The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Apple's 'Awe Droppings' fall close to the tree

Apple on Tuesday showed off its iPhone 17 lineup at a media event dubbed, "Awe Dropping," favoring timeworn self-adulation over a more literal pun like "Four Play."

The Cupertino-based computer biz announced four iPhone models – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air.

CEO Tim Cook lauded iPhone 17 Air, the newest member of the iPhone family, with the usual superlatives. "With the advancements made possible by Apple Silicon, we've been able to push the limits of iPhone design and innovation," he said. "And that breakthrough has led to something truly amazing."
(Thomas Calburn. Apple's 'Awe Droppings' fall close to the tree. The Register. September 9, 2025.)

よくよく調べてみると、"fall close to the tree"というのは、

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The apple never falls far from the tree."

a child usually has a similar character or similar qualities to his or her parents

An apple a day keeps doctor away.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

An Apple Watch a day keeps the doctor away.

Some users are astounded by their device’s ability to flag early signs of sickness before an ailment like COVID or a cold arises after the iOS 11 software update rolled out last month.

The startlingly accurate health assessment from the Apple Watch’s Vitals app — available on the Series 8 model and above — harnesses critical metrics taken over a week while a user is asleep, according to Mac Rumors.
(Alex Mitchell. Apple Watch Vitals app predicts colds, flu, COVID days before they hit, users claim. New York Post. October 15, 2024.)

An Apple Watch a day keeps the doctor away.

(An apple a day keeps the doctor away.)、という諺はイギリスのウェールズ地方で言われはじめたそうなのですが、その由来を辿ると、

Eat an apple on going to bed, And you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

go pear shaped

Heading off over the Christmas break? And maybe you’re thinking of renting out your main residence on the short-term rental market, such as Airbnb or some similar platform? That can be a great way to fund your holiday, but what if it all goes pear shaped?

Suppose you come back to wrecked appliances or even a trashed house, or what if your renter suffers an injury during their stay? Slips on a wet floor, falls down a set of stairs or gets an electrical shock from faulty wiring. Any of those scenarios could end up costing you a lot more than whatever you’ve earned from the rental.
(Michael Gebicki. Renting out your place while you’re away? Beware this trap. The Sydney Morning Herald. December 26, 2023.)

but what if it all goes pear shaped?

go wrong

apples and oranges

CBS broke the bombshell news that President Biden had stored a trove of government documents, including some two-dozen classified documents, in a private office in Washington that Biden used as part of his think tank relationship with the University of Pennsylvania, where he was an honorary professor from 2017 to 2019.
(James D Zirin. The Biden papers and the Mar-a-Lago documents: Apples and oranges? The Hill. January 11, 2023.)

Apples and oranges?

Collins Dictionary

two completely different things that it is useless to compare

From what is known publicly at this time, the Biden papers stand in sharp contrast in scale and importance to the Mar-a-Lago stash of documents. One is potentially criminal (Trump). And one is not criminal (Biden).

banana republic

But as the world watched flag-waving protesters push into the U.S. legislature, the shock was all the greater because such scenes would typically be more familiar from parliaments and presidential palaces in weak, nascent or non-democracies. Former President George W. Bush even compared Wednesday’s events in the U.S. to a “banana republic.”
(Marc Champion. ‘American Exceptionalism’ on the Line After Capitol Hill Stormed. Bloomberg. January 8, 2021.)

A small country that is economically dependent on a single export commodity, such as bananas, and is typically governed by a dictator or the armed forces.

make lemonade out of lemons

USA Today

Well, that was brutal. But believe it or not, 2020 wasn't all bad.

Halfway through this downer of a year, we published a list of 100 positive things that had happened so far, despite a raging worldwide pandemic, a country upended by a fight for racial equality, a divisive election and the loss of beloved celebrities.

Sadly, the second half of the year did not provide relief. In fact, COVID-19 cases skyrocketed, forcing Americans to make tough decisions around holiday gatherings. The fight for racial equality continued. More celebrities died.

It still does not feel like a moment to see the glass as half full or make lemonade out of lemons. But we tried.
(Good news in 2020? Yes, it's true! Here are 100 positive things that happened this year. USA Today. December 23, 2020.)

It still does not feel like a moment to see the glass as half full or make lemonade out of lemons

"make lemonade out of lemons"というのは、直訳すればレモンからレモネードを作る、となりますが、(酸っぱい)レモンも使いようによってはレモネードにして美味しくいただくことができる、即ち災いや不幸を転じて、物事をポジティブに捉える、状況を好転させる、というような意味で使われるフレーズだそうです。

apple of one's eye

When President-elect Joe Biden raises his right hand to take the oath of office on January 20, familiar faces will surround him on the steps of the US Capitol.

There will be Jill Biden, his wife of 43 years, who has been by his side throughout the most bitter and divisive US election campaign in living memory.

Then there will be 50-year-old Hunter, Biden’s only surviving son, a self-professed ex-cocaine and alcohol addict whose abandoned laptop containing top secret White House information almost derailed his father’s presidential bid.

But there will also be a less recognisable woman standing on the world’s stage.

Ashley Biden, the only child of Jill and Joe, will finally step into the limelight as America’s new ‘First Daughter’.

But behind the scenes there were troubling reports. ‘Ash is the apple of her daddy’s eye but she had many issues – addiction issues,’ one source revealed. They began to manifest themselves when she was reportedly arrested in 1999 for possession of marijuana. No conviction was recorded. Then, in 2002, she was allegedly arrested for obstructing a police officer.
(Caroline Graham. The new First Daughter: Ashley Biden has a troubled and racy past but - now settled with her plastic surgeon husband - she's set to take Washington by storm. Daily Mail. November 15, 2020.)

the apple of his daddy's eye

In a desert land he found him,
in a barren and howling waste.
He shielded him and cared for him;
he guarded him as the apple of his eye,
(Deutronomy 32:10)

For this is what the Lord Almighty says: “After the Glorious One has sent me against the nations that have plundered you — for whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye
(Zechariah 2:8)

To ask pears of an elm tree.

To ask pears of an elm tree.

lemon on the wounds

Thousands of former Toys R Us employees face an uncertain future after hundreds of stores were closed. But Geoffrey the Giraffe is back to work.

The mascot made a surprise appearance last week at one of the largest wholesale events in the toy industry. That was just days after court filings showed that the owners of Toys R Us might be pursuing a comeback, with the hedge fund that owns the company opting to hold onto the Toys R Us and Babies R Us brand names, Web domains and other assets — including Geoffrey.

To thousands of workers waiting for severance pay and even the chance to get their jobs back, Geoffrey’s fun-filled return felt more like “lemon on the wounds,” said Carrie Gleason, campaign manager for the worker advocacy group Rise Up Retail. Gleason called Geoffrey’s reemergence a “PR stunt” meant to boost the tarnished brand name should Toys R Us try to reopen stores as the holiday season gets underway.
(Geoffrey’s return infuriates laid off Toys R Us workers. The Mercury News. October 8, 2018.)

lemon on the wounds

How do you like them apples?

How do you like them apples?

Apple just became the first American public company to cross $1 trillion in value.

The iPhone maker achieved that big number on Thursday when the stock passed $207.04 a share. Its new all-time high is $208.38. Apple is now up more than 20% this year.
(Paul R La Monica. Apple reaches $1,000,000,000,000 value. CNN. August 2, 2018.)

How do you them apples?

ところで、なぜ“How do you like apples?”

A man is accused of selling an elderly woman a "lemon" car.

Corey Smart was arrested in Noxubee County and charged with exploiting a vulnerable person.

Noxubee County Sheriff Terry Grassaree says Smart sold the woman a 1996 Buick on May 18 for $2,500.
(Man Charged with Selling Elderly Woman "Lemon" car. WTVA. June 13, 2018.)

To most, Lemons are a versatile fruit that works great in Tea, helps freshen the air, and remove the occasional stain. To the auto industry, however, lemons are anything but useful.

A Lemon is a slang term referring to any car that was a piece of junk right off the assembly line. Was it bad parts? Poor engineering? Hasty assembly? It’s hard to pinpoint exactly, but it happens, and it’s expensive.
(Ken Manchester. Is your automobile a lemon -Part 1. Mint Hill Times. June 20, 2018.)

Their new car turned out to be a lemon.

Online Etymology Dictionary

the Peach State

Washington (CNN) — A new poll's findings raise the question if Hillary Clinton may have chosen the wrong state to try and flip.

The Democratic nominee sits just 1 point behind Donald Trump in Georgia but 5 points behind Trump in Arizona, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey.

Trump's edge in the Peach State is well within the poll's margin of error.
(Theodore Shcleifer. Poll: Trump, Clinton neck and neck in Georgia. CNN. November 3, 2016.)

the Peach State

"Gotham city"

go bananas

A troop of monkeys at an ape sanctuary have gone bananas after they were denied cut price fruit and vegetables, keepers say.

The primates apparently went ape after their keepers were stopped from buying waste food at 10 per cent of the retail price.

The owners of the Wales Ape and Monkey Sanctuary say supermarkets have stopped selling them waste fresh food before it is thrown away.

Jan Garen, who runs the sanctuary at Abercrave, near Swansea, said: "The agreement is vital for the sanctuary. The cut price veg really helps us in the costly task of keeping the animals fed."

She received no notice that the usual delivery of fruit, vegetables and other fresh food destined for the bins had been cancelled two months ago.
(Monkeys 'go bananas' as supermarket stops selling them cut-price food. The Telegraph. December 3, 2014.)

went ape
