idiolect

On Friday, exactly six months after Nancy Guthrie was abducted, police released two ransom notes in the hope that they would help identify her kidnappers.

While the language in the notes might seem straightforward, police said the writer's "distinct linguistic characteristics" may be recognisable.

"There are a number of pieces of information in these notes that just might jar someone to say 'you know, I've heard that'," said Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

A forensic linguist told the BBC it's possible to glean crucial information about a person from just a few sentences.

"It's built upon the premise that we each carry an idiolect, or a word print, of our own that distinguishes our language from others," said William Eggington, a retired linguistics professor from Brigham Young University who is now a forensic consultant.
(How ransom notes could help catch Nancy Guthrie's kidnappers. BBC News. August 4, 2026.)

Schrodinger's ~

Iran talks are on, or off, or somewhere in the middle.

It’s a familiar pattern at this point, which goes like this: The White House threatens strikes on Iran, backs down in the eleventh hour in the name of a coming deal and then grumbles over the collapse of the aforementioned agreement — leading back to the threat of military escalation.
(Schrödinger’s Iran talks. Politico. August 3, 2026.)

NATO is asking whether the United States under Donald Trump is still reliable. The answer is simultaneously: yes, no, maybe.

Schrödinger’s cat is the best-known image of indeterminacy: inside the closed box, the cat is both alive and dead. NATO now faces a similar ambiguity. Is the United States still reliable? Under Donald Trump, the most honest answer is simultaneously: yes, no, maybe.
(Schrödinger’s Trump. European Policy Center. Jun 11, 2026.)

Meanwhile, the mackerel are out there in their billions. Swarming towards the coast. Simultaneously endangered and self-evidently not. It was never the cats; these are Schrödinger’s fish.

search and seizure

Southold now has 11 Flock Safety cameras throughout the town. The tech, criticized as “Big Brother”-style mass surveillance systems for the local government, have been installed throughout Greenport, East Marion, Mattituck and Peconic, with the first four Flock cameras deployed in late 2022 while seven more were added last year.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle have introduced legislation in an attempt to cap Flock’s reach and strengthen constitutional unreasonable “search and seizure” protections.

State lawmakers are considering a bill that would restrict how government agencies can use and share the license plate data acquired through the cameras.
(Brandon Cruz. Flock Safety cameras vandalized on Long Island after accusations cop tracked lover. New York Post. August 2, 2026.)

search and seizure

edge case

Flock’s technology seemed to overlook the mix of large and small numbers on the Land Rover’s New Jersey dealer tags. “The Flock camera saw my entire plate, but it still flagged it as a match,” said Feder, who reviewed the photos the Flock camera had taken of his vehicle during his conversation with law enforcement.

On The Drive’s podcast, Langley told Feder the incident was an “edge case” and said the biggest problem in it was the “archaic” federal database. In Feder’s own writing about the encounter, he said that officers told him that he should keep the car parked at home for the time being, as he could be flagged again if another Flock camera picked him up in another town.
(T.M. Brown. Flock cameras are getting mobbed. CNN. July 31, 2026.)

distress lane

More details about ex-Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s OWI arrest are coming to light, including a new allegation that an open container of booze was found in his car after he was stopped by cops.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office released to the California Post copies of three citations its officers hit Romo with in the immediate aftermath of his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin, and one of them claimed the CBS NFL analyst had an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” located on the passenger side of his black Jeep.

The second citation Romo was tagged with was for “unsafe passing on right.” Police wrote in the document that he drove “in the marked right distress lane to pass vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 during rush hour traffic” before he “cut across the marked gore” to get to where he wanted to go.
(Edward Lewis. Tony Romo had open bottle of alcohol in car during OWI arrest: cops. New York Post. July 29, 2026.)

he drove “in the marked right distress lane to pass vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 during rush hour traffic”

MILWAUKEE -- An SUV crashed into a tree off southbound I-43 near Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee Monday afternoon, Oct. 22. Two people needed to be extricated from the car.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle struck a tree, which was broken and fell into traffic, blocking one lane.

Deputies investigating the incident located a second vehicle whose driver indicated the SUV had passed him in the right distress lane at the top of the Silver Spring on-ramp. Neither driver was suspected of being impaired.
(2 hurt after vehicle crashes into tree off I-43 SB near Hampton Avenue. FOX 6 Now Milwaukee. October 23, 2018.)

hyperscaler

The race to build artificial intelligence infrastructure at a trillion-dollar annual clip is eroding the free cash flow and increasing balance-sheet risk at so-called hyperscalers, warned Moody’s Ratings.

In a research note released this week, Moody’s said that the spending surge is forcing even the world’s most cash-rich corporations like Alphabet and Microsoft to lean heavily on debt, stock sales and off-balance-sheet moves to fund their AI ambitions.

“Previously, these companies relied on asset-light structures centered on software, intellectual property, and scalable cloud services that required modest capital investment,” Moody’s said in the Wednesday note. “The transition from asset-light to asset-heavy models requires unprecedented levels of investment and capital raising.”
(Hugh Son. Moody’s says ‘unprecedented’ AI spending threatens credit quality of Amazon, Meta, Alphabet and others. CNBC. July 24, 2026.)

It may be difficult to remember, but there was a time when a company’s entire data center might have been run from a lone server within an office cabinet.

Then came hypervisors, whose use as abstraction layers let apps in virtual machines (VMs) be relocated from one physical hardware installation to another. This was a key moment in the rise of hyperscale data centers.

Usually, the original, on-premises data centers of old simply cannot handle the volume of data now generated, especially that created by hyperscaled applications.

Hyperscale data centers (also called hyperscalers) occupy considerably larger physical space than traditional on-premises data centers, which have tended to be sized somewhere in the 10,000-square-foot range.
(What is hyperscale? ibm.com

deplete

This has been a touchy subject for some time within the US administration. Last month, when pressed on the subject, Hegseth denied that supplies were thinning out.

His position seems to have changed since. Last week, he told the Senate Appropriations Committee that the Pentagon needed another $87bn (£68bn) to address "critical shortfalls", including equipment.

Exact ammunition expenditures and remaining stockpiles remain classified. But publicly available data compiled by the Washington DC-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) paints a stark picture of depleted stockpiles that, in the short-term, are difficult to replace.
(Bernd Debusmann Jr. As the US pauses the war with Iran, is Trump really running out of weapons? BBC News. July 27, 2026.)

singularity

singularity

OpenAI's CEO says we've reached a point in the AI race that is the stuff of science fiction novels.

"We are now, like, in the singularity," Sam Altman said on Saturday's episode of the "Relentless" podcast.

The singularity is often regarded as the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and begins advancing at a pace that's difficult for people to predict or control.
(Lakshmi Varanasi.Sam Altman says we are in the singularity: 'This is the moment'. Business Insider. July 27, 2026.)

A hypothetical future point in time when artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and be able to self-replicate and improve itself autonomously.

ALPR

Automatic License Plate Reader

Flock cameras are automatic license plate readers, or ALPRs. There are other ALPRs in the market, but Flock cameras are some of the most well-known ALPRs.

The cameras, however, capture more than just license plate information.

Flock Safety defines their cameras as: "a license plate reader camera built to identify vehicle details that may help generate investigative leads. That includes the license plate, along with attributes like make, model, color, and other visible characteristics. Flock cameras are not general-purpose surveillance systems designed to identify people," according to Flock Safety's website.
(Ernesto Centeno Araujo. What are Flock cameras? Why have they caused a stir in California? Desert Sun. July 22, 2026.)

Flock Camera

millstone around your neck

Election deniers who played prominent roles in efforts to overturn the 2020 results triumphed in statewide Republican primaries Tuesday: Rep. Andy Biggs for governor, state Rep. Alexander Kolodin for secretary of state, and state Senate President Warren Petersen for attorney general.

Their victories show GOP primary voters continue to prefer candidates who have pushed false narratives about elections or worked to overturn them. But that can prove toxic in November — and Democrats plan to make their rivals pay for those positions in the fall.

“It’s one of those things that just won’t go away,” said former Rep. Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.). “In the Republican Party in Arizona, in the primary, carrying the Trump line on virtually everything — and that includes election denialism — is still something that benefits you.”

But in the general election, “it’s a stone around your neck,” Salmon said. “Among independents and moderate Republicans who vote in the general election, election denialism is not an asset.”
(‘It’s a stone around your neck’: Arizona Republicans once again nominate 2020 election deniers. Politico. July 22, 2026.)

it’s a stone around your neck

millstone around one's neck

chancellor

Andy Burnham pledged to "bring back hope" to Britain, as he began his tenure as prime minister by appointing Labour stalwart John Healey as chancellor.

Speaking to broadcasters, Healey said the pair will "work in lockstep to meet the fiscal rules with a buffer against uncertainty" and on how they will "make life more affordable for working people right across the UK".
(Burnham pledges to 'bring back hope' as he makes Healey chancellor. BBC News. July 21, 2026.)

Chancellor of the Exchequer

The senior finance minister in the British government and a member of the prime minister's cabinet.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

circuit breaker

ANDY Burnham has promised to deliver a “circuit breaker for Britain” – but said the blueprint for his 10-year vision will not be unveiled until later this year.

The new Prime Minister pledged immediate help with the cost of living, saying families would get “some breathing space” from tomorrow when he unveils his first measures and explains “how we pay for them.”
(Martina Bet. 'NEED TO BE BETTER' Andy Burnham vows ‘this is a circuit breaker’ in first speech as PM – but we have to wait until later this YEAR for plan. The Sun. July 20, 2026.)

Burnham

circuit breaker

“I know people at home are fed up with politics. I hear you and I want to be honest with you – we have not been good enough, and we need to be better. We will be. We will make this moment a circuit breaker for Britain, bringing forward the biggest changes in the last 40 years – a new political model and a new economic model."
(ibid.)

Japan’s monarchy has for centuries maintained male-only succession, which is on-brand for a deeply patriarchal society where men dominate other spheres of life such as business and politics.

Now, that rule has come to threaten the very survival of the world’s oldest monarchy which, in recent decades, has spawned more daughters than sons.

To solve the dearth of heirs, government ministers have proposed reinstating former branches of the royal family, thereby expanding the pool of male successors. The changes are awaiting parliamentary approval.
(Japan is running out of royals. So why won’t it let women become emperor? CNN. July 14, 2026.)

the dearth of heirs

schlep

With the friendly skies increasingly becoming an inflight free-for-all, the Federal Aviation Administration is warning passengers against one dumb and dangerous evacuation habit — trying to leave with one’s bags.

“Save a life not a bag,” the organization cautioned in a video PSA with over 100,000 views on X.

he video was part of the “Save a Life, Not a Bag” campaign launched by the International Air Transport Association, or IATA, in June to help combat the uptick in people schlepping their suitcases during impromptu deplanings.
(Ben Cost. FAA warns that passengers are making life-threatening mistakes. New York Post. July 16, 2026.)

schlepping

cilantro

Amid an outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic gastrointestinal illness that has infected 3,309 people in Michigan as of July 14, at least some Taco Bell restaurants stopped serving lettuce and cilantro, the Detroit Free Press learned after visiting six metro Detroit locations July 8-9.

Employees at Taco Bell restaurants in Trenton, Woodhaven, Wyandotte, Taylor, Riverview and Southgate all said those fresh produce items are no longer being served. No officials from the government or Taco Bell have publicly linked the fresh produce from the restaurant chain to the outbreak.
(Several Taco Bells stop serving lettuce as cyclosporiasis cases rise. Detroit Free Press. July 14, 2026.)

cilantro

このラテン語がcoliandrum(何故かrがlに変化?)

grease one’s way

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo greased his way out of a ticket after allegedly failing to stop at a red light, simply by revealing his identity to a Las Vegas patrolman.

Bodycam footage captures the moment the officer approached the window of Lombardo’s light-gray Ford F-150, offering a polite, “Hello, how are you doing, sir?”

The highfaluting governor immediately cut him off, stating: “I’m Joe Lombardo.”
(Daniel Cody. Nevada governor pulled over, immediately flexes status and avoids red light ticket: ‘I’m Joe Lombardo’. New York Post. July 14, 2026.)

greased his way out of a ticket

high-tail it

high-tail it

Stores along the busy stretch of Chinatown have been here before. Occasional police raids force illicit merchants to high-tail it when the cops show up to confiscate their ill-gotten goods — only for the unscrupulous sidewalk peddlers to set up shop again when the coast is clear.
(NYPD raids illegal NYC vendors again — but Canal Street businesses say it won’t change a thing. New York Post. July 12, 2026.)

It’s an endless game of cat-and-mouse.

NYPD cops on Sunday launched their latest raid on the illegal open-air marketplace of counterfeits that has long turned Canal Street into an unsightly nightmare — but skeptical brick-and-mortar businesses say it won’t change a thing.

“They’re going to go wherever they get their stuff and set it right back up in five minutes,” the manager of a neighborhood beauty salon told The Post.
(NYPD raids illegal NYC vendors again — but Canal Street businesses say it won’t change a thing. New York Post. July 12, 2026.)

cat-and-mouse

1. Playfully or teasingly cruel, as in prolonging the pain or torment of another: the cat-and-mouse tactics of the interrogators.

2. Of or involving a suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted: "another cat-and-mouse thriller" (New York Times).
(American Heritage Dictionary)

behavior like that of a cat with a mouse: such as
a: the act of toying with or tormenting something before destroying it
b: a contrived action involving constant pursuit, near captures, and repeated escapes
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

embargo

The Trump administration is preparing a list of Spanish goods to potentially embargo, after President Donald Trump ordered officials to cut off trade with the European nation Thursday morning.

The Treasury Department will be working with the U.S. trade representative and Commerce Department to provide Trump “a menu of Spanish products that may be embargoed in the coming days,” a U.S.official said via email.
(US officials compiling 'menu' of Spanish goods, as Trump weighs embargo. Politico. July 8, 2026.)

shore

MIDTOWN EAST, Manhattan (WABC) -- Evacuation and frozen zones have shrunk as efforts to stabilize an under-construction high-rise in Midtown Manhattan continued on Tuesday night.

The installation of temporary shoring has begun at a high-rise at 235 E. 42nd St. after a structural column buckled on the 21st floor, said Department of Buildings Commissioner Ahmed Tigani in a Tuesday evening update.
(Midtown Manhattan buildings evacuated after columns found buckling at high-rise construction site. ABC7 New York. July 8, 2026.)

temporary shoring

maillot jaune

Emergency measures were implemented by the Tour de France organisers to combat the crushing heatwave that has settled on the race this year as the riders tackled stage four, at the end of which the cancer survivor Torstein Træen had stolen the yellow jersey and built an eight-minute lead on the four-time champion Tadej Pogacar.

“Most of all I am grateful to perform at the Tour,” Træen said after taking the maillot jaune. “It’s a pleasure to be here.”
(Jeremy Whittle. ‘Grateful’ Træen takes yellow jersey after Pedersen wins stage four amid 40C heat. The Guardian. July 7, 2026.)

OTT

Some details are surfacing from inside Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s mammoth Madison Square Garden nuptials – and they’re less than glowing reviews.

The wedding, attended by everyone from Steven Spielberg to Emma ‘Baby Spice’ Bunton to former Modern Family actor Eric Stonestreet, was “a bit of a s*** show,” one source told TMZ.

Another guest, also speaking anonymously, described the OTT wedding celebration to the Daily Mail as “tacky” and said guests faced long waits and queues for both food and drink.
(Nick Bond. Celeb chaos at Taylor Swift’s ‘tacky’ mega-wedding. News.com.au. July 7, 2026.)

 the OTT wedding celebration

Over The Top

Legionnaires’ disease

The number of Legionnaires’ disease cases in an outbreak on the Upper East Side has risen to 14 — as local health officials are still racing to find the source.

Fourteen people have been diagnosed with the potentially fatal pneumonia-like illness in the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hall and Yorkville as of Sunday, according to the New York City Health Department.
(Zoe Hussain. Mysterious Legionnaires’ disease outbreak skyrockets to 14 cases across 2 NYC neighborhoods. New York Post. July 5, 2026.)

legionella

The City Council last fall approved a bill requiring building owners to test for Legionella microbes at least every month during warmer months when cooling towers are in use in response to the deadly outbreak.
(ibid.)

trade dress

Two food service companies are in court over who gets to rule the roost on "6-7" chicken nuggets.

Perdue Foods is suing John Soules Foods after both companies launched frozen chicken nugget products inspired by the popular slang term "6-7." The nuggets are in the shape of 6's and 7's.

Perdue is alleging false designation of origin, unfair competition and trademark and trade dress infringement.
(Melina Khan. '6-7' chicken nuggets ruffle feathers. Why Perdue is suing a competitor. USA TODAY. July 2, 2026.)

trade dress infringement

the overall image of a product used in its marketing or sales that is composed of the nonfunctional elements of its design, packaging, or labeling (as colors, package shape, or symbols)
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

daylight

Drivers in Los Angeles County could be slapped with a $63 ticket under California’s “daylighting” law as deputies ramp up enforcement against motorists parking too close to crosswalks.

The daylighting law prohibits drivers from parking within 20 feet of the approach to a marked or unmarked crosswalk, or within 15 feet of a crosswalk with a curb extension, even if there are no painted curbs or posted signs.
(Nina Joudeh. The latest trick to catch LA drivers and hit them with a hefty fine. New York Post. July 1, 2026.)

California’s “daylighting” law

どうして、"daylight(ing)"なんでしょうか?

Officials said the measure is intended to improve visibility at intersections so drivers can better see pedestrians and pedestrians can more easily spot oncoming traffic.
(ibid.)

scuttlebutt

scuttlebutt

matchup

Seattle’s World Cup committee is pushing forward with “Pride Match” celebrations this week despite backlash from Egypt and Iran, who have called for the cancellation of LGBTQ+ rights festivities around the game.

Last year, Seattle’s local organizing committee, which is separate from Fifa, made plans for 26 June to be a Pride-themed match coinciding with the city’s annual Pride weekend.

In December, Egypt and Iran were drawn to play each other on that date in Seattle, causing a swift firestorm and condemnation from the two countries.

Egypt’s football association appealed to Fifa, saying it “categorically rejects any activities promoting LGBTQ during the match,” warning the events could “provoke cultural and religious sensitivities among fans”. Iran’s football federation was quoted suggesting the Pride designation was an “irrational move that supports a certain group”.

In Iran, LGBTQ+ relationships are illegal, and Egypt has a history of prosecuting queer and trans people.
(Sam Levin. Seattle prepares for unlikely matchup as its World Cup Pride celebration: Egypt v Iran. The Guardian. June 25, 2026.)

The pairing of two people or things, as for athletic competition or for comparison.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

narrowing

If you’re an older adult, you’ve probably fallen into the trap that one doctor calls “the narrowing.”

“Most of my patients have no idea it’s happening. They think it’s just aging. It’s not,” Dr. Howard Luks, an orthopedic surgeon, wrote on X.

“The narrowing is the slow shrinking of what your body allows you to do — or what you assume your body can or should be doing at your age.”

The problem, he said, is people experience some limitations and adjust to them, rather than try to push through or overcome them, assuming there’s nothing they can do about it.
(Allie Yang. Beware ‘the narrowing’ — doctor warns it can steal your strength as you age. New York Post. June 24, 2026.)

carousel

Financial Times

The ritual of the UK prime ministerial resignation is now all too familiar: the lectern in Downing Street, the premier blinking in the daylight; the catch in the voice as they finish their statement. That Sir Keir Starmer is the fifth British leader to have stood down midterm since the Brexit vote 10 years ago displays how deeply the country has fallen into a damaging habit that it badly needs to break. The effort to do so now shifts to the man set to succeed Starmer: Andy Burnham.

A root cause of the leadership carousel is the stagnation in living standards and deterioration of public services since the 2008 financial crisis, exacerbated by Brexit and the Covid pandemic. Recently it has often stemmed from party members electing leaders based more on their grassroots appeal than their likely capabilities in office.
(The revolving door of Downing Street. Financial Times. June 23, 2026.)

leadership carousel

managerial carousel
carousel of ~ changes

carousel of failure
carousel of chaos and crisis
carousel of scandals

Uzi

A father-son duo peddled illegal guns ranging from a lilac-colored revolver to fully automatic Uzi through an illicit “Iron Pipeline” from Georgia to New York City, authorities said Monday.

The high-powered weaponry — which also included three “switches” that can turn a semi-auto handgun into a “fully operational machine pistol” — was seized in a sting, according to NYPD officials.
(Greg Carlton. Father-son duo peddled guns — including lilac revolver and Uzi — in illicit ‘Iron Pipeline’: NYC cops. New York Post. June 22, 2026.)

fully automatic Uzi

basket case

By the end of the summer, the UK will be on to its seventh prime minister in 10 years. There was a time when we used to make fun of the Italians for replacing their leaders every couple of years or so. Now they look like the model of stability. It is us who is the basket case.
(John Crace. The business secretary knows about jobs, and seems pretty sure Keir is out of one. The Guardian. June 21, 2026.)

It is us who is the basket case.

smell the reality

Vance, asked at a White House news briefing about a report that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was fuming over the agreement, said he had not heard such comments from Netanyahu but criticised members of the Israeli leader’s cabinet, who he said have attacked the deal and personally attacked Trump.

“My message to them would be twofold. No 1: Donald J Trump is the only head of state in the entire world ‌who is sympathetic to the nation of Israel at this ‌moment in time,” Vance told reporters.

“If I was in the cabinet of the Israeli government, I might not be attacking the only powerful ally that I have anywhere left ‌in the entire world.“

“The problem for Israel is not Donald J Trump, and anybody in Israel who thinks their biggest problem is the president of the United States needs to wake up and smell the reality of the situation that country is in,” Vance said.
(JD Vance tells Iran deal critics in Israel: Trump is your only ally left in the world. The Guardian. June 19, 2026.)

smell the reality

US workers need to wake up and smell the reality!
(2012)

People who claim that only "the lazy people" will go bankrupt over medical bills need to wake up and smell the reality.
(2012)

wake up and smell the reality

wake up and smell the coffee

If you tell someone to wake up and smell the coffee, you are telling them to be more realistic and more aware of what is happening around them. This expression is used mainly in American English.

Memorundum of Understanding

Memorandum of Understanding

The United States on Wednesday released the official text of the memorandum of understanding reached over the weekend with Iran.

A senior US administration official read out the 14-point document, which spells out provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing certain financial restrictions on Iran and sets out expectations for addressing Iran’s nuclear program during future technical talks.

Titled the “Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the document was released after outcry that its text hadn’t been released publicly.
(US releases official agreement with Iran. Read the 14-point text. CNN. June 17, 2026.)

A short document outlining the terms of an agreement, especially as a draft leading to a formal, detailed contract: a memorandum of understanding.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

13 — After signing this MOU, and subject to the beginning of the implementation of paragraphs 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11 of this MOU, and the continuing implementation of these measures, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will start negotiations regarding the final deal exclusively on the other paragraphs.
(ibid.)

narc

Vance repeatedly pushed back when the co-hosts pointed out Trump’s past ties to Epstein. He falsely suggested that the friendship was “back in the 1980s,” when in fact the close relationship was documented throughout the 1990s.

According to an FBI document, Trump called the Palm Beach Police Department when the police opened an investigation into Epstein in the mid-2000s and said, “Thank goodness you’re stopping him. Everyone has known he’s been doing this.”

Vance depicted the call this way: Trump “narced on him to the police and led ultimately to Jeffrey Epstein’s downfall.” But an investigation was already underway at the time.
(Brian Stelter. JD Vance confesses to ‘The View’ that he’s an Epstein ‘conspiracy theorist’. CNN. June, 16, 2026.)

Trump “narced on him to the police and led ultimately to Jeffrey Epstein’s downfall.”

"narc(ed)"には、

To act as an informer; snitch
(American Heritage Dictionary)

eventual intent

A woman has died in what appears to be a tragic extreme sports accident in Brazil.

Three men have been arrested over the incident, in which instructors failed to attach a rope to her before helping her jump from a bridge in São Paulo state.

Police are now investigating whether the men are culpable of homicide with eventual intent - when someone does not have the direct intention but assumes the risk of killing - local news site Globo reports.
(Olivia Ireland. Brazil woman dies after rope-jumping instructors fail to attach cord. BBC News. June 16, 2026.)

are culpable of homicide with eventual intent - when someone does not have the direct intention but assumes the risk of killing -

call time on

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to ban under-16s from major social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

The government will also stop children being able to livestream on "safer" sites, and stop them being able to talk to strangers on gaming apps.

Ministers are considering whether to impose social media curfews for children, but further details will not be unveiled until next month.

"This is a choice about whose side we're on: families across the country, or a status quo that isn't working," Sir Keir said.

He would, he said, "call time on a system that's failing our kids".
(Starmer set to ban under-16s from major social media platforms. BBC News. June 14, 2026.)

call time on a system that's failing our kids

put an end to something
(Collins Dictionary)

fugazi

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nabbed hundreds of knockoff watches, glasses and headwear in Ohio last week.

Gold and silver watches and hats bearing the distinctive-looking Coach and Gucci patterns were among the 111 items seized from parcels entering the US at the Port of Cincinnati.

Most counterfeit goods are sold online, with over 90% of all seizures taking place in international mail environments. The rise in encrypted messaging apps like WhatsApp or Telegram have increased sales, allowing fugazi items to be shipped straight to people’s doors.
(Emily Goodin. Border agents seize dozens of counterfeit watches, sunglasses — potentially worth up to $20M. New York Post. June 11, 2026.)

fugazi

fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in (a body bag)

string along

Elsewhere during his CBS Sunday Morning interview, Vance was asked if Iran was “stringing President Trump along,” knowing that the unpopular war and the high gas prices it has caused will be politically damaging for him and the GOP in the midterms.

“No, I don’t think so. Again, I think their system takes a long time to reach consensus,” Vance said.
(Ewan Palmer. JD Vance Makes Embarrassing Confession About Trump’s Failed War Boast. Daily Beast. June 10, 2026.)

Iran was “stringing President Trump along

string along
Informal
1. To go along with something; agree.
2. To keep (someone) waiting or in a state of uncertainty.
3. To fool, cheat, or deceive.

cuckooing

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people's homes are being taken over by criminals every week in the UK, usually to store and deal drugs, police chiefs have told the BBC.

Perpetrators of so-called cuckooing often target vulnerable people, including the elderly or disabled, by forcing themselves into homes to carry out illegal acts.
('I was a prisoner in my home': Drug gangs 'cuckooing' hundreds of homes a week, police warn. BBC News. June 9, 2026.)

Cuckooing - named after cuckoos, who frequently take over other birds' nests to lay their own eggs - is expected to become a specific criminal offence by the end of the year, carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence.
(ibid.)

The city is warning tourists set to attend hot local summer events such as the World Cup and America250 to keep their eyes open for scammers — who are already in full swing prepping for the onslaught.

Investigators have already uncovered more than a few tourist-baiting scams, including some involving tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon and delivering far less and pedicab drivers ripping off customers, the pols said.

tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon

frail

frail

Millions of sick Americans could have a tougher time retaining — or even signing up for — Medicaid coverage after the first-ever federal work requirement begins in January in most states.

That’s because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services issued a new rule this week that takes a harder line on defining which low-income adult enrollees are eligible for an exemption for those who are “medically frail.” The rule guides states on implementing the work mandate.

To qualify for the exemption, not only must enrollees have an illness or medical condition, such as cancer or a behavioral health issue, but that condition must also significantly impair their ability to comply with the work mandate, according to the rule, released Monday.
(Tami Luhby. The Trump administration makes it harder for some sick Americans to maintain Medicaid. CNN. June 7, 2026.)

butt heads

The Alabama family had been traveling in Japan for a week by then. But travel frictions arose: Weston, a passionate naturalist, had butted heads with his mother over her use of ChatGPT – and the natural resources such AI requires – to navigate their journey.

Weston… had butted heads with his mother over…

simple as pimple

After several artists dropped out of a Washington, D.C., concert series organized by Freedom 250, rapper Vanilla Ice said he will still be on the bill, telling CBS News on Monday he would perform for anyone, including Russian President Vladimir Putin or Iran.

The rapper, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, told CBS News, "It's simple as a pimple for me, there's nothing to it. It's the birthday of America."

"Two hundred and fifty years. It's not anything to do with politics. I don't know why they're turning it into politics," Van Winkle said, adding he's "never voted in my life."
(Jordan Freiman. After several artists drop out of Freedom 250 concerts, Vanilla Ice says he'd "play for anybody" including Putin and Iran. CBS News. June 1, 2026.)

It's simple as a pimple for me

lay into

Sen. John Fetterman issued a scathing takedown of Graham Platner as the leading Democratic candidate in Maine’s Senate race has become embroiled in a scandal over reports that he sent sexual text messages to women who were not his wife.

In an interview with CNN Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Democrat also laid into Platner over past social media posts that have haunted Platner’s campaign for months. Fetterman likened Platner to a “Nazi sympathizer” over a now-infamous tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Platner has apologized for the past posts and has pleaded ignorance over the meaning of the tattoo, which he has since covered.
(Fetterman calls Platner a ‘creep’ after reports of extramarital sexting. CNN. June 2, 2026.)

upbraid

President Trump reportedly took Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to task during a Monday phone call over the latter’s military campaign in Lebanon.

Axios reported, citing two U.S. officials and a third source briefed on the call, that Trump called Netanyahu “crazy” and accused him of ingratitude.

At one point, Trump reportedly yelled at Netanyahu, “What the f— are you doing?”
(Max Rego. Report: Trump upbraids Netanyahu over Lebanon, asking, ‘What the f— are you doing?’ The Hill. June 1, 2026.)

Trump upbraids Netanyahu over Lebanon

pancreas

A daily pill can double survival time in patients with the world’s deadliest cancer, according to the results of a clinical trial that experts are saying is a “gamechanger” and one of the biggest breakthroughs in decades.

Currently, there are few treatments for pancreatic cancer, and most do little or nothing to help. For decades, scientists have worked relentlessly trying to find clever solutions for a form of cancer that is often found late. More than half of patients are only diagnosed after it has spread.

Now experts at the world’s largest cancer conference are hailing the arrival of a smart drug called daraxonrasib, which they say could pave the way for a treatment revolution.
(Andrew Gregory. Daily pill can double survival time for world’s deadliest cancer, trial shows. The Guardian. May 31, 2026.)

pancreas

pachyderm

Happy, an elephant that became embroiled in a high-profile court case over whether she had the legal rights of a person, has died after being euthanized at New York City’s Bronx zoo at the age of 55.

The Asian elephant, was euthanized on Tuesday after zoo staff determined that “progressive, age-related health conditions” required the decision, according to the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs four zoos and an aquarium in New York.

Unusually for a pachyderm, Happy has two separate claims to fame. In 2005, the elephant was part of a groundbreaking study that showed that elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror – a sign of self-awareness so far understood to be shared only with a few other non-human species, such as chimpanzees and orcas.
(Oliver Milman. Happy the elephant dies aged 55 after being euthanized at New York zoo. The Guardian. May 28, 2026.)

dip into saving

An increasing number of American households have struggled to afford enough food since 2020 because of rising economic strains, according to an analysis released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York on Wednesday.

“We find a remarkable increase in food insecurity, particularly among lower-educated and lower-income households and households with young children,” the economists wrote.

The report, which was based on the results of the New York Fed’s monthly survey of consumer expectations, found a significant increase in people who said they dipped into their savings from June 2020 to February 2026. This margin was even more pronounced for nonwhite households or those with children.
(Sarah Davis. Food insecurity increase for many Americans ‘remarkable’: NY Fed. The Hill. May 27, 2026.)

a significant increase in people who said they dipped into their savings
