jaw crashes to the floor

He came. He Sawe. He conquered. Not so very long ago, the idea of anyone running an official marathon in under two hours lurked only in the realms of the fantastical and theoretical: part holy grail, part scientific curiosity.

But over the course of one hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds of a tumultuous spring day in London, Sabastian Sawe turned it into a brain-spinning reality. Imagine running 100 metres in under 17 seconds – and then keeping that pace up for another 26 and a bit miles. That is what the 31-year-old Kenyan did.

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor, the search for comparisons began. Was it up there with Sir Roger Bannister’s sub-four-minute mile in 1954? Or maybe Usain Bolt’s 100m world record of 9.58sec? Neither suggestion felt entirely outlandish. For this was an act of serene beauty and supreme destruction.
(Sean Ingle. Sabastian Sawe breaks two-hour barrier to make history in London Marathon. The Guardian. April 26, 2026.)

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor..

jaw(s) crash to the floor

jaw drops to the floor
jaw fell to the floor
jaw hit the floor

Once jaws had stopped crashing to the floor"とは何が言いたいのか、また悩ましい。

not a pimple on someone’s ass

Democratic strategist James Carville said Thursday that murdered activist Charlie Kirk is unworthy of being compared to the recently slain filmmaker Rob Reiner in terms of his influence.

“I’m sorry. I don’t want anybody to get shot… young kids, I hate that, but Charlie Kirk was not a pimple on Rob Reiner’s ass when it comes to influence, when it comes to impact, when it comes to anything else.
(Alexander Hall. James Carville says Charlie Kirk’s influence wasn’t ‘a pimple on Rob Reiner’s ass’ in scathing comments. New York Post. December 18, 2025.)

Charlie Kirk was not a pimple on Rob Reiner’s ass when it comes to influence…

a pimple on Rob Reiner’s ass

Charlie Kirk is unworthy of being compared to the recently slain filmmaker Rob Reiner in terms of his influence

Charlie Kirk was not a pimple on Rob Reiner’s ass

not a pimple on someone’s ass

not make a pimple on someone’s ass

person A does not make a pimple on person B’s ass

not worth the paper it’s written on

Matt Pearl, a special advisor to the deputy national security advisor at the National Security Council in the Biden administration and now the Strategic Technologies Program director at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said DeepSeek's privacy policy implies that people have control over what is collected, but it should induce alarm.

"DeepSeek's privacy policy is not worth the paper it is written on," Pearl said. DeepSeek is subjected to PRC laws and anything entered into the app is fair game. Through keystroke patterns, a DeepSeek user can be tracked across all devices, information gathered from advertisers, and DeepSeek could also seek to leverage cameras and microphones, according to Pearl.
(Kevin Williams. Chinese AI app DeepSeek was downloaded by millions. Deleting it might come next. CNBC. February 2, 2025.)

DeepSeek's privacy policy is not worth the paper it is written on

この、"not worth the paper it's written on"というのは慣用表現です。

not worth the paper it's written/printed on
idiom
: not of real value : not legally valid

shitless

Some White House staffers have been forced to tiptoe around President Biden when briefing him on certain topics because they want to avoid eliciting his wrath and are “scared s–tless” of him, a new report says.

“It’s like, ‘You can’t include that, that will set him off,’ or ‘Put that in, he likes that,’”a senior administration official told Politico, referring to how some of the 81-year-old president’s aides feel they have to walk through a minefield before briefings to avoid him getting angry with them.
(Ryan King. WH staffers reportedly ‘scared s–tless’ of erratic Biden, tiptoe around ‘isolated’ president during briefings: ‘Not a pleasant person to be around’. New York Post. July 2, 2024.)

scared s–tless

shitless

Vulgar Slang
Used to intensify a verb with a personal object or a past participle modifying a personal noun or pronoun: scared him shitless; was bored shitless.

From the reflex of involuntary defecation that can result from extreme terror.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

fricking

The Biden campaign gleefully turned one of Donald Trump’s favorite digs against him on Saturday, branding the 78-year-old candidate as woefully geriatric in response to his embarrassing stumble at a Minnesota rally on Friday.

Video from the event shared by Biden-Harris HQ on X showed Trump grabbing the lectern during his remarks on stage, after nearly toppling the podium over.

“You know this is the worst platform, who put this stage up?” he ad-libbed, cutting into his own remarks. “The fricking place is falling down.”

“I notice it keeps tilting to the left,” Trump joked, “Like too many other things!”
(Amanda Yen. Biden Camp Has a Field Day With Wobbly Trump at Podium. The Daily Beast. May 19, 2024.)

The fricking place is falling down.

Roosters act differently when faced with another chicken versus just their own reflection. This may mean that the birds can recognise themselves in a mirror, a key test of self-awareness in animals. The way researchers tailored this mirror test to roosters may open up new methods of determining self-recognition in a diversity of animal species.

In the traditional mirror self-recognition test, developed in 1970, researchers place a mark on an animal’s body in a spot that it could only see reflected in a mirror. They note if the animal inspects or touches the mark while examining its reflection, suggesting it understands the reflection represents its own body. Precious few non-human species have passed this test, but those that have include some great apes, dolphins, elephants and magpies. In recent years, a few researchers have claimed other species – such as penguins, horses, cleaner wrasse fish and manta rays – have passed the test, but not without controversy.
(Jake Buehler. Roosters may be able to recognise themselves in a mirror. New Scientist. October 25, 2023.)

Precious few non-human species have passed this test

My heart missed a beat.

A Tesla owner said he was "flabbergasted" when he and his partner were hit with a hefty bill to fix their electric vehicle.

Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey told the Scottish news outlet Edinburgh Live they were billed £17,374, or about $21,000, to fix their Tesla after its battery was damaged by rain last week.

"I honestly can't believe that this has happened. When I first got the call, I thought we would get a bill for £500 or £1,000," Bacigalupo told Edinburgh Live. "When they said over 17 grand — it's absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly."
(Jyoti Mann. A Tesla owner says his 'heart missed a beat' when he received a $21,000 bill after the battery was damaged by rain. Business Insider. October 16, 2023.)

My heart missed a beat, honestly.

When I learned I was on live television, my heart skipped a beat.
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

no stranger to

Apple's launch party for its latest iPhone was marred slightly yesterday as the French National Frequency Agency (ANFR) told the company that its iPhone 12 breached electromagnetic wave limits.

At issue is the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) observed on the iPhone 12, which the ANFR has said exceeds European limits.
(Richard Speed. iPhone 12 deemed too hot to handle for France's radiation standards. The Register. September 13, 2023.)

French authorities are no strangers to antagonizing US tech giants. Starlink's license was pulled in 2022 following protests, and schools were instructed to stop using free versions of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace amid privacy concerns.
(ibid.)

no strangers to

no strangers to antagonizing US tech giants

obscenely

As a huge search and rescue operation continues for a missing submersible in the Atlantic one thing has become apparent, that the vessel was not as “obscenely safe” as the company’s CEO had promised.

Stockton Rush, founder of Titanic exploration company OceanGate, is one of the five people on board the Titan, which disappeared while heading to the wreckage on Monday.

Titan has allegedly not been approved or certified by any regulatory body and didn’t require its passengers to have any diving experience, despite OceanGate offering the activity on its eight day voyages.
(Rebecca Borg. ‘Obscenely safe’: OceanGate CEO’s chilling interview. News.com.au. June 21, 2023.)

obscenely safe

The founder of the company behind the Titan submersible previously described his industry as "obscenely safe" and complained that passenger-vessel regulations held back innovation.
(Mia Jankowicz. The maker of the lost Titan submersible previously complained about strict passenger-vessel regulations, saying the industry was 'obscenely safe'. Insider. June 20, 2023.)

so excessive as to be offensive

obscene wealth
obscene waste

in a heartbeat

"If they do get laid off, they will be scooped up in a heartbeat because demand outstrips supply and will for a long time," she added.
(Daniella Genovese. Google, Facebook CEOs warn slackers, what it means. Fox Business. August 2, 2022.)

Tenenbaum said she would support Joe Biden in 2024 in a heartbeat, though leaves open the idea that he might not run.
(Christopher Cadelago. Biden keeps South Carolina guessing. Politico. August 14, 2022.)

bat an eye

A man was spotted Tuesday night urinating on an F train passing through Brooklyn – while several straphangers didn’t even bat an eye.

The man was caught on camera relieving himself on a car in plain view of about 10 people while lying horizontally on a bench seat in between the Jay Street-MetroTech and York Street subway stations at about 6:15 p.m., according to a witness.

About three commuters across from the man darted out of the line of fire during the disgusting act, but multiple strangers in a row of adjacent benches didn’t seem fazed and remained seated.
(Kenneth Garger. Passenger caught urinating on NYC subway as commuters seem unfazed? New York Post. March 8, 2022.)

wafer-thin

Swiss voters narrowly supported a ban on burqas and other full-face coverings in one of the most contentious referendums yet in the country’s unique system of direct democracy, and a further sign that a pushback against Islam is gaining ground in Europe.

A wafer-thin majority of 51% of those taking part voted to outlaw full-face coverings in public compared with 49% against, according to provisional officials results of Sunday’s vote, though face-masks to slow the spread of Covid-19 will be permitted, and burqas and niqab veils will still be allowed to be worn in places of worship.
(James Hookway. Switzerland to Ban Burqas and Veils After Close-Run Vote. The Wall Street Journal. March 7, 2021.)

narrowly (pass, back, votes...)
close-run (vote)

a wafer-thin majority... voted...

a breath of~

Mrs. Daley was in the public eye for more than 40 years without a breath of scandal or even criticism.
(Chicago Sun Times, 2003)

a slight indication
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

showstopping

SUPER-sized floor-to-ceiling mega TVs, ‘infinity’ screens and the first-ever rotating ‘vertical’ TV – Samsung has made a bold pitch to the millennial and luxury markets for 2020.

Revealing its plans to make ‘screens everywhere’ in 2020, the tech giant rolled out a suite of show-stopping TV innovation during its ‘First Look’ event at global tech show CES in Las Vegas today.

At the top of its hit list is the phone-obsessed millennials who nearly always shoot video in portrait-mode, making for a poor viewing experience on traditionally horizontal TV screens.
(Tanya French. CES 2020: Samsung unveils ‘Infinity’ and ‘The Sero’ TVs. News.com.au. January 6, 2019.)

showstopping

There is no two ways about it.

Aliens exist and they could be living among us, the first British astronaut into space has said.

Dr Helen Sharman, who went into space 28 years ago, said it is without a doubt that “all sorts of forms of life” are alive in the universe - but perhaps we “simply can’t see them” as they are so different to humanity.

“Aliens exist, there’s no two ways about it,” Dr Sharman told the Observer Magazine. “There are so many billions of stars out there in the universe that there must be all sorts of forms of life.

“Will they be like you and me, made up of carbon and nitrogen? Maybe not. It’s possible they’re right here right now and we simply can’t see them.”
(Verity Bowman. Aliens exist but we may simply not see them, says first British astronaut into space. The Telegraph. January 6, 2019.)

Merriam-Websterによると、

used to say that something is definitely true

wayの用法 ― way

way too long
way too heavy

Usage Note: Way has long been an intensifying adverb meaning "to a great degree," as in way over budget. This usage is both acceptable and common but has an informal ring. Way is also used as a general intensifier, as in way cool and way depressing. This usage remains a hallmark of casual speech and is not appropriate for formal contexts. · In American English ways is often used as an equivalent of way in phrases such as a long ways to go. This usage is considered nonstandard by most editors, though it appears occasionally in less formal texts.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

whoop

not a whoop

That's how I felt about Russia, that's how I felt about Stalin. I don't care a whoop for socialism, or totalitarianism, or any of their "isms."
(World Affairs, 1991)

It isn’t worth a fig.
I would not give a fig for it.

Who gives a flying fig about people who gossip?
(ABC Primetime, 2011)

He hasn't a sou.

jot

The sun creases around his eyes had deepened, additional touches of aging, though he seemed to have lost not a jot of his vitality.
(Anne MCCaffrey. All the Weyrs of Pern. 1991.)

And that's because it's not just the president and the congress, Americans don't care a jot about foreign policy.
(CBS, 2015)
