シリコンバレー発： 一か八かの買収劇 ― high-stakes

シリコンバレー事情を常にウォッチしている訳ではないのですが、今日たまたま目についたニュースから。

サーバー製品などのストレージ関連大手のEMC社がGreenplumというベンチャーを買収するというニュースです。この業界は”仁義なき戦い”なのでしょうか、この買収劇もニュースになるところからして、"high-stakes"な性質のもののようです。

ところで、"high-stakes"って？

"stake"とは、”賭け金”とか”利害関係”という訳語が一般的ですが、"high"であるということは、その賭け金が高額であるということ、また利害関係の強さ、大きさを言っていると思われます。

In a new development in the high-stakes battle over "Big Data," EMC on Tuesday announced plans to acquire Greenplum, a San Mateo startup that specializes in high-performance analytics software.

EMC, a Massachusetts-based data storage leader whose previous Silicon Valley acquisitions included Data Domain and VMware, did not disclose the size of the all-cash transaction. When the deal is finalized, Greenplum would be the fifth California-based company EMC has acquired in the past two years.

For EMC, technology from Greenplum, which bills itself as "the faster, smarter database," will represent the foundation of a new product division within its information infrastructure business, which will be led by Bill Cook, currently Greenplum's CEO. "The data warehousing world is about to change," EMC President Pat Gelsinger declared in a news release.
