Reich

Reich

Donald Trump’s social media account on Monday shared a video referencing a “unified reich” in a post about how the country will change if he becomes president again.

His campaign said a staffer did not see the word “reich” before it was posted — an explanation President Joe Biden’s team blasted on Monday night.

In the video shared on Trump’s Truth Social account, while a narrator described “What happens after Donald Trump wins,” the screen twice flashed to a headline showing the words “Industrial strength significantly increased … driven by the creation of a unified reich.”

The German phrase “reich” refers to an empire, but also carries the connotation of Adolf Hitler’s “Third Reich,” another name for his Nazi regime.
(Natalie Allison. Trump’s social media account shares video referencing ‘unified reich’. Politico. May 20, 2024.)

"Reich"

Industrial strength significantly increased … driven by the creation of a unified reich.

verboten

Some White House reporters have apparently been swiping everything from pillowcases to plates and glasses from Air Force One to keep as souvenirs, prompting their professional organization to warn them to knock it off.

In an off-the-record email sent to members of the White House Correspondents’ Association last month, the elite journalists were scolded for pilfering a variety of items emblazoned with the logo of President Biden’s official aircraft.

The association, headed up by NBC News Senior White House Correspondent and veteran journo Kelly O’Donnell, warned the scribes that removing such items from the presidential jet was verboten and reflected poorly on the press pool as a whole, the BBC said.
(Chris Nesi. Sticky-fingered White House reporters warned to stop pocketing items from Air Force One. New York Post.March 31, 2024.)

removing such items from the presidential jet was verboten

sturm und drang

Listen, I’m sure there will be a lot of sturm und drang about what the whistleblower disclosures mean for Elon Musk’s Twitter deal, but I want to focus on something dumber and pettier: Jack Dorsey.

Twitter had serious vulnerabilities that Russian and Chinese governments might try to take advantage of, according to the whistleblower complaint from Peiter “Mudge” Zatko, the former Twitter security chief. (Zatko refers to himself as “Mudge” in the complaint, but I will be calling him Zatko because that’s his government name.) Zatko also alleges that Twitter had no incentive to count bots correctly. I can’t help but notice, though, that all of these allegations suggest that Dorsey was an incompetent leader.
(Elizabeth Lopatto. Sorry, Elon, but Jack Dorsey is still Twitter’s main character. The Verge. August 23, 2022.)

Sturm und Drang

The Sturm und Drang over tax cuts for the rich obscured the Democrats' massive capitulation on tax cuts for everyone else.
(Newsweek, 2010)

Perceptions of Owens can be misleading. His clothes are often described as goth, cultish, with a sturm und drang sense of turmoil — you can maybe blame those campy pentagrams and trailing robes.
(Alexander Fury. For Rick Owens, ‘commercial’ isn’t a dirty word. Financial Times. August 22, 2022.)

Of the first three seasons, this is the one dominated by the Sturm and Drang of Tony's domestic life, highlighted by the death of his beloved/hated mother; Uncle Junior's battle with cancer; daughter Meadow's leaving for college,…
(USA Today, 2002)

seltzer

seltzer

The drink of summer 2019 complies with just about every diet, befits all age groups, can be found in grocery stores across the United States (as has been the case for decades) and won’t get you drunk — unless, of course, it will.

It’s water. More specifically sparkling water, an umbrella term that encompasses club soda and seltzer. This beverage category is attracting millions of dollars in venture capital investment and changing the drinking habits of a people known for colonizing the world with corn-syrup-laden soda and watered-down beer.

“Sparkling water is one of these categories that has exploded, that has been exploding,” like so many bubbles of carbon dioxide, said David Henkes, a senior principal at Technomic, which tracks restaurant and food service trends.
(Sheila Marikar. The Seltzer Bubble. New York Times. July 13, 2019.)

putsch

Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s prime minister, signalled he could resign on Friday following bitter infighting that has split the ruling Liberal party and left the nation facing yet another leadership change.

As the party’s brutal civil war continued and thirteen ministers resigned, Mr Turnbull, a former investment banker and self-made millionaire, said he would resign if a majority of Liberal MPs demanded another leadership vote.

Stubbornly refusing to resign despite a collapse of support, Mr Turnbull blamed a group of rebel right-wing MPs and some media commentators for encouraging this week’s putsch.

“Australians will be rightly appalled by what they're witnessing in their nation's Parliament today and in the course of this week,” he said.
(Jonathan Pearlman. Australia PM Malcolm Turnbull clings to power amid leadership crisis. The Telegraph. August 23, 2018.)

putsch

doppelganger

Investigators are on the hunt for a 56-year-old Minnesota woman wanted for allegedly shooting her husband to death, then targeting and killing a Florida woman who looked like her.

She has crossed several states in the alleged killing spree that has spanned 1,500 miles and she hasn't been caught yet. She is expected to continue targeting other women who look like her to steal their identities, authorities said.
(Emily Shapiro. Woman on the run after allegedly killing husband, doppelganger in multi-state crime spree. ABC News. April 17, 2018.)

doppelganger

blitz

The extremists of the Islamic State appeared unstoppable after their sudden blitz through Iraq this summer, with its battle-hardened fighters continually raising their black flag over newly conquered areas.
(ISIS Wave of Might Is Turning Into Ripple. New York Times. November 5, 2014.)

November police blitz to target red-light runners

Ottawa and Gatineau police will be on the lookout this month for drivers who run red lights or make unsafe lane changes.
(Ottawa Citizen. November 5, 2014.)

Starting Nov. 3 and running through Dec. 14, the Ontario Ministry of Labour is sending inspectors to various industrial sector workplaces, including wood and metal fabrication, chemical and plastics, manufacturing and automotive plants.

The government is conducting the safety blitz in an effort to show a continued commitment to workplace health and safety through its Safe at Work Ontario enforcement initiative.
(Ontario launches safety blitz at industrial workplaces. Occupational Safety. November 3, 2014.)

Schadenfreude

BOSTON, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers find people are biologically responsive to taking pleasure in the pain of others -- Schadenfreude -- at least if they envy them.

Mina Cikara of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Susan Fiske of Princeton University measured the electrical activity of cheek muscles with an electromyogram, which captures the electrical activity of facial movements when an individual smiles.
Participants were shown photographs of individuals associated with different stereotypes: the elderly (pity), students or Americans (pride), drug addicts (disgust) and rich professionals (envy).

These images were then paired with everyday events such as: "Won five dollars" (positive) or "Got soaked by a taxi" (negative) or "Went to the bathroom" (neutral). Participants were asked how this would make them feel, and their facial movements were recorded.

"Because people don't like to report envy of Schadenfreude, this was the best method for gathering such responses. And, in this experiment, we were able to viscerally capture malicious glee," Fiske said. "We found that people did smile more in response to negative than positive events, but only for groups they envied."
(People biologically take pleasure in the pain of others. UPI. October 29, 2013.)

Schadenfreude

NEWARK, N.J. — Newark Mayor Cory Booker's communications director has resigned.

Anne Torres is stepping down a little more than a week after the mayor drew flak from fellow Democrats for criticizing President Barack Obama's campaign.

Booker was considered one of Obama's biggest supporters. In a May 20 appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" he described as "nauseating" attack ads against Bain Capital, the private equity firm once run by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
(Newark mayor's spokeswoman resigns week after flap. The Associated Press. May 29, 2012.)

Fleiger(飛行機)
abwehr(防衛)
Kanone(大砲)

Cartoon pandas, Teletubbies, Ronald McDonald. At first glance they don’t seem to have much in common beyond a certain childlike quality. But during a visit to Bangkok you may discover another trait these popular cultural icons now share: their resemblance to Adolf Hitler.

In the Thai capital’s latest outbreak of Nazi chic, pandas, Teletubbies and Ronald have metamorphosed into cutesy alter egos of the Führer, who seems to exert a childlike fascination over some young Thais.
(Tibor Krausz. Bangkok's 'Hitler chic' trend riles tourists, Israeli envoy. CNN. February 27, 2012.)

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A leader, especially one exercising the powers of a tyrant.

Maybach gets the axe Mercedes-Benz is set to kill off its top-end brand, report claims.

Mercedes-Benz will kill off its underperforming uber-luxury Maybach brand in 2013, a report claims. The article, published by US news site Autoweek, quotes a “high ranking Mercedes-Benz source” as saying that the brand thinks it better to “cut our losses with Maybach than to continue into an uncertain future with a brand that has failed to live up to original sales expectations”.
(Matt Campbell. Maybach gets the ax. The Sydney Morning Herald. November 28, 2011.)

Definition of ÜBER-
1: being a superlative example of its kind or class : super- <übernerd>
2: to an extreme or excessive degree : super- <übercool>
