Nikki Haley on Thursday sought to clarify her comments about the Civil War one day after a voter in New Hampshire called her out for not mentioning slavery as a cause of the war.

“I mean, of course the Civil War was about slavery,” Haley told radio host Jack Heath Thursday morning.
(Ebony Davis. Haley seeks to clarify Civil War comments as backlash mounts. CNN. December 28, 2023.)

Haley has sought to clarify her remarks since, saying Thursday that “of course the Civil War was about slavery” and arguing that the voter who asked the question was a “Democrat plant.”
(Haley’s Civil War remarks stir backlash at crucial moment for campaign. The Hill. December 28, 2023.)

Democrat plant

American Heritage Dictionary

A person or thing put into place in order to mislead or function secretly, especially:

a. A person placed in a group of spectators to influence behavior.
b. A person stationed in a given location as a spy or observer.
c. A misleading piece of evidence placed so as to be discovered.
d. A remark or action in a play or narrative that becomes important later.

Haley said on Thursday she thought the questioner was "definitely" planted by Democrats to trip her up.
(Nidia Cavazos. Nikki Haley defends leaving slavery out as cause of Civil War after backlash. CBS News. December 28, 2023.)

To station (a person) for the purpose of functioning in secret, as by observing, spying, or influencing behavior

asylum

NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams issued an executive order Wednesday to restrict the flow of migrant charter buses sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to New York City.

Adams said the order mandates any buses carrying migrants arrive in the city only between 8:30 a.m. and noon on weekdays. The buses’ arrival must also be announced 32 hours in advance, he said. The order specifically applies to buses contracted by the state of Texas — whose governor Adams routinely blames for sending asylum seekers into the five boroughs.
(Jason Beeferman. Mayor Adams announces executive order aimed at restricting Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s migrant busing. Politico. December 27, 2023.)

asylum seeker

go pear shaped

Heading off over the Christmas break? And maybe you’re thinking of renting out your main residence on the short-term rental market, such as Airbnb or some similar platform? That can be a great way to fund your holiday, but what if it all goes pear shaped?

Suppose you come back to wrecked appliances or even a trashed house, or what if your renter suffers an injury during their stay? Slips on a wet floor, falls down a set of stairs or gets an electrical shock from faulty wiring. Any of those scenarios could end up costing you a lot more than whatever you’ve earned from the rental.
(Michael Gebicki. Renting out your place while you’re away? Beware this trap. The Sydney Morning Herald. December 26, 2023.)

but what if it all goes pear shaped?

go wrong

swatting

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said someone reported a fake crime at her home Monday, the latest in a series of apparent swatting incidents that have targeted her.

“I was just swatted. This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here. My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn’t have to deal with this,” she said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
(Jared Gans. Greene says she was swatted while at home with family on Christmas. The Hill. December 25, 2023.)

Picture this.

You’re sitting at home, enjoying a quiet afternoon, when you hear a knock at your door. Strange. You’re not expecting anyone, but maybe it’s a neighbor or that package you’ve been waiting for from Amazon.

But when you open the door, a troop of SWAT officers outfitted in specialized gear swarm your home and order you to get on the ground. They go room to room, shouting commands and training their rifles on anyone they come across.

You’ve just been swatted.
(Dakin Andone. Swatting is a dangerous prank with potentially deadly consequences. Here’s what you need to know. CNN. March 30, 2019.)

to make a false report of an ongoing serious crime in order to elicit a response from law enforcement (such as the dispatch of a SWAT unit)

organza

Julien's Auctions announced on Sunday that Princess Diana's ballerina-length evening dress by Moroccan-British fashion designer Jacques Azagury that she wore in Florence, Italy in April 1985 and again to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986, along with a matching illustration, sold for $1,148,080. The winning bid was 11 times its original estimate of $100,000.

According to Julien's Auctions, "The dress with padded shoulder pads features a black velvet bodice with embroidered stars in metallic thread made from Jakob Schlaepher fabric with a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow. The ballerina skirt was the perfect nod to Diana's love of dance and her being a patron of The English National Ballet."
(Stephanie Petit. Princess Diana's Dress Sells for a Record-Breaking $1.1 Million at Auction — 11 Times the Estimated Price. People. December 18, 2023.)

a two-tier royal blue organza skirt with a sash and bow

Health authorities are now investigating at least 205 cases of lead poisonings across 33 different states linked to contaminated applesauce, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Tuesday. That's up from 125 cases in the agency's last weekly tally.

The growing case count comes as the Food and Drug Administration continues its probe into the source of the tainted cinnamon blamed for the contamination.

One theory the FDA has been exploring is whether the cinnamon was contaminated as the result of "economically motivated adulteration," an agency spokesperson said. Economically motivated adulteration is when a person or company swaps ingredients or adds filler to make a product more profitable — the FDA also refers to it as "food fraud." An agency spokesperson declined to identify what other theories investigators have been pursuing.
(Alexander Tin. Recalled applesauce pouches now linked to more than 200 lead poisoning cases in 33 states, CDC says. CBS News. December 19, 2023.)

food fraud

hot garbage

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled to drop former President Trump from the state's 2024 ballots. While other states consider the same move, federal prosecutor Francey Hakes ripped the "shocking" decision on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday.

The disqualification, which was made under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, is related to the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

Tuesday's 4-3 ruling is stayed until January 4 because of likely appeals. Three justices on the Colorado Supreme Court dissented.
(Madeline Coggins. Colorado judges' decision to remove Trump from ballot is 'hot garbage,' says former prosecutor. Fox News. December 20, 2023.)

hot garbage

FRANCEY HAKES: It really is a shocking opinion. I read it. It is a couple of hundred pages of hot garbage. There is simply no defense for this anywhere in the Constitution.
(ibid.)

pixie cut

A haircut sparked international online backlash after Eve Gilles was crowned Miss France on Saturday.

The 20-year-old from Nord-pas-de-Calais sported a pixie cut hairstyle as she was crowned, making her the first contestant in the pageant’s 103-year history to not have long hair.

Social media users called out Gilles’ win, accusing the judges of supporting "wokeness" by picking someone with an "androgynous" look. In response, Gilles insisted that every woman is different.
(Lindsay Kornick. Miss France defends short haircut after online backlash: 'Every woman is different'. Fox News. December 19, 2023.)

pixie cut hairstyle

In the 1930s and 1940s, as flapper style faded, there was a return to longer lengths. Fast-forward to the 1950s, and the pixie cut as we know it today—though not quite as short—was born. Popularized by the actors Audrey Hepburn and Jean Seberg, who boldly rejected the long waves and coifs of their silver-screen counterparts, the pixie became a symbol of nonconformity and empowerment.
(Kristen Bateman. How the Pixie Cut Evolved Into Today’s Biggest Beauty Statement. The Vogue. April 27, 2021.)

tranche

European Union member states are mulling a "Plan B" to neutralize Hungary's block on some $54 billion in emergency funds for Ukraine, as Kyiv enters what is expected to be a punishing and dangerous second winter of full-scale war with Russia.

"Work on potential alternatives" to the stalled funding plan is under way, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán delivered on his threat to block the latest tranche of funds for Kyiv at last week's two-day summit in Brussels.
(David Brennan. Rarely Used Loophole Could Allow Ukraine Allies to Unlock Aid Funds. Newsweek. December 16, 2023.)

the latest tranche of funds for Kyiv

sexcapade

The United States Senate was rocked by a gay sex tape scandal after a video of two men engaged in an explicit sex act in a Senate hearing room appeared online.

U.S. Capitol Police told Fox News they were aware of an amateur pornographic video published by the Daily Caller late Friday. The extremely graphic footage shows someone identified as a congressional staffer having sex with another man on the dais in hearing room 216 of the Hart Senate Office Building.

A senior Congressional official told Fox News that if the sex acts were consensual, "no crime was committed," regardless of the locale.

FOX News contributor Jonathan Turley suggested in a blog post that the individuals seen in the video could face potential criminal charges, even if the act was consensual.

"Obviously, the videotape will result in the termination of any staffers involved. However, the question is any possible criminal charge," Turley wrote on his website.

According to Turley, the charges would hinge on whether the unofficial use of a Senate hearing room for the sexcapade would constitute trespass.
(Chris Pandolfo. NSFW: Capitol Hill rocked by sex tape scandal featuring famous Senate hearing room. Fox News. December 16, 2023.)

sexcapade

gate lice

The decision of when to get in line to board an airplane can be a contentious one, but it shouldn’t be.

While gate agents will give clear, boarding group-specific directions , there remains a strong contingent of passengers who either get in line before they’re called or wait in their seats until they’re the last to board. While the latter type of traveler often hangs back to avoid standing in line altogether, the motives driving the former group can be harder to place.

Airline employees even have a nickname for these types of fliers: Gate lice.
(Sophia Andrade. Why do ‘gate lice’ line up early for a flight? Psychologists explain. The Washington Post. December 13, 2023.)

gate lice

testy

President Biden got testy with White House reporters Tuesday as they blasted him with questions during his Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

After his talk with Zelenskyy concluded Tuesday afternoon, the gaggle of reporters present peppered both world leaders with questions. Seemingly taken aback by the volume and number of questions coming his way, Biden held up his hand and exclaimed, "Whoa! Whoa! Whoa, hush up a second, Okay?"

The noise from the reporters died down as Biden went on to make his announcement. "I got one more thing to say," he stated, while holding a stack of papers in his hand. "I just signed another $200 million draw down from the Department of Defense for Ukraine."
(Gabriel Hays. Biden tells White House reporters to 'hush up,' laughs as he ignores their questions. Fox News. December 12, 2023.)

veritas

House GOP Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., slammed Harvard’s decision Tuesday to stand behind Harvard President Claudine Gay despite her testifying last week at a congressional hearing that calls on campus for the genocide of Jews require "context" before they would violate the school's code of conduct.

Taking a point of personal privilege at the top of the House Republican Conference press conference, Stefanik ripped the "complete moral failure" of Harvard's leadership, saying that in allowing Gay to remain as president, the "only update to the code of conduct" that the Ivy League school has made after the hearing, "is to allow a plagiarist as the president of Harvard."
(Daniel Wallace. Stefanik shreds Harvard over 'complete moral failure' after allowing Claudine Gay to remain president. Fox News. December 12, 2023.)

"As a Harvard graduate, I'm reminded of Harvard's motto, Veritas, which goes back – and it's older than the founding of our country, it goes back to the 1640s. In addition, the motto was Veritas Christo et Ecclesiae – Truth for Christ and the Church."

"Larry Summers, who was president of Harvard when I was an undergrad, talked about the meaning of Veritas is divine truth, moral truth. Let me be clear. Veritas does not depend on the context," Stefanik said. "This is a moral failure of Harvard's leadership and higher education leadership at the highest levels, and the only change they have made to their code of conduct, where they failed to condemn calls for genocide of the Jewish people, the only update to the code of conduct is to allow a plagiarist as the president of Harvard."
(ibid.)

prevail

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will get one last chance to prevail on senators to cut a deal on funding Ukraine’s defense against Russia before the chamber is scheduled to go home for the holidays.

Zelenskyy is scheduled to address all senators at a Tuesday morning meeting, according to a Senate leadership aide. The Senate is struggling to finish a deal that would marry Ukraine funding with new border restrictions, and Zelenskyy’s address may help prevail on senators in both parties to finish the job.
(Zelenskyy gets one last chance to convince Senate to cut a deal. Politico. December 10, 2023.)

May peace prevail on earth.

Zelenskyy will get one last chance to prevail on senators to cut a deal on funding…

Zelenskyy’s address may help prevail on senators in both parties

One prevails on somebody who resists: "He had prevailed upon the king to spare them" (Daniel Defoe).

wild-haired outsider

Argentina libertarian economist Javier Milei took office on Sunday warning in his maiden speech that he had no alternative to a sharp, painful fiscal shock to fix the country's worst economic crisis in decades, with inflation heading towards 200%.

"There is no alternative to a shock adjustment," he said on the steps on Congress after taking the presidential baton and sash, with crowds of supporters cheering despite Milei saying the economy would worsen in the short term. "There is no money."

The wild-haired outsider marks a major gamble for Argentina: his shock therapy economic plan of sharp spending cuts has gone down well with investors and could stabilize the embattled economy, but it risks pushing more people into hardship with over two-fifths already in poverty.
(Argentine President Milei warns economic shock unavoidable in maiden speech. Reuters. December 11, 2023.)

wild-haired outsider

Wild-Haired Former Rocker Promises to Remake Argentina if Elected President
(Wall Street Journal. October 19, 2023.)

Who is Javier Milei? How wild-haired TV pundit ignited Argentine rage to become president
(South China Morning Post. November 20, 2023.)

Friends and foes of Argentina’s next president compare him to his fellow right-wing populists Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. Others have called the wild-haired economist a mix of Boris Johnson and the killer doll Chucky.

But when Javier Milei’s image consultant conceived his unorthodox hairdo, she had two different men in mind: Elvis Presley and Wolverine.

stand-up guy

Billionaire X owner Elon Musk called out Disney CEO Bob Iger in an onslaught of posts on his social media platform Thursday morning, asking why Disney does not suspend its ads on Facebook or Instagram over recent allegations content on those sites enabled child sex trafficking and assault, as Musk continues to take swipes at Disney over its decision to pull ads from X.

In another post Thursday morning, Musk said “Bob [Iger] thinks it’s cool to advertise next to child exploitation material,” calling Iger a “real stand up guy” while misspelling his name as “Eiger.”
(Brian Bushard. Musk Slams Disney CEO Bob Iger—Again—After Disney Suspends Ads On X. Forbes. December 7, 2023.)

a “real stand up guy

rizz

rizz

The Oxford University Press announced Monday the 2023 Word of the Year is "rizz."

A slang word popularized by social media, rizz was chosen from a pool of eight words by language experts with input from the public.

"Rizz" is believed to be short for "charisma," describing one's ability to flirt and attract someone romantically. It can be used as a noun or a verb, depending on the context.
(Kinsey Crowley. 2023 has got 'rizz': Oxford announces the Word of the Year. USA TODAY. December 4, 2023.)

To rizz is someone is to attract or seduce them, Oxford defines.

To have rizz is to have the ability to charm others through communicating.
(ibid.)

Bronx cheer

John Kerry might need to cut back on his own emissions.

The Biden administration’s climate envoy was discussing US policy on coal power plants at the Climate Change Conference in Dubai on Sunday when Kerry may have unleashed a burst of wind energy.

The former secretary of state was speaking next to Becky Anderson, managing editor of CNN Abu Dhabi, and Fatih Birol, executive director of the International Energy Agency, when a Bronx cheer suddenly erupted midsentence.
(Loud fart sound erupts during John Kerry’s speech at climate panel. New York Post. December 4, 2023.)

Bronx cheer suddenly erupted midsentence

bunfight

White House budget director Shalanda Young said funds for military aid would run out by the end of the year and that a failure by Congress to approve new support would “kneecap” Kyiv in its fight against the Russian invasion. “There is no magical pot of funding available to meet this moment. We are out of money — and nearly out of time,” she said.

Meanwhile EU member states are embroiled in a huge budget bunfight, including top-up funds of €50bn for Ukraine, ahead of a summit in Brussels on December 14-15. The budget talks have become even more complicated by the far-right’s victory in Dutch elections and a landmark court ruling in Germany restricting government spending. To make matters worse, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is again vowing to veto the start of Ukraine’s EU membership talks.
(Darren Dodd. Failure to approve further US aid could ‘kneecap’ Kyiv. Financial Times. December 4, 2023.)

budget bunfight

cross on one’s back

(Bob) Iger recently went public with his decision to pull ads from Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter) social media platform, joining others in the progressive CEO class attacking someone the left hates as much as Donald Trump.

The overarching goal of the progressive movement, if you haven’t noticed, is destroying the platform Musk is trying to remake from the lefty safe space it had been for far too long to a free-speech mecca.

No more silencing of conservative voices, no more taking orders from the lefties in the Biden administration.

With that, Musk, despite being the world’s richest man, had a big “X” on his back.
(Charles Gasparino. Elon Musk has a big X on his back as Bob Iger pulls ads from platform. New York Post. December 2, 2023.)

Musk… had a big “X” on his back

bear [take up] one’s cross
a cross to bear

emcee

CEO Elon Musk unveiled the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck at a live event at its Gigafactory in Austin, Texas.

The futuristic-looking Cybertruck is the first electric vehicle Tesla offers that isn’t a sedan marks the company’s entry into the growing EV pickup market, joining rivals like Ford and Rivian. One advantage Elon Musk promises the Cybertruck has over the competition? It is bullet proof.

Musk, who emceed the event, hyped the flatbed, which is over 6 feet long, towing capacity of 11,000 pounds and windows that can repel live bullets.
(Eric Revell. Tesla Cybertruck deliveries begin after long delays. FOX Business. November 30, 2023.)

CEO Elon Musk unveiled the long-awaited Tesla Cybertruck at a live event

Musk, who emceed the event…

Master of Ceremonies

"kayo"は、K.O.

pied-a-terre

pied-a-terre

London’s booming luxury real estate market continues to attract wealthy local residents and ultra-high-net-worth individuals from the U.S., India, Dubai, and beyond.

The owners of one of the apartments within Prospect Place, a family from India who use the property as a pied-à-terre, recently tapped London-based interior design studio Black and Milk to renovate the interiors and add personal touches. They’ve now put their part-time pad in London up for lease for $31,500 (or £25,000 per month).
(Emma Reynolds. London’s Ultra-Luxury Rental Market is Booming, And This Turnkey Rental is The Epitome of Modern Elegance. Robb Report. November 28, 2023.)

pieds-à-terre

となります。

lickspittle

lickspittle author

The word “lickspittle” is one of my favorites in the English language.

It’s a derogatory medieval term first deployed in 1586 by a professor named John James Gryneus, who wrote of “flatterers which did lick the spittle of Dionysius the tyrant and said that it was sweeter than the sweet wine.”

So it literally meant someone willing to lick the spit off another person’s lips and tell them it’s wonderful, however awful that person may be.

In modern parlance, it’s come to denote a fawning, sycophantic, brown-nosing toady who gushes insincere flattery for personal gain.

Which brings me neatly to Omid Scobie, the weirdly pale-faced, heavy-eyebrowed little weasel who makes a living peddling constant garbage about the royal family on behalf of the world’s most disingenuous victims, Meghan and Harry.
(Piers Morgan. Lickspittle author Omid Scobie lies about everyone — including me — and can’t be trusted with latest Meg and Harry book. New York Post. November 27, 2023.)

lick a person’s boots
lick a person’s shoes

kibbutz

Elon Musk visited Israel Monday, meeting the country’s leaders and walking through a kibbutz destroyed by Hamas last month as he tried to calm outrage caused by his endorsement of an antisemitic post on his social media platform, X.

Musk was taken to Kfar Azza — one of the kibbutzim attacked on October 7 — by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The kibbutz was the home of Abigail Edan, a four-year-old American dual citizen abducted by the militant group that day and released Sunday.

In a live online conversation on X with Netanyahu Monday, Musk agreed with the prime minister that Israel must destroy Hamas.
(Elon Musk visits destroyed kibbutz and meets Netanyahu in wake of antisemitic post. CNN. November 27, 2023.)

kibbutz

kibbutzim

です。

sheisty

Washington — Embattled Rep. George Santos said he expects to be expelled from Congress in the coming days and will "wear it like a badge of honor."

"I know I'm going to get expelled when this expulsion resolution goes to the floor," the New York Republican said Friday on an X Space hosted by conservative media personality Monica Matthews.

The Ethics Committee released a 56-page report earlier this month that said there was "substantial evidence" that Santos violated federal law. The report alleged Santos funneled large sums of money through his campaign and businesses to pay for his personal expenses…
(Caitlin Yülek. George Santos says he expects he'll be expelled from Congress. CBS News. November 26, 2023.)

"There's felons galore," he said. "There's people with all sorts of sheisty backgrounds. And all of a sudden, George Santos is the Mary Magdalene of United States Congress."
(ibid.)

people with all sorts of sheisty backgrounds

shyster

この"shyster"についてはドイツ語Scheisser(Scheissは英単語の"shit"に相当)から来ているとの解説があります。

Brown Friday

Stuffed turkey — more like stuffed toilets.

As families across the country prepare for their annual Thanksgiving feasts, plumbers are bracing for their busiest day of the year, “Brown Friday,” when the holiday can swiftly turn into a “s–tshow” for hosts and guests.

According to Yelp, the day after Thanksgiving often sees an influx of people searching for emergency plumbing services, with many calling local handiworkers to unclog toilets and fix drains in the aftermath of people overeating on Turkey Day.

Using search query data, Yelp found a 99% increase in “request a quote” service bookings for plumbers the day after Thanksgiving overall and revealed a list of America’s top 30 most clogged-up plumbing cities on “Brown Friday.”
(‘Brown Friday’ is the worst plumbing day of the year — how to prep your toilet for it. New York Post. November 22, 2023.)

"Black Friday"

ransack

A flash mob of teens could be seen on camera ransacking a Nike store in Los Angeles and taking off with about $12,000 worth of merchandise, according to authorities.

Seventeen masked youngsters rolled up in five different cars and descended on the chain store on South Alameda Street on Sunday evening around 6 p.m. and quickly filled up clothing and boxes of sneakers into trash bags, the LAPD said.

Stunned customers looked on as the thieves quickly filled their trash bags to the brim with goodies from the athletic retail shop, according to footage posted online.
(Flash mob of teens roll up in 5 cars and steal $12K from LA Nike store in caught-on-tape heist. NewYork Post. November 21, 2023.)

ransack

carte blanche

The biggest tech news this week is the ouster of Sam Altman from his role as CEO of OpenAI, a move that has shaken the company and the industry. Hundreds of OpenAI employees have threatened to resign. Altman has already moved on to a role at Microsoft. And OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is on its third CEO in as many days.

OpenAI was founded as a nonprofit, with an explicit mission to harness what may soon be superhuman intelligence “to benefit humanity as a whole.” But that sensibility hasn’t lasted. The company now has a multi-billion-dollar for-profit arm.
(Jill Filipovic. Opinion: The drama around Sam Altman is an urgent warning. CNN. November 21, 2023.)

But then they fired him without warning, and apparently without involving Microsoft, the company’s largest shareholder. Now, Altman is at the new AI group at Microsoft, and one has to wonder if the oversight and caution there will be on par with that at OpenAI, or if he’ll be handed carte blanche to push as fast and hard as he wants.
(ibid.)

if he’ll be handed carte blanche to push as fast and hard as he wants

eliminate

A Democrat congressman is walking back a comment he made against former President Trump over the weekend that sparked a social media firestorm.

"Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again," Rep. Daniel Goldman of New York posted on X on Monday.

"While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words."
(Andrew Mark Miller. New York Dem backtracks after calling for Trump to be 'eliminated'. Fox News. November 20, 2023.)

"His rhetoric is really getting dangerous," Goldman said during an interview with President Biden's former press secretary Jen Psaki on her MSNBC show.

"More and more dangerous. We saw what happened on January 6th, when he used his inflammatory rhetoric now, and his recent truth social post is incredibly, incredibly scary for anyone that might be trying to work in government. And it is just unquestionable at this point that man cannot see public office again. He is not only unfit, he is destructive to our democracy, and he has to be eliminated."
(ibid.)

he has to be eliminated.

Conservatives on X were outraged by Goldman’s comments, with some arguing that the lawmaker was alluding to assassinating the former president.
(New York Post)

eliminate  to kill.
A variant of LIQUIDATE with the same origin and the same connotations, usually of political or espionage killings.

drop the ball

An illegal Chinese biolab unearthed in California roused concerns last week when local officials and contractors reported finding pathogens labeled "HIV" and "Ebola" during a CDC-ordered waste eradication at the site. Now federal agencies face criticism that they "dropped the ball" on investigating how pervasive the threat could be nationwide.
(Taylor Penley. FBI, CDC shredded for 'dropping the ball' on secret Chinese lab found in US: 'Reads like a movie script'. Fox News. November 19, 2023.)

FBI、CDC

dropped the ball

"The FBI and the CDC really dropped the ball here in terms of investigating not only this illegal lab, but now we wonder how many more labs like this exist in the country," she said.
(ibid.)

つい先日取り上げた、"take one’s eye off the ball"もご覧下さい。

ulterior

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Wednesday he had not changed his view that Chinese President Xi Jinping was effectively a dictator, a comment likely to land with a thud in Beijing after the two leaders held straightforward summit talks.

Biden held a solo news conference after four hours of talks with Xi on the outskirts of San Francisco. At the end of the news conference, he was asked whether he still held the view that Xi was a dictator, something he said in June.
(Biden calls Xi a dictator after carefully planned summit. Reuters. November 17, 2023.)

In response, China's foreign ministry said it "strongly opposes" the remarks, without mentioning Biden by name.

"This statement is extremely wrong and irresponsible political manipulation," foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters on Thursday at a routine briefing.

"It should be pointed out that there will always be some people with ulterior motives who attempt to incite and damage U.S.-China relations, they are doomed to fail."

Mao refused to specify the identity of "some people" in answer to a follow-up question.
(ibid.)

there will always be some people with ulterior motives who attempt to incite and damage U.S.-China relations, they are doomed to fail

ulterior motives

この"ulterior"という単語ですが、ラテン語のulter(向こうの、彼方の)、ultra(はるか彼方に)という語に由来しています。

petri dish

The federal district court in Arizona ordered an American Airlines passenger to pay the carrier $38,952 after she pleaded guilty to interfering with a flight crew member.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Arizona, Cayla Farris used profanity and threatened flight crew members while traveling from Phoenix to Hawaii on Feb. 13, 2022. Prosecutors say her behavior prevented flight attendants from carrying out their duties and the captain decided to return to Phoenix.

Experts say airplanes can be petri dishes for bad behavior as travelers are crammed together and often stressed about getting where they need to be. Federal law requires passengers to obey crewmember instructions.
(Zach Wichter. An expensive flight: American Airlines passenger fined almost $40,000 for being disruptive. USA Today. November 15, 2023.)

… airplanes can be petri dishes for bad behavior

something (such as a place or situation) that fosters development

God willing

Washington − Women aren't getting the care they need when it comes to menopause, heart attacks and other health issues, according to the Biden administration. Now, first lady Jill Biden is giving the administration 45 days to amp up efforts to change that.

Officials said they’re trying to correct the fact that women have been understudied and underrepresented in health research, despite making up more than half the population.

The new initiative announced Monday will be led by Dr. Carolyn M. Mazure, who recently joined Biden’s office from the Yale School of Medicine.

"I didn't realize how much incongruity there was and how imbalanced it was," President Joe Biden said when he signed a memo establishing the initiative.  "So, God willing, we’re going to solve that."
(Maureen Groppe. Why can't women get better care for menopause or heart attacks? Jill Biden wants answers. USA Today. November 13, 2023.)

God willing

MIAMI - Days before his election to a third term in office, City of Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes announced he's fighting cancer.

He sat down with CBS News Miami to talk about how he's going to navigate his new reality while serving his constituents.

"I am not going to stop working and God willing, I am going to beat this," said Reyes.

The District 4 commissioner was recently diagnosed with leukemia.
(Nikita Carrero. Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes navigating new reality after cancer diagnosis. CBS News. November 9, 2023.)

eradicate

Google is scheduled to delete troves of inactive Gmail accounts as a cybersecurity initiative that goes into effect on Dec. 1.

Any account that has not been touched for two years could be eradicated, including a user’s Google Workspace apps like Drive, Docs and Photos.
(Alex Mitchell. Google will start deleting many Gmail accounts soon — is yours safe? NewYork Post. November 13, 2023.)

eradicate

cut a figure

The Princess of Wales looked solemn as she appeared at the Cenotaph for a poignant service to remember fallen soldiers.

Kate, 41, maintained a sombre expression for the occasion and dressed in an all black outfit as she arrived at the Remembrance Sunday Service at Cenotaph in London.

On the lapel of her Alexander McQueen military-inspired coat, Kate opted for three red poppies to pay tribute to all those who have lost their lives in conflict while fighting for their country.
(Lydia Hawken. Kate Middleton cuts a solemn figure in an elegant black outfit as she joins Queen Camilla on a balcony at the Remembrance Sunday Service. Daily Mail. November 12, 2023.)

Kate Middleton cuts a solemn figure in an elegant black outfit

The Princess of Wales looked solemn

cut a poor figure(みすぼらしく見える)
cut a ridiculous figure(こっけいに見える)

overbite

overbite

A woman who was branded 'horse face' due to her extreme overbite says a £25,000 jaw operation has made her feel like a new woman - and she's even been compared to Kate Beckinsale.

Olivia Boardman, 29, who lives in Wembley, London, was taunted by bullies since the age of 10, when fellow pupils first noticed her overbite, which occurs when the front teeth protrude far beyond the bottom row of teeth.

But the cosmetic problem soon transformed into a health one when Olivia began experiencing sleep apnoea and lower oxygen levels to her brain - both caused by her overbite.

The film and TV trailer maker, who's originally from Manchester, said the condition made her feel confused and tired all the time, and things became so dire she even swore off dating.

But now after going under the knife, Olivia says she has a new lease of life and is flattered at being mistaken for a 'supermodel'.
(Maria Okanrende. Bullies used to call me 'horse face' because of my overbite so I paid £25,000 to fix it - now people say I look like Kate Beckinsale. Daily Mail. November 9, 2023.)

uncanny valley

Follow this makeup trend to verify you are not a robot — but want to be.

The viral “uncanny valley” makeup trend is taking over TikTok, as creators try to spook their viewers with their scary good makeup skills.

Uncanny valley” is the term used to describe the uncomfortable feeling people have when making eye contact with an android — a robot made to resemble a human.

To replicate this feeling, TikTokers are throwing things into reverse — and applying their makeup to appear like a bot.
(Adriana Diaz. What is the ‘uncanny valley’ makeup trend — and why is it creeping everybody out? New York Post. November 8, 2023.)

the term used to describe the uncomfortable feeling people have when making eye contact with an android

travesty

A courtroom sketch artist has responded to a Fox News commentator who called her drawings of Donald Trump a "travesty."

Former White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany joined Fox News' panel show The Five on Monday to discuss Trump's massive $250 million civil fraud trial.

Asked what advice she would have for the former president, she said: "I would advise him to ask for a better sketch artist, because I think that does not look like my former boss."
(Mia Jancowicz. A court artist covering Trump's trial had the perfect response to a Fox commentator calling her work a 'travesty'. Insider. November 7, 2023.)

travesty

Claiming that New York Attorney General Letitia James' case against Trump is a "travesty of justice," she added that "that sketch is a travesty too, it looks nothing like Trump."
(ibid.)

travesty of justice

phenotypic age

Want to live longer? New research shows a link between strong heart health and slower biological aging — and there are certain steps that can help you get there.

The analysis, using data from 6,500 adults who participated in the 2015 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, found that having high cardiovascular health may slow the pace of biological aging. Adults with high cardiovascular health were about 6 years younger biologically than their chronological age, according to the research.
(Sara Moniuszko. Following these 8 steps for heart health may slow biological aging by 6 years, research shows. CBS News. November 6, 2023.)

phenotypic age

"We found that higher cardiovascular health is associated with decelerated biological aging, as measured by phenotypic age. We also found a dose-dependent association — as heart health goes up, biological aging goes down," study senior author Nour Makarem, an assistant professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, said in a news release from the American Heart Association.

"For example, the average actual age of those with high cardiovascular health was 41, yet their average biological age was 36; and the average actual age of those who had low cardiovascular health was 53, though their average biological age was 57," according to the news release.
(ibid.)

They found that people who had high cardiovascular health had a negative phenotypic age acceleration — meaning that they were physically younger than their actual age.

In contrast, people with low cardiovascular health had a positive phenotypic age acceleration and were physically older than their actual age.
(Marc Lallanilla. Want to live 6 years longer? Follow this 8-step checklist to slow biological aging. New York Post. November 6, 2023.)

caboose

Nearly 300,000 American adults wind up in the emergency room every year for having a “foreign object in body” — making it the ninth leading cause of unintentional injuries that land people in the hospital, according to a new analysis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data.

In 2021, there were 277,922 emergency room visits for “foreign object in body” — which included plastic swords and glow sticks in ears; magnets and diesel fuel up noses, and steak knives and video-game controllers down throats, according to a blogger who reviewed the reports on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s database.
(Georgia Worrell. Nearly 300,000 Americans go to ER yearly to remove ‘foreign objects’ from strange places. New York Post. November 4, 2023.)

Over half of the items found lodged in the caboose are sex toys like vibrators and anal beads, but marbles, bottles, and other detritus are also found.

To add insult to injury, the 277,922 foreign-body incidents cost an average of $5,000 at the hospital, according to personal injury lawyers at John Foy & Associates’ study of the CDC data.

stomach-turning

stomach-turning

"I Was About 27 Years Old Before I Realized It Was Disgusting": Adults Are Sharing The Stomach-Turning Behaviors They Used To Do As Kids Until They Realized It Was "Gross"
(Yahoo! News. November 2, 2023.)

"All my life, I wiped my toothbrush on the hand towel to dry it up until my sister asked what the fuck I was doing."
(ibid.)

turn a person’s stomach

stomach-wrenching
stomach-twisting

revocable

He also got into a round of banter with Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron and AG lawyer Colleen Faherty, about the pronunciation of the work “revocable.”

Faherty asked Don Jr. what the “Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust” was, prompting Engoron to interject: “Now that we finally have a trustee in the courtroom, we can finally ask if it is revocable or revocable.”

“Your honor, it’s a good question, but I’m not sure which is actually correct,” Don Jr. answered.

Faherty then asked a question using the pronunciation revocable, to which Don Jr. joked, “I’m not sure what that is, I only understand revocable” — prompting yet more chuckles from the gallery.

New York Post

revocable or revocable

revocable
revocable

curmudgeon

The curmudgeonly 80-year-old “Raging Bull” Oscar winner rambled and ranted while fending off accusations from longtime former right-hand woman Graham Chase Robinson, who has accused him of everything from unwanted physical contact to making lewd jokes about his Viagra prescription.

“This is all nonsense!” the legendary actor, dressed in a green polo shirt and jacket and wearing black glasses, dramatically bellowed.

De Niro’s lawyer, Richard Schoenstein, had set the stage in his opening statements Monday, the first day of the actor’s civil trial face-off with Robinson, when he acknowledged, “This trial is going to be a little bit like a movie.’’
(Grumpy Robert De Niro testifies in sensational showdown with ex-assistant who claimed he’s boss from hell: ‘This is nonsense!’. New York Post. October 30, 2023.)

coup de grace

It was, to put it mildly, a bad day on Earth when an asteroid smacked Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula 66 million years ago, causing a global calamity that erased three-quarters of the world's species and ended the age of dinosaurs.

The immediate effects included wildfires, quakes, a massive shockwave in the air and huge standing waves in the seas. But the coup de grâce for many species may have been the climate catastrophe that unfolded in the following years as the skies were darkened by clouds of debris and temperatures plunged.

coup de grâce
