macromastia

Women with larger breasts are all too familiar with the backaches and neck pain that can come with a bigger set of ta-tas.

But a new study published today links having disproportionately big breasts with an unexpected health issue — that, on its surface, isn’t connected to the chest at all.

“Many people think of enlarged breast tissue primarily as a cosmetic issue, but our findings suggest it may be associated with a broader range of women’s health concerns,” lead study author Kristyn Pocock said in a press release.

The researchers specifically looked at macromastia, a medical condition involving abnormally large breasts. In this case, “abnormally large” refers to breast size disproportionately larger that the person’s frame. There is no specific cup size.
(Rachel Sacks. Having disproportionately big boobs linked to a surprising health issue: study. September 22, 2026.)

maillot jaune

Emergency measures were implemented by the Tour de France organisers to combat the crushing heatwave that has settled on the race this year as the riders tackled stage four, at the end of which the cancer survivor Torstein Træen had stolen the yellow jersey and built an eight-minute lead on the four-time champion Tadej Pogacar.

“Most of all I am grateful to perform at the Tour,” Træen said after taking the maillot jaune. “It’s a pleasure to be here.”
(Jeremy Whittle. ‘Grateful’ Træen takes yellow jersey after Pedersen wins stage four amid 40C heat. The Guardian. July 7, 2026.)

matchup

Seattle’s World Cup committee is pushing forward with “Pride Match” celebrations this week despite backlash from Egypt and Iran, who have called for the cancellation of LGBTQ+ rights festivities around the game.

Last year, Seattle’s local organizing committee, which is separate from Fifa, made plans for 26 June to be a Pride-themed match coinciding with the city’s annual Pride weekend.

In December, Egypt and Iran were drawn to play each other on that date in Seattle, causing a swift firestorm and condemnation from the two countries.

Egypt’s football association appealed to Fifa, saying it “categorically rejects any activities promoting LGBTQ during the match,” warning the events could “provoke cultural and religious sensitivities among fans”. Iran’s football federation was quoted suggesting the Pride designation was an “irrational move that supports a certain group”.

In Iran, LGBTQ+ relationships are illegal, and Egypt has a history of prosecuting queer and trans people.
(Sam Levin. Seattle prepares for unlikely matchup as its World Cup Pride celebration: Egypt v Iran. The Guardian. June 25, 2026.)

The pairing of two people or things, as for athletic competition or for comparison.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

Memorundum of Understanding

Memorandum of Understanding

The United States on Wednesday released the official text of the memorandum of understanding reached over the weekend with Iran.

A senior US administration official read out the 14-point document, which spells out provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing certain financial restrictions on Iran and sets out expectations for addressing Iran’s nuclear program during future technical talks.

Titled the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the document was released after outcry that its text hadn’t been released publicly.
(US releases official agreement with Iran. Read the 14-point text. CNN. June 17, 2026.)

A short document outlining the terms of an agreement, especially as a draft leading to a formal, detailed contract: a memorandum of understanding.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

13 — After signing this MOU, and subject to the beginning of the implementation of paragraphs 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11 of this MOU, and the continuing implementation of these measures, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will start negotiations regarding the final deal exclusively on the other paragraphs.
(ibid.)

mukbang

Mayor Zohran Mamdani did a “mukbang”-style livestream video — munching on Taco Bell and Dunkin’ — to announce an $1.5 million settlement against franchises of the fast food giants Tuesday.

The democratic socialist mayor and his Department of Consumer and Worker Protections Commissioner Sam Levine detailed the deal while scarfing down Crunchwrap Supremes, Baja Blasts, Munchkins and a Mexican-style pizza during a YouTube livestream.

Mukbang is a popular YouTube format where hosts eat large amounts of food while discussing topics.
(Mamdani does ‘mukbang’-style video munching on Taco Bell, Dunkin’ to announce $1.5M fast food settlement. New York Post. March 24, 2026.)

Mukbang refers to a video shared on social media in which the creator films themselves eating large quantities of food, and often provides a review of the food as well. Mukbang can also refer to the genre of such videos.

The word comes from the Korean meokbang, which is a portmanteau of that language's words for “eating” (meok) and “broadcasting” (bang-song).

mandate

Japan’s conservative Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi swept to a landslide victory in a snap election on Sunday, marking a historic turnaround for her party, which had been hemorrhaging voter support in recent years — until she stepped to the helm.

It was a gamble to call a snap election. But Takaichi hoped to translate her own popularity into a stronger mandate for her Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) – which has been weakened in recent years by a scandal involving the misuse of political funds.
(Japan’s Takaichi secures historic supermajority in landslide election victory. CNN. February 9, 2026.)

Takaichi’s strong mandate could accelerate her plans to bolster Japan’s defenses, further angering Beijing, which has cast her as attempting to revive its militaristic past.
(Japanese PM Sanae Takaichi’s party sweeps to massive election victory to keep ‘Iron Lady’ in power. Reuters. February 8, 2026.)

Growing fragmentation within Starmer’s Labour Party—as well as a series of high-profile resignations at Downing Street—have tested the British leader’s mandate just 19 months after taking office.

mafioso

NBA(全米プロバスケットボール協会)のスター選手を囮に使った違法賭博が摘発されました。

The card-swindling technology NYC mafiosos allegedly used to cheat victims out of millions in a years-long poker scheme is readily available for sale online.

A simple Google search for “X-Ray poker table” quickly pulled up numerous companies producing devices that apparently employ the exact technology mobsters used in their sprawling con, which prosecutors unveiled in a federal indictment Thursday.
(Alex Oliveira. X-ray poker tables allegedly used by NYC mafia in NBA gambling scandal are readily available online. New York Post. October 23, 2025.)

mafiosos

mustache

Wrestling superstar Hulk Hogan, known for his signature horseshoe mustache, deep tan, blond hair and shirt-ripping showmanship, died Thursday, his manager confirmed. He was 71.

Manager Chris Volo told NBC Los Angeles that Hogan died at his home in Clearwater, Florida, surrounded by family.
(Hulk Hogan. Wrestling superstar dead at 71. NBC Los Angeles. July 24, 2025.)

horseshoe mustache

Hulk Hogan — the handle-bar-mustachioed marvel who turned professional wrestling into a mainstream spectacle and then transcended it — died on Thursday following a “serious medical issue” at his Florida home.
(Hulk Hogan, WWE legend, dead at 71. New York Post. July 24, 2025.)

miasma

miasma theory

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has upended medical research and public health in the U.S. in many ways. One of the ideas that could be influencing his overhaul of federal health agencies dates back to ancient Greece.

The miasma theory is one of the first ideas that civilization hatched to try to explain why people get sick.

This idea that, in essence, bad air caused illness was later championed by many others, including Florence Nightingale. It also led to some things that did help fight diseases, like cleaning up sewage.
(Rob Stein. Ancient miasma theory may help explain Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s vaccine moves. NPR. June 14, 2025.)

meat grinder

Russia’s invasion force is expected to suffer more than 1 million casualties by the summer as a result of the Ukraine war, with around 250,000 troops already confirmed dead, according to a new study.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), a Washington-based think tank, found that despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s boasts that he is winning the war, “Russia has largely failed to achieve its primary objectives and has suffered high costs.”

The invasion of Ukraine has effectively served as a meat grinder for Russia’s forces over the last three years, with the cost of life showing “Putin’s blatant disregard for his soldiers,” the analysts said.
(Ronny Reyes. Nearly 1 million Russian troops killed or injured in meat grinder Ukraine war: study. New York Post. June 4, 2025.)

meat grinder

something that reduces, pulverizes, or destroys: such as:
a devastating military action or stratagem
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

malapropism

malapropism

mondegreen

mondegreen

And laid him on the green

And Lady Mondegreen

magnanimous

Peter Navarro, a top trade adviser to Donald Trump, said he and Elon Musk are “great” after the president’s multi-billionaire business adviser publicly called him “a moron” who was “dumber than a sack of bricks”.

“I’ve been called worse,” Navarro said Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press in some of his most extensive remarks about the insults Musk directed at him days earlier. Praising Musk’s role in the so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge), Navarro added: “Everything’s fine with Elon.”

Navarro’s evident attempt to be magnanimous came after Musk criticized Trump’s proposals for global tariffs, which the president has since set at 10% on all countries, with some nations receiving higher trade levies.
(Michael Sainato. Trump adviser Peter Navarro says ‘we’re great’ after Elon Musk calls him ‘moron’. The Guardian. April 13, 2025.)

magnanimous

moolah

Sure, the ching-ching and the bling-bling are nice — but if you’re hoping mountains of moolah will make you happy, you may want to think twice.

It’s cautionary advice from Alyssa Mosley, who exclusively tells The Post that hitting jackpot came with a side of unexpected surprises.
(Asia Grace. I won the lottery — here’s how I learned that money won’t make you happy. New York Post. March 19, 2025.)

moolah

mass tourism

Thousands of anti-tourism activists protested in Spain's Palma de Mallorca on Sunday in the latest demonstration against a key industry for the Iberian nation.

Carrying makeshift models of planes and cruise ships, protesters walked through the streets of the capital of Mallorca with posters reading 'no to mass tourism' and 'stop private jets'.

Anti-tourism activists have staged a series of protests this year in Barcelona, and other popular holiday destinations like Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and the Canary Islands, saying visitors drive up housing costs and lead to residents being unable to afford to live in city centres.
(Horaci Garcia. Thousands protest in Spain's Mallorca against mass tourism. Reuters. July 22, 2024.)

overtourism

muck up

Ex-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that President Biden’s “bad” debate performance last week was not because of the debate prep — despite reported swipes by first family members that top aides worked him too hard.

Psaki, who left the White House in May 2022 to host her own show on MSNBC, said it was “absurd” for detractors to blame former chief of staff Ron Klain and senior adviser Anita Dunn for mucking things up during the 81-year-old’s week-long rehearsal at Camp David.
(Josh Christenson. Ex-White House press secretary Jen Psaki says Biden’s ‘bad’ debate performance was not because aides prepped him too hard. New York Post. July 1, 2024.)

muck things up

moped

Nearly 100 illegal scooters were seized from Queens streets and sidewalks in the latest clampdown on menacing mopeds, authorities said Thursday.

A four-day blitz by Queens District Attorney’s Office detectives and NYPD cops hauled in 99 unregistered and uninsured scooters, prosecutors said.

All the illegal mopeds, plus another five legit scooters, were parked illegally across Corona, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and beyond during the crackdown’s span starting June 4 and ending Tuesday, officials said.

trampcykel med motor och pedaler

menarche

Younger generations are getting their first periods earlier, and the length of time it takes to become regular is changing — which could point to later health problems, according to a new study.

“Among individuals born between 1950 and 2005, we found that younger generations were starting their first period (menarche) earlier, and the time it took for their periods to become regular also increased,” said lead study author Dr. Zifan Wang, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in an email.

“This is important because early menarche and irregular periods can signal physical and psychosocial problems later in life,” Wang said, “and these trends may contribute to the increase in adverse health outcomes and disparities in the US.”
(Madeline Holcombe. Kids are starting menstruation earlier, study shows. Here is what that means for their health. CNN. May 30, 2024.)

menarche

menstrual cycle
menopause

meritocracy

Harvard College will require applicants to submit standardized test scores once again, becoming the latest Ivy League school to reinstate the requirement after making the choice optional during the pandemic.

Dartmouth College, Yale and Brown universities announced similar changes in recent weeks, after officials cited data suggesting that SAT and ACT scores were the best predictors of students’ academic performance at their schools — and that making the tests optional could further disadvantage applicants from more challenging backgrounds.
(Susan Svrluga. Harvard will require test scores for admission again. The Washington Post. April 11, 2024.)

SAT、ACT

“Critics correctly note that standardized tests are not an unbiased measure of students’ qualifications, as students from higher-income families often have greater access to test prep and other resources,” Chetty said in a statement Thursday. “But the data reveal that other measures — recommendation letters, extracurriculars, essays — are even more prone to such biases. Considering standardized test scores is likely to make the admissions process at Harvard more meritocratic while increasing socioeconomic diversity.”
(ibid.)

meritocratic

myopia

Gen Zers are getting increasingly near-sighted from staring at their electronic devices all day and face a blindness epidemic if they continue to stay indoors while phone-addicted, a leading eye surgeon warns in a new report.

The rates of near-sightedness, or myopia, have been skyrocketing across the world with an increase of 46% in the UK over the last three decades, according to the Daily Mail.

In the US, a study from California says myopia has spiked a staggering 59% among teenagers.
(Yaron Steinbuch. Gen Zers face ‘blindness epidemic’ due to lack of sunlight from staring at phones: report. New York Post. March 4, 2024.)

myopia
