mafioso

NBA(全米プロバスケットボール協会)のスター選手を囮に使った違法賭博が摘発されました。

The card-swindling technology NYC mafiosos allegedly used to cheat victims out of millions in a years-long poker scheme is readily available for sale online.

A simple Google search for “X-Ray poker table” quickly pulled up numerous companies producing devices that apparently employ the exact technology mobsters used in their sprawling con, which prosecutors unveiled in a federal indictment Thursday.
(Alex Oliveira. X-ray poker tables allegedly used by NYC mafia in NBA gambling scandal are readily available online. New York Post. October 23, 2025.)

mafiosos

zany

Never use a hotel iron to press your clothes, one expert traveler warned — you don’t know where it’s been.

Gilbert Ott, founder of the travel site godsavethepoints.com, revealed that hotel guests have been known to use the complimentary iron in their room for some zany, off-label reasons.

“It’s worth inspecting the hotel iron, or testing it on a non-external-facing garment before trusting your soon-to-be crisp white shirt,” he told The Daily Mail.

“Why? Pilots and others notoriously use irons to reheat pizza and other food during layovers,” Ott said.
(Alexandra Klausner. Here’s why you should never use a hotel iron, according to a travel expert. New York Post. January 17, 2024.)

for some zany, off-label reasons

confetti

With over one million people in attendance at the New Year's Eve celebrations in New York City's Time Square – the biggest party in the city required an extra large clean-up crew.

"Every year, this holiday gives people an opportunity to begin anew and start with a clean slate. To that end, DSNY is proud to deliver a clean street, right here in Times Square," said Commissioner Tisch in a statement.

Around 187 workers from the New York City Department of Sanitation, the world's largest municipal sanitation force, cleared over 100,000 pounds of confetti from the New Year's Eve celebration inside Times Square before daybreak on New Year's Day, according to the city of New York.
(Stepheny Price. New Year's Eve in Times Square rings in over 100,000 pounds of confetti in clean up efforts. Fox News. January 1, 2024.)

fascism/fascist

Italy, wrote the situationist philosopher Guy Debord in 1968, “sums up the social contradictions of the entire world”. As such, it was a “laboratory for international counter-revolution”.

Political analysts the world over are now busy parsing Giorgia Meloni’s statements to determine if she is a fascist, a neofascist or a post-fascist. Why, they ask, are Italians seemingly willing to consider a return to the politics of their country’s darkest hour?

But is Italy really dealing with the resurrection of its fascist past? And, more important, is Italy a laboratory whose experiment the rest of the world could eventually follow? The answers, respectively, are: no and (therefore) yes.
(Lorenzo Marsili. Italy’s Giorgia Meloni is no Mussolini – but she may be a Trump. The Guardian. September 28, 2022.)

Fascio rivoluzionario d’ azione internazionalista

この政治団体のメンバーは、イタリア語でFascista(複数形Fascisti)と呼ばれました。

al fresco

Al fresco dining may be the key to the Big Apple’s post-quarantine restaurant scene, industry insiders say.

Social-distancing rules mean that restaurants could be forced to reopen with 50 percent fewer customers because diners will need to be seated at least six feet apart. While that could present big problems for eateries accustomed to packing tables together, it’s an opportunity for facilities big on space.
(Jennifer Gould Keil. Al fresco dining may be key to NYC’s restaurants reopening. New York Post. May 10, 2020.)

Al fresco dining

simpatico

WASHINGTON – Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is looking for his Joe Biden.

Biden has begun the vetting process for a running mate after announcing his vice presidential committee on April 30. Biden has previously told donors that he would like the vetting process done by July.

Biden has committed to having a woman as his potential vice president.
(Rebecca Morin. Joe Biden needs his Joe Biden. Here's a look at the women who could be on his vice presidential shortlist. USA Today. May 11, 2020.)

“And so I'm going to need a woman vice president who has the capacity, has strengths where I have weaknesses,” he said. Biden has noted he is looking for vice presidential candidate with whom he can be "simpatico."
(ibid.)

The Rise of Super Solo Culture"という記事をとても興味深く読みました。

A decade ago, many Japanese were so embarrassed to be seen eating alone in the school or office cafeteria that they’d opt to eat in a bathroom stall. Appearing friendless was a no-no, leading to what became known as “benjo meshi” – taking a “toilet lunch”.

But many think Japan is changing in a big way. One of those people is Miki Tateishi, a bartender in Tokyo. She works at Bar Hitori, a cosy spot in the Shinjuku nightlife district that is designed for solo drinkers.

The bar, which opened in mid-2018, represents an unusual opportunity in conformity-driven Japan – to go out and drink by yourself. And it’s doing well: instead of hiding in toilet stalls, people are stepping out and embracing being seen solo.
(Bryan Lufkin. The rise of Japan's 'super solo' culture. BBC News. January 15, 2020.)

Japan's 'super solo' society

imbroglio

WASHINGTON — The Secretary of Commerce threatened to fire top employees at the federal scientific agency responsible for weather forecasts last Friday after the agency’s Birmingham office contradicted President Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian might hit Alabama, according to three people familiar with the discussion.

That threat led to an unusual, unsigned statement later that Friday by the agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, disavowing the National Weather Service’s position that Alabama was not at risk. The reversal caused widespread anger within the agency and drew accusations from the scientific community that the National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, had been bent to political purposes.
(Commerce Chief Threatened Firings at NOAA After Trump’s Dorian Tweets, Sources Say. New York Times. September 9, 2019.)

The accusations against Mr. Ross are the latest developments in a political imbroglio that began more than a week ago, when Dorian was bearing down on the Bahamas and Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter that Alabama would be hit “harder than anticipated.” A few minutes later, the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Ala., posted on Twitter that “Alabama will NOT see any impacts from Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane Dorian will be felt across Alabama.”
(ibid.)

a political imbroglio

vendetta

The Trump administration’s corrosive, norm-busting treatment of the press continued Wednesday as the latest twist in President Trump’s ongoing vendetta with CNN. After serving as the pool reporter—rotating designated reporters that represent all outlets at certain events—for an afternoon meeting between Trump and president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the White House informed Collins that should [sic] would not be able to attend an open press availability between the two leaders later that day.
(Elliot Hannon. White House Bars CNN Reporter for “Shouting Questions” During Oval Office Press Event. Slate Magazine. July 25, 2018.)

President Trump’s ongoing vendetta with CNN

salvo

Daniel Loeb, the hedge fund mogul known for his aggressive investment stances, intensified pressure on Nestlé on Sunday, calling on the board of the global food giant to split the company into three divisions.

In a letter, Mr. Loeb noted that his hedge fund, Third Point, had invested more than $3 billion in Nestlé, and called on the board to be “bolder” and “faster” in reimagining the company.

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé. “This is a call for urgency,” Mr. Loeb wrote, arguing that the company has not moved with enough speed to shed its less profitable divisions. Mr. Loeb has pushed Nestlé before, arguing that it should sell its stake in L’Oréal, the cosmetics maker.
(Jessica Silver-Greenberg. Activist Investor Daniel Loeb Intensifies Pressure on Nestlé to Reorganize. New York Times. July 1, 2018.)

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé.

antic

Argentina legend Maradona taken to hospital after bizarre antics

Argentina legend Diego Maradona was taken to the hospital Tuesday after Argentina’s dramatic, 2-1 win against Nigeria, according to ESPN Deportes. Why he was taken to the hospital is unclear.

Maradona, regarded by many as the best soccer player ever, acted erratically during the match, as he danced with a Nigeria fan before the match, fell asleep during the first half and celebrated Marcos Rojo’s 86th-minute winner with a middle-fingered outburst toward Nigeria fans in the crowd.
(Jake Nisse. Argentina legend Maradona taken to hospital after bizarre antics. New York Post. June 26, 2018.)

lido

Samantha Martin, a publicist, wraps up her workday by sending one last e-mail, shutting her laptop — and heading up to the lido deck, where she’ll recharge, poolside, while her co-workers finish up in their Midtown office.

The 46-year-old is one of many New Yorkers who’ve discovered the joys of living and working on a cruise ship, for weeks or months at a time. Contrary to the stereotype of cruise aficionados being retirees, people in their 20s, 30s and 40s have embraced this lifestyle as a way to see the world and take a break from NYC’s crushing cost of living.
(Anna Davies. Why these couples are leaving NYC to live on cruise ships. New York Post. May 27, 2017.)

lido deck, poolside

(2) ― virtuosi

On Feb. 26, Hamilton will mark the 200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth with a solo piano recital titled “Liszt and His Contemporaries: A Pianistic Panorama.”

Sponsored by Washington University’s Department of Music in Arts & Sciences, the program will include works by Liszt as well as by Charles Valentin Alkan (1813-88), a friend of the composer and among the most celebrated pianists of his day; and by Liszt’s longtime rival, the composer and virtuoso Sigismond Thalberg (1812-71).

“Kenneth Hamilton’s recital offers a rare opportunity to hear music composed by three of the most renowned piano virtuosi of the nineteenth century,” says Dolores Pesce, professor and chair of music, who has written extensively on Liszt’s life and music.
(Liam Otten. Scottish pianist Kenneth Hamilton Feb. 26. Newsroom, Washington University in St. Louis. February 21, 2011.)
