Uzi

A father-son duo peddled illegal guns ranging from a lilac-colored revolver to fully automatic Uzi through an illicit “Iron Pipeline” from Georgia to New York City, authorities said Monday.

The high-powered weaponry — which also included three “switches” that can turn a semi-auto handgun into a “fully operational machine pistol” — was seized in a sting, according to NYPD officials.
(Greg Carlton. Father-son duo peddled guns — including lilac revolver and Uzi — in illicit ‘Iron Pipeline’: NYC cops. New York Post. June 22, 2026.)

fully automatic Uzi

upbraid

President Trump reportedly took Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to task during a Monday phone call over the latter’s military campaign in Lebanon.

Axios reported, citing two U.S. officials and a third source briefed on the call, that Trump called Netanyahu “crazy” and accused him of ingratitude.

At one point, Trump reportedly yelled at Netanyahu, “What the f— are you doing?”
(Max Rego. Report: Trump upbraids Netanyahu over Lebanon, asking, ‘What the f— are you doing?’ The Hill. June 1, 2026.)

Trump upbraids Netanyahu over Lebanon

upend

The White House is preparing a government-wide nondisclosure agreement aimed at curtailing federal workers’ sharing of “confidential government information,” as it seeks to stop internal leaks to media organizations.

The controversial move is the latest step in the Trump administration’s efforts to crack down on the dissemination of its internal planning and data. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office last year started mandating that Pentagon officials sign NDAs before being read in on projects, initiatives and other work products, CNN has reported.

President Donald Trump is also upending the federal workforce, which he sees as an impediment to implementing his agenda.
(Tami Luhby. Trump administration proposes having all federal workers sign NDAs. CNN. May 26, 2027.)

Trump is also upending the federal workforce…

upended his chair

to affect to the point of being upset or flurried
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

up-and-comer

Recruiting journalists to the startup was one of the steepest challenges, Turner recalled in his memoir “Call Me Ted.” But the mogul’s maverick attitude appealed to some just as it scared off others.

“We didn’t often get people who were at the height of their careers,” he recalled, “but we did find some promising up-and-comers who were attracted by CNN and the chance to be on the ground floor of something new, ambitious, and exciting.”
(Brian Stelter. ‘News will be the star’: Ted Turner’s extraordinary uphill battle to launch CNN. CNN. May 6, 2026.)

Showing signs of advancement and ambitious development: an up-and-coming executive; an up-and-coming neighborhood.

unhoused

A woke California school-board leader flipped out when a staff presentation used the word “homeless” instead of “unhoused” — while she was “personally offended” by the commonly used phrase.

Flynn demanded the term be changed to “unhoused,” interrupting another board member who noted that “homeless” is the language used by the state of California.
(Nina Joudeh. Woke California school board member loses it when staff uses word ‘homeless’ instead of ‘unhoused’. New York Post. February 4, 2026.)

The term caught on. Gradually it spread among west coast professionals working with or advocating for people living on the streets, and then it made its way across the US. Adam Aleksic, a Harvard linguistics graduate who started the Etymology Nerd blog, noted its apparent first appearance on Twitter as another word for homeless occurred in October 2008. Around 2020, the use of unhoused began growing exponentially, according to Google Trends. Today, in mainstream articles and conversations, it’s synonymous with – and for many people, preferable to – homeless. While governments don’t yet widely employ it, some grassroots groups and scholars use it exclusively.

Critics have derided the new word as clunky and unfamiliar, potentially the product of woke virtue signaling. But those who have adopted it say it’s for the same reasons OSL originally did: to lessen stigma and to highlight that those lacking permanent roofs over their heads may still have communities or physical spaces they consider home.
(Amanda Abrams. Is it OK to use the word ‘homeless’ – or should you say ‘unhoused’? The Guardian. July 20, 2023.)

ugg

An Australian ugg-boot company has changed its brand for foreign customers following a lengthy legal battle with an American rival.

Ugg Since 1974 is owned by Australian Leather and was sued by Deckers Outdoor Corporation for its use of "ugg."

Now, after almost 10 years since the legal battle began, it's been forced to rebrand as Since 1974 for customers outside Australia.
(Lindsay Dodgson. Australian ugg-boot maker forced to rebrand after trademark battle with American rival. MSN. January 14, 2025.)

unseaworthy

The city of Baltimore said the owners of the Dali cargo ship should be held accountable in last month’s crash and subsequent collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, according to a new court filing. The crash left six people who were working on the bridge at the time of the collapse dead.

In court papers filed on Monday, Baltimore is accusing parent company, Grace Ocean Private Ltd., of gross and potentially criminal negligence when it put an "unseaworthy vessel" into the water on March 26, just moments before it crashed into a structure supporting the bridge and causing it to topple, ABC News reported.
(Lawrence Richard. Baltimore says who should be held responsible for Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in new filing. Fox News. April 23, 2024.)

it put an "unseaworthy vessel" into the water on March 26

trustworthy
newsworthy
blameworthy

ulterior

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he had not changed his view that Chinese President Xi Jinping was effectively a dictator, a comment likely to land with a thud in Beijing after the two leaders held straightforward summit talks.

Biden held a solo news conference after four hours of talks with Xi on the outskirts of San Francisco. At the end of the news conference, he was asked whether he still held the view that Xi was a dictator, something he said in June.
(Biden calls Xi a dictator after carefully planned summit. Reuters. November 17, 2023.)

In response, China's foreign ministry said it "strongly opposes" the remarks, without mentioning Biden by name.

"This statement is extremely wrong and irresponsible political manipulation," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters on Thursday at a routine briefing.

"It should be pointed out that there will always be some people with ulterior motives who attempt to incite and damage U.S.-China relations, they are doomed to fail."

Mao refused to specify the identity of "some people" in answer to a follow-up question.
(ibid.)

there will always be some people with ulterior motives who attempt to incite and damage U.S.-China relations, they are doomed to fail

ulterior motives

この"ulterior"という単語ですが、ラテン語のulter(向こうの、彼方の)、ultra(はるか彼方に)という語に由来しています。

uncanny valley

Follow this makeup trend to verify you are not a robot — but want to be.

The viral “uncanny valley” makeup trend is taking over TikTok, as creators try to spook their viewers with their scary good makeup skills.

“Uncanny valley” is the term used to describe the uncomfortable feeling people have when making eye contact with an android — a robot made to resemble a human.

To replicate this feeling, TikTokers are throwing things into reverse — and applying their makeup to appear like a bot.
(Adriana Diaz. What is the ‘uncanny valley’ makeup trend — and why is it creeping everybody out? New York Post. November 8, 2023.)

the term used to describe the uncomfortable feeling people have when making eye contact with an android

Utahn

Gazans break into aid centres, taking flour and supplies, UN says
(Reuters. October 29, 2023.)

Gazan

Here’s how many Utahns have gotten the new COVID-19 shot

Fewer than 5% of all Utahns have received the latest COVID-19 shot since it was released in mid-September, a rate that lags behind nationwide numbers that are being described as “absymal.”
(Deseret News. October 28, 2023.)

Utahn

Is it Utahn or Utahan?

What about Utaan? Utahnian? Utonian? There seem to be myriad demonyms for those who call the Beehive State home, but can there be more than one right answer?

A Dec. 31, 1980, Associated Press article published in the Beaver County Times highlighted the discrepancy between local and national terminology:

"The U.S. Government and Printing Office is trying to give state residents a lesson on how to spell Utahan, but Utahns just won't listen," it said. "According to the printing office, residents of the Beehive State are Utahans, not Utahns. That's also the opinion of Webster's New World Dictionary, which doesn't even list Utahn as an alternative form."
(Stephanie Grimes. Is it Utahn or Utahan? KSL.com. March 5, 2013.)

unprovoked

A man was arrested Thursday for shoving a 74-year-old straphanger onto the subway tracks during a “disgusting,” unprovoked attack on the Upper East Side, cops said.

Cops nabbed Derrick Mills, 49, was nabbed for the heartless assault inside the 68th Street-Hunter College station early Tuesday, which left the victim with a fractured spine.
(NYPD arrests man who shoved 74-year-old onto NYC subway tracks in ‘disgusting’ attack. New York Post. September 14, 2023.)

“disgusting,” unprovoked attack

unprovoked attack

uncharted waters

(CNN) Donald Trump faces more than 30 counts related to business fraud in an indictment from a Manhattan grand jury, according to two sources familiar with the case -- the first time in American history that a current or former president has faced criminal charges.

Trump is expected to appear in court on Tuesday.

The indictment has been filed under seal and will be announced in the coming days. The charges are not publicly known at this time.

The decision is sure to send shockwaves across the country, pushing the American political system -- which has never seen one of its ex-leaders confronted with criminal charges, let alone while running again for president -- into uncharted waters.
(Donald Trump indicted by Manhattan grand jury on more than 30 counts related to business fraud. CNN. March 31, 2023.)

uncharted waters

The decision…, push(ing) the American political system… into uncharted waters

But those deadly records were broken again this week, and experts warn this heat wave could be evidence of a move into uncharted waters.
(PBS NewsHour, 2019)

"We're in uncharted waters," he said. "There's no precedent you can look back to..."
(Cleveland.com, 2018)

The US is entering uncharted territory, but one rife with opportunities for new forms of cooperation, some observers say.
(Christian Science Monitor, 2005)

China's 'zero-COVID' policy could be Xi's undoing
China hasn't seen protests like these since 1989's pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square
(Helen Raleigh. China's 'zero-COVID' policy could be Xi's undoing. Fox News. November 29, 2022.)

If China's dictator Xi Jinping had thought he could begin his third term with firm control of the nation, he is facing a rude awakening. Protests against his cruelty-enforced "zero Covid" policy erupted in several Chinese cities last week and have now spread nationwide, with some protestors openly demanding Xi resign.

The canary in the coal mine was a fire in a high-rise apartment in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang and home to millions of Uyghur Muslims and minorities, killing at least ten people and injuring nine. Many people blamed the barriers erected by the local authorities to confine residents inside the apartment, which hindered residents' escape and fire-fighters' rescue efforts, leading to unnecessary deaths. Heartbreaking videos of fire victims desperately crying for help went viral on China's social media before censors took them down.

The Chinese public was outraged by what they saw and couldn't help wondering if a similar tragedy would happen to them and their loved ones.
(ibid.)

Xi’s undoing

work one’s own undoing

ugly sweater

Microsoft has launched a new Windows software-themed ugly sweater on its Xbox Gear Shop dedicated to the infamous Windows game Minesweeper.

This is Microsoft’s second year of Windows-themed ugly sweaters. Last year, the company released three ugly sweater designs, including one garment based on the timeless MS Paint application, which humorously looked as if it were designed in that very app.

Microsoft is selling the Minesweeper ugly sweater for the explosive price of $74.99 — $5 more expensive than last year’s designs. The sweaters sold out in 24 hours last year with a late December restock, so if you want to look like a pro at flagging mines this holiday, then get one soon.
(Umar Shakir. Microsoft is selling ugly Windows sweaters again, and this time, it’s Minesweeper. The Verge. November 30, 2021.)

Move over twinkling fir trees and wreaths, eggnog, stockings and the office secret Santa -- there's a new kid in town. Over the last decade the ugly Christmas sweater has firmly embedded itself in yuletide culture.

The garment has quickly become an essential part of the holidays, ubiquitous as Christmas lights and wrapping paper. It's obnoxious and tacky, but also fuzzy and kind of wholesome -- the fashion equivalent of a Hallmark Christmas movie (with a healthy dose of tongue-in-cheek).
(Marianna Cerini. A cozy history of the ugly Christmas sweater. CNN. November 15, 2021.)

A condominium collapse in Surfside, Florida, on Thursday morning has left many wondering what caused the massive implosion, which has so far killed one person and left 99 people unaccounted for.

Miami-Dade County authorities are currently conducting an investigation into the Champlain Towers South Condo collapse, though an official cause behind the devastation has yet to be determined.
(Audrey Conklin. Miami building collapse: Possible causes explained by area expert. FOX Business. June 24, 2021.)

unaccounted for

America United"

President-elect Joe Biden’s theme for his inauguration will be “America United,” his transition team announced Monday.

“At a time of unprecedented crisis and deep divisions, America United reflects the beginning of a new national journey that restores the soul of America, brings the country together, and creates a path to a brighter future,” a statement from the transition team read.

“This inauguration marks a new chapter for the American people — one of healing, of unifying, of coming together, of an America united. It is time to turn the page on this era of division.

“The inaugural activities will reflect our shared values and serve as a reminder that we are stronger together than we are apart, just as our motto ‘e pluribus unum’ reminds us — out of many, one,” Biden inauguration CEO Tony Allen said in a statement.
(Emily Jacobs. Joe Biden announces ‘America United’ as inauguration theme. New York Post. January 11, 2021.)

“America United”

Virginia residents have been advised not to plant any unsolicited seeds they may have received in the mail, the state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VADACS) has advised.

Residents reported to the VDACS that they received packets of seeds in the mail with writing on the outside that appears to be Chinese. The seeds have yet to be identified, but officials speculate that the seeds may be of an invasive plant species and are advising residents not to use them.

"Taking steps to prevent their introduction is the most effective method of reducing both the risk of invasive species infestations and the cost to control and mitigate those infestations," VDACS officials said in a release.

Virginia is not the only state to receive unsolicited seed packets, with FOX 13 Salt Lake City reporting that residents across Utah have received similar deliveries.
(Peter Aitken. Virginia, Utah residents report receiving unsolicited packets of seeds in the mail reportedly from China. Fox News. July 26, 2020.)

unsolicited seeds
unsolicited seed packets

Jane Rupp, president of the Better Business Bureau's (BBB's) Utah chapter, told FOX 13 the incidents could be a scam known as “brushing” where some companies will send you a product so they can post a fake review in your name.
(ibid.)

Uncle

Aunt Jemima will change its name and logo, acknowledging the brand's origins rooted in a racial stereotype, which hearkens back to nostalgia for the South in the times of slavery.

Toward the end of 2020, the 130-year-old pancake and syrup brand will remove the image of "Aunt Jemima" from packaging, parent companies Quaker Foods and PepsiCo said on Wednesday. The name change will follow.

"We recognize Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype," Kristin Kroepfl, chief marketing officer at Quaker Foods North America, said in a statement. "While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough."

Following the news, food giant Mars also said it's "evaluating all possibilities" for changing its Uncle Ben's brand, which has long been criticized as a stereotype.
(Alina Selyukh. Aunt Jemima Will Change Name, Image As Brands Confront Racial Stereotypes. NPR. June 17, 2020.)

Both Aunt Jemima and Uncle Ben's have also been criticized for relying on titles "aunt" and "uncle," which historically were used by people who resisted applying the honorific "Mr." or "Ms." to an African American person.
(ibid.)

ukase

In the Writers’ Building he went into the lavatory. Then he remembered: by some inspired ukase from above, all mirrors had been removed from the Writers’ Building a year ago.
(F. Scott. Fitzgerald. On the trail of Pat Hobby.)

uncalled for

An 8-year-old girl said she felt "singled out" after being blocked from getting her school picture taken because of her hairstyle.

Marian Scott told CNN affiliate WILX she cried after she was told that she couldn't get her photo taken because of the red extensions in her hair.

Ben Kriesch, principal of Paragon Charter Academy, told the station that Marian's red extensions violated school policy.

Marian's father Doug Scott called the incident "upsetting."

"All of this is uncalled for, they didn't even call us," Scott told WILX. "They let her stay in school. ... So if she's not a disruption to the class, then why is she a disruption to the picture?"

The Jackson, Michigan, school's handbook says students' hair color must be "of natural tones" to get their picture taken, WILX reported.
(Gabrielle Sorto. An 8-year-old girl wasn't allowed to take her school picture because of her red hair extensions. CNN. October 9, 2019.)

"All of this is uncalled for, they didn't even call us,"

uncalled for

unnecessary
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)
