ルイジアナ州選出の上院議員ジョン・ケネディ氏（74歳）が2028年の大統領選への出馬を検討しているというニュース記事からの引用です。

WASHINGTON — Verbal sharpshooter Sen. John Kennedy kept the door open to a 2028 presidential run and defended Sen. Tom Cotton from President Trump’s wrath over his blocking of the Sunshine Protection Act.

次期大統領選を巡ってはまだ不透明なところが多いですが、前回の大統領選でトランプ氏に破れたカマラ・ハリス氏や、ニューサム加州知事などの有力候補の名前が取り沙汰されています。

ケネディ氏はこうした人達よりも自分の方が大統領職に相応しいと自信満々のようです。発言に出てくるのは、

goobers

という見慣れない単語ですが、間抜けという意味で使われるようです。

"goober"とはアメリカ南部方言でピーナッツのことだそうで、これはアフリカのバンツー語n-gubaから来ているそうです。

ピーナッツが間抜けの意味になるのはよく分かりませんね。

ちょうどこの時期、落花生の収穫シーズンですが、週末は生落花生を買い求め、茹でたのを美味しくいだだいたところです。

lightweight

イランの最高指導者に選出されたモジタバ師について、トランプ米大統領はかねてより指導者に値しない人物として後継指名には否定的な考えを示していました。

報道によるとモジタバ師について、

lightweight

だと侮ったそうです。

"lightweight"の意味ですが、つまらない人物、（能力や影響力の面で劣る）愚鈍な人物という意味があるそうです。

A person of little ability, intelligence, influence, or importance.

"lightweight"がボクシングの階級であるライト級から来ていることは明らかです。文字通り「軽量」ということですが、軽いものは低く見られ貶されるというのは分からないでもありませんが、"lightweight"が軽蔑的な意味合いで使われるとは知りませんでした。

ランダムハウス英語辞書によるとライト級はフェザー級とバンタム級の間の選手だとあり、体重にして56.7〜61 kgだということです。

ではライト級より軽いフェザー級（featherweight）はどうなんだ？と思って辞書を引いてみると、やはり重要ではない人物を指す表現として使われるようで、American Heritage Dictionaryに下記のようにあります。

An insignificant person: a political featherweight.

でも、最も軽いフライ級（flyweight）にはそういう意味合いは無いようなんですが。

ところで冒頭引用しました英大衆紙「サン」の記事によりますと、今回の軍事作戦により殺害されたハメネイ師は元々次男のモジタバ師を後継として推薦していなかったとあります。

興味深い話しですが、モジタバ師は"impotent son"とあります。"impotent"は"lightweight"との評価と通ずるのかと思い読み進めますと以下のくだりがあり・・・。

モジタバ師は最終的に妻との間に子をもうけることが叶ったそうですが、その妻も子も今回の軍事攻撃で失ってしまったそうです。

hack

ホワイトハウス報道官のレビット氏が、移民取り締まりに関する質問をしたメディアの記者を罵ったという記事からの引用です。

罵られたのはヒル紙の記者で、ICEの職員がミネソタ州でアメリカ人女性を銃で撃って死なせことなどを引き合いにトランプ政権の見解を質したようです。レビット報道官はこの記者を、

left-wing hack

と一蹴。記者席に座る資格も無いとまで言ったということです。

ということで今日取り上げる1語は、

hack

なのですが、罵り言葉として、売文家、という訳などが英和辞書に見えます。三文文士などとも言われますが、金儲けのために通俗的な内容のものを書いているという含みがある表現です。

この"hack"という単語は"hackney"という言葉から来ていると語源解説にあります。"hackney"とは荷馬の産地として有名なイギリスのHackney地方に由来し、貸し馬車のことを指します。雇われて人を運ぶサービスですが、そこから雇われ仕事、お金のために他人に仕えること、といったネガティブな意味を帯びるようになり、"hack"とは報酬のためにやる下賤な仕事というような意味になりました。

redneck

米モータースポーツ団体NASCARのコミッショナーが失言で辞任、という見出しが目に留まりました。

NASCARにあまり関心や興味は無いのですが、一体どんな「失言」をしたのか、気になりましたので記事を読んでみることに・・・。

NASCAR commissioner Steve Phelps has resigned from his position, the association announced Tuesday.

背景をざっと整理してみますと、NASCARはレース参戦枠などの運営を巡って一部のレース参加チームから独占禁止法違反を訴えられていたそうで、昨年末に和解が成立したそうです。

その裁判の過程において、コミッショナーがレース参加チームの代表を、

a stupid redneck

と罵るメールを書いていたことが明るみになったということです。

この"redneck"という単語を初めて見るように思います。辞書を引くと、

赤っ首（野郎）；米南部の無教育な白人労働者

とありました。

辞任したコミッショナーは運営方針を批判されてフラストレーションを募らせていたと釈明したようですが、組織のトップによる口汚い罵り言葉というものは致命傷になるものです。

"redneck"、赤っ首（野郎）は文字通り首の周りを赤くしているということですが、屋外の労働で首の周りを日焼けしていることを言ったものだとの語源解説が見られます。

gas bag

退役軍人への支援などに功績のあった俳優のトム・ハンクスさんを称える名誉賞を授与するとしていた米陸軍の士官学校が、授賞式をキャンセルすると発表し波紋を拡げています

名誉賞自体は授与されるそうですが、セレモニーが中止になったのは、ハンクスさんが民主党寄りであることが影響したと報じられています。

ハンクスさんは2020年の大統領選ではバイデン氏支持に名を連ねたとあります。

そして、2016年、この年の大統領選はトランプ氏が勝利しましたが、選挙戦の最中、トランプ氏を、

self-involved gas bag

と呼んだそうです。

この"gas bag"という単語の意味するところを知りませんでしたが、気嚢（きのう）という日本語が英和辞書に見えます。気球や飛行船という意味もあるこの単語は、ガスで膨らませた袋のことで、「おしゃべり」の意味でも用いられると分かりました。"gasbag"と1語で綴られることもあります。

"self-involved"という形容詞が意味を強めていますが、訳すならば、独りよがりの駄弁に終始する奴、くらいになるでしょうか。

結構強烈な表現ですね。

トランプ氏が聞いたら顔を紅潮させて手が付けられなくなりそうです。

voodoo economics

このところ国内ニュースでもトップに報じられるのはトランプ関税とそれに伴う株安の話ばかりで、少々食傷気味です・・・。

トランプ氏は株価下落を意に介することもなく、政策を変更することは絶対に無いと言い切っています。株安は想定内の反応であり、アメリカ経済が復活するのには必要な過程であるとも主張しているようです。

しかしながら、輸入関税の引き上げは米国内の物価の上昇を招き、その割を食うのは米国民だというのは専門家の間でも一定している見方です。

以下引用する記事ではタイトルにおいて、トランプ氏の政策を"voodoo economics"と批判しています。

The administration argues that tariffs will force foreign companies to invest in America to bypass the added costs, thus creating greater employment and making the U.S. more self-sufficient. Further, tariffs are estimated to raise an additional $600 billion a year, which will make America “rich again.”

Except how America will be “rich again” is impossible to understand, since more expensive products will presumably absorb most of this newfound wealth.

President George H. W. Bush at first rejected Ronald Reagan’s acceptance of “supply side thinking” as voodoo economics.” Trump’s passion for tariffs, one could say, depends on “black magic” to work, and the damage begins at home.

"voodoo economics"とは何でしょうか？

"voodoo"とは、ブードゥー教と呼ばれる、アフリカ西部や南米で信仰されている宗教を指すそうですが、呪術や生け贄などを特徴とするその教義は先進国の目からみれば怪しさ満点というものです。

この"voodoo economics"という言葉は1980年代にレーガン氏と大統領を争ったジョージ・ブッシュ氏が、レーガン氏の経済政策（レーガノミクス）を批判して使ったものだと言われています。日本語では「呪術経済」という訳語が見られます。

Voodoo economics is a derogatory phrase first used during the 1980 presidential primaries by George H.W. Bush, then a candidate, to describe his opponent Ronald Reagan's proposals to reinvigorate the U.S. economy. Reagan won that election, and his economic policies came to be known as "Reaganomics."

レーガノミクスは減税により経済が潤うといったものでしたが、結果は赤字が積み上がり、大幅な景気後退となりました。

大統領にしろ、首相にしろ、国のリーダーが変わると目新しい政策が語られますが、そうした政策の中身は"voodoo economics"のように効果のほどが甚だ疑問視されるような内容だったりする訳で、いかがわしい経済政策を指す表現として定着しました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryで"voodoo"を引くと、

based on highly improbable suppositions : extremely implausible or unrealistic

という定義が見えます。

今日の1語は、"shill"です。

では、記事の引用をどうぞ。

引用した記事の内容は、アメリカ議会で民主党、共和党の対立が起きているというものです。

互いを批判している訳ですが、後半部分では民主党議員が共和党のジョンソン議員を、

と罵ったとあります。

この"shill"という単語を知らなかったので辞書を引くと、

さくら、おとり、ちょうちん持ち

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

とありました。

「ちょうちん持ち」とは面白い日本語です。久しぶりに広辞苑を引きました。暗い夜道を照らすため、ちょうちんを持って先導する人のことを指すのですが、それが転じて、「他人の手先に使われ、また頼まれもしないのに（！）他人のためにその長所などを吹聴する」（広辞苑第三版）人を蔑んで言う表現になりました。

つまり、民主党議員はジョンソン議員をトランプ大統領やマスク氏に使われるだけの手先だと罵った訳です。

"shill"の語源はよく分かっていないそうですが、"shillaber"という単語が約まったものらしいです。この"shillaber"は人の名前（苗字）でもあるそうですが、ちょうちん持ちのShillaberさんという人がかつていた、という訳でもないようです。

元々の意味はギャンブルなどで賭け金を出させ釣り上げるために、さも勝っているように見せかけてカモを集める囮役、「さくら」を指すものだったそうです。

luvvie

トランプ次期大統領就任が目前です。かねてより「もしトラ」と懸念された状況が現実となり、軌道修正を余儀無くされる人たちは少なくないようです。

このところよく取り上げられているのはGAFAと呼ばれるIT大手のCEOです。トランプ氏当選後、相次ぐ「トランプ詣で」が報じられました。権力に擦り寄るこれらの企業はトランプ氏に睨まれて事業が立ち行かなくなることを懸念しているようです。

以下に引用する記事はフェースブック、インスタグラムを運営するメタ社CEOのマーク・ザッカーバーグ氏を取り上げたものです。

Certainly, he seems to be reshaping Meta in the MAGA image. Last week, Zuckerberg announced plans to loosen restrictions on speech on the likes of Facebook and Instagram, recommend more political content on the platforms and abandon independent fact-checking in a bid to, as he put it, “get back to our roots around free expression”.

かつてフェースブックのアカウントを凍結し、トランプ氏とは敵対関係にあったとも言えるメタ社は、投稿内容のチェックを行う仕組みを事実上無くすことを発表し、180度の方針転換です。

多くのメディアがザッカーバーグ氏を始めとするIT大手CEOらを、トランプ氏に靡いた、膝を屈したと皮肉を込めて報じています。

引用した記事のタイトルでは、

Democrat luvvie to Trump sympathiser

とあります。ここで、"luvvie"とは見慣れない単語ですが、このコンテクストにおいては、やはり皮肉を込めた言い回しであろうと想像がつきます。

手元にある辞書には載っていないのですが、"luvvie"（もしくは、luvvy）は、"lovey"が変化したものだそうで、"love"が元にあります。

ネットで検索してみると、Collins Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

People sometimes refer to actors as luvvies as a humorous way of criticizing their emotional behaviour and their feeling that they are important.

役者についての定義で、記事のコンテクストからはちょっと外れるようですが、この定義自体明らかに侮蔑的なもので、要は「自分に酔っている」みたいな皮肉が込められています。

"luvvie"や"lovey"は親しい間柄、愛するパートナーへの呼び掛けにも使われるそうですが、当事者間には愛情表現であっても、周囲には鼻に付くということもまたよくあるものです。「いちゃいちゃ」しているとか、「べったり」といった日本語はそういう感情を滲ませていますが、それに近いかもしれません。

バイデン大統領の任期中は民主党寄り、リベラルを気取ってきたプラットフォームが、一転して共和党に阿るような態度になったのは誰の目にも明らかで、鼻に付くことこの上ない、という感じでしょうか。

whipper-snapper

Z世代の若者との付き合い方、とりわけZ世代社員の扱い方、みたいな記事はこれまでにも見かけたことがあります。

以下に引用する記事もその類の話なのですが、要はまぁ若者というのはいつの時代も年配者にとっては不可解で扱いにくい存在という話かと思います。

“According to respondents, 29% say Gen Z coworkers are the most annoying to work with,” revealed researchers from LLC.org, Limited Liability Company experts. “Lack of work ethic, complaining and entitlement were the top three annoying traits of Gen Z coworkers.”

Making matters worse, whipper-snappers of the digital era, workers ranging in age from 18 to 27, also rank as the “least productive” folks on the clock as compared to their millennial, Gen X and Baby Boomer colleagues.

記事によれば、3人に一人くらいの割合でZ世代社員を職場における扱いにくい厄介者と回答しているという調査結果があるそうですが、特に困るのが生産性の低さだということです。

そして、Z世代の若者のことを、

whipper-snappers of the digital era

と総括しています。この"whipper-snappers"とは、

思いあがっているつまらないやつ、生意気な若僧、青二才

という意味なんですが、"snippersnapper"という単語が変化したものという解説が見られます。また、"whipster"という単語も同義で用いられるようです。

"whip"とは鞭で打つこと、"snip"は切り取ったりすること、"snap"は折ったり、鋭い音を立てるような動作をすることですが、これらの表現には急に動くとか（whip）、つまらないことをするとか（snip）、突然キレる（snap）、といった意味合いもあり、これらの意味が組み合わさって、そういった行動を繰り返している人、そんなことに終始しているような見下げた人間、というような意味を形成しているように思われます。

カマラ・ハリス副大統領の7年前の発言がSNSで拡散されているというニュース記事を読みました。

その発言というのが、

everybody needs to be woke

というものです。

この"woke"という単語を当ブログでも5年前に取り上げましたが、アメリカのイデオロギーを語るのに不可欠といっていいくらいのキーワードになっているのは、この単語がその後、左翼的思想を批判するコンテクストで使われるようになったことと無縁ではありません。

従って、7年前と今日とではその意味合いも違ってくるというものですが、「誰もが"woke"であるべきだ」という発言は保守層に近い人間には反発を生むのは間違いないでしょう。

さて、大統領選指名候補となったハリス氏は7年前の発言のために

Communist functionary

と叩かれているということなのですが、この"functionary"という単語を知りませんでした。

意味は「役人」、公的機関に仕える職員、と辞書にあります。公的機関、組織のファンクションに携わる人ということですが、日本語で「役人」という時もそうであるように、組織の歯車となって使命を遂行するだけの人間、上層部の指示に従い唯々諾々と職務をこなす官僚（bureaucrat）、といった、ある種、侮蔑的な響きがあるそうです。

Seven years after Harris joined the 2017 conference, critics on social media are lambasting the presumptive Democratic nominee over the clip, including conservative author James Lindsay describing Harris as a "Communist functionary." 

"Kamala is a low-level Communist functionary, and I'm tired of being told we have to pretend she's not," he wrote.

タッキー？ ー tacky

（あらかじめお断りしておきますと、今日の1語は某有名人の愛称ではありません。）

昨日の日曜日、都内に用事があり、久し振りに街中を歩きました。参院選告示後初めての週末ということあってか、街頭演説をする候補者や選挙カーにあちこちで遭遇しました。

暑い中ご苦労な事だと思いますが、どの党も候補者も議席獲得に必死なのでしょう。

アメリカもこの時期、中間選挙を見据えての動きは活発化しているようですが、民主党による献金集めが顰蹙をかっているという記事から引用です。。

A fundraising money grab by President Joe Biden and other top Dems in the wake of the Supreme Court reversal of Roe v. Wade has irked supporters — who called the move “tacky.”

“I’ve gotten six fundraising emails from Democrat candidates today,” feminist author Roxane Gay wrote on Twitter on Friday.

"tacky"という言葉で非難されているのですが、あまり聞き慣れないこの形容詞の意味は、

野暮な、

悪趣味の、

みすぼらしい、

卑俗な

といったようなものです。

アメリカ英語の口語表現だそうです。

American Heritage Dictionaryによると、駄馬のことをtackeyということに因むそうですが、そのtackeyが田舎者、垢抜けしていない無粋な人のことを指すのに使われるようになり、形容詞としての"tacky"になったそうです。

ちょっと検索してみると、"tacky"を使ったヘッドラインの例がすぐに見つかりました。

要は、見苦しい、という意味だと解釈しました。

火事場泥棒 ー profiteer

米国内でのガソリン価格高騰が深刻です。ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻後、原油の調達に支障を来している状況があるというのは多くの人が理解しているところです。

ところが、ホワイトハウスは価格高騰の要因を追及するにあたって、その矛先をロシアから石油会社に変えてきているということです。

大手石油会社はガソリン価格高騰を緩和する努力を怠り、price gouge（価格吊り上げ）により暴利を貪っていると批判し始めたようです。

ホワイトハウスのこの動きには選挙対策、つまり中間選挙を見据えた、有権者へのアピールという見方もあります。

The White House on Wednesday shifted from blaming Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine to oil companies for record-high gas prices, calling on them to "be patriots" and do more to lower prices.

バイデン大統領は石油大手に圧力をかけてガソリン価格の低減を成果としてアピールしたいのでしょう。

というくだりに注目します。

"profiteer"も不当に利益を得るというネガティブな意味合いがあります。

ここでは"global crisis"、すなわちウクライナ危機を口実にして儲けている、という非難であり、日本語で言えば「火事場泥棒」と言うのに近いでしょう。

"profit"（利益、利潤）という意味の名詞に接尾辞-eerが付いたものですが、この接尾辞-eerには軽蔑のニュアンスがあるということです。

米下院議長のペロシ氏が、トランプ前大統領を"creature"呼ばわりした、という記事を読みました。

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said former President Donald Trump’s lasting influence on the Supreme Court has made it "anti-freedom" and "dangerous" to families.

During an appearance on CNN’s "State of the Union" Sunday, Pelosi responded to criticism that Democrats should have been better prepared for the attack on abortion rights after a leaked draft opinion this month signaled the conservative-leaning Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade.

"Who would ever [have] suspected that a creature like Donald Trump would become president of the United States, waving a list of judges that he would appoint, therefore getting the support of the far right and appointing those anti-freedom justices to the court?" Pelosi argued.

きっかけは、このところ議論沸騰している妊娠中絶の是非を巡る論争で、連邦最高裁が女性の中絶の権利を認めたRoe v. Wade判決を見直すことについて言及した文書のリークについてでした。

CNNのニュース映像を見ましたが、今回のような事態が起きることを予想できたのでは、という民主党としての対応姿勢を尋ねるキャスターに対し、ペロシ氏は多少の苛立ちを見せながら

Who would ever suspected that a creature like Donald Trump would become president of the United States

と発言したものでした。

"creature"とは生き物のことですが、侮蔑の意味合いが込められていることは明らかです。

辞書を引くと、形容詞を伴って、愛情や同情を込めて用いられることはあるものの、軽蔑の対象に用いる表現です。

ここでは形容詞は使われていませんが、日本語の「奴」（やつ）という訳語が当てはまるかと。

トランプみたいな奴が大統領になるなんて想像できなかった、そんな感じでしょうか。

前大統領による最高裁判事の人選に問題があったという批判でもあります。

kike

全米プロバスケットボールの有名選手がユダヤ人を貶す差別発言をしたと報じられています。

各メディアで、"anti-Semitic slur"、"racial slur"などと表現されています。

まずは、CNNの記事が目に留まりました。

(CNN) NBA player Meyers Leonard issued an apology Tuesday after a video appeared to show him using an anti-Semitic slur while livestreaming a video game.

Leonard, a forward for the Miami Heat, was playing "Call of Duty: Warzone" on Monday when he said: "F**king cowards. Don't f**king snipe at me. You k*** b*tch."

実際の発言が引用されていますが、伏字になっています。

伏字なのは差別的内容であることに配慮しての事だと思います。伏字であっても口汚い表現であることは想像がつきますが、具体的にどこが反ユダヤ的（anti-Semitic）なのか、判然としません。

つまり、"k***"という箇所が何なのか、ということになります。

個人的にはkの文字で始まる差別的表現に覚えがあったので想像がつきましたが、ほとんどのメディアではこの単語を取り上げていないところ、Times of Israelではそれが"kike"という単語であることを明確に記述していました。

"f**king"や"b*tch"などの表現はご存知でも、"kike"はあまり馴染みがないのではないでしょうか。

ユダヤ人に対しては極めて不快に響く表現として、辞書でも注意書きがあります。

なぜ、ユダヤ人のことを"kike"と呼ぶようになったかについては、語源不詳とされていますが、ユダヤ人の名前の末尾に特徴的に見られるk音に因むとか、諸説あるようです。

私がこの表現を知ったのは、実のところサリンジャーの短編小説です。

サリンジャーの短編小説集「ナイン・ストーリーズ」の中の一篇である、"Down at the Dinghy"に出てきます。

ご存知のように、サリンジャー自身、ユダヤ系の米国人作家の代表的な存在です。

banana republic

昨日の記事でも取り上げた、トランプ支持者が議事堂を襲撃した事件は一応の鎮静化を見たようですが、デモ参加者、警察当局双方に死者を出し、アメリカ国内のみならず、世界中に衝撃を与えました。

邦紙朝刊では暴徒が占拠する議事堂内外の写真を大きく掲載し、さながら特別紙面扱いです。

何と言っても、公正であるはずの選挙結果を受け入れず、認めようとしない暴徒が現職の大統領に唆されるが如く、民主主義の根幹を成す議事堂を襲撃するというのですから、一体どこの国の話か？ということです。

ドイツのメルケル首相始め、海外首脳らも暴挙への批判の声明を発表しました。

米国内においても、民主党関係者はもとより、トランプ氏の身内の共和党内からも批判が絶えません。

ブッシュ前大統領は、暴動の発生について、とてもアメリカ国内とは思えない、"banana replublic"で起きるようなことだとコメントしたようです。

"banana republic"とは、やや軽蔑的なニュアンスのある表現なのですが、発展途上国というほどの意味です。

ランダムハウス英和辞書では、

果実輸出･観光･外資への依存度の高い熱帯地方（特に中南米）の（常に政情不安定な）小国

と定義しています。

「バナナ」は単なる例えです。American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A small country that is economically dependent on a single export commodity, such as bananas, and is typically governed by a dictator or the armed forces.

と定義しており、独裁政権、軍政国家とまで言っています。

バイデン次期大統領就任後も国内の分断された状況は続き、癒されることがないであろうというような評論を新聞では目にします。。

米国の民主主義国家としての矜持、「世界の警察」、世界のリーダーの地位は最早その影が薄くなっていると言わざるを得ないのかもしれません。

fairy

ブラジルのボルソナロ大統領が、新型コロナウィルス検査の結果、陽性であることを公表しました。

ご存知の方も多いと思いますが、ボルソナロ大統領は新型コロナウィルス感染症が拡大する中、都市封鎖やマスク着用などの対策を過剰な反応と切って捨て、新型コロナウィルス感染症などちょっとしたインフルエンザくらいのものでしかない（“a little flu”）、と豪語した政治家です。

コロナウィルス陽性を公表した際もマスクは着用していましたが、会見の最後には外し、自身の健康状態に全く問題がないことをアピールしました。

同大統領はマスク着用者に対して差別的な発言をしていたことも取り上げられています。


One day after announcing he had tested positive for coronavirus Jair Bolsonaro has come under fire for allegedly using homophobic language to mock the use of face masks.

The Folha de São Paulo, a leading broadsheet, claimed Brazil’s far-right leader had baited presidential staff who were using protective masks, claiming such equipment was “coisa de viado” (a homophobic slur that roughly translates as “for fairies”).

Bolsonaro is a longstanding enemy of Brazil’s LGBTQ+ community and during three decades in politics has made no secret of his homophobia.

“I have [parliamentary] immunity to say: yes, I’m homophobic – and very proud of it,” he said in one filmed interview during his seven-term stint as a congressman.

ボルソナロ大統領は、同性愛者反対の立場を公言していることで有名らしいのですが、マスク着用者をポルトガル語で“coisa de viado”と呼んだそうです。

ポルトガル語について、基本単語の知識はおろか、俗語表現など全く知りませんが、記事によれば英語では"fairy"に相当する、ということなので辞書を引くことになりました。妖精を意味する"fairy"が同性愛者に対する差別的な表現とは知りませんでした。

辞書を引いてみますと確かに、男性同性愛者のことを指す侮蔑的な表現であることに触れています。

マスク着用が何故同性愛者を連想させるのか、全く分かりませんが、大統領の感染症状が重篤化しないことを祈ることにしましょうか。

boomer

国会や議会でのヤジというのは洋の東西を問わずあることだと思いますが、ヤジの内容やそれに対する応答がニュース記事になるというのはあまり多くないように思います。

以下に引用するのはCNNからの記事ですが、ニュージーランドの議会で演説中にヤジられた弱冠25歳（！）の女性議員が返す刀で放った言葉が話題になっているものです。


(CNN) — A 25-year-old New Zealand lawmaker giving a speech supporting a climate crisis bill was heckled by an older member of Parliament. Her witty response baffled her audience, to the delight of millennials everywhere.

Chlöe Swarbrick was speaking about the Zero Carbon Bill, which would set a target of zero carbon emissions for the country by 2050. When she was heckled, she casually dropped a sharp-tongued retort — "OK boomer" — and, unfazed, continued talking amid the puzzlement and silence of the room.

The term, a viral meme among millennials and Generation Z, exploded this year on the TikTok social media app, where countless mocking videos are calling out what young people perceive as out-of-touch Baby Boomers and their patronizing opinions.

その言葉が、


"OK boomer"


というものだったということなのですが、この"boomer"という単語が今年になってからSNSなどで爆発的に使用されるようになったのだそうです。

この"boomer"は"baby boomer"から来ています。つまりベビーブーム世代に生まれた人たちということになりますが、侮辱的な表現として使われます。

「世代間格差」と言うのにふさわしいと思われますが、ミレニアル世代と呼ばれる20代やGeneration Zと呼ばれる10代の若者からすると、彼らから見た親世代というものは何かにつけて自分達のことを否定するうっとうしい存在になる訳で、そんな時に毒づくのが、


boomer!


という表現のようです。

米大統領トランプ氏の口汚さというのは今に始まったことではありませんが、前もこのブログで話題にしたことがありますけれども、同氏の発言やツイートはスラング辞書になるのではないかと思うほどです。

今日見たニュース記事では、"sleazebag"という表現が出てきました。


WASHINGTON — President Trump called Nixon’s White House Counsel John Dean a “sleazebag” in a tweet Sunday.

The president once again hammered Democrats for wanting a “Redo, or Do Over” on the heels of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation wrapping up.

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) is kicking off a series of Mueller-related hearings on Capitol Hill Monday with an appearance from Dean.

“They are even bringing in @CNN sleazebag attorney John Dean,” Trump commented. “Sorry, no Do Overs – Go back to work!” he told the Democrats.

Dean is a CNN contributor and has been critical of Trump.

2016年のアメリカ大統領選を巡って、ロシアによる介入疑惑が取り沙汰されてきましたが、司法省の特命調査班による調査が終了し、いわゆるMuller Reportが公表されました。

レポートは公開されたものの黒塗りだらけで、民主党などの反発が高まっています。内容についてはよく分かりませんが、つまるところ大統領は「シロ」ということで、トランプ体制に反発する人達は批判を強めているものです。

民主党などは再調査を主張しているようですが、Muller氏に対する議会でのヒアリング開催も含めて、ニクソン大統領時代の法律顧問であったJohn Dean氏を起用して徹底追及を図る模様です。

トランプ氏が"sleazebag"呼ばわりしたのがこのJohn Dean氏で、大統領がフェイクニュースネットワークと揶揄するCNNでもトランプ氏に批判的な同氏に対して敵意をむき出しにしているようです。

"sleazebag"については、以前取り上げた"sleazy"という表現からも想像がつくように、中心的な意味は、下品、低劣、安っぽさ、というような意味合いです。

見下げた野郎、下品な奴、という訳です。

"sleazeball"という単語もあり、同じ意味合いで使われます。以前取り上げた、"slimeball"もご覧ください。

coon

天気予報のキャスターが番組中、差別的な発言をしたということで解雇されたそうです。


(CNN) — A television station in Rochester, New York, fired a meteorologist Sunday after he used a racial slur on air.

During WHEC-TV's Friday evening broadcast, Jeremy Kappell said "Martin Luther Coon Park," when referring to a downtown Rochester park named after slain civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr.

In a video viewed by CNN, Kappell says "King" immediately after using the slur and continues with the broadcast.

Kappell said his use of the slur was a mistake caused by speaking too quickly.

気象予報士の男性による問題発言は、"Martin Luther Coon Park"という部分ということなのですが、"coon"の意味を知らないと何が差別なのか分かりません。

男性キャスターは早口のために口が滑ったと釈明しているそうですが、有名な黒人活動家であるMartin Luther Kingを"Martin Luther Coon"と言い間違えるというのは、どうなんでしょうか。

この記事をきっかけに初めて知ったのですが、"coon"は黒人を指す侮蔑的な表現として用いられます。アライグマのことである"racoon"を省略した形が"coon"ですが、アライグマの黒い顔との連想があるようです。

また、American Heritage Dictionaryにはやや長い語源解説があり、以下のように説明されています。


...perhaps after Zip Coon, an African American character (depicted as an upstart freeman) in the song “Zip Coon” frequently sung in 19th-century blackface minstrel shows (the character perhaps being so named in reference to the black facial mask of the raccoon and to the practice of hunting and eating raccoons frequently mentioned in minstrel show songs), possibly influenced by 19th-century slang coon, rural white American (often one of modest means and opposed to the slave-owning Southern establishment), fellow, so called in reference to the association of coonskin with American frontiersmen...

今回の失言についてはSNS上や黒人団体などからの批判が相次ぎ、テレビ局側は事態を重く見て男性キャスターの解雇に踏み切った模様です。

egghead

英語では、いわゆるインテリを指すのに、"egghead"という表現を使うそうです。

多少の蔑みが含まれる表現です。Merriam-Websterによると、"informal, often disparaging"との注釈があり、


a person with intellectual interests or pretensions : a brainy person


と定義されています。

それにしても、卵（egg）の形をした頭（head）というように読めますが、それがどうして「インテリ」なんでしょうか。

そもそも、"egghead"は禿げ頭を指していたようです。卵の殻がつるつるだからですね。従って、卵の形状からの連想ではありません。

頭の良い人というのは（頭を使い過ぎるせいでしょうか）、禿げていることが多いからかもしれません。
