in time,” Vance told reporters.

“If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left ‌in the entire world.“

“The problem for Israel is not Donald J Trump, and anybody in Israel who thinks their biggest problem is the president of the United States needs to wake up and smell the reality of the situation that country is in,” Vance said.
(JD Vance tells Iran deal critics in Israel: Trump is your only ally left in the world. The Guardian. June 19, 2026.)

smell the reality

US workers need to wake up and smell the reality!
(2012)

People who claim that only "the lazy people" will go bankrupt over medical bills need to wake up and smell the reality.
(2012)

wake up and smell the reality

wake up and smell the coffee

If you tell someone to wake up and smell the coffee, you are telling them to be more realistic and more aware of what is happening around them. This expression is used mainly in American English.

call time on

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to ban under-16s from major social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

The government will also stop children being able to livestream on "safer" sites, and stop them being able to talk to strangers on gaming apps.

Ministers are considering whether to impose social media curfews for children, but further details will not be unveiled until next month.

"This is a choice about whose side we're on: families across the country, or a status quo that isn't working," Sir Keir said.

He would, he said, "call time on a system that's failing our kids".
(Starmer set to ban under-16s from major social media platforms. BBC News. June 14, 2026.)

call time on a system that's failing our kids

put an end to something
(Collins Dictionary)

promise the moon

The city is warning tourists set to attend hot local summer events such as the World Cup and America250 to keep their eyes open for scammers — who are already in full swing prepping for the onslaught.

Investigators have already uncovered more than a few tourist-baiting scams, including some involving tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon and delivering far less and pedicab drivers ripping off customers, the pols said.
(NYC warns tourists headed to big local summer events that scams are already heating up. New York Post. June 8, 2026.)

tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon

simple as pimple

After several artists dropped out of a Washington, D.C., concert series organized by Freedom 250, rapper Vanilla Ice said he will still be on the bill, telling CBS News on Monday he would perform for anyone, including Russian President Vladimir Putin or Iran.

The rapper, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, told CBS News, "It's simple as a pimple for me, there's nothing to it. It's the birthday of America."

"Two hundred and fifty years. It's not anything to do with politics. I don't know why they're turning it into politics," Van Winkle said, adding he's "never voted in my life."
(Jordan Freiman. After several artists drop out of Freedom 250 concerts, Vanilla Ice says he'd "play for anybody" including Putin and Iran. CBS News. June 1, 2026.)

It's simple as a pimple for me

dip into saving

An increasing number of American households have struggled to afford enough food since 2020 because of rising economic strains, according to an analysis released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Wednesday.

“We find a remarkable increase in food insecurity, particularly among lower-educated and lower-income households and households with young children,” the economists wrote.

The report, which was based on the results of the New York Fed’s monthly survey of consumer expectations, found a significant increase in people who said they dipped into their savings from June 2020 to February 2026. This margin was even more pronounced for nonwhite households or those with children.
(Sarah Davis. Food insecurity increase for many Americans ‘remarkable’: NY Fed. The Hill. May 27, 2026.)

a significant increase in people who said they dipped into their savings

look over one’s shoulder

Mark Zuckerberg is signaling that Meta employees can stop looking over their shoulders.

After long emphasizing cost-cutting, management flattening, and "Year of Efficiency" rhetoric, the Meta chief struck an empathetic tone in his post-layoff email to employees on Wednesday — emphasizing stability, conceding communication failures, and promising to "do right by people along the way."

In his internal email to staffers, he thanked the roughly 8,000 workers who were being let go and emphasized his desire to provide "as much stability as possible" to those who remained.
(The strategy behind Zuckerberg's softer tone — and layoff reassurance. Business Insider. May 22, 2026.)

look(ing) over their shoulder

to worry or think about the possibility that something bad might happen, that someone will try to cause harm, etc.

tie someone in knots

Perhaps the most bizarre moment in the monthslong Iran war occurred in mid-April, when President Donald Trump insisted that Tehran had just “agreed to everything” he had demanded.

That didn’t pan out, of course. And there’s no reason to believe the agreements existed — even tentatively — anywhere except in Trump’s own head. Pretty much everything else continues to suggest, even weeks later, that the two sides remain far apart.

Trump acted like he could will an agreement into existence. Instead, he made it abundantly clear to everyone, including Iran, that he was desperate for a deal.

It wasn’t the first time, or the last.

Over and over again, Trump has appeared remarkably hesitant in recent weeks to resume fighting if Iran doesn’t give him what he wants. He and his administration have tied themselves in knots to explain why they keep giving Iran latitude and time.

But while this approach might occasionally calm the markets, Iranian leaders seem to be taking it as a signal that they can just wait out a US president who doesn’t want to go back to full-scale war.
(Aaron Blake. Trump ties himself in knots to avoid resuming a full-scale war in Iran. CNN. May 11, 2026.)

He and his administration have tied themselves in knots

Trump ties himself in knots

In a discussion or argument, if someone ties you in knots, they confuse you by using clever arguments, so that you cannot argue or think clearly any longer.

If you tie yourself in knots, you make yourself confused or anxious, and so you are not able to think clearly about things.

on borrowed time

North East

he is on borrowed time

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has said Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is on "borrowed time" following the local elections.

Residents across north-east England went to the polls on Thursday for all out council elections which saw Labour's hold on the region decimated.

Reform UK took control of Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside, meanwhile the party became the official opposition in North Tyneside and Newcastle was left without a majority.

Speaking on Politics North, McGuinness said she wanted to see change, but Sir Keir needed to act quickly if he was going to stay.

"[People] have said they have voted for change and they have shown in this election that they are not satisfied and the voters are never wrong - so something has to happen," the Labour mayor said.

"I think Keir Starmer needs a chance to turn things around but he is on borrowed time and that time will expire very, very quickly."
(North East Mayor says Starmer on 'borrowed time'. BBC News. May 10, 2026.)

jaw crashes to the floor

He came. He Sawe. He conquered. Not so very long ago, the idea of anyone running an official marathon in under two hours lurked only in the realms of the fantastical and theoretical: part holy grail, part scientific curiosity.

But over the course of one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds of a tumultuous spring day in London, Sabastian Sawe turned it into a brain-spinning reality. Imagine running 100 metres in under 17 seconds – and then keeping that pace up for another 26 and a bit miles. That is what the 31-year-old Kenyan did.

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor, the search for comparisons began. Was it up there with Sir Roger Bannister’s sub-four-minute mile in 1954? Or maybe Usain Bolt’s 100m world record of 9.58sec? Neither suggestion felt entirely outlandish. For this was an act of serene beauty and supreme destruction.
(Sean Ingle. Sabastian Sawe breaks two-hour barrier to make history in London Marathon. The Guardian. April 26, 2026.)

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor..

jaw(s) crash to the floor

jaw drops to the floor
jaw fell to the floor
jaw hit the floor

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor"とは何が言いたいのか、また悩ましい。

tables turn

Tom Barrett tapped into voter frustration over high gas prices as part of his successful 2024 run for Congress in Michigan. Now the Republican is on the defensive on that same issue as Democrats see an opportunity to flip his seat.

"Gas in Michigan is four bucks a gallon," Barrett said as he filmed himself filling up his tank at a gas station in August 2023. "When I'm elected to Congress, we'll produce our own energy. We'll get gas under control so that this will be a lot more affordable for families like yours and families like mine."

Nearly three years after he ‌posted that video to social media, average gas prices in Michigan are back near the same level, briefly topping $4 in early April before settling around $3.80 this week, up 27% since the Iran war began on February 28.

Tables turn as Republicans face gas-price attacks they once used on Democrats

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsには"Turn the tables"という慣用句として以下のような説明があります。

If you turn the tables on someone, you do something to change a situation so that you gain an advantage over them or cause them problems, after a time when they have had the advantages or have been causing problems for you.

cut bait

President Donald Trump's behavior and comments have long led political opponents to question his mental health, but now the accusation that he is unhinged is coming from more than the usual liberal suspects in the past few weeks.

Prominent conservative pundits − from former Fox News hosts Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson to conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and podcaster Candace Owens − are suggesting the president is unwell.

Jones, founder of Infowars and a longtime Trump supporter, said during a March 31 episode of his new program, "The Alex Jones Show," that GOP incumbents running for reelection need to "cut the bait" on the president before the 2026 midterm elections.
(Phillip M Bailey. MAGA dissidents join Democrats in questioning Trump's 'mental capacity'. USA TODAY. April 19, 2026.)

GOP incumbents running for reelection need to "cut the bait" on the president before the 2026 midterm elections

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsには、

fish or cut bait

You can tell someone to fish or cut bait when you want them to stop wasting time and make a decision to do something.

take the fifth

The MTA boasted that its “modern” fare gate pilot was a success on Wednesday — touting drops in fare evasion using limited data while ducking questions about how much the $1.1 billion system will actually cut down on the problem.

At a board meeting, officials flashed a chart claiming the towering glass paddles have cut fare beating by anywhere from 19% to 70%, depending on the station. But those numbers came from a single week of data on a pilot that has been running for more than three months.

“We’ll have more data shortly,” Torres-Springer added.

When one board member asked Deputy Chief of Staff Cathy Li how much the new gates would shave off the MTA’s about $350 million a year in subway fare evasion, Chair Janno Lieber jumped in before she could answer.

“I’m going to interrupt and take the fifth on that one,” Lieber said. “We have to see more data before we can have confidence.”
(Haley Brown. MTA calls $1.1B ‘modern’ fare gates a success, but official ducks question on numbers: ‘Take the fifth’. New York Post. March 25, 2026.)

I’m going to interrupt and take the fifth on that one

I’m going to... take the fifth "とは、黙秘権を行使します、ということになるのですが、裁判や議会の喚問などの場でもないところでのこの表現はやや大袈裟というか、少しふざけたようにも響きます。

hot as a pistol

President Donald Trump may believe the adage that the pen is mightier than the sword — as long as it’s a Sharpie.

During a Cabinet meeting Thursday that discussed the war in Iran, record-long security lines at many of the nation’s top airports, rising oil prices and skittish stock markets, the president interjected by holding up a custom-made black and gold Sharpie and offering a long story about how his preferred marker came to be a White House fixture.

Trump summed it up as “a business story.”

“For $5, I get a much better pen than for $1,000, and I can hand them out,” he said. “And, honestly, they’ve become hot as a pistol, so what can I tell you?”
(Will Weissert. Trump interrupts a Cabinet meeting dealing with the Iran war and rising prices to talk Sharpies. The Associated Press. March 24, 2026.)

And, honestly, they’ve become hot as a pistol

Performing extremely well.
Very popular or successful.
(The Free Dictionary)

Exceptionally popular, productive, or marketable.
(Wiktionary)

hotter than a three-dollar pistol

little hearts out

Trump’s comments, made to reporters before he left Palm Beach on Monday morning, added confusion to what has already been a war underpinned by mixed messages, contradicting statements, and wild claims from both sides.

On Saturday, for instance, the president sent the markets into a frenzy by announcing he would destroy Iran’s power plants if they didn’t fully open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours.

But on Monday morning, merely hours ahead of his deadline and after threats of retaliation from Iran, Trump announced he had given orders to postpone any military strikes against Iranian power plants for five days because the two countries had “very good and productive conversations.”

“If it goes well, we’re going to end up settling this. Otherwise, we just keep bombing our little hearts out,” he told reporters.
(Farrah Tomazin. Trump Unleashes Bonkers Rant Contradicting Himself Over War. Daily Beast. March 23, 2026.)

Otherwise, we just keep bombing our little hearts out

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

one's heart out

with great effort, energy, and enthusiasm : very hard

I remember Whitney when she was Americas sweetheart, just singing her little heart out.
(CNN, 2006)

Unbelievable, those boys dancing their little hearts out.
(CBS, 2012)

been there, done that

CNN記事は現状を、"been there, done that"の感があるといいます。

"been there, done that" — (かつて)その場所にいた、それを経験した、という意味です。

"been there, done that"は定着している言い回しのようです。

As President Donald Trump looks at ordering US Navy ships to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, for naval analysts and historians, there’s a distinct feeling of “been there, done that.”

Almost 40 years ago, US Navy warships were facing the same enemy they’d be facing now, the navy and the sea forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The so-called Tanker War of the late 1980s saw some of the same weapons and problems a US escort force would face today, and provides lessons on how, in war, things can go wrong quickly in unexpected ways – with deadly consequences.

Have a great day.

Two employees who refused to serve a man and his wife because he was wearing a hoodie with President Trump’s name on it were fired after a video of the heated encounter went viral.

Erika Lindemyer and her husband, Jake, were forced out of a Smoothie King franchise location in Ann Arbor, Michigan, following a fiery clash with two young female workers on Sunday.

“We were just wanting a smoothie and you literally looked at us and I asked you if everything was OK and you said ‘We don’t feel comfortable serving you’ because of my husband’s hoodie. That is discrimination,” Erika spat.

“Okay, well, have a great day,” the first employee said.
(Caitlin McCormack. 2 Smoothie King employees fired for refusing to serve customer in Trump hoodie. New York Post. March 3, 2026.)

Okay, well, have a great day

“You asked a question and [the other employee] gave you an answer. Have a great day. Have a great day. The door’s right there,” the second worker said.
(ibid.)

"Have a nice day"というのも同じような言い回しですが、ウィキペディアには以下のような説明が見られます。

According to some journalists and scholars, its repetitious and dutiful usage has resulted in the phrase developing secondary cultural connotations of, variously, impersonality, lack of interest, passive–aggressive behavior, sarcasm or as a definitive way to put an end to a conversation and dismiss the other party.
(Wikipedia)

Havea great day"(Have a nice day)というセリフはコンテクスト次第では、相手とのやり取りを断ち切る意図を滲ませた、とても嫌味で、失礼な表現になるということなのです。
