来年の米大統領選の共和党指名候補のひとりであるNicki Haley氏が自身のコメントの釈明に追われているそうです。

ニューハンプシャー州で行われたタウンホールミーティングで、南北戦争のきっかけを何と考えるかと問われたHaley氏ですが、その回答において奴隷制（slavery）に言及しなかったことが疑問視されているものです。

Nikki Haley on Thursday sought to clarify her comments about the Civil War one day after a voter in New Hampshire called her out for not mentioning slavery as a cause of the war.

“I mean, of course the Civil War was about slavery,” Haley told radio host Jack Heath Thursday morning.

Haley氏は後になって、南北戦争が奴隷制と関連していることは当然認識していると釈明しましたが、最初に奴隷制の言及が無かったということに、民主党はもとより、共和党内からもHaley氏の歴史認識を疑問視する声が上がっている模様です。バイデン大統領はSNSのXに、南北戦争が奴隷制を契機としていることは自明だ、と投稿しました。

ところで、当の質問をしたのはタウンホールミーティングに出席していた選挙権者のひとりということになっていますが、詳細な素性は不明だということで、記事でもファーストネームが認められるに留まっています。

Haley氏は釈明の中で、この質問が「ひっかけ」であった可能性を示唆しています。民主党の「回し者」が意図的に質問をぶつけてきたのだろう、という訳です。

とありますが、"plant"には植物の意味以外に、

スパイ、回し者、さくら

の意味があります。

American Heritage Dictionaryの定義を見てみましょう。

A person or thing put into place in order to mislead or function secretly, especially:

a. A person placed in a group of spectators to influence behavior.

b. A person stationed in a given location as a spy or observer.

c. A misleading piece of evidence placed so as to be discovered.

d. A remark or action in a play or narrative that becomes important later.

この一件が今後どのような展開を見せるのか注目されるところです。

asylum

移民問題、特に南米からメキシコを経由して越境する移民は米国を二分する大きな問題となっていますが、ニューヨーク市のアダムズ市長はテキサス州から同市に流入する移民を抑制する政令を発布しました。

具体的には、移民を乗せたバスの受入れ時間帯の制限や事前申請の徹底などということですが、テキサス州がニューヨーク市に一方的に移民を押し付けているという不満があるようです。

NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order Wednesday to restrict the flow of migrant charter buses sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to New York City.

Adams said the order mandates any buses carrying migrants arrive in the city only between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays. The buses’ arrival must also be announced 32 hours in advance, he said. The order specifically applies to buses contracted by the state of Texas — whose governor Adams routinely blames for sending asylum seekers into the five boroughs.

さて、移民は"migrant"ですが、記事では、

asylum seeker

とも表現されています。

"asylum seeker"とは「亡命希望者」と訳されますが、圧政や人権侵害などから逃れるため、他国へ保護を求める人々を指す用語です。

先日ですが、高校生の娘から、難民と亡命者はどう違うか、という質問をうけました。英和辞書の"refugee"のエントリには、両方の日本語が載っているのですが、私は「亡命者」という日本語に対しては"asylum seeker"という英語がまず思い浮かんだのですが、正直なところこれらの日英語の明確な使い分けについては説明が出来なかったのでした。

質問を受けて調べたAmnesty Internationalの解説によると、"migrant"、"refugee"、"asylum seeker"はそれぞれ異なる概念であるということになっています。

このうち、"migrant"には国際的な定義は明確化しておらず、様々な理由を背景として他国へ移動する人々を指すということですが、"asylum seeker"は「亡命希望者」という日本語にある通り、他国による保護を求めている人のことであり、その結果「難民」と認定された人が"refugee"という扱い、ということのようです。

さて、"asylum"ですが、保護施設、収容所を意味するこの単語はラテン語asylumから来ており、さらに遡るとギリシャ語であると語源欄から確認できます。

"asylum"という単語のa-は欠落、除外を意味する接頭辞であり、続く部分のギリシャ語sulonは"right of seizure"（逮捕の権利）を意味するとあります。つまり、"asylum"とは捕われることから免れている状態を指しているもので、故に保護施設ということなのです。

この意味で"asylum"は"refuge"（避難場所）と同じであり、"asylum seeker"は"refuge"を求める人ということですから、Amnesty Internationalの説明は腑に落ちます。

因みに、"refuge"という単語はラテン語fugere（逃げる）から来ています。

go pear shaped

年末年始のホリデーシーズンですが、旅行中に自身が不在の自宅を他人に貸すというようなビジネスがあるそうです。資産の有効活用というやつです。上手く行けば旅行費用のいくらかを取り戻すこともできて良いですが・・・。

今日取り上げるのは、以下のくだり、

but what if it all goes pear shaped?

という部分で使われている、"go pear shaped"というフレーズです。この表現を知りませんでした。

"pear"は西洋ナシですから、西洋ナシの形のようになる、というのが字義通りの意味です。

手元にある辞書を引くと"pear-shaped"のエントリがありますが、セイヨウナシ形の、というそのまんまの意味と、他には、柔らかみのある豊かさの、朗々とした、という意味が載っているだけで、記事の用例にはいずれも当てはまらないものでした。

それでオンライン辞書などを検索してみると、この"go pear shaped"というフレーズは、

go wrong

と同じ意味合い、つまり上手く行かない、思った通りに事が運ばない、という意味で用いられることが分かりました。

何故、西洋ナシの形になることが"go wrong"の意味になるのか？

この表現はイギリス英語のものとされていますが、諸説あるらしいことが分かりました。

英語辞書の総本山オックスフォードによると、英空軍（RAF）のスラングとあり、墜落して先頭から潰れた機体全体の形状が西洋ナシを彷彿とさせるから、というような説明があります。

なるほど分からなくもありません。

他の説では、これまた飛行機に関連するものですが、上空で旋回軌道を試みた航空機がきれいな円を描けず、西洋ナシのような歪んだ旋回軌道になることになぞらえたもの、というものです。

なるほど、日本の梨がリンゴのように丸い形状をしているのと異なり、西洋ナシは上の部分はやや細長く、なで肩で下部に至って丸みを帯びる形状となっていて、綺麗な「まる」（丸）ではなく、歪んだ「まる」とも言えます。

その他の説では、パンクしたサッカーボール、空気が抜けた気球などの形状、つまり本来円球であるものが西洋ナシのような歪んだ形状に至る状況を意味したものという説、滑って尻もちをついたイメージ、など、やはり西洋ナシのいびつな形状に重ねたものとなっています。

似た意味合いの表現、"go south"もご覧下さい。

swatting

"swatting"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

動詞の"swat"には、（ハエなどを）ピシャリと叩く、という意味がありますが、今日取り上げる"swatting"には特別な意味があります。

共和党のグリーン議員は、"swatting"の被害で家族とのクリスマス休日がぶち壊しになったとSNSに投稿しました。

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said someone reported a fake crime at her home Monday, the latest in a series of apparent swatting incidents that have targeted her.

“I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here. My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn’t have to deal with this,” she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

記事の内容から起きたことのイメージがつきます。何も無いのに突然警察が自宅にやってきて・・・、というシチュエーションです。

"swatting"の"swat"とは警察の特殊部隊を意味するSWATに由来します。"swatting"とは、ターゲットの居宅で重大事件が起きているというような虚偽の通報を行い、警察などを動員することで嫌がらせをするというものです。

冒頭で取り上げた動詞のエントリとは別に、"swat"は以下のようにMerriam-Websterで定義されています。

to make a false report of an ongoing serious crime in order to elicit a response from law enforcement (such as the dispatch of a SWAT unit)

紙の辞書には多分載っていませんが、日本語ではいたずら電話、虚偽通報、くらいに相当するでしょうか。

しかしながら、米国の"swatting"では特殊部隊が出動した結果、死者が出た事例もあるそうですから、いたずらでは済まない話です。

organza

故ダイアナ元妃のドレスがオークションで百万ドルを超える高額で落札されたそうです。

Julien's Auctions announced on Sunday that Princess Diana's ballerina-length evening dress by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury that she wore in Florence, Italy in April 1985 and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986, along with a matching illustration, sold for $1,148,080. According to Julien's Auctions, "The dress with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her being a patron of The English National Ballet."

落札されたのは、黒いベルベット地に星形の模様をあしらったイブニングドレスで、ロイヤルブルーのスカートと併せてダイアナ元妃が着ていたものです。オークション対象はこれらにデザイナーによるイラストもセットになったもので、ダイアナ元妃愛用のドレスとしては最も高額な落札となったとあります。

小生はファッションや服飾に明るい訳ではありませんが、記事ではスカートについて、

とあります。

リボンなど装飾が付いたスカートということなのですが、"organza"というのは恐らく生地の素材を指すのであろうと読みました。そういえば、「オーガンジー」とかいうカタカナがあったなあ、と。

それで一応辞書を引いてみたのですが、ここから今日の1語を巡る混乱（！？）がスタートしました。

手元にある英和辞典の"organza"のエントリには、商標名Lorganzaに由来するとの説明があります。一方、"organzine"を参照せよ、ともあり、すぐ下にそのエントリがあるところ、こちらはUrgandiという都市名に由来するとあり、さらに"organdie"を参照せよ、とあるではありませんか。

そして、"organdie"のエントリでは「オーガンジー」というカタカナを見つけるのですが、そこでは"organzine"を参照せよ、とあり堂々巡りのようになってしまいました。

ここで、いわゆる「オーガンジー」（organdie）なるものは今回落札されたスカートの生地"organza"とは違うものらしいと分かるのですが、ネットを検索するとやはり「オーガンジー」と"organza"（オーガンザ）は別物のようです。しかし、ややこしいことにどちらも薄手の透明感ある服地を指すようなのです。

ところで、別の辞書を参照してみると、"organza" がLorganzaという商標からきているとするものは上にあげた研究社新英和とMerriam-Websterがあるのですが、American Heritage Dictionaryはウズベキスタンの都市名Urganchに由来するとあり、これは先に確認した"organzine"の由来である都市名Urgandiと同じものを指すのか？という疑問が。（結論としては同じようです。）

これを書いている今も整理出来ていないのですが、"organza"、"organzine"、"organdie"（organdyとも）という3つの単語とその由来に翻弄されています。

確からしいのは、オーガンジーと"organza"（オーガンザ）は一応別物らしいという事。

オーガンジーを表す英語は"organdie" (organdy) と思われるが、これに用いる絹糸である"organzine"は中央アジアの都市名（現ウズベキスタンのUrgench）に由来するらしいという事。

商標とされるLorganzaの詳細はネットを検索しても詳しいことは出て来ず、"organza"というスペルの単語の元になったという説はなるほどありそうな感じではありますが、本当なのかなぁ、と。

食品偽装 ー food fraud

アメリカの多数の州でアップルソースによる鉛中毒の報告が相次ぎ、米食品医薬品局が捜査に乗り出しました。

記事の写真に見るアップルソースの商品はパウチのような形状で販売されているもののようですが、乳幼児向けでしょうか、子供の中毒症例が特に多いということで、発育への悪影響が懸念される事態となっているもようです。

Health authorities are now investigating at least 205 cases of lead poisonings across 33 different states linked to contaminated applesauce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday. That's up from 125 cases in the agency's last weekly tally.

The growing case count comes as the Food and Drug Administration continues its probe into the source of the tainted cinnamon blamed for the contamination.

鉛が検出されているのは風味づけに用いられるシナモンが原因のようですが、許容値の数千倍というレベルで検出されており、被害の拡大が懸念されます。

商品の製造元はエクアドルのメーカーらしく、米当局も捜査の手が十分に及ばないともあります。

引用した記事の後半で、鉛の混入について意図的である可能性が示唆されています。

"economically motivated adulteration"というのがそうですが、これは金銭的な動機から行われた混入、ということです。

そして今日の1語、

food fraud

となるのですが、これは日本語では食品偽装と訳されています。

"food fraud"（食品偽装）にはいくつかの類型があるそうですが、典型的なものに商品のボリューム（量）を嵩増ししたり、原材料を安価で粗悪なもので置き換えるというものがあり、今回のケースでもこのような食品偽装の手口が疑われるとあります。

hot garbage

来年行われる米大統領選ですが、依然としてトランプ元大統領の影響力は大きく、つい先日も支持率では現職のバイデン大統領を脅かす候補であるという報道を見かけました。

しかしながら、前回大統領選後のワシントン議事堂襲撃を扇動したとされるトランプ氏がそもそも大統領選候補者として出馬することに否定的な意見は以前からあり、コロラド州ではトランプ氏を排除する決定を判事の賛成多数で下したと報じられています。

同様の動き、すなわちトランプ氏の大統領から排除すべきか否かという検討は他の州でも行われているようですが、排除されるとなるとトランプ氏の支持者は恐らく黙ってはいないでしょう。

引用した記事はコロラド州裁判の決定に反対の立場を取る元検事の意見を取り上げたものですが、記事のタイトルに出てくる、

hot garbage

という表現が目に留まりました。

"garbage"は屑（くず）、ゴミ、のことですから、今回の判決を批判しているということは分かります。

元検事の発言というのが以下のように引用されています。

FRANCEY HAKES: It really is a shocking opinion. I read it. It is a couple of hundred pages of hot garbage. There is simply no defense for this anywhere in the Constitution.

"hot garbage"という表現を見るのも聞くのも初めてで、いったい"hot"と"garbage"という単語がどのようにして結び付くのが分からなかったのです。

手元の辞書を引いてみますが、"hot garbage"を載せているものはなく、ネット検索してみるとどうやらスラングらしいです。

そして、"hot garbage"とは炎天下に放置された生ゴミが腐臭を放つことの連想から生まれた表現らしいということも分かりました。

従って、単に"garbage"でも否定的な表現ですが、"hot garbage"はさらに語気を強めた表現ということになるかと思われました。

つまり、単に「酷い」というよりも、「輪をかけて酷い」、ということです。

pixie cut

フランスの美人コンテストで優勝し、ミス・フランスに輝いた女性のヘアスタイルが物議を醸しているというニュースを読みました。

記事によれば、ミスコンテスト103年の歴史の中で受賞者のヘアスタイルがショート（短髪）というのは前代未聞だというのです。

A haircut sparked international online backlash after Eve Gilles was crowned Miss France on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Nord-pas-de-Calais sported a pixie cut hairstyle as she was crowned, making her the first contestant in the pageant’s 103-year history to not have long hair.

Social media users called out Gilles’ win, accusing the judges of supporting "wokeness" by picking someone with an "androgynous" look. In response, Gilles insisted that every woman is different.

記事のタイトルでは"short haircut"ですが、本文中では、

pixie cut hairstyle

と出てきます。

短く刈りそろえたショートの髪型を"pixie"というそうですが、これは知りませんでした。

"pixie"には英国の伝承に出てくる小妖精のことだと辞書にあります。髪型のショートカットとこの妖精に関連があるのかは、他の辞書等も見てみましたが、不明です。

ファッション誌ヴォーグの記事によりますと、"pixie cut"は1950年代に始まり、女優のオードリー・ヘップバーンらがショートスタイルにしたことで流行したということです。

それにしてもミスコンテストではロングヘアが常識（！？）というのは知りませんでした。

今回優勝した女性はショートスタイルは個性と主張していますが、それを"woke"だと批判する声があるとかで、こういう議論が起きるのも時代の流れなのでしょうか。

tranche

米国のウクライナへの支援の予算が間も無く尽きようとしているというニュースは先日も取り上げましたが、EUによるウクライナ支援も同様の困難に直面しています。

初めて見る単語でしたが、記事中、

the latest tranche of funds for Kyiv

と出てきます。

"tranche"はおおよそ"portion"（一部分）という語に置き換えられますが、収入とか資金、債権など、比較的大きな額のお金の一部分を指す単語です。

スペルから想像がつくように、"tranche"はフランス語から来ています。

フランス語の動詞trancherは切る（to cut）という意味で、"tranche"は切られたもの、切り分けられた部分（slice）を意味すると辞書の語源欄にあります。

因みに、塹壕を意味する"trench"も同じフランス語に由来しており、これは塹壕が地面を掘って（切り裂いて）形成するものであることを指しています。

米国の上院の会議室で撮影されたと思しき性行為の録画ビデオがネットに流出し、騒ぎになっています。

問題の録画は、議会スタッフの男性が全裸で会議室のテーブルの上で他の男性と性行為に及んでいるという生々しいもので、同性愛者のオンラインコミュニティにアップロードされていたものをニュースサイトのDaily Callerが取り上げました。

今日取り上げるのは、

sexcapade

という単語です。

これは"sex"と"escapade"のかばん語です。

"escapade"には羽目を外すこと、いたずら、という意味合いがありますが、重要法案の審議や聴聞が行われる場を冒涜するような行為は明らかに場違いな行為であり、タダで済む話ではありません。

報道を受けて、民主党上院議員は問題のスタッフを解雇したと発表しました。

gate lice

唐突ですが、"gate lice"って何のことかご存知でしょうか？

The decision of when to get in line to board an airplane can be a contentious one, but it shouldn’t be.

While gate agents will give clear, boarding group-specific directions , there remains a strong contingent of passengers who either get in line before they’re called or wait in their seats until they’re the last to board. While the latter type of traveler often hangs back to avoid standing in line altogether, the motives driving the former group can be harder to place.

年末年始の休暇が近づいてきましたが、旅行や帰省に飛行機を使う人も多いことでしょう。

飛行機の場合、搭乗機のゲートでしばらく待つことになりますが、搭乗の順序は飛行機の前方の席から、即ちファーストクラスの乗客からというのが普通です。また、車椅子の利用者など介助の必要な人が優先され、一番安い料金のエコノミークラスの乗客は最後というのが定番となっています。

しかし、順番でもないのにゲート入り口付近に並び始める乗客というのがどの国のどの飛行場でも見られます。

こうした乗客は優先的に案内されている乗客が搭乗する流れを阻害するため、

"gate lice"のliceは"louse"（シラミ）という名詞の複数形です。"gate lice"は搭乗ゲートに集るシラミという、誠に以って不名誉な名称を与えられています。

なぜ、自分の順番にならないのにゲート入り口に並ぼうとするのか？記事によれば、ひとつには旅行にウキウキして興奮が抑え切れずに気がはやるというのがあると分析されています。また、もうひとつには、ひとりがそういう行動を取ると、集団心理、競争心が働いて連鎖的に同じ行動を取る乗客が出てしまうというのがあるようです。

なお、"lice"（louse）には、下劣な奴、鼻つまみ者、という俗語の意味があるようで、順番を守っている他の乗客は元より、空港職員にとっても嫌われ者のようです。

ウクライナのゼレンスキー大統領が米国を訪問、ホワイトハウスでのバイデン氏と会談となりましたが、その後の記者会見で矢継ぎ早に質問攻めするマスコミにバイデン氏がぷっつん（！？）した、という記事を読みました。

多数の記者が恐らくは一斉に質問し始めたのでしょうか、バイデン氏は、ちょっと静かに！というような感じで諌めた模様です。

上で「ぷっつんした」と書いたのですが、カッとなった、キレかけた、と訳しても良いと思われる、今日の1語は"testy"です。

辞書には、

短気な、怒りっぽい

といった訳語が見えます。つまり、アレですね、大阪弁でいうイラチというか、頭に血がのぼりやすい、ということかと思います。

ところで、"testy"という単語のスペルにはtestという文字が見えるので何だかカタカナの「テスト」、つまり試験を思い出しますね。

"testy"という単語はラテン語testaに由来するのですが、このラテン語はレンガとか（土製の）壺、甕、また動物の外殻、被殻といった意味です。

このラテン語が頭部、頭の意味に発展し、フランス語ではtêteになります。因みに、壺とか甕から頭部を発想するのは、ドイツ語で頭を意味するKopfが英単語の"cup"と類縁にあるということとも共通性があるそうです。（Online Etymology Dictionaryによる。）

ということで、"testy"とは頭と関連しており、頭に血がのぼってキレやすいことを言うようになった、という話でした。

ところで、上では英単語の"test"という単語にも触れましたが、大変興味深いことに、テスト、試験を意味する"test"もラテン語のtestaと関係があるんですね。

語源解説によれば、金属を溶かして質を試すのに壺や甕を用いたことから、現在の"test"の意味になったそうです。

veritas

米・ハーバード大学は、反ユダヤ主義への偏向などで批判されている学長の続投を決定しました。

10月に発生したハマスによるイスラエルへのテロ行為の後、ハーバード大学など米の名門大学ではユダヤ人の大量虐殺を容認するような発言などが見られ大きな問題となりました。学長についてはこれ以外にも、発表した論文の中に盗用が疑われる記述などが指摘され、学長としての資質が問われていました。

学長職の続投が正式発表されたことを受け、共和党議員からは一斉に批判の声があがっているようです。

引用した記事は、自身もハーバード大卒というステファニク議員による批判です。同氏はハーバード大のモットーである"Veritas"を引き合いに、大学側の決定を非難しています。

prevail

ウクライナのゼレンスキー大統領が3度目の訪米と報じられています。

米国のウクライナ支援は予算が尽きかけており、米議会で追加予算承認のタイムリミットが迫っていると連日報道されているところです。支援を進めたいバイデン政権と消極的な共和党側で対立構図にあり、不法移民対策の強化とセットでの妥協点が模索されているようです。

支援が滞ることになれば戦況はウクライナにとって不利なものとなることは確実と見られており、ゼレンスキー大統領自ら支援を訴えることが訪問の目的です。

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will get one last chance to prevail on senators to cut a deal on funding Ukraine’s defense against Russia before the chamber is scheduled to go home for the holidays.

この"prevail"という単語を見ると思い出すフレーズがあります。

May peace prevail on earth.

読者のみなさんも一度は見たことがあるのでは！？

街中や公園などに立っている白いポールに黒字で書かれたメッセージです。「世界人類が平和でありますように。」という日本語が添えられています。英語を習い始めた中学生の頃、まだ"prevail"という単語を知らなかった私は、その意味を辞書で確認して、ポールの書かれたこの文言は平和（peace）が地球上に「あまねく行き渡る」（"prevail"）ということを祈願する文なのだ、と納得した記憶があります。

さて、引用した記事では、2箇所、"prevail"という表現が使われています。

大体意味するところは分かるのですが、ここでの"prevail"の意味は、「あまねく行き渡る」や「勝つ」ではちょっとうまくはまりません。辞書では語義として最後の方に載っていますが、

説き伏せる、納得させる

という意味です。

この意味で"prevail"が用いられる時、目的語には相手（人）を取り、前置詞としてon、uponが用いられます。

ゼレンスキー大統領はウクライナ支援に懐疑的な上院議員らを得心させるために米国を訪問したという訳です。

この意味合いにおいて、"prevail"は"persuade"の同義語ですが、American Heritage Dictionaryの解説には以下のようにあり、

超インフレに見舞われている同国の経済を立て直すため、ミレイ大統領は自国通過のドル化などを公約に当選しましたが、大幅な歳出削減など、過激な政策が果たして同国の再生につながるのか、その手腕が問われます。

ハビエル・ミレイ氏は経済学者の肩書を持つそうですが、テレビ番組などにも出演し、かねてより過激な経済政策の持ち主だったようです。政治的にはいわゆる極右に位置付けられ、アルゼンチンのトランプとも呼ばれているとか。

実のところ、"wild-haired"なる言い回しは今回引用した記事に限らず、他紙でも同様で、同氏を形容する表現として定着しているようです。

政治家の髪型というのは人物の特徴的な要素として、とかくメディアが取り上げるものだと思われます。トランプ氏の髪型しかり、ジョンソン元英首相のそれもしかり、です。

ミレイ氏の"wild-haired"ですが、"wild"という英語には“野生”の意味が思い浮かびますが、髪（hair）と結び付いた場合には（髪の毛が）乱れた、という訳語が辞書には見えます。

記事にみるミレイ氏の頭髪は豊かでボリュームのある感じですが、乱れているようには見えません。また、ジョンソン氏のようなボサボサ頭、というのでもないように思います。もみあげ部分は長めで、顔貌には「ワイルドな」印象はあります。

SNSのXへの広告出稿を取り止めたディズニーにマスク氏が噛みつきました。

反ユダヤ主義発言を看過しているというのがディズニーによる広告取り止めの理由だったことは先日も取り上げました。

その後、ニューメキシコ州が、フェースブック、インスタグラムなどを運営するメタ社を、児童ポルノの温床になっているとして訴えたのですが、ディズニーはメタ社に対しては広告取り止めなどの措置を取っておらず、要は「態度が違う」という主張のようです。

マスク氏はXでの投稿で、（ディズニーCEOの）Bob Iger氏はクビにすべき、などと舌鋒鋭く非難し、Iger氏を

と呼んだ、と記事にあります。

この"stand-up guy"とは、

信頼できる人物、実直な人物

という意味の表現です。

マスク氏の発言には痛烈な皮肉が込められていると言えるでしょう。

師走始め、日本では流行語大賞、英語圏ではメジャーな辞書が発表するWord of the Yearの時期です。

オックスフォード辞書が2023年のWord of the Yearを発表しましたが、その1語は、

rizz

だそうです。

The Oxford University Press announced Monday the 2023 Word of the Year is "rizz."

A slang word popularized by social media, rizz was chosen from a pool of eight words by language experts with input from the public.

日本語に訳しにくいと思われますが、"rizz"とは異性を惹きつける魅力、というような意味合いを持つ表現だということです。

カリスマ（charisma）という単語から来ているらしく、発音の強勢が置かれる部分だけが取り出される形で生まれた単語と言えるでしょう。（以前取り上げた"rona"は同じような形成による単語になると思います。）

"rizz"の用法としては動詞、名詞の2つがあります。

To rizz is someone is to attract or seduce them, Oxford defines.

To have rizz is to have the ability to charm others through communicating.

Bronx cheer

アラブ首長国連邦のドバイでCOP 28（国連気候変動枠組み条約第28回締約国会議）が開催されています。

環境問題、特に温室効果ガス削減の取り組みが話し合われる会議の1コマでちょっとしたハプニングがあったようです。

米国代表として出席したケリー元国務長官がスピーチの最中におならをかましたというのです。

The Biden administration’s climate envoy was discussing US policy on coal power plants at the Climate Change Conference in Dubai on Sunday when Kerry may have unleashed a burst of wind energy.

問題の出来事はケリー氏が、温暖化を食い止めるためには石炭火力による発電設備をこれ以上認める訳には行かない、などと熱弁をふるっている、まさにその最中に起きました。

引用した記事の冒頭では、ケリー氏は自身の排出ガスを削減すべき、などと皮肉たっぷりですが、全くもってタイミングが悪かったと言う他ありません。

さて、引用の後半部分で、

a Bronx cheer suddenly erupted midsentence

とあります。

この"Bronx cheer"のBronxはニューヨークのブロンクス地区のことですが、野球チームのニューヨークヤンキースのホームでもあります。

チームのファンらが審判の判定に異議があると、唇と舌を震わせて音を出すブーイングが巻き起こるといい、これが"Bronx cheer"と呼ばれる所以だそうです。

つまり、"Bronx cheer"とは軽蔑、嘲りの所作を意味するものなのですが、唇と舌を使って出すその音はおならの音を模したものとも言われており、故に記事ではケリー氏のおならに擬えて使っていると思われます。

終わりの見えないロシア、ウクライナの戦争ですが、各国のウクライナ支援の継続に懸念が生じています。

米ホワイトハウスはウクライナへの軍事支援が議会で承認されない状況が長引けばウクライナの敗北につながると警告しました。

White House budget director Shalanda Young said funds for military aid would run out by the end of the year and that a failure by Congress to approve new support would “kneecap” Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion. “There is no magical pot of funding available to meet this moment. ウクライナ支援をめぐっては米国のみならず、EU諸国でも予算承認に難渋している模様です。

記事では、

budget bunfight

とあるのですが、"bunfight"という単語を知りませんでした。

手元の辞書を引いてみると、茶会、ティーパーティ、とあるのですが？？

英俗語、つまりイギリス英語の俗語表現とあるのですが、何故〜fightと名のつくものがお茶会になるのか、曰く付きの単語と思われました。

"bunfight"のbunとは、パンのことです。

馴染みのあるハンバーガーの「バンズ」（buns）はその"bun"の複数形であり、真ん中に具材を挟む丸いパンを指しますが、"bun"は菓子パンの一種でもあるそうで、これはイギリス英語に特有の意味なのか分かりませんが、お茶会で供されるものなのだそうです。ハンバーガーの「バンズ」はシンプルなものに決まっていると思うのですが、お茶会で供されるの"bun"はドライフルーツやシナモンなど、味の付いた菓子パンのようです。そしてお茶会ではこの"bun"をめぐって子供らがケンカするから、お茶会のことを"bunfight"と言うのだとか。

それが発展して（！？）、"bunfight"は大論争とか激論の意味でも用いられるようになったそうです。

周りくどいというか、変わった語源の単語ですね。

cross on one’s back

反ユダヤ主義的な言論を放置しているとの批判から、SNSへの広告出稿を見合わせる動きが大手メディアを中心に起きており、X（旧ツイッター）の広告収入を直撃しています。

大手メディアの1社にディズニーがあります。

(Bob) Iger recently went public with his decision to pull ads from Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter) social media platform, joining others in the progressive CEO class attacking someone the left hates as much as Donald Trump.

The overarching goal of the progressive movement, if you haven’t noticed, is destroying the platform Musk is trying to remake from the lefty safe space it had been for far too long to a free-speech mecca. 

No more silencing of conservative voices, no more taking orders from the lefties in the Biden administration. 

With that, Musk, despite being the world’s richest man, had a big “X” on his back.

Xを舞台にした騒動は先日も取り上げたところですが、引用した記事のくだりに、

Musk… had a big “X” on his back

という部分があります。

ここでの"X"は、恐らく"cross"と発音すべきものですが、SNSのXに掛けているものと思われます。

そしてその意味するところは、"cross"（十字架）を背負っている（have cross on one’s back）となるのですが、辞書を見ると、

bear [take up] one’s cross

a cross to bear

などとあり、その意味は、

試練、受難、苦難に耐える

などとなっています。

マスク氏自身のSNSでの発言が今回の問題の引き金になった訳で、その苦難はマスク氏が負うべきもの、ということでしょう。

この表現は新約聖書のマタイ伝（16:24）に出てくるイエスの言葉に由来すると、研究社新英和大辞典の解説にあります。

新共同訳のテキストでは「自分の十字架を背負って」となっていますが、King James Version等の英語訳は、"take up his cross"となっています。

emcee

電気自動車メーカーの米テスラがいよいよCybertruckの発売にこぎ着けたようです。

2019年に発表、予約を受け付けていたそうですが、その後遅れに遅れてこのタイミングとなった模様です。

CEOのマスク氏自らCybertruck紹介のイベントを取り仕切ったそうですが、記事のくだりでは、

と、冒頭に出てきた後、3段落目では、

Musk, who emceed the event…

とあります。

"emceed"という見慣れないスペルの単語に一瞬目が留まりました。

これは、"emcee"という動詞の過去形で、

MC

の発音を文字にしたものになっています。そして、MCとは

Master of Ceremonies

の頭文字を取った略語、司会者という意味です。従って、"emcee"という動詞は、司会をする、という意味になります。ここでは場を取り仕切る、という意味合いでしょう。

この"emcee"に見られるような語形成を言語学では何と言うのだろうと思いますが、同じような単語として、以前取り上げた"kayo"を思い出しました。

"kayo"は、K.O. (Knock Out) の発音、つまりK（kay）、O、をスペルにした単語ですが、辞書には「発音綴り」という説明がされていました。

つまり、略語の発音をそのままスペルに展開した単語、それが動詞としても用いられる、という特色があるというものです。（名詞→略語→その発音をスペル化→動詞化）
