know which side one’s bread is buttered on

know which side one’s bread is buttered on

The latest mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas has once again elicited the “thoughts and prayers” from Congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. They are probably getting sick and tired of having to take time out of their busy schedules consolidating their power and financial gains to issue such boilerplate platitudes. After all, this was the 213th mass shooting in the first 144 days of 2022 in the USA (source: Gun Violence Archive).

The lobbyist loot that finds its way into their pockets via “campaign contributions” from firearms manufacturers and the National Rifle Association (NRA) compels them to avoid even attempting to pass legislation that might help alleviate this home-grown problem. They know which side their bread is buttered on and if it seems they value gun “rights” over human life, so be it. So far, luckily, it hasn’t been their children that have been slaughtered.
(Dexter K Oliver. Editorial: American as Apple Pie. Gila Herald. May 28, 2022.)

They know which side their bread is buttered on

If you know which side your bread is buttered, you understand fully how you are likely to benefit from a situation, and you know what to do or who to please in order to put yourself in the best possible situation.

dough

He made away with a lot of doughnuts — but no dough.

A hatchet-wielding thief was only thinking with his stomach when he robbed an Oregon doughnut shop this weekend — stealing a box of treats but not a cent from the register, police said.

Christopher James, 40, allegedly barged into a Voodoo Doughnut location in downtown Portland around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, weapon in hand.

James jumped over the counter and began stuffing a box with doughnuts, Portland police spokesman Sgt. Kevin Allen told The Oregonian. Nothing else was taken, Allen said.
(Amanda Woods. Hungry thief steals doughnuts, leaves cash in Oregon heist: cops. New York Post. March 9, 2020.)

He made away with a lot of doughnuts — but no dough.

breadwinner

Many husbands still want to be the “man of the house.”

In fact, if a man’s wife starts contributing even half of the household income, he starts suffering psychological distress, according to a new study published on International Men’s Day — which, coincidentally, is a date intended to raise awareness of men’s issues, such as mental health and toxic masculinity.

Dr. Joanna Syrda, an economist at the University of Bath’s School of Management, studied more than 6,000 American heterosexual couples over 15 years. And she found that men were at their most anxious when they were the sole breadwinner at home, burdened with the responsibility of paying all the bills. But their stress also spiked if their wives became the breadwinners, instead.
(Nicole Lyn Pesche. Men stress out if they’re not the breadwinner: study. New York Post. November 20, 2019.)

procrastibaking?

All procrastibakers do not bake alike.

Procrastibaking — the practice of baking something completely unnecessary, with the intention of avoiding “real” work — is a surprisingly common habit that has only recently acquired a name. Medical students, romance writers, freelance web designers: Almost anyone who works at home and has a cookie sheet in the cupboard can try it.

“I started procrastibaking in college as a way to feel productive while also avoiding my schoolwork,” said Wesley Straton, a graduate student in Brooklyn. “Baking feels like a low-stakes artistic outlet.”

Some procrastibakers like to make long, slow recipes that break up the entire day, returning to their spreadsheets or study guides in between steps like proofing, chilling and rising. Those who use baking as a transition into a creative state of mind are more likely to stir up a quick banana bread or pan of brownies.
(Julia Moskin. Why Work When You Can Procrastibake? New York Times. May 15, 2018.)

Collins Dictionary

The art of avoiding all serious tasks by spending all of your time baking cakes, biscuits and other tasty treats.

bread-and-butter

SAP Launches Cloudier Version of its Bread-and-Butter Software

Business software giant SAP on Thursday introduced a cloudier version of its technology as it continues to push into the modern world of public cloud computing.

The new product, unveiled at an event in New York, promises to let business customers perform the same accounting, financial, and manufacturing management tasks as before, but in a more modern and efficient manner.
(Barb Darrow. SAP Launches Cloudier Version of its Bread-and-Butter Software. Fortune. February 9, 2017.)

The candidates have debated bread-and-butter issues like education, safety and transportation.
(Washington Post, 2015)

Americans, cynical yet desperate for leadership, were unshakably gloomy about their job security, their access to health care and their children's chances for prosperity in a global economy. They had grown weary of 12 years of Republican rule, symbolized by a president who seemed insensitive to their bread-and-butter concerns.
(Newsweek, 1993)

Almost every household in the UK regularly buys bread, but are you using your loaf when it comes to this popular product?

“Most of us mindlessly pick up a loaf of bread once or twice a week without really knowing what’s in it. We just assume it’s healthy,” says nutritionist Vicki Edgson.
(Just how unhealthy is our daily bread? Use your loaf and find out. Mirror.co.uk. March 22, 2012.)

Use your loaf...

food pantry

New York’s homeless masses are sour on Chobani yogurt.

The 5,000-plus cups of the Greek yogurt that were supposed to be sent to the Sochi Olympics but were denied by Russian customs will instead be donated to New York City food pantries — but they are a tough sell, workers said on Thursday.

"They look at it and go, 'Eww.' They never ate something like it before. [They] are used to the sweet yogurt," said Debbie Torres, a kitchen worker at Food Bank For New York City, which will receive loads of Chobani this week.
(Sochi yogurt going to NY’s needy... but they don't want it. New York Post. February 13, 2014.)

donated to New York City food pantries

1. An organization or group that sorts and packages donated foodstuffs for distribution directly to people in need.
2. The building or location where such distribution takes place.

"pantry"の語源を紐解いてみますと、ラテン語のpanis("bread"、つまりパンの意)に遡ります。

American Heritage Dictionary

French toast n. Sliced bread soaked in a batter of milk and egg and lightly fried.

Good bread, however, rarely disappoints. Countless great recipes make use of it, and every culinary culture has a cache of them, so the ageing loaf is never out of season. I can't get through summer without knocking up several panzanellas (a Tuscan bread-and-tomato salad) and one or two pappa al pomodoros (a rustic soup made with much the same ingredients), while at this time of year leftover half-loaves are often turned into something sweet, such as a custard-soaked bread-and-butter pudding. French toast is another favourite: aka pain perdu, or plain old eggy bread, this makes a weekly outing in my house in colder months. A slice or two, denuded of crust, soaked in beaten egg (for 20 minutes, ideally), fried in butter until browned, then sprinkled with sugar is a breakfast fit for un roi. I'd take it over a croissant any day.
(Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's recipes for leftover bread. The Guardian. February 10, 2012.)
