アメリカで猛威をふるったハリケーンHelene（ヘレネというカタカナの記載が見られますが、アメリカ人は「ヘリーン」と発音するようです）による被害の爪痕が報じられています。

甚大な被害を受けた住民に対する支援を巡って、またこれほど激甚化の背景にあるとされる地球温暖化は大統領選の争点にもなっており、共和、民主が対立する構図ともなっています。

ハリス副大統領が、イスラエルによる対ヒズボラ空爆で被害が出ているレバノンに対し185億ドルの資金援助を発表したところ、国内のハリケーン被害をそっちのけで国外に資金提供とは何事かと批判が沸き起こっている模様です。

SNSではハリス氏を非難する投稿が相次いでいるようです。そのひとつとしてテキサス州知事の投稿内容を引用していますが、

stiff-arming

という表現が出てきます。恐らく投稿内容（テキスト）をそのまま引用していることから、若干読みづらいものがあるのですが、

Kamala is touting giving money to the people of Lebanon while (she is) stiff-arming the humanitarian crisis in North Carolina

という文になります。

この"stiff-arm"という表現ですが、英和辞書を引くとstraight-armを参照とあり、これはアメフトの用語で、タックルしようとする敵に対して腕をピンと張って押しのける動作を言うようです。残念ながら英和辞書にはそれ以上の説明が見当たらないのですが、これはつまりは相手を押し退けたり、拒絶する動作であり、ここでの意味合いもそのようなものなのだろうと思われます。

ところで、バイデン政権下でのハリケーン対応についてはかねてより対応のまずさを指摘する声があり、先月末の記事ですが以下のようなものがありました。

上記引用記事では、

となっています。これもコンテクストからはやはり拒絶の意味合いだと想像がつきます。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによりますと、"stiff-arm"の定義は、

to treat with disdain or neglect

となっています。

手元にある研究社新英和大辞典もランダムハウス英和辞書もアメフト用語という以上の説明が無いのはやや不思議です。
