hydronym

Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s ludicrous decision to sign an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

However, Carney used language that might go over Trump’s head.

Carney’s post doesn’t directly attack Trump. Instead, the prime minister pointed to the history, including the fact that Lake Ontario got its name before the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America, dating back 400 years.

He also used a word that, based on other “big words” that the president has had to tackle, Trump might not even understand.

“We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms,” Carney said.
(Amir Ali. Mark Carney responds to 'Lake America' using words Trump may not understand. Daily Hive. August 28, 2026.)

A hydronym is the proper name for a body of water like a lake, ocean, or river.
(ibid.)

hyperscaler

The race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure at a trillion-dollar annual clip is eroding the free cash flow and increasing balance-sheet risk at so-called hyperscalers, warned Moody’s Ratings.

In a research note released this week, Moody’s said that the spending surge is forcing even the world’s most cash-rich corporations like Alphabet and Microsoft to lean heavily on debt, stock sales and off-balance-sheet moves to fund their AI ambitions.

“Previously, these companies relied on asset-light structures centered on software, intellectual property, and scalable cloud services that required modest capital investment,” Moody’s said in the Wednesday note. “The transition from asset-light to asset-heavy models requires unprecedented levels of investment and capital raising.”
(Hugh Son. Moody’s says ‘unprecedented’ AI spending threatens credit quality of Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and others. CNBC. July 24, 2026.)

It may be difficult to remember, but there was a time when a company’s entire data center might have been run from a lone server within an office cabinet.

Then came hypervisors, whose use as abstraction layers let apps in virtual machines (VMs) be relocated from one physical hardware installation to another. This was a key moment in the rise of hyperscale data centers.

Usually, the original, on-premises data centers of old simply cannot handle the volume of data now generated, especially that created by hyperscaled applications.

Hyperscale data centers (also called hyperscalers) occupy considerably larger physical space than traditional on-premises data centers, which have tended to be sized somewhere in the 10,000-square-foot range.
(What is hyperscale? ibm.com

high-tail it

high-tail it

Stores along the busy stretch of Chinatown have been here before. Occasional police raids force illicit merchants to high-tail it when the cops show up to confiscate their ill-gotten goods — only for the unscrupulous sidewalk peddlers to set up shop again when the coast is clear.
(NYPD raids illegal NYC vendors again — but Canal Street businesses say it won’t change a thing. New York Post. July 12, 2026.)

hack

left-wing hack

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to answer how Immigration and Customs Enforcement under Donald Trump’s administration is doing “everything correctly” after the killing of Renee Good and the deaths of 32 people in ICE custody in 2025, the agency’s deadliest year in two decades.

Instead, she lashed out at the reporter who asked the question, labeled him a “left-wing hack” who is “pretending” to be a journalist, and “shamed” reporters in the room for what she called “crooked” views.

Leavitt — despite asking for the columnist’s opinion shared by a majority of voters who believe her killing was unjustified — immediately laid into him in a remarkable streak of insults.

“Oh, OK, so you’re a biased reporter with a left-wing opinion, because you’re a left-wing hack, you’re not a reporter, you’re posing in this room as a journalist, and it’s so clear by the premise of your question,” Leavitt said.
(Alex Woodward. Karoline Leavitt labels reporter a ‘hack’ as she blows up over questions on ICE and Trump’s election threat. The Independent. January 15, 2026.)

hack

hit piece

The White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles, delivered a series of unusually candid and at times unflattering assessments of President Donald Trump, his second-term agenda and some of his closest allies in a series of wide-ranging interviews with Vanity Fair published Tuesday.

Across more than 10 interviews, Wiles spoke frankly about working for Trump, saying the president “has an alcoholic’s personality,” despite being known as a teetotaler. She acknowledged the president’s appetite for revenge, conceding many of his second-term actions were driven by a desire for retribution. Wiles suggested Trump was pursuing regime change in Venezuela through his boat-bombing campaign, contradicting official justifications for the strikes. And she described several controversial areas where the president ignored her advice, including on deportations and pardons.

The comments, made in conversations over the past year with author Chris Whipple, are striking both in candor and topic. Wiles — who claimed Tuesday that her words were taken out of context in a “hit piece” — is known inside the White House as a careful operator with few internal detractors, unlike the men who held the job in Trump’s first term.
(Trump chief of staff Susie Wiles says president ‘has an alcoholic’s personality’ and much more in candid interviews. CNN. December 16, 2025.)

disingenuously framed hit piece

White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles is pushing back against a Vanity Fair profile of her, calling it a “disingenuously framed hit piece.” NBC News White House Correspondent Monica Alba reports on the wide-ranging article where Wiles speaks candidly about President Trump and top cabinet members.
(WH Chief of Staff Susie Wiles pushes back on Vanity Fair 'hit piece'. NBC News. December 17, 2025.)

A “hit piece” is commonly defined as an attempt to damage a reputation or turn public opinion against someone or something under the appearance or guise of objective reporting. The free dictionary defines it as “a very critical attack on someone or something” often involving “information that is biased, misleading, or completely false.”
(Jacob Hess. Perspective: Is it journalism or a ‘hit piece’? Deseret News. November 16, 2022.)

Vanity Fair

hangnail

hangnail

A small piece of dead skin at the side or the base of a fingernail that is partly detached from the rest of the skin.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

a bit of skin hanging loose at the side or root of a fingernail
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

headline

President Doanld Trump and several members of his Cabinet will speak at a memorial in Arizona this weekend to honor Charlie Kirk, the conservative political organizer killed in a shooting on Sept. 10.

Trump will headline the event on Sunday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona — which is home of the Arizona Cardinals football team — alongside Vice President JD Vance, a longtime friend of Kirk’s who hosted his podcast on Monday to honor his legacy, and Kirk’s widow Erika Kirk.
(Jacob Wendler. Trump, Vance to headline Charlie Kirk memorial. Politico. September 17, 2025.)

1. To supply (a page or passage) with a headline.

2.
a. To present or promote as a headliner: The Palace Theater headlines a magician.
b. To serve as the headliner of: He headlines the bill.

host

As AI services grow in popularity, a host of concerns are arising around their use for therapy, companionship and other emotional needs.
(OpenAI says it plans ChatGPT changes after lawsuit blamed chatbot for teen’s suicide. CNBC. August 26, 2025.)

a host of ~

host of issues
host of problems
host of questions
host of health problems

US fashion designer Willy Chavarria has apologised after a shoe he created in collaboration with Adidas Originals was criticised for "cultural appropriation".

The Oaxaca Slip-On was inspired by traditional leather sandals known as huaraches made by Indigenous artisans in Mexico.

The Mexican president was among those who spoke out against the footwear, which was reportedly made in China without consultation or credit to the communities who originated the design.
(Jennifer Meierhans. Adidas designer sorry for shoes 'appropriated' from Mexico. BBC News. August 11, 2025.)

headfake

headfake

President Trump told the world last Thursday that he would decide "within the next two weeks" whether to strike Iran.

48 hours later, B-2 stealth bombers were whizzing through Iranian airspace — undetected — on a mission to cripple the Islamic Republic's nuclear program.

Why it matters: Trump remained open to aborting the mission if a diplomatic window emerged. But his public countdown doubled as a smokescreen — concealing a strike plan that was already in motion, according to multiple officials.

"It was a headfake," a Trump adviser told Axios. "He knew the media couldn't resist amplifying it. He knew the Iranians might think he was bluffing. Well, everyone was wrong."
("It was a headfake": Inside Trump's secret orders to strike Iran. Axios. June 23, 2025.)

Top U.S. military officials revealed the historic strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities utilized a massive deception effort, including the use of 'decoy' planes that allowed the actual bombers to go 'completely undetected.'
(Fighter jet headfake: U.S. sent B-2 bomber flights West as DECOY ahead of bombing Iran. Daily Mail. June 22, 2025.)

Global oil prices eased sharply in overnight trading, erasing big early gains as the continuing exchange of missiles between Israel and Iran largely mostly has avoided energy installations. Investors were hopeful for a peaceful conclusion to the four-day conflict.

homebody

homebody

In his February 2025 cover story for The Atlantic, journalist Derek Thompson dubbed our current era “the anti-social century.”

He isn’t wrong. According to our recent research, the U.S. is becoming a nation of homebodies.

Using data from the American Time Use Survey, we studied how people in the U.S. spent their time before, during and after the pandemic.
(America is becoming a nation of homebodies. The Conversation. March 10, 2025.)

heat

Authorities in the Dominican Republic are turning up the heat on the Iowa man who was the last person to see University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki before she went missing — grilling him into the early morning hours on Sunday.

Joshua Riibe, a senior at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota, was interrogated by Dominican Attorney General Yeni Berenice Reynoso and Navy Vice Admiral Agustin Morillo Rodriguez until nearly 3 a.m., the Spanish-language outlet Noticias SIN reported.
(Jorge Fitz-Gibbon. Authorities turn up the heat on ‘person of interest’ in Sudiksha Konanki case after revealing he’s ‘in custody’ in DR. New York Post. March 16, 2025.)

turning up the heat

the intensification of law-enforcement activity or investigation
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

hypertrichosis

A teenager has landed a spot in Guinness World Records for having the world’s hairiest face.

Lalit Patidar, an 18-year-old from India, was found to have 201.72 hairs per square centimeter, covering 95% of his face, according to Guinness.

The excessive hair growth is the result of a rare medical condition called hypertrichosis, informally known as "werewolf syndrome."
(Melissa Rudy. Teen with ‘werewolf syndrome’ breaks world record for hairiest face
Rare medical condition causes abnormal hair growth. Fox News. March 11, 2025.)

hypertrichosis

trichotillomania

habeas corpus

(Elephants are not people, US court rules.)

A bid to free five elephants from a Colorado zoo has been rejected after a court ruled elephants are not people.

An animal rights group argued Missy, Kimba, Lucky, LouLou and Jambo were effectively imprisoned at the zoo, and had filed to have them moved to an elephant sanctuary.

It tried to bring a habeas corpus claim on behalf of the animals - a legal process which allows a person to challenge their detention in court.

The Colorado Supreme Court said the matter boiled down to "whether an elephant is a person" and therefore had the same liberty rights as a human - ultimately deciding that they did not.
(Maia Davies. Elephants are not people, US court rules. BBC News. January 22, 2025.)

habeas corpus claim

hand-holding

Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently released a new report on the links between drinking alcohol and cancer. He doesn’t just want the public to know about this – he wants to mandate that warnings about cancer risk get slapped on alcohol packaging, much like with cigarettes.

Do we really need this kind of government hand-holding to let us know drinking could be harmful? I don’t know anyone who mistakes a beer or bourbon for a health drink (even though other research has shown red wine holds some health benefits).
(Ingrid Jacques. Nanny Biden's meddling on alcohol reminds us why we'll be better off with Trump | Opinion. USA Today. January 5, 2025.)

this kind of government hand-holding

Strong personal support and reassurance, especially to alleviate tension and anxiety.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

solicitous attention, support, or instruction (as in servicing clients)
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Children younger than 7 are admitted free with a hand-holding adult.

Like its main competitor, Dell, Quantex targets people who want a good, solid computer for a decent price, but who don't need a lot of handholding or truckloads of software.
(Newsweek, 1998)

Nanny Biden's meddling…

hippocampus

Taxi drivers could be less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease because of how they memorise routes, research suggests.

Scientists suspect that regularly driving from memory may boost brain power as a new study shows taxi drivers and ambulance drivers are much less likely to develop the form of dementia as they age.

Senior study author Professor Anupam Jena, a physician at Massachusetts General Hospital, said: "Our results highlight the possibility that neurological changes in the hippocampus or elsewhere among taxi and ambulance drivers may account for the lower rates of Alzheimer's disease.
(Martin Bagot. Ditch the Sat Navs as taxi drivers who memorised routes 'less likely to get Alzheimer’s'. The Mirror. December 16, 2024.)

British Medical Journal

hippocampus

Study lead author Dr Vishal Patel, a resident physician at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, said: "The same part of the brain that's involved in creating cognitive spatial maps - which we use to navigate the world around us - is also involved in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Heimlich maneuver

"Heimlich maneuver"

"Heimlich maneuver"

An 8-year-old boy is being hailed as a hero after saving the life of his choking friend in the elementary school cafeteria.

Thomas Conley, a second-grade student at Porter Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona, noticed that his friend was choking on a grape and sprang into action, according to local reports.

Conley immediately performed the Heimlich maneuver — also known as abdominal thrusts — on Isaiah Rodriguez, which dislodged the grape.
(Melissa Rudy. Boy, 8, saves choking friend with Heimlich maneuver. Fox News. December 23, 2024.)

Introduced by Dr. Henry Heimlich in 1975, the Heimlich maneuver is recommended by the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care as the first line of treatment for airway obstruction.
(ibid.)

"Heimlich maneuver"

hole-in-the-wall

These so-called "hole-in-the-wall" eateries are the places a friend will drag you to when you're visiting from out of town. Tourists rarely know about them while locals treasure them, and they're often incredibly easy to walk right by or to pass off with the assumption that their food is as modest as their exterior. Hole-in-the-wall restaurants that are well worth your hard-earned dollar aren't easy to suss out at face value; often, it takes the opinions of locals to sway one toward a lesser-known food stop. We gathered a list of the best hole-in-the-wall restaurants in each state, each picked for its humble exterior and stellar reviews. The next time you're in the following states, do yourself a favor and skip the fine dining for a homey, hole-in-the-wall restaurant experience.
(Emily Hunt. The Best Hole-In-The-Wall Restaurants In Every State. Yahoo! Life.  December 15, 2024.)

harp

MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough claimed on Friday’s Morning Joe that Democratic claims around toxic masculinity pushed male voters to Donald Trump.

Some of the analysis around the president-elect’s victory this week has focused on how Trump benefited from his improved performance with traditionally Democrat-supporting groups including Black and Latino men. Exit polling showed Trump picking up 47 percent of Latino men and doubling his standing with young Black men compared with four years ago.
(Dan Ladden-Hall. ‘Morning Joe’ Says Dems Harping on About Toxic Masculinity Cost Them Votes. Daily Beast. November 8, 2024.)

And Iger has to manage more than just Trump. His customers and employees can be highly sensitive to the company's interactions with politics, as we saw play out in Disney's two-year battle with Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida. During that fight, conservatives harped on the company, calling it too "woke," while liberals — including some Disney employees — felt the company wasn't forceful enough in standing up for diversity.
(Peter Kafka. Disney dodges the Trump question. Business Insider. November 15, 2024.)

honeymoon is over

Nate Cohn and his colleagues have published the first high-quality survey since KAMALA HARRIS replaced President JOE BIDEN on the ticket that suggests the VP’s hot streak may be coming to an end.

The Times poll shows DONALD TRUMP leading Harris by 1 point — 48 percent to 47 percent — among likely voters.

The Trump campaign is giddy about the NYT poll.

“The honeymoon is officially over,” Trump spokesperson JASON MILLER told Playbook this morning, “and Kamala Harris has been exposed as a Radical Left individual who owns the destruction of our economy and our border.”
(Playbook: Sobering new polls for Harris. Politico. September 8, 2024.)

The honeymoon is officially over…

An early harmonious period in a relationship
(American Heritage Dictionary)
