trade dress

Two food service companies are in court over who gets to rule the roost on "6-7" chicken nuggets.

Perdue Foods is suing John Soules Foods after both companies launched frozen chicken nugget products inspired by the popular slang term "6-7." The nuggets are in the shape of 6's and 7's.

Perdue is alleging false designation of origin, unfair competition and trademark and trade dress infringement.
(Melina Khan. '6-7' chicken nuggets ruffle feathers. Why Perdue is suing a competitor. USA TODAY. July 2, 2026.)

trade dress infringement

the overall image of a product used in its marketing or sales that is composed of the nonfunctional elements of its design, packaging, or labeling (as colors, package shape, or symbols)
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Teflon Don

President Donald Trump’s deal to dramatically slash tariffs on China thrilled markets and offered a sliver of relief for businesses across the country. It also revealed an important lesson: Even Teflon Don can’t outrun economic reality.

The deal brokered in Geneva, in which both sides agreed to lower tariff rates by triple-digit percentages, came as anxiety mounted about a potential downturn in the U.S.
(Trump and China call off the divorce. Politico. May 11, 2025.)

Even Teflon Don can’t outrun economic reality.

autopen

Dozens of executive orders signed by former President Joe Biden were authorized with identical autopen signatures — raising crucial questions about whether he was fully aware of what he was signing, critics say.

The conservative Heritage Foundation’s Oversight Project uncovered the situation, prompting Biden detractors such as Republican Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to suggest it could be used to challenge the legitimacy of orders that the 82-year-old former president signed, especially given the concerns about his cognition.
(Ryan King. Biden used ‘autopen signature’ on many official WH docs, raising concerns over his awareness. New York Post. March 9, 2025.)

A mechanical device used for writing imitations of a personal signature.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

plan B

The University of Connecticut started providing Plan B through new vending machines on campus in early February following the passage of a 2023 law expanding contraception access in the state.

The state law — introduced after the overturning of Roe v. Wade — allows licensed pharmacists to prescribe contraception at pharmacies across the state following a brief training program and also permits over-the-counter medications like the emergency contraceptive Plan B to be sold in vending machines.
(Caitlin McCormack. UConn installs emergency ‘Plan B’ contraception vending machines on campus. New York Post. February 16, 2025.)

started providing Plan B through new vending machines on campus

over-the-counter medications like the emergency contraceptive Plan B

an alternative plan of action for use if the original plan should fail
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

ugg

An Australian ugg-boot company has changed its brand for foreign customers following a lengthy legal battle with an American rival.

Ugg Since 1974 is owned by Australian Leather and was sued by Deckers Outdoor Corporation for its use of "ugg."

Now, after almost 10 years since the legal battle began, it's been forced to rebrand as Since 1974 for customers outside Australia.
(Lindsay Dodgson. Australian ugg-boot maker forced to rebrand after trademark battle with American rival. MSN. January 14, 2025.)

organza

Julien's Auctions announced on Sunday that Princess Diana's ballerina-length evening dress by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury that she wore in Florence, Italy in April 1985 and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986, along with a matching illustration, sold for $1,148,080. The winning bid was 11 times its original estimate of $100,000.

According to Julien's Auctions, "The dress with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her being a patron of The English National Ballet."
(Stephanie Petit. Princess Diana's Dress Sells for a Record-Breaking $1.1 Million at Auction — 11 Times the Estimated Price. People. December 18, 2023.)

a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow

bowser

The survey found that five per cent of Australians had stolen items at the supermarket self-checkout, while four per cent had lied about what they had scanned - telling the computer it was weighing onions rather than avocados, for example.

The average Australian spends $740 a month on groceries – increasing by seven per cent in the past 12 months, according to Finder's Consumer Sentiment Tracker.

Finder's research showed four per cent of Aussies had driven away from the bowser without paying for fuel in the past year, while two per cent had left a cafe or restaurant without paying.
(Adam Vidler. Aussies stealing from supermarkets, servos, new research shows. 9news.com.au. October 23, 2023.)

four per cent of Aussies had driven away from the bowser without paying for fuel

a pump usually at a service station for dispensing liquid fuels, especially gasoline
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Sylvanus Freelove Bowser(1854 - 1938)

spam

This is the best type of spamming.

The canned meat brand Spam has announced it’s partnering with the humanitarian organization Convoy of Hope to send food to Hawaiian residents who have been affected by the deadly wildfires ravaging the state.
(Emily Lefroy. Spam sends food to Maui amid devastating wildfires: ‘We see you and love you’. New York Post. August 16, 2023.)

To send (a message) indiscriminately to multiple mailing lists, individuals, or newsgroups.

gunk

Earwax is produced inside your ears to help protect them from germs and keep them clean, according to one expert.

But Dr Samantha Wild, a GP at Bupa Health Clinics, says while it usually comes out of your ears on its own, too much can cause a blockage.

Many people know the satisfaction of using a cotton bud to rid your ears of gunk.

But the little tools, also known by the brand name Q-tips, may do more harm than good.
(Hannah Mcdonald. I'm a GP - here are six things that might be giving you ear wax. The Daily Mail. February 23, 2023.)

gunk

chyron

(television) chyron

Newsmax host Grant Stinchfield on Friday criticized President Joe Biden for stopping to pick a dandelion for first lady Jill Biden while they walked to the Marine One helicopter on the White House Ellipse, saying that if the flower is blown "then everybody starts sneezing."

As Stinchfield remarked on the president's gesture for his wife of 44 years, the television chyron read: "Biden bizarrely gives Jill a dandelion."
John L. Dormanmay. Newsmax host criticizes Biden for picking a dandelion for the first lady. Business Insider. May 1, 2021.)

skivvies

Scientists plan to bury thousands of pairs of underwear in gardens across Switzerland to measure “soil health,” according to a report.

Researchers from the agricultural institute Agroscope will send 2,000 pairs of cotton undies to volunteers to cover in dirt for a project dubbed Proof by Underpants, according to Science Focus.

They’ll dig them up one to two months later and examine how much damage organisms — including fungi, insects, and worms — have done to the skivvies. The more holes, the healthier the soil, according to researchers.

The University of Zurich, which is contributing to the study, said the goal is to “shine a spotlight on the essential but rather unknown and fascinating universe below our feet.”
(Natalie O'Neill. Why Swiss scientists are burying thousands of pairs of underwear. New York Post. April 21, 2021.)

jaws of life

jaws of life

Golfing legend Tiger Woods sustained multiple injuries in a major car accident on Tuesday. According to a statement by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, which has since been walked back, paramedics used the "jaws of life" to extricate him from his vehicle.

According to "HowStuffWorks.com," the "jaws of life" is technically a trademarked brand of tools. However, the term "jaws of life" more generally refers to hydraulic rescue tools that are used in difficult situations like catastrophic crashes.
(Sam Dorman. What are the 'jaws of life' LA police initially said pulled Tiger Woods out of his wrecked vehicle? Fox News. February 24, 2021.)

jaws of death

perspex

Vision has emerged of a woman berating a Sydney bus driver and pounding his screen after being asked to wear a face mask.

Failure to wear a mask on public transport in Greater Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast and Wollongong at the moment could incur a $200 on-the-spot fine.

After being asked to put a mask on, the tracksuit-clad woman pulls out her phone and begins taking photos of the bus driver, prompting him to raise his hand up to protect his face.

She then repeatedly strikes her hand against the bus driver’s screen, yelling “why” with each smack and causing the perspex to shake.
(Natalie Brown. Sydney woman attacks bus driver over mask request. News.com.au. February 9, 2021.)

ラテン語の動詞にperspicio(to see through)というものがありますが、そこから来ているようです。

Tupperware

After a string of dismal earnings and missed expectations last year, Tupperware (TUP) is reporting soaring profits fueled largely by demand from newly minted pandemic chefs.

The company announced on Wednesday that it made $477.2 million in sales in the third quarter of 2020 -- up 14% versus last year. Profits for the quarter jumped to $34.4 million, which is up from $7.8 million last year.

"The pandemic has created a new norm with more people living at home and increased consumer concerns regarding food safety and food storage," CEO Miguel Fernandez said in Wednesday's earnings conference call. "Our ability to help satisfy those new consumer needs was most pronounced in our North American business."

He said sales in the United States and Canada were up 72%, which he said was the highest level of sales growth in the region in more than 20 years.
(David Williams. Tupperware profits and shares soar as more people are eating at home during the pandemic. CNN. October 29, 2020.)

plexiglass

(CNN) — Teachers across the United States are preparing to welcome students back to the classroom. But as coronavirus cases rise, many worry that young children's excitement will quickly turn into fear.

That's why two first grade teachers in DeLand, Florida, decided to transform their students' desks into little Jeeps.

Patricia Dovi, 35, and Kim Martin, 51, of St. Barnabas Episcopal School spent a week redesigning the desks, which feature construction paper tires, headlights and license plates. The desks have three-sided plastic dividers that serve as windshields and side windows as well as sneeze guards.

The desks, which are spaced far apart, are the only place where students are permitted to remove their face masks.

Martin said their goal was to create a space for students to feel comfortable while following health and safety guidelines.

"Our school gave us plexiglass tri-folds, which we felt would overwhelm our little ones. So we took the design and turned them into little Jeeps," Martin told CNN.
(Alaa Elassar. Two Florida teachers turned their students' desks into little Jeeps to make social distancing less scary. CNN. August 23, 2020.)

plexiglass

The generic term plexiglass comes from the trademark name Plexiglas, first used in 1933 by a German chemical company for a transparent acrylic that served as a glass substitute; one of the early uses was in airplane windows. Other trademarked names for acrylic glass include Acrylite, Lucite, and Persplex. In addition to its use in aircraft, plexiglass is used for camera lenses, car light covers, and medical devices for illuminating and visually inspecting interior organs.

A Plexiglass bubble could be the future of dining during the pandemic.

It's called the Plex'Eat, and it's designed to go over patrons' heads as they eat while it hangs from the ceiling. French designer Christophe Gernigon claims it can help protect customers from the coronavirus while they eat indoors.

The chandelier-like shades will cost business owners almost $200 each.

And it's one of the many plastic barriers companies are buying to ensure both customers and employees feel protected from transmission of the coronavirus.

Since President Nixon’s historic “opening to China” in 1972 and President Carter’s formal recognition of the communist regime in Beijing, U.S. policy has been to promote trade and investment with China. I myself was a leader of the first U.S. trade mission to Beijing in 1982. Our strategy then and thereafter was founded on the notion that free global trade and investment would stimulate not only economic growth but also the spread of democracy and peace.

Clinton campaigned for President under the slogan “no coddling of dictators from Baghdad to Beijing,” but as President adopted a policy of “positive engagement,” eventually negotiating to bring China into the World Trade Organization. Of China’s attempts to censor the internet, he joked: “I’d like to see them try to control the internet. It will be like trying to nail jello to the wall.”
(Clyde Prestowitz. America’s Big China Mistake. Washington Monthly. June 7, 2020.)

“I’d like to see them try to control the internet. It will be like trying to nail jello to the wall.”

If you say that something is like trying to nail Jell-O to the wall, you are emphasizing that it is extremely difficult or impossible.

mace

Video footage captured at a Seattle protest on May 30 showed a small child in distress.

The footage was posted online by a man named Evan Hreha, who attended the Black Lives Matter demonstration and said the child in the video had just been maced by the police.

“First person maced is a little girl,” Hreha wrote in a caption alongside the video, originally mistaking the young child for a girl. “What the f— is wrong with you people.”
(Rosie Perper. The Seattle police were accused of macing a 7-year-old boy at a Black Lives Matter protest. The protester who filmed the aftermath was held in jail for 2 days a week later. Business Insider Australia. June 16, 2020.)

Video captured at a Seattle Black Lives Matter protest on May 30 showed a young boy who was said to have been sprayed with mace by the police.
(ibid.)

onesie

(CNN) — The parents of a 16-month-old child face charges for allegedly leaving the toddler in an unlocked and running car as they gambled, and two men also were arrested for allegedly stealing that car and dropping the child off in a parking lot, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said.

Kimberley Cook, 21, told deputies that she and Anthony Blue, 29, left their 16-month-old child in their Chrysler 300 vehicle around 11:30 p.m. on Sunday night, the sheriff's Office said in a statement. At the same time, they allegedly went to a Shell Gas Mart store in Humble, Texas, to play 8 liner machines, the electronic gambling games, according to the sherrif's office in a statement.
(Parents allegedly left their toddler in a running car as they gambled. Then the car was stolen. CNN. January 14, 2020.)

The statement also alleges that Vincent Leon Cannady, 19, and Jabari Jonathan Davis,18, saw the car unlocked and running and stole it.

Cook and Blue discovered their car was missing just after midnight, and police were called.

At about 12:25 a.m., a park ranger closing up MacGregor Park -- 20 miles away in Houston -- saw what he at first thought was an animal walking through the parking lot, Harris County Sheriff Sgt. Ben Beall said. Instead, it was the missing child wearing a onesie and shivering cold in the night.
(ibid.)

the missing child wearing a onesie and shivering cold in the night

onesie

a bodysuit for an infant having a snap closure at the crotch and not covering the legs
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

thumb drive

thumb drive

Before Paul Whelan was detained in Moscow and accused of spying, he was given a thumb drive that he thought held photos of Russian churches but actually contained "state secrets," his lawyer said Tuesday. And Whelan didn't even look at the drive, according to the lawyer, because he was taken into custody immediately.

Whelan, 48, was detained Dec. 28 and is being held in Moscow's Lefortovo prison. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of espionage.
(Laurel Wamsley. American Held In Russia Unwittingly Got Thumb Drive With State Secrets, Lawyer Says. NPR. January 22, 2019.)

A man was stabbed in an apparent road-rage attack after honking his horn at a stopped car in Brooklyn on Thursday night, police said.

The 53-year-old man was driving his blue Volvo on 65th Street near West 5th Street in Bensonhurst at about 5:30 p.m. when he honked at a red Infiniti that was stopped near the intersection, authorities said.

The driver of the Infinity and a passenger then got out of the car and began yelling at the Volvo driver, police said.

They then forced him out of his car, punched him and stabbed him, cops said. They both got back into the Infinity after the attack and sped away, authorities said.
(Man stabbed in road-rage attack after honking at car in Brooklyn. New York Post. January 18, 2019.)

honk

klaxon
