diesel

The oil industry has warned a diesel export ban will backfire and exacerbate the global fuel crisis as President Donald Trump weighs restrictions.

Trump appeared to back an export ban earlier this week, as he faces mounting political pressure to tackle rising fuel prices ahead of the midterm elections in November.

“I’ve said let’s not send out the diesel. We make a lot of diesel,” Trump told reporters Tuesday on the sidelines of the annual United Nations General Assembly. “I’ve called for it within my people. I’ve been talking about it.”
(Spencer Kimball. Oil industry warns a diesel export ban will raise fuel prices as Trump weighs restrictions. CNBC. September 23, 2026.)

Rudolph Diesel (1858-1913)

algorithm

Australian social media users would be given a choice to opt out of algorithms under proposed laws announced by the government Tuesday that would let users have more control over what they see on their social media feeds.

"We'll require social media platforms to provide user empowerment tools that give people over the age of 16 genuine and enduring choice about what they see in their feeds," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters in Canberra.
(Australian social media users to be offered choice to opt out of algorithms. NPR. September 8, 2026.)

algorism

Muhammad ibn-Musa al-Khwarizmi (780?-850?)

その意味合いはMerriam-Webster Dictionary(オンライン版)の定義、

a hidden system used by an online platform (such as a social media, streaming, or retail site) to curate content for each user based on the user's behavior, profile, etc.

Schrodinger's ~

Iran talks are on, or off, or somewhere in the middle.

It’s a familiar pattern at this point, which goes like this: The White House threatens strikes on Iran, backs down in the eleventh hour in the name of a coming deal and then grumbles over the collapse of the aforementioned agreement — leading back to the threat of military escalation.
(Schrödinger’s Iran talks. Politico. August 3, 2026.)

NATO is asking whether the United States under Donald Trump is still reliable. The answer is simultaneously: yes, no, maybe.

Schrödinger’s cat is the best-known image of indeterminacy: inside the closed box, the cat is both alive and dead. NATO now faces a similar ambiguity. Is the United States still reliable? Under Donald Trump, the most honest answer is simultaneously: yes, no, maybe.
(Schrödinger’s Trump. European Policy Center. Jun 11, 2026.)

Meanwhile, the mackerel are out there in their billions. Swarming towards the coast. Simultaneously endangered and self-evidently not. It was never the cats; these are Schrödinger’s fish.

Uzi

A father-son duo peddled illegal guns ranging from a lilac-colored revolver to fully automatic Uzi through an illicit “Iron Pipeline” from Georgia to New York City, authorities said Monday.

The high-powered weaponry — which also included three “switches” that can turn a semi-auto handgun into a “fully operational machine pistol” — was seized in a sting, according to NYPD officials.
(Greg Carlton. Father-son duo peddled guns — including lilac revolver and Uzi — in illicit ‘Iron Pipeline’: NYC cops. New York Post. June 22, 2026.)

fully automatic Uzi

fugazi

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nabbed hundreds of knockoff watches, glasses and headwear in Ohio last week.

Gold and silver watches and hats bearing the distinctive-looking Coach and Gucci patterns were among the 111 items seized from parcels entering the US at the Port of Cincinnati.

Most counterfeit goods are sold online, with over 90% of all seizures taking place in international mail environments. The rise in encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram have increased sales, allowing fugazi items to be shipped straight to people’s doors.
(Emily Goodin. Border agents seize dozens of counterfeit watches, sunglasses — potentially worth up to $20M. New York Post. June 11, 2026.)

fugazi

fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in (a body bag)

Thucydides trap

In his opening remarks to Trump at the bilateral meeting, Xi mentioned the Thucydides Trap.

It's a political term popularised by American scholar Graham Allison that has been used to describe the US-China relationship.

Referencing the ancient Greek historian Thucydides, who wrote about the war between Athens and Sparta, the term describes a situation where an established country becomes anxious about the rise of a developing power, leading to rivalry and eventually conflict.

In recent years the Chinese government has latched onto this analogy, with Xi himself invoking it when urging for co-operation with the US.

When Xi told Trump on this trip to "overcome the Thucydides Trap", he was essentially appealing to the US leader not to fear China's rise but instead, as he said later, become "partners not rivals", according to our Asia Digital Reporter Tessa Wong.
(Robert Greenall. What to know as Trump visits Xi in China. BBC News. May 14, 2026.)

"Thucydides trap"

Coined by political scientist Graham Allison — first in a 2012 Financial Times article and later developed in his 2017 book “Destined for War” — the phrase refers to a line from the ancient Greek historian Thucydides, who wrote in his “History of the Peloponnesian War,” “It was the rise of Athens and the fear that this instilled in Sparta that made war inevitable.”

Kegel

On TikTok, a pelvic floor exercise long popular with women is being repackaged as a fix for erectile dysfunction (ED) in young men, with influencers promising stronger, longer-lasting results between the sheets.

“[This] is one of the most common and consequential misconceptions I see,” Dr. Justin Houman, a urologist with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, told The Post.

The move? Kegels.

Originally developed to help women treat urinary incontinence after pregnancy and childbirth, Kegels are now increasingly used by men to strengthen pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder and bowel.
(McKenzie Beard. Men are doing a popular vaginal exercise for erectile dysfunction — and it’s making it worse. New York Post. April 2, 2026.)

Any of various exercises involving controlled contraction and release of the muscles at the base of the pelvis, used especially as a treatment for urinary incontinence.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

Luddite

Frustrated parents who are fed up with their young teens’ excessive screen time are turning to drastic measures, like signing them up for curated digital detox programs at camps like Reset Summer Camp.

This isn’t your ordinary summer camp. This time away from home for minors aged 13 to 18 is meant to help children with everything from social anxiety to depression to gaming and social media addiction.

While there, enrolled kids spend four weeks in college dorms, sans tech devices, after they check them in at the door upon arrival.

Ringing up at just under $8,000 per camper, the temporary “Luddite” lifestyle doesn’t come cheap, but the outcome, a happy life without the reliance on screens, seems to be worth it for parents.
(Allison Lax. Parents frantic to shield teens from ‘addictive’ screen time are turning to ‘detox’ camps and even other tech. New York Post. November 17, 2025.)

the temporary “Luddite” lifestyle

Lazarus effect

A woman declared dead by the coroner after her husband found her unresponsive in bed was being placed in a coffin when morticians made a startling discovery — she was very much alive.

The horrifying tale from the Czech Republic unfolded when an 88-year-old woman, who was thought to be dead, showed signs of life in her coffin.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it's known as the Lazarus Effect.

Named after the biblical story of Jesus raising Lazarus back from the dead, this usually occurs after CPR ends.
(Nick Butler. Woman declared dead by coroner, moved to coffin, turns out to be alive
A woman in the Czech Republic showed signs of life in her coffin after paramedics and coroners confirmed her death. Fox News. June 3, 2025.)

Lazarus Effect

"Lazarus effect"

autoresuscitation

spoonerism

spoonerism

well-oiled bicycle

を、

well-boiled icicle

Heimlich maneuver

"Heimlich maneuver"

"Heimlich maneuver"

An 8-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of his choking friend in the elementary school cafeteria.

Thomas Conley, a second-grade student at Porter Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona, noticed that his friend was choking on a grape and sprang into action, according to local reports.

Conley immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver — also known as abdominal thrusts — on Isaiah Rodriguez, which dislodged the grape.
(Melissa Rudy. Boy, 8, saves choking friend with Heimlich maneuver. Fox News. December 23, 2024.)

Introduced by Dr. Henry Heimlich in 1975, the Heimlich maneuver is recommended by the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care as the first line of treatment for airway obstruction.
(ibid.)

"Heimlich maneuver"

Let’s be honest — people have a habit of bringing their phones to the bathroom. I’ve been guilty of it myself, and chances are that someone is on the toilet reading this article right now. A three-minute trip to the loo can easily turn into 15 minutes of reading, scrolling and posting.

It might seem a harmless way to pass the time when you’re going number two. However, experts warn that what they call prolonged sitting on the toilet can harm your health.

People should spend an average of five to 10 minutes on the john, according to Dr. Farah Monzur, an assistant professor of medicine and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Stony Brook Medicine on Long Island, New York.
(Jocelyn Solis-Moreira. Don’t sit on the toilet for more than 10 minutes, doctors warn. CNN.  November12, 2024.)

john

johnny

Johnny house

From the cousin John men and women said they had to visit when they absented themselves.

zany

Never use a hotel iron to press your clothes, one expert traveler warned — you don’t know where it’s been.

Gilbert Ott, founder of the travel site godsavethepoints.com, revealed that hotel guests have been known to use the complimentary iron in their room for some zany, off-label reasons.

“It’s worth inspecting the hotel iron, or testing it on a non-external-facing garment before trusting your soon-to-be crisp white shirt,” he told The Daily Mail.

“Why? Pilots and others notoriously use irons to reheat pizza and other food during layovers,” Ott said.
(Alexandra Klausner. Here’s why you should never use a hotel iron, according to a travel expert. New York Post. January 17, 2024.)

for some zany, off-label reasons

John Doe

A U.S. court is expected on Wednesday to start revealing the names of dozens of people with ties to deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein, a move that could unveil new details about his sex trafficking.

Epstein socialized with Wall Street titans, royalty and celebrities before pleading guilty to soliciting prostitution from a minor in 2008. He took his own life in 2019 at age 66 while awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges.
(Names of Jeffrey Epstein's associates set to be released. Reuters. January 4, 2024.)

John Doe

"John Doe" list in the sex trafficking case of the late Jeffrey Epstein about to go public
(CBS News. January 4, 2024.)

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Arizona, Cayla Farris used profanity and threatened flight crew members while traveling from Phoenix to Hawaii on Feb. 13, 2022. Prosecutors say her behavior prevented flight attendants from carrying out their duties and the captain decided to return to Phoenix.

Experts say airplanes can be petri dishes for bad behavior as travelers are crammed together and often stressed about getting where they need to be. Federal law requires passengers to obey crewmember instructions.
(Zach Wichter. An expensive flight: American Airlines passenger fined almost $40,000 for being disruptive. USA Today. November 15, 2023.)

… airplanes can be petri dishes for bad behavior

something (such as a place or situation) that fosters development

bowser

The survey found that five per cent of Australians had stolen items at the supermarket self-checkout, while four per cent had lied about what they had scanned - telling the computer it was weighing onions rather than avocados, for example.

The average Australian spends $740 a month on groceries – increasing by seven per cent in the past 12 months, according to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker.

Finder's research showed four per cent of Aussies had driven away from the bowser without paying for fuel in the past year, while two per cent had left a cafe or restaurant without paying.
(Adam Vidler. Aussies stealing from supermarkets, servos, new research shows. 9news.com.au. October 23, 2023.)

four per cent of Aussies had driven away from the bowser without paying for fuel

a pump usually at a service station for dispensing liquid fuels, especially gasoline
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Sylvanus Freelove Bowser(1854 - 1938)

agamograph

X(書くのも読むのもまだ慣れませんが、旧Twitter)が本社オフィスの備品などをオークションに出しているというニュースを読みました。

A 34-foot agamograph

An agamograph (for those unaware) is a type of image that changes depending on what angle you view it from. In this example, the piece shifts from a wide-eyed emoji, to the question “What’s Happening?” — something I’m sure the remaining legacy employees at X have been asking themselves for months.
(Jesse Weatherbed. Here are the funniest things being auctioned off at Twitter HQ. The Verge. August 10, 2023.)

Orwellian

A federal judge in Louisiana ruled Tuesday that the Biden administration likely violated the First Amendment by censoring unfavorable views on social media over the course of the coronavirus pandemic, calling the efforts “Orwellian.”

U.S. District Court Judge Terry Doughty also issued a sweeping preliminary injunction barring numerous federal officials and agencies — including Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre and all employees of the Justice Department and FBI — from having any contact with social media firms for the purpose of discouraging or removing First Amendment-protected speech.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, a period perhaps best characterized by widespread doubt and uncertainty, the United States Government seems to have assumed a role similar to an Orwellian ‘Ministry of Truth,’” Doughty wrote in his 155-page opinion, which was released as most federal courts were closed for the Independence Day holiday.
(Judge limits Biden administration contact with social media firms. Politico. July 4, 2023.)

Orwellian

American Heritage Dictionary

Of, relating to, or evocative of the works of George Orwell, especially the satirical novel 1984, which depicts a futuristic totalitarian state.

jack up

Aussie’s insane bill shocks as prices almost double

In ten short days, thousands will see an unavoidable expense jacked by up to 83 per cent.

Customers say they have been left in shock after being told that they'll be hit with a massive hike to their electricity rates next month - with some facing increases of up to 83 per cent.
(Emily McPherson. 'It's insane': Aussies share power price shock with some bills to surge by up to 83 per cent. 9News. June 20, 2023.)

an unavoidable expense jacked by up to 83 per cent

jack up

(Online Etymology Dictionary)

Panglossian

Gradually and then suddenly, technologies driven by artificial intelligence (AI) are taking hold in major economies. Predictions of the impact of AI range from the Panglossian — an era of rising productivity leading to higher living standards — to the dire, the end of human civilisation. Even if humanity is safe for now, the ranks of white-collar professionals, some experts say, could be decimated by the extensive use of AI.
(ET Conversations with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman: Rebooting the future with AI. The Economic Times. May 19, 2023.)

Panglossian

Predictions of the impact of AI range from the Panglossian… to the dire
