verklempt

Multiple co-hosts of “The View” agreed that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., had embarrassing gaffes on the world stage while in Germany for the Munich Security Conference.

One of the leading voices of the Democratic Party and a rumored 2028 presidential contender, Ocasio-Cortez has been ripped over several comments she made over the weekend — ranging from being confused about the location of Venezuela to stalling for nearly 20 seconds before offering that the U.S. should try to avoid reaching a clash with China over Taiwan.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg introduced the clip of Ocasio-Cortez’s stammering answer, noting that “The right is seizing on how she was a little verklempt coming out of the gate.”
(‘The View’ co-hosts agree that AOC had embarrassing gaffes at Munich Security Conference. New York Post. February 18, 2026.)

she was a little verklempt

Unable to speak because of emotion; choked up.

vote-a-rama

Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) was hospitalized Wednesday, likely putting Democrats down a vote during the vote-a-rama on the rescissions package that is expected to last into the evening.

Smith’s staff revealed on social media that the 67-year-old senator felt unwell while at the Capitol earlier Wednesday and subsequently went to George Washington University Hospital for treatment and is expected to be held for observation overnight.
(Al Weaver. Tina Smith hospitalized overnight for observation amid rescissions vote-a-rama. The Hill. July 16, 2025.)

an unusually large number of debates and votes that happen in one day on a single piece of legislation to which an unlimited number of amendments can be introduced, debated, and voted on

used chiefly in nonce words to denote an event, production, situation, etc., that amounts to or is suggestive of a prolonged or extravagant display or exhibition of a specified kind

diorama
cyclorama

The process known as "vote-arama" (or "vote-a-rama" or "vote-a-thon") developed out of unique procedures under the Congressional Budget Act of 1974. After debate time has expired on a budget resolution or reconciliation bill, senators can introduce an unlimited number of amendments, and each is voted on in succession. The Senate has held as many as 44 votes in a row in this process.

Although the origins of the term vote-arama remain vague—anecdotal evidence suggests that it was used by Senate staff as early as 1992—the term gained public recognition in 1996. In May of that year, in the midst of the budget reconciliation process, Republican Whip Trent Lott (R-MS) referred to the rapid vote process as a "vote-a-rama" during Senate debate. The label stuck and is commonly used today, both in Senate debate and in news coverage.

voodoo economics

The administration argues that tariffs will force foreign companies to invest in America to bypass the added costs, thus creating greater employment and making the U.S. more self-sufficient. Further, tariffs are estimated to raise an additional $600 billion a year, which will make America “rich again.”

Except how America will be “rich again” is impossible to understand, since more expensive products will presumably absorb most of this newfound wealth.

President George H. W. Bush at first rejected Ronald Reagan’s acceptance of “supply side thinking” as voodoo economics.” Trump’s passion for tariffs, one could say, depends on “black magic” to work, and the damage begins at home.
(Trump needs black magic for his voodoo economics to work. The Hill. April 7, 2025.)

Voodoo economics is a derogatory phrase first used during the 1980 presidential primaries by George H.W. Bush, then a candidate, to describe his opponent Ronald Reagan's proposals to reinvigorate the U.S. economy. Reagan won that election, and his economic policies came to be known as "Reaganomics."
(Voodoo Economics: Definition, History, and Validation. Investopedia. July 30, 2023.)

based on highly improbable suppositions : extremely implausible or unrealistic

vertiport

By 2028, the city of Orlando, Florida, could resemble scenes from “Blade Runner” and “The Fifth Element” — with traffic from flying cars buzzing overhead.

Orlando International Airport this week revealed it has been seeking partners who can help it develop launch and landing pads for “Jetsons”-esque flying cars called a “vertiport,” reported ArcaMax.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority will put out bids for the project next month, according to the outlet.
(Chris Harris. Jetsons’-like flying cars could be a reality in Orlando by 2028: report. New York Post. February 22, 2025.)

vertiport

vertical

President-Elect Donald J. Trump won the White House based partly on his promises to rein in immigration, with targeted policies that range from sending criminals to their home countries to more sweeping ones like mass deportations. During the campaign, Trump pledged to end the Temporary Protected Status that allows workers from select countries to come to the U.S. to work. If some of the larger deportation efforts, like rolling back TPS,  come to fruition, experts say that there will be ripple effects felt in most sectors of the economy, in particular construction, housing and agriculture.

Economists and labor specialists are most worried about the economic impact of policies that would deport workers already in the U.S., both documented and undocumented.

Staffing agencies were watching the election especially closely.

“The morning after the election, we sat down as a leadership team and explored what does this mean for talent availability?” said Jason Leverant, president and COO of the AtWork Group, a franchise-based national staffing agency. AtWork provides commercial staffing in immigrant-heavy verticals like warehouses, industrial, and agriculture in 39 states.
(Kevin Williams. What Trump’s mass deportation plan would mean for immigrant workers and the economy. CNBC. November 10 2024.)

immigrant-heavy verticals like warehouses, industrial, and agriculture

What Is a Vertical Market?
A vertical market refers to a specific industry or group of businesses that operate within a niche market, offering products and services tailored to a particular sector.
(Investopedia)

velvet glove

The Princess of Wales's "expertly-manoeuvred rise" since marrying into the Royal Family was hailed by a royal expert who described her as "steel in a velvet glove" just like another key royal was.

Princess Kate may now be one of the most recognisable women in the world but her assured figure is not the same as the one sported by the "once quiet and reserved" Kate Middleton back in the early days of her relationship with Prince William.
(Princess Kate dubbed 'steel in a velvet glove' as she's compared to key senior royal. Express. October 15, 2024.)

steel in a velvet glove

"iron hands in veltet glove"(また、iron fists in 〜)とも表現するようです。

This incident is in line with a greater trend we've seen in recent years: Venting on the internet has become the new way to complain. Instead of leaving a one-star Yelp review, or sharing a bad experience with family and friends, disgruntled customers can go on TikTok, go viral and go nuclear on a place − or person − they feel has wronged them.

Experts say this phenomenon is about more than an individual incident. It's about the urge to pick a side and a need to feel validated by others − even if they have no real connection to either party.

"Social media, especially TikTok, has democratized consumer reach," Chapman University adjunct communications professor Matthew Prince previously told USA TODAY. "Whether you have 200 followers, or 2 million, consumers' content is going further than it ever has before. That reach comes with power."

The internet, and especially TikTok in recent years, has taken venting to the next level. When we feel we've been given the short end of the stick, we seek out those who will tell us we're right, experts explain, and in viral posts, people are able to find thousands of people who will agree with them.
(David Oliver. Serena Williams, a Paris restaurant and the danger of online reviews in 2024. USA Today. August 6, 2024.)

vent one’s spleen

verboten

Some White House reporters have apparently been swiping everything from pillowcases to plates and glasses from Air Force One to keep as souvenirs, prompting their professional organization to warn them to knock it off.

In an off-the-record email sent to members of the White House Correspondents’ Association last month, the elite journalists were scolded for pilfering a variety of items emblazoned with the logo of President Biden’s official aircraft.

The association, headed up by NBC News Senior White House Correspondent and veteran journo Kelly O’Donnell, warned the scribes that removing such items from the presidential jet was verboten and reflected poorly on the press pool as a whole, the BBC said.
(Chris Nesi. Sticky-fingered White House reporters warned to stop pocketing items from Air Force One. New York Post.March 31, 2024.)

removing such items from the presidential jet was verboten

vilify

Taylor Swift will be vilified by millions of Americans and risk her own safety if she endorses Joe Biden in the 2024 election, a top talent agent has warned.

The Love Story singer’s fame has reached dizzying heights in the months since she began dating Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce, with pictures of their pitch-side kiss reverberating around the world last month.

While it is not out of the realms of possibility (Swift endorsed Mr Biden and Kamala Harris in 2020 and appeared to regret not vocalising her disdain for Donald Trump in 2016), Prof Jonathan Shalit has warned of the risks she faces by inserting herself into politics at such a “polarising” time.
(Susie Coen. Swift warned against further shows of public support for President Biden. The Telegraph. February 11, 2024.)

vilify

同じくラテン語vilisから来ている単語に、vile(ひどい、不快な、下劣な)、vilipend(貶す;"vilify"に同義)があります。

veritas

House GOP Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., slammed Harvard’s decision Tuesday to stand behind Harvard President Claudine Gay despite her testifying last week at a congressional hearing that calls on campus for the genocide of Jews require "context" before they would violate the school's code of conduct.

Taking a point of personal privilege at the top of the House Republican Conference press conference, Stefanik ripped the "complete moral failure" of Harvard's leadership, saying that in allowing Gay to remain as president, the "only update to the code of conduct" that the Ivy League school has made after the hearing, "is to allow a plagiarist as the president of Harvard."
(Daniel Wallace. Stefanik shreds Harvard over 'complete moral failure' after allowing Claudine Gay to remain president. Fox News. December 12, 2023.)

"As a Harvard graduate, I'm reminded of Harvard's motto, Veritas, which goes back – and it's older than the founding of our country, it goes back to the 1640s. In addition, the motto was Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae – Truth for Christ and the Church."

"Larry Summers, who was president of Harvard when I was an undergrad, talked about the meaning of Veritas is divine truth, moral truth. Let me be clear. Veritas does not depend on the context," Stefanik said. "This is a moral failure of Harvard's leadership and higher education leadership at the highest levels, and the only change they have made to their code of conduct, where they failed to condemn calls for genocide of the Jewish people, the only update to the code of conduct is to allow a plagiarist as the president of Harvard."
(ibid.)

vault

Elvis Govic describes pancreatic cancer as “the silent killer”.

“You’re not even aware that you’ve got it ... and if it goes too far, there’s no chance of surviving it.”

It vaulted from being the sixth-leading cause of cancer death in Australia to the third between 2001 and 2021. It now takes about 3400 Australian lives each year, behind bowel cancer and lung cancer.
(Aisha Dow. The ‘silent killer’ on the rise in Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald. September 24, 2023.)

It vaulted from being the sixth-leading cause of cancer death in Australia to the third

Advertising has vaulted the new perfume into first place.

This litany of Iranian activity is evidence, say experts, that after years as a cyber also-ran, Iran is morphing swiftly into a major threat in the rapidly evolving era of cyber-conflict. That shift is causing a growing recognition... (中略) that Iran has vaulted into the ranks of the world's top-10 offensive cyber-powers.
(Christian Science Monitor, 2014)

vaunt

The item proving a hit with McDonald’s customers in France this winter is not a new burger or chicken wrap, but a bright red, rubber container in which french fries are served.

The US-based multinational introduced the reusable packaging to comply with a new French law that bans fast food and casual dining outlets from using disposable packaging and cutlery for customers who eat in their restaurants.

The french fries containers are so popular that customers have started taking them home as souvenirs. President Emmanuel Macron helped drive the craze when he tweeted a photo of the McDonald’s packaging to vaunt his government’s initiative, which took effect in January.
(Leila Abbound. Macron versus McDonald’s: how France ditched disposable food packaging. Financial Times. February 19, 2023.)

vaunt

male validation

A Stanford professor has been criticized for writing 'offensive and disparaging' tweets describing female attorneys who represent men accused of assault as 'skirts' who are 'desperate to prove they are real lawyers'.

Michele Dauber, who is based in California, criticized a number of lawyers including Camille Vasquez, who played a key role in Johnny Depp's recent defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Following the case, in which a which a jury in Virginia found Ms Heard liable for three counts of defamation against Mr Depp, and him liable for one count against her, Ms Vasquez shot to international prominence.

While much of the attention given to the lawyer has been positive, she has also faced some negativity, including the tweets by Michele Dauber, which described the attorney as a 'pick me girl' - a phrase normally used to refer to women who crave male validation.
(Maria Chiorando. Stanford Law professor is criticised for calling Johnny Depp's attorney Camille Vasquez a 'pick me girl' in 'offensive' tweets about female lawyers who represent men accused of assault - claiming they 'suck up to male power'. Daily Mail. June 9, 2022.)

described the attorney as a 'pick me girl' - a phrase normally used to refer to women who crave male validation

to recognize, establish, or illustrate the worthiness or legitimacy of
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

the feeling of having recognized, confirmed, or established one's own worthiness or legitimacy

vigilante

Kyle Rittenhouse's acquittal on murder charges on Friday opened yet another front in America's longstanding fight over gun rights: Is it acceptable for a teenager to bring an assault-style rifle to a protest?

Conservatives hailed Rittenhouse as a hero for exercising his right to self-defense when he fatally shot two demonstrators and wounded a third who he said attacked him last year at a racial justice protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
(Joseph Ax. Hero or vigilante? Rittenhouse verdict reignites polarized U.S. gun debate. Reuters. November 19, 2021.)

Hero or vigilante?

Gun control advocates warned the jury's verdict could inspire a new wave of armed vigilantism, after Rittenhouse traveled in August 2020 from his Illinois home to Kenosha after demonstrations erupted following the police shooting of a Black man, Jacob Blake.

Rittenhouse's decision, at age 17, to roam the streets of Kenosha toting a weapon in the name of protecting private property from rioters struck a particular nerve about just how far gun rights should extend.
(ibid.)

The word may often be found in an attributive role, as in the phrases “vigilante justice,” or “vigilante group.” In this slightly broadened sense it carries the suggestion of the enforcement of laws without regard to due process or the general rule of law.

"it carries the suggestion of..."

― visit

Juul has agreed to pay $40m to the state of North Carolina to settle a lawsuit that accused the e-cigarette maker of marketing its products to minors.

The settlement, announced on Monday by the North Carolina attorney general, Josh Stein, is the first reached by the company with a state government. A trial was set to start in July.

The deal also includes restrictions on sales of products that appeal to minors and requires Juul to produce yearly reports demonstrating its compliance.

Stein told a news conference he began investigating Juul after “hearing from friends about the devastation that this product had visited on kids’ lives – addiction, depression, bad grades, switching schools, medical treatment and more”.
(Juul, accused of marketing to teens, settles vaping case for $40m. The Guardian. June 28, 2021.)

the devastation that this product had visited on kids’ lives – addiction, depression, bad grades, switching schools, medical treatment and more

vapor trail

contrail

Question: An old lady pointed at a jet contrail and told me it was causing the atmosphere to be poisoned. Is this true?

-- submitted by reader Thorval, Virginia

Answer: No, it is not true. Contrails are ice crystals formed by moisture in the atmosphere heated by a jet engine, then refrozen.

I have heard the conspiracy theories regarding contrails and they are all false.

Q: What is in the chemtrails?

- Bruce in U.S.A.

A: The term chemtrails is misleading. There are people that believe the white contrails seen behind jets at cruising altitude are made up of some kind of chemicals that the airplane is spraying. They are incorrect -- the white trail behind a jet is the condensation in the air having been heated by the engines and then frozen by the cold temperature. Variability in the level of moisture in the air determines when contrails are visible and when they do not form.

So when her health department announced it was expanding appointments, she armed herself with two phones — cellphone in one hand, landline in the other — and held her breath.

"vet" - その2 ― vetting

Twelve Army National Guard members have been removed from inauguration duty in Washington, DC, as part of the security vetting process initiated, in part, to ensure troops tasked with securing Wednesday's ceremony in the nation's capital do not have ties to extremist groups, the Chief of the National Guard Bureau said Tuesday.

The nation's capital is on edge ahead of President-elect Joe Biden's inauguration. While much of Washington has been shut down following the deadly riot at the US Capitol on January 6, defense officials have sought to reassure the public that the troops sent to protect the inauguration are being fully vetted.
(12 Army National Guard members removed from inauguration duty. CNN. January 19, 2021.)

virtue signaling

White House adviser and President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner came under heavy criticism after he said Monday that Black Americans have to want to help themselves in order for the president's policies to help them.

Kushner said on "Fox & Friends" that the president can help people in the Black community "break out of the problems that they're complaining about, but he can’t want them to be successful more than they want to be successful."

He also said that many people in the anti-police brutality and discrimination protests that followed the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis were "just virtue signaling" – a term for empty gestures of outrage or anguish on social media.

"They go on Instagram and cry, or they would, you know, put a slogan on their jersey or write something on a basketball court," Kushner said, dismissing the expressions of outrage and solidarity that many made after video surfaced of Floyd being pinned with a police officer's knee on his neck. "Quite frankly, that was doing more to polarize the country than it was to bring people forward. You solve problems with solutions."

Kushner's implication that Black Americans lack a drive to succeed and to address the problems facing their community drew criticism that he is blind to his own privilege and that his own success is attributable more to his family's wealth than his own efforts.
(William Cummings. Jared Kushner criticized after saying Black Americans need to 'want to be successful.' USA Today. October 26, 2020.)

"just virtue signaling"

a term for empty gestures of outrage or anguish on social media

In a normal year, the MLB Ballpark app was for use at, well, the ballpark. But this year, with stadium attendance reduced to scattered pods of fans or banned outright, Major League Baseball has added a vicarious layer to its app: augmented-reality lenses built on Snap Inc. technology.

The souped-up app has six lenses that users can choose from, for instance, to swing a bat superimposed into a video of themselves, or take selfies wearing virtual hats from this year’s World Series opponents, the Tampa Bay Rays and the Los Angeles Dodgers. (The teams are tied 1-1 at present.)
(Ann-Marie Alcántara. Snapchat’s Augmented-Reality Lenses Find Their Way to the Ballpark. Wall Street Journal. Oct. 22, 2020.)

One of the fundamental reasons we go into a movie theater is to hand over control to the screen. We sit in our seats, the lights darken, and we have a vicarious experience.
(Chicago Sun-Times, 1994)
