string along

Elsewhere during his CBS Sunday Morning interview, Vance was asked if Iran was “stringing President Trump along,” knowing that the unpopular war and the high gas prices it has caused will be politically damaging for him and the GOP in the midterms.

“No, I don’t think so. Again, I think their system takes a long time to reach consensus,” Vance said.
(Ewan Palmer. JD Vance Makes Embarrassing Confession About Trump’s Failed War Boast. Daily Beast. June 10, 2026.)

Iran was “stringing President Trump along”

string along
Informal
1. To go along with something; agree.
2. To keep (someone) waiting or in a state of uncertainty.
3. To fool, cheat, or deceive.

lay into

Sen. John Fetterman issued a scathing takedown of Graham Platner as the leading Democratic candidate in Maine’s Senate race has become embroiled in a scandal over reports that he sent sexual text messages to women who were not his wife.

In an interview with CNN Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Democrat also laid into Platner over past social media posts that have haunted Platner’s campaign for months. Fetterman likened Platner to a “Nazi sympathizer” over a now-infamous tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Platner has apologized for the past posts and has pleaded ignorance over the meaning of the tattoo, which he has since covered.
(Fetterman calls Platner a ‘creep’ after reports of extramarital sexting. CNN. June 2, 2026.)

crowd out

Excessive screen time is damaging toddlers’ ability to speak, the UK government has warned as it prepares to issue advice to parents for the first time on how to manage screen use in under-fives.

Research has found that children aged two with the highest screen use – about five hours a day – could say significantly fewer words than those with screen use of about 44 minutes a day.

Screen use is now near-universal in early childhood, with 98% of two-year-olds watching screens daily, the research also found.

The education secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said parents and teachers had warned that “too much passive screen time can start to crowd out the talking, play and reading that are so important for children’s language and development in the early years”.
(Jessica Murray. Excessive screen time limits vocabulary of toddlers, experts warn. The Guardian. January 11, 2026.)

crowd out

To force away by taking up space; displace
(American Heritage Dictionary)

pass up

By now, you’ve probably heard about the big headline out of Donald Trump’s trip to the Middle East: The $400 million luxury plane he’s set to receive as a gift from the nation of Qatar. Trump says he wants the plane to become the new Air Force One, but only for the duration of his presidency, after which ownership of the plane would be transferred to Trump’s presidential library.

The whole thing is super shady, and even a lot of conservatives don’t want the president to accept this plane. But Trump says it’s just too good a deal to pass up. In a post on Truth Social, Trump called the new plane a “GIFT, FREE OF CHARGE,” which is definitely not true.
(Jen Psaki. The $400M jet is the tip of the iceberg. Gulf property deals could make Trump millions. MSNBC. May 16, 2025.)

it’s just too good a deal to pass up

"check out"の意味

Some Walmart shoppers are grumbling about the retailer's self-checkout lanes.

The benefit of self-checkout is in the eye of the consumer. For every shopper who is upset there's no self-checkout lane to use – and long lines at registers – there's another one who is upset about having to use self-checkout and sometimes having to wait to do so.

Retailers face a difficult balancing act, said Santiago Gallino, an associate professor of marketing, and of operations, information, and decisions at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

"Too few staffed registers can frustrate customers who prefer traditional checkout, while an over-reliance on self-checkout can introduce inefficiencies and revenue loss," Gallino told USA TODAY.
(Mike Snider. Walmart self-checkout: How retailer's DIY lanes don't check out with some shoppers. USA Today. February 18, 2025.)

self-checkout

Walmart self-checkout: How retailer's DIY lanes don't check out with some shoppers

DIY lanes don't check out with some shoppers

The filmmakers assert that Obama had a nose job ahead of his 2004 run for Senate, that his mother posed for naked photos when she was five weeks pregnant with him and that Bill Ayers nurtured Obama's career. I haven't seen the film, but that all checks out with me. Seems about right. I guess I kinda always assumed something like that, you know?
(Birthers Divided on Whether or Not to Get Behind Ridiculous)

sth check out with sb

To be verified or confirmed; pass inspection: The suspect's story checked out.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

to prove to be consistent or truthful
The description checks with the photograph.
—often used with out
The story checked out.
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

sth check out with sb

sound out

TOKYO, Feb 5 (Reuters) - Nissan looks set to step back from merger talks with rival Honda, two sources said on Wednesday, calling into question a $60 billion tie-up to create the world's no.3 automaker and potentially leaving Nissan to drive its turnaround alone.

Talks between the two Japanese automakers have been complicated by growing differences, according to multiple people familiar with the matter, all of whom declined to be named because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
(Nissan set to step back from merger with Honda, sources say. Reuters. February 6, 2025.)

Reuters reported earlier that Nissan could call off talks after Honda sounded it out about becoming a subsidiary. Nissan baulked as this was a departure from what was originally framed as a merger of equals, one of the people said.
(ibid.)

Honda sounded it out about becoming a subsidiary

sound A out (about, on 〜)

stump up

However, it wasn’t well received, with the man quickly responding and asking her to reimburse him for the coffee he bought her.

“Hey! I agree – we are too different. Wish you the best. PS. Your coffee was $6.”

He concluded by sharing his Payid number so Emily could transfer him the money.

“Six dollars? He asked me to send him six dollars for my coffee,” she shared on TikTok.

She replied, explaining she had “never heard of someone asking a girl out then asking for the money.” In her video, she stated she had no plans to stump up the cash.
(Man’s $6 demand after coffee date fail exposes relationship issue. New York Post. September 19, 2024.)

lawyer up

The operator of the superyacht that sank during a violent storm off the coast of Italy this week is likely to face legal troubles over the deadly tragedy, according to maritime law experts.

But the success of any potential lawsuit is up for debate.

Three maritime legal experts told Business Insider that the operator and owner behind the now-sunken luxury sailing yacht called the Bayesian should lawyer up in anticipation of possible claims from families of the dead or the survivors themselves.
(Natalie Musumeci. The superyacht tragedy will likely spark legal drama. Business Insider. August 22, 2024.)

the operator and owner… should lawyer up …

gin up

Donald Trump stood before a crowd of supporters in Michigan this week and claimed he had spoken to family members of 25-year-old Ruby Garcia, who was killed last month:

The boyfriend charged in Garcia’s death is originally from Mexico and was in the country illegally. That created a perfect scenario for Trump, a chance to again label immigrants as violent, a chance to again dehumanize them and call them “animals.”

But according to Garcia’s family, Trump was lying.

“He did not speak with any of us, so it was kind of shocking seeing that he had said that he had spoke with us, and misinforming people on live TV,” Garcia’s sister, Mavi Garcia, told the Grand Rapids ABC affiliate.

Trump leveraged Garcia’s tragic death to gin up fear about the southern border. And he lied about speaking with the grieving family so he could appear to give a damn.
(Rex Huppke. Grieving Michigan family says Trump lied about their daughter. Of course he did. USA Today. April 3, 2024.)

Trump leveraged Garcia’s tragic death to gin up fear about the southern border.

gin up

American Heritage Dictionary

To create or produce; work up
To create or produce under false pretenses
To increase or make more active

work up

Apple is switching the iPhone from its proprietary Lightning port to USB-C, and people are going to be really, really angry.

Thanks to the EU, Apple has been forced to adopt the USB-C standard for charging and data transfer for the iPhone 15, replacing the Lightning connector that has been around since 2012. And in those 11 years, people have collected a lot of Lightning cables.
(Charlie Sorrel. Why People Are Getting Worked Up Over the iPhone 15 USB-C Port. Yahoo! News. September 5, 2023.)

(people are) getting worked up over…

people are going to be really, really angree

To arouse the emotion of; excite
(American Heritage Dictionary)

talk up

2023 is set to be the year of Apple’s mixed-reality headset and not much else.

Apple Inc., after seven years of development, is nearly ready to launch its first mixed-reality headset. But the focus on this new product will lead to an otherwise muted 2023.
(Mark Gurman. Apple Will Talk Up Its Mixed-Reality Headset in 2023 But Not Much Else. The Bloomberg. January 8, 2023.)

Apple Will Talk Up Its Mixed-Reality Headset in 2023

clear up

Graeme Souness has called upon FIFA to release conclusive evidence the ball stayed in play in the incident which led to Japan's dramatic winner against Spain and knocked out Germany.

Ao Tanaka completed a stunning turnaround from a Kaoru Mitoma cut-back which initially appeared to have gone out of play. A lengthy VAR check followed the goal, but it sensationally ruled in favour of Japan, the full curvature of the ball not deemed to have crossed the line.

Japan's victory meant they finished top of Group E, with Spain second and Germany, who beat Costa Rica 4-2 in a thriller, sent packing. But with replays of the incident appearing inconclusive, Sky Sports' Souness demanded FIFA showed their evidence for making the decision.
(Graeme Souness questions VAR decision and calls for proof from FIFA over dramatic Japan goal against Spain which knocked out Germany. Sky News.

9.1 Ball out of play

The ball is out of play when:
it has wholly passed over the goal line or touchline on the ground or in the air

"Germany is not a small footballing nation. Why would you create confusion and not want to clear it up immediately?

"Why are FIFA not showing us something that is so controversial? Why aren't they showing it to us? Clear it up for us, please."
(ibid.)

That bit of green between ball and line does not matter. By rule, the ball is only out of play when the entirety of it has fully cleared the plane of the boundary.

In other words, if you were to draw a line perpendicular to the ground — straight up from the end line toward the sky — and that vertical line intersects with any part of the ball, the ball is still in play.

Camera angles that offered a bird’s eye view seemed to show that the ball hadn’t done this; that a sliver of it still hovered above a sliver of the line.
(Henry Bushnell. World Cup 2022: Why Japan’s controversial goal vs. Spain stood despite appearing to go out of play. Yahoo! News. December 2, 2022.)

Clear up, please!"

size up

Prior to invading Ukraine on Feb. 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin sought to foresee the potential U.S. response. As a former KGB operative, Putin honed his skill at sizing up personalities while he was running spy networks in East Germany. He prides himself on his ability to "work and communicate with people," calling himself a "specialist in human relations," a skill he believes is critical to his role as Russian president.

The meeting between Putin and Biden would have certainly been studied by the Chinese in the lead-up to Monday's Biden/Xi conversation on the sidelines of the G-20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. The Chinese are fully aware of the actions Putin took following his discussions with Biden.
(Rebekah Koffler. Having sized up Biden, Putin invaded Ukraine. Taiwan must pray Xi doesn’t make a similar assessment. Fox News. November 14, 2022.)

size up

own up

The mother of Olivia Pratt-Korbel paid tribute to her little shadow' in an emotional video where she pleads with those responsible for her daughter's death to 'own up'.

Cheryl Korbel, whose nine-year-old daughter was shot in their home in Dovecot, Liverpool, broke down as she recalled how much she loved hearing little Olivia talk.
(Matt Powell. Olivia Pratt-Korbel's mother breaks down in emotional plea for her daughter's killer to come forward and 'own up'. Daily Mail. September 6, 2022.)

own up
own to

The president said that al-Zawahiri was killed in Kabul. U.S. government had multiple, independent sources confirming al-Zawahiri's whereabouts at a safehouse, a senior administration official told reporters on a call Monday evening. He was ultimately taken out by a drone at 9:48 p.m. ET Saturday, while he was on the balcony of the safehouse, and his family members were in different rooms of the house. The U.S. government, the senior administration official said, has a high level of confidence that no one else was killed in the strike.

The senior administration official said the president received regular updates as the U.S. government zeroed in on al-Zawahiri. Once the safehouse was located, the president wanted to understand more about the layout of the safehouse's doors and windows to avoid other casualties. In a July 25 meeting, the president authorized a precise, tailored air strike that would minimize civilian deaths as much as possible, the senior administration official said.

He was ultimately taken out by a drone at 9:48 p.m. ET Saturday

stick with

There's finding a career and then there's finding a company you stick with for so long, it breaks a world record, as Walter Orthmann of Brazil broke the world record for longest tenure at the same company, all while turning 100-years-old.

Born in the small Brazilian town of Brusque on April 19, 1922, Orthmann wanted to get a job as a 15-year-old to help with family with financial problems, according to Guinness World Records.
(Jordan Mendoza. 100-year-old man breaks Guinness World Record for working at same company for 84 years. USA Today. May 2, 2022.)

stick with

Through his spokesperson, Kelly thanked (his fans) who stuck by him and supported him with such love... And most of all, he wants to thank God for giving him the strength to get through this.
(USA Today, 2017)

Should President Clinton stick to his goal of making sure 100% of Americans have health insurance coverage?
(New York Times, 1994)

You have to stick with the company.

pull off

One of America’s Most Wanted fugitives credited with pulling off one of the largest bank robberies in the history of Cleveland, Ohio, had spent five decades living a quiet life in a Boston suburb, not far from where the movie investigators say inspired his notorious real-life heist was filmed.
(Danielle Wallace. One of America's most wanted fugitives for 52 years who was inspired by movie identified. Fox News. November 14, 2021.)

pulling off one of the largest bank robberies in the history of Cleveland

Although she was searched repeatedly, Payne said she was able to hide the stone in the hem of a girdle. In the end, police couldn't figure out how she pulled off the heist, though she says she simply stood up and took the ring from a box, despite witnesses swearing she never left her seat.
(Orange County Register, 2015)

With a touchdown catch against the New Orleans Saints, Vikings receiver Randy Moss would become only the fifth player to pull off the feat in 10 straight games.
(Chicago Sun-Times, 2004)

bottle up

to keep (a feeling or emotion) inside instead of expressing it : to hide (a feeling or emotion)
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

While we are not yet out of the pandemic and must adhere to Covid-approriate behaviour, one also needs to "be cognisant of physical and mental health, do exercise/ yoga and spend good time with family", said Dr. Vipul Rastogi, Consultant neuropsychiatrist Medanta hospital, Gurugram, told IANS.

"Do not bottle-up your concerns and emotions. Share your feelings with family and friends and if it doesn't help seek professional help at the earliest," Rastogi added.
(Don't bottle up pandemic-induced stress, start socialising: Experts. The Tribune. October 9, 2021.)

He simply couldn't hide his disappointment or keep his emotions bottled up inside.
(ESPN, 2017)

buy into

Apple’s software chief, Craig Federighi, says he doesn’t “buy into” the criticism that Apple is turning privacy into a luxury good, an accusation that was indirectly leveled at the company by Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

In an interview with The Independent, Federighi dismissed “the luxury good dig,” just a couple weeks after Pichai wrote an op-ed in The New York Times saying that “privacy cannot be a luxury good offered only to people who can afford to buy premium products and services.” While Pichai didn’t name Apple, which has recently advertised the privacy benefits of its $999 phone, there’s no mistaking which company he’s referring to.
(Jacob Kastrenakes. Apple exec dismisses Google CEO’s criticism over turning privacy into a ‘luxury good.’ The Verge. May 27, 2019.)

doesn’t “buy into” the criticism

To believe in, especially wholeheartedly or uncritically
(American Heritage Dictionary)

fact
criticism
notion
idea
concept
theory

I'll buy that.

I don't buy that.

chip away

The Thesaurus Linguae Latinae was one of many big, scholarly projects taken on by the German government in the late 19th century.

Through two World Wars and German reunification, generations of Latin scholars have been chipping away at the same goal: documenting every use of every Latin word from the earliest Latin inscriptions in the 6th century BC up until around 200 AD, when it was in decline as a spoken language. Befitting the comprehensive nature of the project, the scholars will also include some words up to the 6th century AD.
(Byrd Pinkerton. The Ultimate Latin Dictionary: After 122 Years, Still At Work On The Letter 'N.' NPR. May 14, 2016.)

...chipping away at the same goal...

Repeated defeats chipped away at the team’s morale.

To reduce or make progress on something incrementally

We chipped away until the problem was solved.

Renewable energies chip away at coal power, stats show

Renewable energies continued to pick up last year to reach 32.3% of total power generation in the EU, up two percentage points from the previous year, according to the report, published today (30 January).

Total coal power generation fell by 6% across the EU in 2018 and is now 30% below 2012 levels, the analysis found, confirming the rapid decline of coal in electricity generation across most European countries.
(EURACTV. January 31, 2019.)
