bread and circuses

Facing an uphill battle in the final weeks of an affordability-focused midterm election, President Donald Trump on Wednesday night made an audacious promise: Every adult American citizen will receive a $5,000 "dividend," but only if Republicans are victorious in November.

While extremely light on details, the proposal quickly drew heat from critics on both sides of the aisle, including some of Trump's own supporters. And it spurred questions of whether it would be illegal as a payment incentive to influence votes.

"I am hugely in favor of winning the midterms, and love much about this admin, but am strongly against bread and circus bribes," Palantir co-founder and Republican donor Joe Lonsdale said on X.
(Trump's $1 trillion-plus 'dividend' plan meets immediate bipartisan pushback. CNBC. September 10, 2026.)

am strongly against bread and circus bribes…

Offerings, such as benefits or entertainments, intended to placate discontent or distract attention from a policy or situation.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

brunette

President Donald Trump appeared to debut a darker hair color Friday, sparking widespread speculation online after stepping off Air Force One in New Jersey ahead of a weekend at his Bedminster golf club.

Known for his signature blond hairstyle, Trump was photographed arriving at Morristown Municipal Airport with what appeared to be a noticeably darker, more brunette look —prompting a flood of reactions across social media.

"Trump becoming a brunette was definitely not on my 2026 bingo card," one user wrote on X.
(Sophia Compton. Trump appears to debut darker hair, sparking online buzz. Fox News. September 6, 2026.)

blackball

The 38-year-old Kaepernick, who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl after the 2012 season, hasn’t played since the 2016 season finale, an exile that began not long after he started taking a knee during the national anthem to highlight social injustices.

“I’m not gonna support an organization that one, is actively blackballing me, but two, has targeted my brothers who have been protesting as part of this as well,” Kaepernick said.
(Colin Kaepernick says NFL is ‘actively blackballing me’ 10 years after kneeling controversy. New York Post. September 1, 2026.)

actively blackballing me

basket case

By the end of the summer, the UK will be on to its seventh prime minister in 10 years. There was a time when we used to make fun of the Italians for replacing their leaders every couple of years or so. Now they look like the model of stability. It is us who is the basket case.
(John Crace. The business secretary knows about jobs, and seems pretty sure Keir is out of one. The Guardian. June 21, 2026.)

It is us who is the basket case.

butt heads

The Alabama family had been traveling in Japan for a week by then. But travel frictions arose: Weston, a passionate naturalist, had butted heads with his mother over her use of ChatGPT – and the natural resources such AI requires – to navigate their journey. Needing some space, he decided to explore Kyoto on his own while the rest of the family visited a nearby temple, Higginbotham said.
(Alabama family pleads for return of son missing on family trip in Japan. CNN. June 4, 2026.)

Weston… had butted heads with his mother over…

bandy

With the deadlocked war in Iran about to enter its fourth month, loose comparisons with previous US quagmires in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam are bandied about. When the conflict began, warnings of another “forever war” seemed exaggerated.
(Simon Tisdall. An ever-expanding catastrophe over Iran is not inevitable. Trump can and must be stopped. The Guardian. May 23, 2026.)

baloney

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s plan for a city-owned grocery market in East Harlem’s La Marqueta has a deeper problem than the absurdity of spending $30 million to launch a mere 9,000-square-foot store that won’t open until 2029.

His claim that the neighborhood lacks cheaper food than the citywide average — the whole basis for dipping into tax revenue at everyone else’s expense — is 100% baloney.
(Steve Cuozzo. Mamdani’s $30M, NYC-run grocery store would compete with nearby supermarkets that are ALREADY affordable. New York Post. April 23, 2026.)

blather and spin

Another woman has alleged that Eric Swalwell raped her, adding to a growing list of misconduct allegations against the former Democratic lawmaker.

Speaking on Tuesday, Lonna Drewes said she had been reluctant to come forward with her allegations that Swalwell drugged and raped her in a hotel room in 2018 because of his "political power".

"These accusations are false, fabricated, and deeply offensive - a calculated and transparent political hit job," his attorney Sara Azari said.
(Madeline Halpert. Another woman accuses Swalwell of rape, saying he drugged her in 2018. BBC News. April 14, 2026.)

At a news conference on Tuesday, Drewes' attorney, Lisa Bloom, dismissed Swalwell's earlier public response to other women's accusations - in which he apologised to his wife while denying the allegations - as "blather and spin".
(ibid.)

blather and spin

But on this subject we get only a lot of blather and obfuscation from the people who have power, and nothing like a clear, consistent line of action…
(Washington Post, 2012)

Sometimes, there is such a mountain of partisan blather and endless analysis and deconstruction of polls by an army of self-anointed analysts…

both/and

The administration’s TikTok-style mash-up videos of missile strikes spliced into movie clips and video games — along with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s attack-style language at Pentagon press conferences — have gobsmacked those with a more traditional view of how a government should sound during a time of war. But this modern media strategy is achieving what the White House appears to prioritize: audience engagement.

“Over a four day period, the videos that we put out had over 3 billion impressions,” said a senior White House official, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about the administration’s communications strategy. “That blows away anything we’ve ever done in the second term.”

The effort is part of a “both/and” wartime communications strategy that, as is often the case with this White House, cares little about presidential precedent or polite sensibilities.
(Inside the White House plan to sell the Iran war online. Politico. March 18, 2026.)

part of a “both/and” wartime communications strategy

both/and strategy
both/and approach
both/and thinking

As a coach, I often observe how "either-or" thinking limits creativity and problem-solving, preventing clients from exploring alternative solutions or combining different approaches. For example, a leader may think they must choose between focusing on the deliverables line or employee engagement instead of exploring ways to address both.

On the other hand, "both-and" thinking involves an integrative approach, where leaders seek to find ways to incorporate multiple options or perspectives to get the work done while keeping the team motivated and engaged along the way. This approach challenges the leader to seek opportunities for greater flexibility, creativity and collaboration in the workplace.
(Angela C Hill. From Either-Or To Both-And: Binary Thinking In Leadership. Forbes. March 31, 2023.)

A second senior White House official who is also closely involved in the video-making effort described it as a collegial, creative endeavor. “We’re over here just grinding away on banger memes, dude,” said the person, also granted anonymity to speak candidly. “There’s an entertainment factor to what we do. But ultimately, it boils down to the fact that no one has ever attempted to communicate with the American public this way before.”

The approach does have parallels to Trump’s political operation during the 2024 campaign. “Their entire strategy is rage bait and getting as many views as they can,” said Lauren Kapp, a Democratic digital strategist and the founder of Luminary Strategies. “They don’t care if the engagement is bad or good. They want these videos to be seen by as many young, impressionable young people as possible.”
(Politico)

breather

American Olympic figure skater Amber Glenn said Saturday she will limit her social media intake after she said she received "hate."

Glenn was critical of the Trump administration in a pre-Olympics press conference earlier in the week, saying it had been a "hard time" for her and members of the LGBT community. It was one of a handful of political remarks U.S. athletes made in the lead-up to the Winter Games.

"I did anticipate this but I am disappointed by it. I will be limiting my time on social media for my own wellbeing for now but I will never stop using my voice for what I believe in."
(Ryan Gaydos. American Olympian taking social media breather over 'hate' after Trump criticism. Fox News. February 8, 2026.)

American Olympian taking social media breather over 'hate'

backup

Feeling backed up?

While there are plenty of foods and some health conditions that cause constipation, certain supplements may also be to blame.

Just like any medications, vitamins and supplements can have side effects, like infrequent or painful bowel movements or changes in bowel habits.

And common supplements like iron, calcium and vitamin D can especially cause back-ups in your stomach and intestines.
(Rachel Sacks. Anti-poop pills: These 3 supplements can make you constipated. New York Post. February 8, 2026.)

back-up (back up)

An overflow or accumulation caused by clogging or by a stoppage: a backup in the sink; a backup of traffic at the drawbridge.

boondoggle

Gavin Newsom claims to be a big numbers guy. But the billions he has poured into California’s High-Speed Rail boondoggle just don’t add up.

The Post has obtained records and photographs from the state’s High-Speed Rail Authority showing where the $15 billion spent over the past decade across five Central Valley counties has gone.

The images of completed segments paint a bleak picture — unless your kink is concrete and desolation.
(Josh Koehn. Gavin Newsom’s High-Speed Fail: Shocking pictures reveal true story of $15 billion boondoggle. New York Post. February 4, 2026.)

An unnecessary or wasteful project or activity
(American Heritage Dictionary)

bastion

The crisis-hit Louvre museum in Paris was closed on Monday as workers began a strike to demand urgent renovations and staffing increases, and protested against a rise in ticket prices for most non-EU visitors, including British and American tourists.

All three trade unions at the Louvre – the CGT, Sud and CFDT – announced a rolling strike, saying: “Staff feel today like they are the last bastion before collapse.”
(‘The last bastion before collapse’ – Louvre museum closed as workers begin strike. The Guardian. December 15, 2025.)

Staff feel today like they are the last bastion before collapse.

(American Heritage Dictionary)

bubble

3. What is a bubble?
It’s what happens when the price people are willing to pay for a thing exceeds the value of the thing by some drastically untenable amount. It’s hard to give a more technical definition, because determining the correct value of anything is weirdly tricky beyond a certain point. Markets, for all that people pretend otherwise, are extremely susceptible to vibes.

Past bubbles have inflated around everything from tulips to Japanese real estate to the original wave of dot-com stocks in the early 2000s, but let’s run with a simpler example.
(Brian Phillips. How Catastrophic Is It If the AI Bubble Bursts? An FAQ. The Ringer. November 4, 2025.)

Economics
An increase in the price of a commodity, investment, or market that is not warranted by economic fundamentals and is usually caused by ongoing investment or speculation in the expectation that the price will increase further.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

"South Sea Bubble"、

bazooka

The announcement detailed sweeping new curbs on its rare earth exports, in a move that tightens Beijing's grip on the global supply of the critical minerals - and reminded Donald Trump just how much leverage China holds in the trade war.

China has a near-monopoly in the processing of rare earths - crucial for the production of everything from smartphones to fighter jets.

Under the new rules, foreign companies now need the Chinese government's approval to export products that contain even a tiny amount of rare earths and must declare their intended use.

In response, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose an additional 100% tariff on Chinese goods and put export controls on key software.

"This is China versus the world. They have pointed a bazooka at the supply chains and the industrial base of the entire free world, and we're not going to have it," said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
(Osmond Chia. China has found Trump's pain point - rare earths. BBC News. October 16, 2025.)

They have pointed a bazooka at the supply chains and the industrial base of the entire free world

beat reporter

Last month, Hegseth’s press office outlined new rules requiring beat reporters to sign a pledge not to obtain or use unauthorized material, even if the information is unclassified. Any journalist who doesn’t sign the pledge, Hegseth said, risks losing physical access to the Pentagon — something that has been a standard part of Washington-area news coverage for decades.
(Brian Stelter. Media outlets, including Fox News and CNN, refuse to sign Pentagon’s press access rules. CNN. October 14, 2025.)

beat reporter

The area regularly covered by a reporter, a police officer, or a sentry
(American Heritage Dictionary)

The reporting of a news item obtained ahead of one's competitors.
(ibid.)

bullion

The value of America’s gold hoard has topped $1 trillion for the first time as bullion smashes through record highs.

Prices surged above $3,824.50 an ounce on Monday, extending a 45% rally this year that has been fueled by safe-haven buying at a time of trade wars, geopolitical turmoil and fears of a government funding crisis.

The US Treasury holds the world’s largest stockpile — about 261.5 million ounces — locked away in vaults at Fort Knox, West Point, Denver and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
(Ariel Zilber. US gold reserves smash $1 trillion mark as precious metal hits fresh highs. New York Post. September 29, 2025.)

フランス語のbouillon(ブイヨン)、また英語boil(沸騰)と語源を同じくするということなのです。

bawdy

House Democrats are seeking a copy of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged 2003 "birthday book" that is said to include a "bawdy" letter signed by President Trump to the convicted sex offender.

The Democratic lawmakers requested a "complete, unredacted copy" of the alleged birthday book no later than Aug. 10. The  House Oversight Committee is pursuing its own inquiry into the Epstein saga and has separately issued a subpoena for Maxwell, the financier's imprisoned accomplice and former girlfriend, to sit for a deposition the following day, on Aug. 11.
(Lucia I Suarez Sang. House Democrats seek access to Jeffrey Epstein's "birthday book" said to include letter from Trump. CBS News. July 26, 2025.)

body count

body count

How many people someone has slept with is a personal thing that most don’t want to disclose — unless maybe you’re on a reality TV dating show like Love Island, where they created an entire challenge around the topic.

However, according to a Washington State University study, there is a simple way to determine if a person gets freaky in the sheets often — and it has to do with how much strength they have.

Lead researchers Caroline Smith and Ed Hagen analyzed data from 4,300 US participants. They found that people — both men and women — with upper body strength reportedly have a high number of sexual partners.
(Fabiana Buontempo. This is an easy way to figure out if someone has a high ‘body count’, study says. New York Post. June 26, 2025.)

bile

ABC News has suspended its senior national correspondent after he described top White House aide Stephen Miller as “richly endowed with the capacity for hatred” on social media.

In a now deleted post, Terry Moran, who recently conducted an interview with Donald Trump, said that the president and his deputy chief of staff, Miller, were both “world-class” haters.

According to a screenshot of the post, Moran said that Miller was not the brains behind Trumpism and his ability to translate the movement’s “impulses” into policy was “not brains. It’s bile.”
(Edward Helmore. ABC News suspends journalist after calling Trump and adviser ‘world-class’ haters. The Guardian. June 8, 2025.)

“not brains. It’s bile.”
