sh - - oneself

東京五輪は注目の競泳種目が昨日で終わり、陸上競技種目が本格的にスタート、中盤を迎えたというところです。

競泳種目の最終日に行われた女子400メートルメドレーリレーで銅メダルを獲得したカナダに関する記事から引用します。

Sydney Pickrem may have swum for a spot on the podium in Sunday's 4×100 meter medley relay, but that doesn't mean she was calm, cool, and collected while doing so.

The 23-year-old Canadian admitted that she was freaking out in a hilarious post-swim interview with CBC.

"I was absolutely sh------ myself," Pickrem said on live television. "I'm not gonna try and sugar coat it."

Her teammates immediately cracked up at her candor.
(Meredith Cash. An Olympic medalist admitted on live TV that she was 'sh------ herself' while swimming her relay leg. Insider. August 1, 2021.)

取り上げた理由はお分かりと思いますが、伏字になっている部分が気になったからです。

伏字にするということは、そのままスペルアウトするのが憚られるからですが、sh-で始まる単語でそのまま使うのが憚られる単語と言えばひとつしかありません。

この記事を読むまで知りませんでしたが、

shit oneself

― f-bomb

"F-bomb"という単語をご存知でしょうか?

そのまま訳せば、エフ("F")爆弾、ということになりますが!?

Surprise – New Yorkers and other East Coast residents appear to drop F-bombs on Twitter more than their fellow twits in other countries, a new, real-time interactive map suggests.

Www.fbomb.co, created by brainy Carleton University junior Martin Gingras, can tell you where in the world F-bombs are being dropped – and what users are tweeting about.

Wednesday about 9:25 a.m., for example, the map shows a heavy concentration of F-bomb-loaded tweets emanating from the East Coast, marked on the map by cartoon images of tiny explosions and signs with a falling bomb on them.
(Bob Frederiks. Follow real-time F-bomb tweets from around the world. New York Post. November 6, 2013.)

Merriam Webster Dictionaryによりますと、

the word fuck ― used metaphorically as a euphemism

とあり、初出は1988年ということですから、随分前からある単語のようです。

"Fuck"という単語は使うのが憚られる単語で、four-letter wordとも言われますが、"f---"というように省略されて使われることもしばしばです。

"F-bomb"は省略形としても適しているのでしょう。

American Heritage Dictionaryによりますと、語源欄には、

On the model of A-BOMB, H-BOMB, etc.

Reporter suspended for calling Obama a (bleep)
(David Jackson. Reporter suspended for calling Obama a (bleep). USA Today. June 30, 2011.)

Watch out for that live mike.

Mark Halperin, an MSNBC political analyst, was suspended today for calling President Obama a vile name while assessing Wednesday's news conference on the network's Morning Joe program.

"I thought he was kind of a d--- yesterday," Halperin said, apparently thinking the word would be bleeped out.

It wasn't.
(ibid.)

動詞として用いられていますが、記事のタイトルを見ますと、問題の表現の代わりに“(bleep)”とされています。

言ってしまったものは回収のしようがありません。本人は無期限停職の憂き目にあったようです。

講義で扱うのはご法度? ― F-word

"F-word"という表現をご存知でしょうか?

オーストラリアの大学で、講義の題材に"F-word"を使ったために解雇されてしまった男性教師のニュースが話題を呼んでいます。

A BRITISH teacher sacked by a Sydney college for presenting a class to adult students on the use of the "f-word" could be compensated after having his termination ruled illegal by Fair Work Australia.

Luke Webster lost his job after it was discovered he taught students at Mercury Colleges a worksheet that contained the swear word in every sentence and asked them to discuss its different meanings and whether it was being used as a verb or a noun.

The college's then director of studies, Andrew Waters, said the "highly offensive" actions of Mr Webster, who taught adult students whose first language was not English, were gross misconduct not acceptable at the college "or any workplace in Australia".
(Ewin Hannan. F-word teacher's sacking 'unjust'. The Australian. April 13, 2011.)

American Heritage Dictionaryによりますと、

Four-letter word
n. Any of several short English words generally regarded as vulgar or obscene.
