badonk

A brown bear known as 89 Backpack has won the annual Fat Bear Week competition, after what the US National Parks Service described as a "battle of size, skill, snack acquisition, and strategic loafing".

Backpack's wideness narrowly defeated a bear known only as 910, earning 103,344 votes to 910's 98,253 in the final round of the competition, which is run by the Katmai National Park in Alaska.

The National Parks Service thanked the 16 bears who "involuntarily participated" in the competition, now in its thirteenth year.

Backpack, who was described by one supporter as having both the "chonk and the badonk", will shortly enter hibernation, which can last up to six months.
(Helen Sullivan. 'Backpack' declared Alaska's Fat Bear Week winner. BBC News. September 30, 2026.)

the "chonk and the badonk"

ding-dong ditch

HOUSTON – A suspect has been detained after an 11-year-old boy was shot in the back and killed Saturday night while playing a prank known as “ding-dong ditch” in Houston’s Eastside.

The prank, sometimes called “doorbell ditch,” is a game where someone rings a doorbell or knocks and runs away before anyone answers.
(Suspect detained after 11-year-old shot in back during ‘ding-dong ditch’ prank dies. Click2Houston. August 31, 2025.)

gobble

The turkeys weren’t taking questions.

Moments after President Biden pardoned Chocolate and Chip, two hefty gobblers from a couple states south, they let out loud, ecstasy-filled gobbles that resounded throughout the Rose Garden ceremony — but declined to make further comment.
(Travis M Andrews. Biden pardons two turkeys, over possible objections from the first dog. Washington Post. November 21, 2022.)

gobbler

Biden appeared to be in jolly spirits Monday, aviator sunglasses on, unleashing yet another torrent of terrible jokes and groanworthy puns. Was there a reference to “fowl play”? You bet. Did he promise not to “gobble up too much time”? Well, people wouldn’t call him Uncle Joe if he didn’t.

Biden promised to keep things short, acknowledging the nippy day by saying, “Nobody likes it when their turkey gets cold.” Pretty sure even the turkeys groaned at that one.
(ibid.)

gobbledygook

A judge is allowing a Broadway actor arrested for his alleged walk-on role in the Capitol riot to remain free on pretrial release, despite his bizarre claims to be beyond the jurisdiction of the court.

At a contentious hearing held via videoconference Monday, James Beeks — a Michael Jackson impersonator who starred as Judas in a traveling “Jesus Christ Superstar” company until his arrest last week — narrowly escaped being jailed after a tense exchange with Chief Judge Beryl Howell of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C.

“I am an American standing under public law and I am here by special divine appearance,” Beeks told Howell.

“I cannot represent myself because I am myself,” he said. “I reserve all rights at all times and waive none, ever.”

Howell snapped back at Beeks, declaring his statements unintelligible.

“That’s all gobbledygook. I have no idea what you’re saying,” the judge said.
(Josh Gerstein. Judge lets actor charged in Jan. 6 riot head home despite ‘gobbledygook’ at hearing. The Hill. November 29, 2021.)

James Beeks

判事が、"That's all gobbledygook."

miff, miffy

Social notworking Tsar, Mark Zuckerberg, has angered the Tame Apple press by wanting to hurt its favourite company.

Zuckerberg has been reported by the Wall Street Journal as telling his team that Facebook needed to inflict pain on Apple for treating the social notworking outfit badly.

What miffed Zuckerberg was comments from Apple Tim Cook that Apple wouldn't get in a Facebook-style data-collection controversy.
(Nick Farrell. Zuckerberg wants to cause Apple pain. Fudzilla. February 15, 2021.)

ATHENS -- The two countries only recently re-engaging in exploratory talks, Turkey is upset about being left out of the Philia (Friendship) Forum that saw Greece invite Cyprus, Egypt, France, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to talk about relations while tensions are simmering with Turkey.
(Left Out, Turkey Still Miffed Over Greek Friendship Forum Snub. The National Herald. February 15, 2021.)

vanity plate

Parent: "Go now, you may not get the chance later."

At least for one New Hampshire woman, that was pretty much the ongoing conversation she had with her four kids ... so much that she made it her vanity license plate for 15 years.

Wendy Auger is proud of her "PB4WEGO" plate and told CNN she's never had any issues with it. Until now.

New Hampshire asked Auger, in a letter she received August 16, to surrender her plate because it includes a phrase relating to "sexual or excretory acts or functions," said Auger.
(Alisha Ebrahimiji. A mom with a license plate that reads 'PB4WEGO' wins a battle with the state to keep it. CNN. August 29, 2019.)

sexual or excretory acts or functions

Pee Before We Go

gong

yodel

To sing so that the voice fluctuates rapidly between the normal chest voice and a falsetto.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

A man was stabbed in an apparent road-rage attack after honking his horn at a stopped car in Brooklyn on Thursday night, police said.

The 53-year-old man was driving his blue Volvo on 65th Street near West 5th Street in Bensonhurst at about 5:30 p.m. when he honked at a red Infiniti that was stopped near the intersection, authorities said.

The driver of the Infinity and a passenger then got out of the car and began yelling at the Volvo driver, police said.

They then forced him out of his car, punched him and stabbed him, cops said. They both got back into the Infinity after the attack and sped away, authorities said.
(Man stabbed in road-rage attack after honking at car in Brooklyn. New York Post. January 18, 2019.)

honk

klaxon

guffaw

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) laughingly repeated sexist jokes as the keynote speaker at a 2011 Mississippi Farm Bureau convention as the audience guffawed in a recently unearthed video.

It’s the latest controversy to hit the candidate on the eve of a special election as President Donald Trump stumped for her in Mississippi on Monday evening.
(Mary Papenfuss. GOP Candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith Repeated Sexist Jokes At 2011 Convention, Video Shows. Huffington Post. November 26, 2018.)

a loud or boisterous burst of laughter
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

chug

A group of protesters brought beer to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) house in Washington hours before a vote to advance the nomination of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the Senate floor on Friday.

Footage of the demonstration showed protesters waving beer cans and red cups as they marched towards the Kentucky Republican’s home, chanting and yelling phrases like, “chug, chug, chug” and "What do we do with a drunken justice?"
(Aris Folley. Kavanaugh protesters bring beer, chant ‘chug’ outside McConnell’s home. The Hill. October 5, 2018.)

chug

gag

What’s worse than paying millions in fines to the feds? For Elon Musk, it may be the fact that he’s lost his Twitter privileges.

After slapping Tesla and its billionaire boss with a $20 million fine each over Musk’s misleading Aug. 7 tweet about taking the company private, federal regulators this weekend gagged Musk from tweeting any more Tesla news without a company lawyer’s OK.
(Carleton English. The SEC just yanked Elon Musk’s Twitter privileges. New York Post. September 30, 2018.)

federal regulators this weekend gagged Musk from tweeting any more Tesla news without a company lawyer’s OK

to prevent from exercising freedom of speech or expression

swoosh

Some sliced the swooshes right out of their socks. Others lit their shoes aflame, and filmed while they burned in their yards. All had strong feelings about Nike's new “Just Do It” campaign and one of its newest faces: Colin Kaepernick.

Nike revealed on Monday that Kaepernick — the out-of-work NFL quarterback who generated controversy for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality — would be featured in its 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign.
(People are destroying their Nike gear to protest the Colin Kaepernick ‘Just Do It’ campaign. The Washington Post. September 4, 2018.)

swoosh

This cat has people feel-ine like opening their wallets.

People from across the nation have shelled out more than $20,000 for victims of Hurricane Harvey in exchange for a funny photo of a Brooklyn woman’s cat.

Rachel Millman, 29, of Bushwick, came up with the purr-fect idea to help people affected by the Texas storm when she realized how much her Twitter followers love photos of her 18-pound tabby cat named Jerry.

“He’s kind of a mini-celebrity among my followers,” Millman told The Post. “So I thought how many people would actually donate to see this funny picture?”
(Melkorka Licea. This woman is using her goofy cat to raise money for Harvey aid. New York Post. September 2, 2017.)

This cat has people feel-ine like opening their wallets.

came up with the purr-fect idea to help people affected

gecko

A California man filed a stomach-turning lawsuit against Heineken beer and Kroger supermarket — claiming he sipped suds loaded with dead, canned geckos.

George Toubbeh said he got violently ill and “suffered from extreme anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder” from the beer he purchased and drank on Aug. 7, 2015, according to his lawsuit filed in Orange County Superior Court.

“Plaintiff consumed the Heineken beer and noted that the beer had a foul taste,” his lawyer Zahra Aziz wrote. “Immediately thereafter, plaintiff experiences severe abdominal pain followed by vomiting,”
(David K. Li. eer full of dead geckos: suit. New York Post. August 9, 2017.)

Washington (CNN) — A United States spy agency is apologizing for a tweet that jabbed at China over its treatment of American reporters who had traveled with President Barack Obama to cover the G20 meeting there.

"Classy as always China," the Defense Intelligence Agency tweeted Saturday from its @DefenseIntel account.

The initial tweet, which has since been deleted, included a link to a New York Times report about a dust-up over security protocols at the tarmac when Obama landed in China -- and later, shouting matches between Chinese officials and Secret Service agents at the West Lake State House, where Obama met Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The tiffs were largely over American journalists' access to Obama. Chinese officials unexpectedly limited reporters' access to the President.
(Eric Bradner. Spy agency tweets its way into China tiff. CNN. September 4, 2016.)

tiff

It was the first of two disputes between American and Chinese officials there. The second, minutes later, was over how many American journalists would be allowed in the room when Obama, Jinping and United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon met.
(ibid.)

― zzz

The ABCs of Zzzs

Sleep allows our bodies to rest and refuel for the next day. The sleep process is complex and active. As we sleep, there is important internal restoration and recuperation taking place. A lot of the information we take in throughout the day is processed and stored while we sleep.

The sleep-wake cycle is regulated through two systems which interact and balance each other out. These two systems are known as the circadian rhythm and sleep-wake homeostasis.
(Prerana Korpe. Sleep is serious: Catch your Zzzs. U.S. Air Force. March 10, 2016.)

Since the anthropologist won't be here for a while and you haven't had any sleep, why don't you go catch a few z 's while I keep an eye on things?
(Irene Hannon. Buried secrets. 2015.)

Let kids bag more zees. A relaxed summertime routine can sabotage regular bedtime - leaving kids shortchanged on sleep.

― bop

Uber is using the classic tactic of misdirection to keep drunken passengers from abusing drivers.

The ride-hailing service is providing the tipsy in the North Carolina city of Charlotte with the children's toy Bop It to keep them occupied so that their sober drivers don't have to put up with any high jinks, nonsense or abuse.

"Folks there have found it's a great way to keep drunk riders entertained so they don't distract their driver," Joe Sullivan, Uber's chief security officer, said in a blog post.
(Katie Collins. Uber's trick for taming drunks? A children's toy. CNET. January 27, 2016.)

Bop the toy, not the Uber driver.

Would you eat in a restaurant with a dirty bathroom?"

The most personal — and most telling — moment that a customer experiences in a restaurant isn't typically at the table.

It's in the restroom.

Walk into a clean restaurant restroom, and all's good. Walk into a dirty one, and there's hell to pay. Some 50% of restaurant patrons who have a negative experience with a bathroom — from dirty toilets to grimy soap dispenses to bad odors — will blab about it to friends and family, according to a recent survey by Harris Interactive for SCA Tissue North America.

Even more seriously, it's gonna cost business. Nearly 3 in 10 consumers surveyed said there are no second chances with dirty restrooms — and they would never return to the restaurant again.

For the nation's 980,000 restaurants, whose sales are expected to top $660 billion this year, the costs, in image and bottom line, for yucky restrooms can be staggering. Consumers are increasingly posting descriptions and even photos of what they find on Facebook, in blogs and travel reviews and on other social-media sites.

Less than a decade ago, the word tweet only meant one thing: the chirp of a bird. Boy has that changed.

As of this month, the lauded Oxford English Dictionary, the accepted authority of the English language, includes an official second definition for the word: "To make a posting on the social networking service Twitter. Also: to use Twitter regularly or habitually." That's right — the word tweet, as it relates to social networking, is now officially part of the English language.

John Simpson, chief editor of the OED, announced the new addition in a June update. "The noun and verb tweet (in the social-networking sense) has just been added to the OED," Simpson wrote. "This breaks at least one OED rule, namely that a new word needs to be current for ten years before consideration for inclusion. But it seems to be catching on."
(Angela Moscaritolo. Tweet Added to Oxford English Dictionary. PC Magazine. June 17, 2013.)
