今年の6月、火災に見舞われたロサンゼルスの冷凍食品倉庫で大量の冷凍食品が野晒しになってしまい、2ヶ月が経過した今も処理が追い付かず、腐敗臭が酷いことになっているそうです。

On 17 June, a fire destroyed a large cold-storage warehouse in the area, leaving behind some 85 million lb (39 million kg) of rotting food, including beef, pork, poultry and seafood.

Nearly two months later, residents of Boyle Heights say the clean-up has taken a lot longer than expected, and they've grown frustrated with the pungent odour hovering over the area.

今日の1語に取り上げたいのは、記事のタイトル、

Tonnes of rotting food from vast LA warehouse fire…

にある、"tonne"という単語です。大量の・・・、という意味であることは明白なんですが、"tons of 〜"ではなく、"tonnes of 〜"です。どちらも重量、容積を指す単位である「トン」ですが、"tonne"はメートル法における「トン」（メートルトン、仏トン）を指します。

一方で、"ton"はイギリス、アメリカの度量衡における「トン」を指し、

イギリスにおいては、2,240ポンド、1,016キログラムに相当する重量

アメリカにおいては、2,000ポンド、940キログラムに相当する重量

となり、それぞれ"long ton"（大トン）、"short ton"（小トン）と呼ばれると英和辞書にもあります。（実にややこしい！）

引用元はBBCニュースですからイギリスということになり、敢えて"tonne"というメートル法の度量衡を指す単語を使ったということになります。本文中、ダメになった食品の重量については3,900万キログラムとありますから、約38,000大トン（38,000 long ton）、39,000メートルトン（39,000 tonne）となり、いずれにしても「大量」であることには変わりありませんので、"tons of 〜"でも"tonnes of 〜"でも、どちらでもいいようなものですが・・・。

ちなみに、"tonne"、"ton"の語源は大きな酒樽を意味する"tun"が変化したものとの説明が見えます。この"tun"はトンネルを指す"tunnel"の語源でもあります。

trade dress

2025年、"6 7"（six seven）というコトバが流行し、当ブログでも取り上げましたが、今年になってその流行語にあやかったチキンナゲットが発売されたそうです。

数字の6と7を形どったナゲットだそうですが、似たような商品をまた別のメーカーが販売し、商標権の侵害で法廷闘争になっているというニュースを読みました。

Two food service companies are in court over who gets to rule the roost on "6-7" chicken nuggets.

Perdue Foods is suing John Soules Foods after both companies launched frozen chicken nugget products inspired by the popular slang term "6-7." The nuggets are in the shape of 6's and 7's.

記事によりますと、訴えた側の会社は、

trade dress infringement

を主張しているとのことですが、商標権の侵害（trademark infringement）というのは聞いたことがありますが、"trade dress infringement"というのは初めて聞きます。

この"trade dress"の定義は、

the overall image of a product used in its marketing or sales that is composed of the nonfunctional elements of its design, packaging, or labeling (as colors, package shape, or symbols)

というもので、商品の形状や包装などの外観に関わるものを言うようです。

問題になっている両社のチキンナゲットは、数字の6と7を模した形状が同じであるということのほか、包装パッケージもデザインが酷似しているようです。

消費者の誤認を招く、との主張は商標権侵害の訴えでよく聞くものですが、商標ドレス、またトレードドレスと訳される概念は今日の記事で初めて知った次第です。

Thucydides trap

トランプ米大統領が7年振りに中国を訪問し、習近平主席と会談しました。

会談の冒頭において習主席が言及した"Thucydides trap"という言葉が注目されています。

Thucydidesはギリシャの歴史家で、ペロポネソス戦争に関する著述で知られます。ペロポネソス戦争は前4世紀、ギリシャの覇権を巡ってスパルタとアテネが争った戦争であると世界史の教科書にも出てきます。台頭するアテネ、それを脅威に感じたスパルタ、その関係性が戦争の契機となったと言われており、これをアメリカの政治学者が米中関係になぞらえて、"Thucydides trap"（テュキディデスの罠）と言い始めたということです。

In his opening remarks to Trump at the bilateral meeting, Xi mentioned the Thucydides Trap.

It's a political term popularised by American scholar Graham Allison that has been used to describe the US-China relationship.

経済、軍事力において台頭する中国、大国としての影響力も衰えが見られる米国、2国間の関係はアテネとスパルタに似ているという訳です。習氏は両国が"Thucydides trap"を乗り越えなければならないと発言、敵対するのではなくパートナーとしてありたいということのようです。

"Thucydides trap"という言葉が初めて使われたのは2012年だそうですから随分前の話ですね。

月周回のミッションを完了したNASAの宇宙ロケット「オリオン」が週末、地球に無事帰還しました。

帰還の模様はライブ配信されたそうです。

Artemis II’s return to terra firma

と表現されている箇所があります。

"terra firma"とはラテン語で、英語に逐語訳すれば"solid land"、（海や空に対しての）大地、陸地の意味であると辞書に載っています。ここでは（宇宙空間に対しての）地球という意味で使われていると思われます。

一方、同じくオリオンの帰還を取り上げている別の記事では以下のようなくだりがあります。

If all goes according to plan, the spacecraft will splash down at 8:07 p.m. EDT (0007 GMT on April 11) in the Pacific Ocean, not far off the coast of San Diego — the same general area where the uncrewed Artemis 1 moon mission came down in December 2022. この記事では、

と書かれていて、オリオンのカプセルは「陸地」（terra firma）ではなく、海洋に着水、とあります。

"terra"というラテン語は語源的には、乾いた（dry）、という意味があるそうです。従って、海洋の"wet"に対して、"dry"な陸地という対比になります。

余談ですが、古典ラテン語で地球は、

orbis terrarum（もしくは、orbis terrae）

と言います。

"terra firma"という表現はルネッサンス以降において科学や哲学などの学術分野で使われるようになった新ラテン語（近代ラテン語）の表現とされます。

tenterhook

週末の為替相場のニュースで、日米が円安に対する「レートチェック」を実施、これを受けて対ドル円相場が一時急上昇した、ということを聞きました。

「レートチェック」なる用語を聞いたことが無かったので、いわゆる為替介入のことか、というくらいに思っていたのですが、厳密には為替介入に至る前段階とも言うべきアクションだそうです。

ロイターの記事を読んでみました。

世界情勢を受けて市場は刻々と変化するものですが、記事中、

markets remained on tenterhooks 

というくだりがあります。

この"tenterhook"という単語を知りませんでした。

辞書を引くと、"tenterhook"とは布張り鉤（釘）とあり、"on tenterhook"という表現は、

気がかりで、気がもめて、不安で

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味で用いられるとあります。

"tenterhook"という単語は"tenter"（布張り）と"hook"（鉤）とに分解できますが、"tenter"というのはテントと同じで、幕になる生地を伸ばし、成形、乾燥させる機械を指します。テントを意味する単語"tent"は広げる、伸ばすという意味のラテン語動詞tendereから来ています。

その布張り機械で布生地を張り伸ばすためのですが、"on tenterhook"というフレーズはピンと伸ばされた布生地の如く、緊張状態、あるいはストレスのかかった状況にあるということから、次に何が起こるのか、どうなってしまうのか、といった不安や気がもめる、やきもきする状態を意味するようになったというものです。

tunnel vision

昨日に続き、アメリカがデンマーク領グリーンランドを領有を主張している話題です。

グリーンランド、デンマーク両国の首脳がホワイトハウスを訪問し、ヴァンス副大統領、ルビオ国務長官と会談しましたが、物別れに終わった模様です。

関連のオピニオン記事では、トランプ大統領のグリーンランドへの執着（fixation）を国際社会にとっての脅威であると非難しています。

曰く、トランプ大統領の視野狭窄（tunnel vision）は甚だしいものがある、と。

視野狭窄（tunnel vision）というのは目の病気の名称であり、視野の一部が欠けたり、対象の周辺が見え難くなる症状を指します。この"tunnel vision"という表現は、ひとつの事に執着し、周囲が見えなくなる（見ようとしない）、という思考の傾向を指すのにも使われます。

trash

米バージニア州で、閉店後の酒店に一匹のアライグマが侵入、店内を荒らした挙句、酔っぱらって大の字になって寝ているのを出勤した店員が発見したというニュースが話題です。

店内は棚から落ちて割れてしまった酒瓶が散乱した状態だったそうで、アライグマはそれを飲んで酔っ払ってしまったと考えられるということです。

He was trashed!

A “very intoxicated” raccoon went on a drunken rampage inside a Virginia liquor store — then passed out face-first in the bathroom, local officials said.

さて、引用した記事には"trash"という単語が出てきます。

"trash"とは、くず、がらくたを意味する名詞ですが、動詞の意味には、

手当たり次第に壊す（= vandalize）

というものがあるとは知りませんでした。

また、引用記事の冒頭にも"trash"が使われており、"He was trashed!"の"He"とは他ならぬアライグマを指していますが、ここでの"trashed"は俗語の表現で、

Drunk or intoxicated.

Extremely tired; exhausted.

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という意味であり、つまりは酔っぱらっている、ぐったりしている、という意味です。これも知りませんでしたねぇ。

three-peat

米メジャーリーグのワールドシリーズをドジャースが制覇、ファンの皆さんはお祭り騒ぎですね。

山本由伸投手がMVPを獲得、大谷翔平選手も大活躍とあって、日本人選手たちの活躍は日米首脳会談でも話題になりました。

週明けのニュースを見ていますと、

という見出しが目に留まりました。

"three-peat"とは一体？

The Dodgers had only captured their second consecutive World Series title less than 48 hours earlier, but superstar Shohei Ohtani is already thinking about winning a third. 

Ohtani was taking part in the Dodgers’ championship parade in Hollywood on Monday when he was interviewed by Spectrum SportsNet LA.

He was asked if winning World Series championships was the “new norm” after Los Angeles had won back-to-back titles. 

“I’m already thinking about the third time we’re going to do this,” Ohtani replied through an interpreter.

記事を読むと想像が付きますが、"three-peat"とは、

三連覇

のことです。

"three"と"repeat"のかばん語となっています。

正直なところ、こんな単語があるとは知りませんでした。

「三連覇」を英語で、と言われたら、

three consecutive wins

とか訳していたと思いますが、今度からは"three-peat"と訳します（笑）

tomahawk

先週金曜日の1語は"bazooka"、今日の1語が"tomahawk"と戦争に使われる兵器が連続しますが、ウクライナが米国にトマホークミサイルの供与を求めているというニュースがトップで報じられています。

WASHINGTON — Kremlin tyrant Vladimir Putin “is in a weak position” and fearful that the US will finally send Ukraine some Tomahawk missiles that can cut deep into Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday.

Zelensky had met with President Trump on Friday — a day after Trump held a call with Putin — and pushed to buy the much-sought-after long-range missiles, although he left the White House meeting empty-handed.

トマホークは射程距離2500キロ以上という巡航ミサイルでウクライナがこれを使えばロシア国内の軍事中枢を破壊することも可能だそうです。故にロシアとウクライナ間の戦争の局面を大きく変える可能性があるとも言われているのですが、トランプ大統領はウクライナへの供与には慎重になっているそうです。

このトマホーク（Tomahawk）は元は北米インディアンの使うまさかり（斧；hatchet）のことであると辞書の解説にあります。ランダムハウス英和辞書の図版では木の持ち手に石斧が取り付けられたようなものです。

"Tomahawk"という単語は北米インディアンであるアルゴンキン族の言葉に由来するそうです。アルゴンキン語の綴りはtamahaacというもので、切り離す（道具）という意味だそうです。

スペルの-hawkという部分がタカ（hawk）を想起させるのですが関係無いようです。

troll

第2次トランプ政権下、トランプ氏はホワイトハウスのリノベーションを進めているそうで、大統領執務室に金ピカの装飾を施したり、アメリカ国旗掲揚のポールの新規追加、宴会場の建設などが計画されています。

その一環で、歴代大統領の肖像を掲げる回廊、"Presidential Walk of Fame"がこのほど公開されたそうですが、バイデン前大統領の写真は肖像ではなく、オートペン（autopen）の写真が掲示されているそうです。

オートペン（autopen）とは手書き署名の代わりに機械が本物そっくりの署名をしてくれるというもので、バイデン氏が自署せず、オートペンが多用されているということが取り沙汰され、大統領の署名が量産されていると揶揄されたものです。

高尚であるはずの肖像を機械の写真にすげ替えるとは相当の皮肉を込めた仕打ちです。

引用した記事のタイトルでは、

Trump "Walk of Fame" trolls Biden with autopen signature in place of portrait

とありますが、ここで使われている"troll"という単語を改めて取り上げたいと思います。

「改めて」というのは以前取り上げたからですが、14年前の投稿で取り上げた時の"troll"の意味合いは、主にインターネット空間における「荒らし」の行為を指すというものでした。

この"troll"の意味合いは、疑似餌で流し釣りをするという元の意味から生まれたものと言われており、ネット掲示板などにおいて、敢えて刺激的な内容の投稿をすることで他人を挑発、議論に食い付かせるという行為を"troll"というようになったものです。

しかし、上記の記事タイトルの用法は、ネット上の「荒らし」行為というのとは違っているように思われましたので、改めて取り上げたという次第です。

そもそも、ネット上の「荒らし」行為という意味自体、古い辞書の"troll"のエントリには載っていないのですが、14年前は新語的な扱いがされていたと記憶します。

時代は流れ、ネット掲示板の全盛時代も過ぎ去り、今やSNS全盛の時代で"troll"という表現もあまり聞かなくなったようにも思います。

Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）では、"troll"の意味として、

to harass, criticize, or antagonize (someone) especially by provocatively disparaging or mocking public statements, postings, or acts

という定義を載せていますが、これはネット空間での挑発という行為を指す"troll"の意味をより一般化したものではないかと思われます。

言葉の意味というものは時代の変遷とともに変化していくものですが、"troll"に関してはネット空間、特にネット掲示板で煽るような投稿をする行為を意味していたところが、ネットに限らず他人を中傷する行為を指す意味に一般化されたように思われます。

これを読んでいるアナタ、もしかしてトイレの便座に座りながら読んでいませんか！？

トイレに座ってスマホを触るのは痔になるからやめた方が、と言っても余計なお世話！？ですね。

しかし、イギリスで行われた医学的な研究ではトイレでのスマホ利用と痔疾の関連が示されたということですから、耳を傾けた方が良いかも知れません。

People who take a mobile phone to the loo should keep to a two TikTok limit, according to doctors who found that toilet scrollers are more prone to haemorrhoids than phoneless lavatory-goers.

トイレでのスマホ利用と痔の関連についての記事は以前も取り上げたことがあります。便座に座っている時間が長いと肛門周りの血管が圧迫されることが原因です。

さて、上記に引用した記事に、

というくだりがありますが、"throne"は便座を指しています。「玉座」を意味する単語ですが、こんな意味もあったんですね。

手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsの解説によると、

というところからだそうです。なるほど。

tchotchke

不法移民の国外退去を推し進めるアメリカで、フロリダ州では2番目となる移民収容施設の計画が進んでいるそうです。

名付けて、Deportation Depot。

州の共和党が施設のプロモーション用に作成したグッズは、ホームセンターのHome Depotのロゴデザインを模したものになっており、Home Depotが商標権の侵害と訴えた結果、販売が中止されるという騒動があった模様です。

The Republican Party of Florida on Saturday removed a line of deportation-themed shirts, hats and other tchotchkes for sale on its website that mimicked The Home Depot’s logo.

記事の中でちょっと変わったスペルの、

tchotchke

という単語が出てきます。

"tchotchkes"というのは、人目を引く風変わりなおもちゃ（ランダムハウス英和辞書）という意味で、実用品というよりもガラクタ、いわゆるノベルティといったものを指す単語です。イディッシュ語から来ています。

Not everyone agrees on what a tchotchke is. The word derives from the Yiddish word tshashke and is used to describe a trinket, or knick-knack, or bauble. When we asked our audience, for example, one person said that a tchotchke needs to be smaller than your palm. Some people call tchotchkes junk, and say they’re things you don’t want. But I think we can all agree that a tchotchke isn’t necessarily an item with no function (it can, for example, be the cat-shaped vase I’m currently staring at) but it is not an item that is function-forward.

人工知能（AI）のお蔭で人間がやらなくてもよくなる仕事が出て来ると言われています。かく言う小生も勤務先で導入されているAIを使ってみて、さもありなんとも思わされるところはあります。

小生はもう歳寄りなので（！？）、何とか定年まで勤め上げて逃げ切ろうなどと不埒なことを考えていますが、若い人はそうも行かないでしょう。

今日読んだ記事によると、いわゆるZ世代の若者はAIの脅威を敏感に感じ取っており、AIにとって替わられない仕事に目を向けているという調査報告があるようです。

では、AIが取って替わることのできない仕事とは何か？

記事では若者が"trade work"、"trade career"、"trade jobs"に目を向けていると続きます。

"trade"というとカタカナでも「トレード」という為か、交易や貿易、といった日本語がまず思い浮かびます。勿論その意味もあるのですが、ここでの"trade"は、

An occupation, especially one requiring skilled labor; craft

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という定義であり、つまりは職人仕事のことを指します。

手に職を付けると言いますが、AIに奪われない仕事ということでは特定の技術、「ものづくり」（craft）しかないということのようです。

多くの若者が大学の学位だけではキャリアが保証されないという危機感を持っているということは、大学のあり方も将来変わってくるかも知れません。

トランプ大統領がヒラリー・クリントン氏を、

と罵った、という見出しが目に留まりました。

初めて聞く表現ですが、面白いと思ったので取り上げます。

まずは、どういうコンテクストでこの発言が飛び出したかというところから。

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday released a slew of documents that she said implicate members of the Obama administration for “treasonous” behavior during the 2016 election.

The claims confuse the allegation that Russia interfered in the 2016 election with the idea that Russia actively tried to change results by hacking into voting systems.

トランプ氏は10年近くも前になる、2016年の大統領選の時のことを持ち出して、当時のオバマ大統領やクリントン氏が大統領選に干渉したとの主張を突然展開し、反逆罪ものだと言い始めたようです。

かなり唐突な感じですが、これはEpstein事件で自身の名前が取り沙汰されていることから関係者や世間の目を逸らすのが目的ではないかと報じられています。

さて、"crooked as 3$ bill"という発言の箇所です。

TRUMP: They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever even imagined, even in other countries.

So President Obama, it was his concept, his idea, but he also got it from crooked Hillary Clinton, crooked as a $3 bill.

オバマ元大統領、クリントンの両氏を痛烈に批判しているくだりですが、クリントン氏が"crooked as 3$ bill"だと言っています。

こんな表現は辞書に見当たらないだろうと思っていたところ意外にも、ランダムハウス英和辞書では"three-dollar bill"というエントリがあり、

他人の名をかたる者、変人、同性愛者

という意味を載せています。そして、

phony as a three-dollar bill（全くインチキな）

queer as a three-dollar bill（どこから見ても［正真正銘の］ホモ）

という2つの用例を載せています。（2つ目の用例は今の時代、やや問題ありそうです。）

実のところ、米ドル札に「3ドル札」（3$ bill）なるものは存在しません。

そこからいかがわしい、ありえない、というような意味合いが生じたものと思われますが、実例としては"crook"や"phony"といった形容詞の意味を強めるのに「3ドル札」が使われています。

余談ですが、「3ドル札」というものは存在しませんが、「2ドル札」というのは存在し、1ドルや10ドルの紙幣と比べるとあまり流通しておらず、レアな紙幣として知られます。この2ドル札を昔知り合いから貰ったのですが、家の中で何処にやってしまったものか分からなくなったことを思い出しました。

time blindness

約束の時間にいつも遅れてやって来る、あるいは仕事や提出物の締め切りをいつも守れない、という人がいます。

本人は約束や締め切りを認識はしており、決して悪気があって守らない訳ではないのですが、結果としてほとんど常に遅延してしまうということで、時に人間関係に影を落とすことにもなってしまいます。

そうした人について、

time blindness

という言葉があるということを知りました。

時間に対する盲目、ということですが、日本語ではカタカナでタイムブラインドネス、あるいは「時間盲」、などという訳語がネットに散見されます。

定着した用語ではないのかも知れませんが、"time blindness"は時間の経過に対する認識の欠如や、作業や移動にかかる時間を見積もる能力に問題がある、一種の臨床症状と定義されるようです。

特にADHD（注意欠陥多動性障害）の患者に見られるという報告もあるようです。

But if someone frequently struggles with lateness, is it possible something deeper is going on? Well, yes. Mental health experts previously told USA TODAY that "time blindness" is indeed a legitimate experience, especially for people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD.

"Time blindness is a difficulty with a perception of time, how much time is passed, how much time it's going to take to do something, and it can be quite impairing to people," Stephanie Sarkis, a psychotherapist and author specializing in ADHD, anxiety and narcissistic abuse, previously told USA TODAY. "It is a real thing that's been researched."

People with time blindness struggle to keep track of and estimate time. It's harder for them to gauge how long it will take to complete tasks or how long it will take to arrive somewhere.

時間（time）という単語と盲目（blindness）という単語が結び付くというのは妙な感じがしましたが、英語の"blind"には目が見えないという意味の他、行き当たりばったりや当てずっぽうといった無計画性を指す表現でもあることを考えると、"time blindness"という用語には理があると言えます。

toe-curling

唐突ですが、"toe-curling"という表現をご存知でしょうか？

爪先（toe）を巻き上げる（curl）、あるいは丸くする、というのが字句通りの訳になると思いますが、不快感を催すとか、嫌な気分にさせるというような意味で使われるようです。

この表現を知りませんでしたので、英紙デーリーメールの見出し（以下）に使われているのを見て、これは何だ？となった訳です。

記事の内容はというと、認知機能の低下が取り沙汰されていたバイデン前大統領に関して最近暴露本を出すというCNNのJake Tapper氏のことを批判して"toe-curling"と言っているものなんですが、一応記事を以下に引用します。

批判しているのはウォールストジャーナルで、同紙が2024年にバイデン氏の健康、認知機能の問題を取り上げた際にはTapper氏はそれを否定するような立場を取っていた、というのです。

つまり、今頃になって立場を変えて暴露本を出すようなTapper氏の挙動は不可解である、嫌悪感を催す、というのです。

ちなみに、"toe-curling"の表現は記事のタイトルだけで、本文中には出てきません。

以下（やはり記事タイトルですが）は、政治家の失言の話です。

この"toe-curling"という表現は上記に見られるように形容詞的に使われることが多いようです。

手元の英和辞書には載っておりませんでしたが、ネット検索では以下のような定義がされています。

making you feel extremely embarrassed and ashamed for someone else

If you describe something as toe-curling, you mean that it makes you feel very embarrassed.

他人を当惑させる、傍にいる人にとてもバツの悪い思い、恥ずかしい思いをさせるような、という意味合いですが、そういう思いをする時に、は足の先を丸めたくなるようなものでしょうか？

よく分からないところではありますが、英語国民は不快な感情を覚えると爪先が反応する（?!）のかも知れません。

因みにイギリス英語の表現のようです。

日本語には「片腹痛い」という表現がありますが、「片腹」は元々「傍ら」、つまり傍にいる人のことだといいます。当人の言動が傍にいる人には滑稽で苦々しく感じられるという場合に使われますが、"toe-curling"という表現に通じるものがあるように思います。

toupee

今日の1語、"toupee"というのはカツラのことです。

カツラというと"wig"という単語がまず思い浮かびますが、"toupee"は男性用のカツラを指すと辞書にあります。

少し前のニュースになりますが、カツラに違法薬物のコカインを隠して渡航しようとした男が逮捕されたという記事から引用です。

A Colombian man was arrested for attempting to smuggle cocaine worth thousands under his toupee, officials announced on Monday.

The suspect was caught before taking a flight to Amsterdam from Cartagena's Rafael Nunez International Airport, according to Reuters and Sky News.

"toupee"という単語はそのスペルからフランス語のように見えますが、その通り、フランス語toupetから来ているそうで、toupetとは髪の毛の房、前髪を指します。

このことからも、"toupee"は頭全体に被るような大きなカツラというよりも、髪の毛が薄くなった一部を覆う、部分的なものを指すようです。

頭頂部（top）の髪の足りない部分を覆うものであり、添え髪とか入れ髪などと呼ばれるそうですが、要は薄くなった箇所、禿を隠すものです。

"top"という単語はゲルマン語系ですが、ドイツ語でおさげの髪を意味するZopfという単語と同語源とされます。

Teflon Don

今日の朝刊、1面のトップ記事は「米中　関税115%引き下げ」でした。（産経新聞）

トランプ大統領が中国に対し追加関税を次々と発動、最終的に145%という関税率に達し、対する中国側も米国に報復関税を課すなど泥沼のような状況となっていましたが、ジュネーブで行われた米中両政府の会談で関税の115%引き下げを合意したというものです。

90日間の暫定措置とは言うものの、最悪の景気後退を免れて関係者と市場は一抹の安堵に包まれたと報じられています。

上記はポリティコ紙より引用しました。多くの関係者が感じているであろうことですが、

Even Teflon Don can’t outrun economic reality.

という思いです。

"Teflon Don"のDonはトランプ氏のファーストネーム「Donald」を指しているのは明らかです。

そして、"Teflon"は、これもご存知のようにフライパンなどに使われる表面加工の「テフロン」であり、これは商標です。

この"Teflon Don"という表現は実のところ、かつてアメリカ国内で暗躍したマフィアのボス、John Gottiを指したものだったそうです。数々の犯罪を首謀した罪で起訴されたものの、裁判官や陪審を買収したり脅すなどして有罪を免れたといいます。

また、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン）によりますと、レーガン元大統領（Donald Reagan）も"Teflon Don"と呼ばれたそうですが、政権に対する様々な批判も功を奏さず、全く受け付けない大統領の姿勢を揶揄してついたあだ名だそうです。

トランプ大統領も批判は枚挙に暇がありませんし、訴追もされていますが、それらは全く本人の言動に影響するところがありません。

故に"Teflon Don"呼ばわりされる訳ですが、そのトランプ氏をもってしても、米中貿易摩擦がもたらす米国経済への悪影響をはね飛ばすことは出来なかった、ということですね。

「テフロン」のあだ名が付いた政治家はアメリカの大統領ばかりではありません。16年前のことになりますが、日本のあの首相も"Teflon PM"と呼ばれました。

third wheel

飛行機で旅に出掛ける夫婦。座席は二人並んで、というのが普通でしょうが、そうでないという人もいるとか。

夫婦仲が悪いという訳でもなく、またいわゆる倦怠期というのでもないようです。

単に夫は窓側の席が、妻は通路側が好き、ということで、真ん中を空けて座るのだそうです。

ところで、引用記事に、

tries to make the in-flight third wheel feel less uncomfortable

というくだりがありますが、何を言っているのかよく分かりませんでした。

どうやら"third wheel (feel)"という表現に特別な意味がありそうですが、辞書を引いても見当たらない表現です。

"third wheel"というのは3番目の車輪ということですが、恋人や仲の良い2人がいる時、そこに加えて3番目になる人のことを指すようです。つまり「お邪魔虫」、余計な邪魔者という意味で使われるのですが、これは知りませんでした。

真ん中の席に座った赤の他人は、両脇に座っているのがカップルだと解ると幾分居心地が悪くなるものです。そのことを指して"third wheel (feel)"と言っているのです。

新幹線にも普通車では3人掛けのシートがありますが、席の真ん中しか空いておらず、仕方なく着座したところ、両脇の2人は連れ合いで何となく居心地が悪い、なんてことがあります。

"third wheel"は二輪で間に合っているところに余計な3つ目の車輪が加わるということで、そもそも無くても良いもの、無用な存在、という含意があるようです。

類似の表現に、"fifth wheel"というものもあるようですが、こちらも4輪の自動車に5番目の車輪ということで、不要なものを言うのに用いられるようです。

third rail

実業家のイーロン・マスク氏がリストラの大ナタを振るっている政府効率化省（DOGE）の話題は先日も取り上げましたが、マスク氏の効率化目標は1兆ドルの歳出削減だそうです。

巨額の歳出削減の目論見がどのように達成され得ると試算しているのか、素人には分かりません。引用する記事によると、大量の政府職員を解雇した次に見据えているのは1.6兆ドル超ともされる社会保障費だそうです。

記事では想定されるマスク氏の取り組みは"third rail"だと言っていますが、この表現を初めて見ました。

"third rail"とは「3番目のレール」ということになりますが、鉄道の専門用語で第3軌条という訳語が英和辞書には見えます。これは電車が走る2本のレールに並行して敷設される3番目のレールのことで、電気を供給するためのものだそうです。

英和辞書の説明はここで終わってしまうのですが、"third rail"には政治のコンテクストで使われ、その意味合いは、

A subject that tends to be avoided because of its offensive or controversial nature

(American Heritage Dictionary)

というもので、議論を呼ぶ課題故に政治家が避けたがるテーマ、話題のことです。

電気を供給するための"third rail"は、感電の危険性があるため、設置箇所には警告の表示がされていることが多いものです。つまり触れれば感電、ヘタをすると死ぬかもしれないということですから、触れないのが一番、ということで、これを政治のコンテクストで使うようになったというのは興味深いものがありますね。

マスク氏は米国の社会保障費用にムダ削減の可能性を見出している訳ですが、社会保障費を減らすような政策提言をすれば国民、有権者の猛反発を浴びることになる、というのが周りの見立てであるということなんですね。記事では中間選挙を見据えて、共和党員からは不安の声が、対立する民主党からは（自党に有利な状況と）楽観的な見方が広がっているとあります。

日本においても、昨日、石破首相は高額療養費の上限負担の見直しを凍結すると国会で答弁しましたが、これなんかも"third rail"の類いと言えるでしょう。夏の参院選対策かと記者に問われた石破氏は否定してはいましたが。
