laissez-faire

今日の1語は"laissez-faire"という表現で、これはフランス語です。自由放任主義とか無干渉（主義）と訳されます。主に、政府が自国内の営利企業等に対して、その活動に干渉しないという政策を言います。要は競争原理に基づいて栄える企業、廃れる企業、なるがままに任せるということです。（laissezは英語のlet、faireはdoに相当。）

米格安航空会社のスピリット航空が経営危機と報じられています。イラン戦争の影響で原油価格が急上昇していることなどが追い打ちをかけ、このままではキャッシュも尽きるというところまで追い込まれているとのことですが、トランプ大統領は同社に対する支援策の検討を指示しているとのことです。

500億ドルという巨額の資金援助、またアメリカ政府が同社へ出資して政府管理下に置く、すなわち国有化という案もあるそうで、これは自由主義経済というよりも社会主義経済を彷彿とさせる動きです。

共和党内からはトランプ氏意向に異を唱える議員も出ており、党としての"laissez-faire"アプローチが試されていると記事にあります。

トランプ氏は何故スピリット航空への支援に前のめりなのか？

同航空がイラン戦争の煽りで危機的状況にあることは明らかですが、自身が始めた戦争でアメリカの企業が潰れたなどという汚点を残したくないという思いが強いのだろうと見られています。

イランへの軍事攻撃が始まって以降、ホルムズ海峡封鎖を始めとする中東情勢の不安定化により原油価格が上昇しています。1ガロンあたりの価格は4ドルを超えたと報じられており、BBCニュースの報道によれば、これは2022年8月以来だということです。（尤も、リッター当たりでは150〜160円となり、日本のガソリン価格と同じレベルで、アメリカではガソリンは元々安いと言われます。）

日本国内は備蓄放出により比較的安定していますが、アメリカ国内では高止まりしており、国民の不満も高まっていると報じられています。

引用する記事では、民主党がガソリン価格の上昇を選挙の争点にしているという話です。

引き合いに出されているのは、ミシガン州の議席。2024年には現職の共和党議員がガソリン価格を争点に議席を得ましたが、イラン情勢の影響でガソリン価格は当時と同じくらいに高騰、野党民主党候補が逆に共和党を追い詰めるという状況が生じている、ということです。

すなわち、形勢逆転、立場が入れ替わった、といったところです。

Tom Barrett tapped into voter frustration over high gas prices as part of his successful 2024 run for Congress in Michigan. Now the Republican is on the defensive on that same issue as Democrats see an opportunity to flip his seat.

とあります。「テーブルが入れ替わった」とあるこの「テーブル」はバックギャモンというゲームのテーブルを指すそうで、対局者の位置を逆にすることから来ているそうです。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsには"Turn the tables"という慣用句として以下のような説明があります。

If you turn the tables on someone, you do something to change a situation so that you gain an advantage over them or cause them problems, after a time when they have had the advantages or have been causing problems for you.

この慣用句は"tables turn"、"turn the tables"と「テーブル」（tables）は複数形であるという点が重要です。

バックギャモンで使うボード（テーブル）は折り畳みできるものになっており、2つある各々を"table"と呼ぶそうです。この2つのテーブルを挟んで向かい合うプレーヤーがバックギャモンをプレイするのですが、西洋双六と呼ばれるこのゲームで対局位置が入れ替わることを指して"tables turn"というようです。

昨日はアメリカでのデータセンター建設事情の記事を取り上げましたが、今日も同じ話題で別記事からの引用です。

AI（人工知能）需要の高まりに伴ってデータセンターの建設が全米で相次いでいるということですが、建設地となる地域の住民には評判が悪い、という話です。以下、引用をどうぞ。

アメリカではデータセンター建設是非は自治体議員の選挙の争点ともなっているそうです。データセンター建設による地域への影響が、

となっていることを反映したものだといいます。

この"kitchen table issue"という表現を取り上げます。

"kitchen"（キッチン）は台所と解釈するのが適当でしょうか。もしくは、"kitchen table"とは家族が食事をする場所と捉えることもできます。

家族が食事をする際に話題に上るような問題、モノやサービスの値段（が上がった）とか質（が下がった）とか、そういった日常的、卑近な話題を指すということだと思われます。

"kitchen table issue"という表現はよく使われるようで、コーパスからいくつか用例を拾ってみました。

NIMBY

AI（人工知能）ブームを受けて、大規模データセンター建設の需要が高まっています。小生が住む郊外地域のとある自治体はデータセンター建設の好立地らしく、大手企業のデータセンターが次々と建設されていると聞きます。

以下に引用するのはアメリカ国内の事情に関する記事です。アメリカでもやはりデータセンター建設ラッシュだそうですが、建設に反対する意見も多く、住民と企業の対立構図を産んでいるそうです。データセンター運営には大量の水や電気が必要で、生活環境やインフラコストに及ぼす悪影響や、住環境の悪化などへの懸念が背景にあると言われています。

The national fight against data centers recently came to my neighborhood. Like dandelions in the spring, signs proclaiming opposition to a massive development that includes a $10 billion Meta data center have popped up in my neighbors’ lawns. 

My neighbors’ protest is focused on plans to pump as much as 25 million gallons of water a day out of a reservoir that serves as a main source of drinking water for Indianapolis and its suburbs, largely to serve the business interests of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and friends.

少し調べてみたところ、日本国内でもデータセンター建設に反対する事案があるようです。自分事として考えるならば、やはり隣地や近所に巨大なデータセンターができたらあまり心地良い気持ちはしないかな・・・。

一方でアメリカにおけるデータセンター建設反対の対立はかなり激しいものがあるようです。

インディアナ州では建設推進派の議員宅に銃弾が撃ち込まれたとか。

A recent report by Data Center Watch found that residents and activists in multiple states were successful in delaying or stopping data center projects worth a combined $64 billion between May 2024 and March 2025. 

But thousands of other data centers have been built or are planned across the United States.

In Indianapolis, protests against a planned data center took a dangerous turn when shots were fired on April 6 at the home of a city-county council member who voted in favor of the project. Thankfully, the great majority of NIMBY (not in my backyard) activism is peaceful.

Although I am generally a YIMBY – economic growth is an essential tool for improving our quality of life – I do pause when it comes to data centers.

My hesitancy about the projects hinges less on concerns about water and electricity and more on the lack of long-term return on investment for communities.

今日の1語は、

NIMBY

で、これは"not in my backyard"の頭文字を取ったものです。公共の施設、設備など、インフラ上重要で欠かせないものがあります。例えば、ゴミ処理施設なんかがそうですが、自宅の近く（裏庭）には作って欲しくは無い、というややエゴイスティックな態度であります。必要なのは分かるけど、他所でやってくれ、ということですね。小生の近所で葬祭場の建設計画があるようなのですが、建設予定地の近隣住民が建設反対の幟を立てているのを見ます。これなんかもNIMBYですね。

記事では、YIMBYという略語も出てきます。こちらは知りませんでしたが、大規模な工場や設備の誘致が地元経済を潤すという期待感から、そうした施設の建設に肯定的な態度であることを言うようです。

cut bait

二期目のトランプ大統領の言動は全世界を混乱させていると言っても異を唱える人は少ないのではないでしょうか。特にイラン攻撃を巡っては、その文明を壊滅させ、石器時代に戻すと発言したり、戦争犯罪にも問われかねない民間施設への攻撃姿勢などが取り沙汰され、果たして大統領は正気なのか？とすら言われています。

そうした疑問は以前であれば野党民主党から呈されていたものですが、今日に至っては身内であり共和党やMAGAと呼ばれる支持者層からも上がっているというのが現実のようです。

現実にトランプ氏の支持率は低下しており、今年行われる予定の中間選挙にもたらす影響が懸念されています。共和党議員らにしてみれば、共和党への支持者離れが加速すれば戦えない、という切実な問題と思われます。記事では、

GOP incumbents running for reelection need to "cut the bait" on the president before the 2026 midterm elections

というくだりがあります。

ここで使われている、"cut the bait"とはどういう意味なのでしょうか？

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsには、

fish or cut bait

という表現が載っており、次のように定義されています。

You can tell someone to fish or cut bait when you want them to stop wasting time and make a decision to do something.

アメリカ英語の表現だとあります。魚を釣るか、餌を切る、というのが字句通りの訳となりますが、上記の説明からすると、2つある行動から1つに決定すべし、ということのようです。コンテクストに当てはめると、どうなるでしょうか？

トランプ政権支持で大統領の予測不能な言動に振り回され、果ては議席を失うか、あるいはトランプ氏不支持に回り、何とか中間選挙を乗り越えるか、そんな風に解釈することができそうです。

実のところ、この"fish or cut bait"という表現の由来には諸説あるらしく、コンテクストによってその意味するところや解釈にもバリエーションがあるようです。

小生のイメージでは、"cut bait"は釣り糸の（針の）先に付けた餌を切る、つまり魚を釣ることを止める、という風に思えます。つまり、"fish or cut bait"は、釣りを続けるか、（釣れないので）思い切ってやめるか、といい2つの選択肢を示している、という解釈です。そうすると、引用した記事のコンテクストとしては、トランプ政権を支持し続けるか、それもとトランプ氏を「見切って」支持をやめるか（反トランプの姿勢を鮮明にするか）、という解釈ができそうです。

しかし、この"fish or cut bait"というフレーズにおける"cut bait"とは、そもそもは釣り餌を切るという準備作業（針先に付けるために餌を細かく刻んでおくということと思われます）という意味合いであって、釣り、漁業という営みにおいて、「魚を釣る」、もしくは（そのために）「餌の準備をする」というどちらも必要な行動のいずれかの役割を担う、つまりそれ以外の役に立たないことはせず、目的達成のために必要な協力、貢献をする、という意味合いで使われたものだったようです。（Wikipedia、Phrase Finderの解説による。）

ところで、研究社新英和大辞典では、"fish or cut bait"というフレーズを米口語として、

（やるのかやらないのか）二つのうちのどちらかに決める、去就をはっきりさせる

と定義しています。（ランダムハウス英和辞書にも「去就を明らかにする」という定義が見えます。）

とすると、2つの英和辞書は"cut bait"の意味合いとして、釣りをやめる、という解釈で一致していると考えられます。

元々、"fish or cut bait"というフレーズから始まったこの慣用表現は、"cut bait"という部分の解釈の仕方に多少の余地があったことから、使われるコンテクストも様々なものとなり、「やるかやらないか」という選択肢において「やらない」という選択肢を選ぶことを意味して、"cut bait"という部分だけが単独で使われるようになったものと思われます。

cut his blanks off

3日連続で同じ話題となり恐縮です。本日もセクハラ疑惑により辞職した米下院議員（民主党）の関連ニュースからの引用です。

昨日の投稿では元議員が「女たらし」との噂が絶えなかったとの記事を取り上げました。こうした背景の中、元議員の不適切な行動を糺すことは出来なかったのか、民主党内に自浄作用は無かったのか、というような疑問が提起されています。

元議員を知る同僚議員や民主党内からは一連の疑惑について、決して許容されるものではないとの声が上がっています。

Lawmakers from both parties expressed disgust and alarm that Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., has been able to hold elected office for 16 years, build a national profile — even mount a front-running gubernatorial campaign — all the while masking the alleged sexual misconduct that forced him from office earlier this week.

To Rep. Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., future instances of misconduct might be prevented by a greater culture of transparency between offices.

上記の引用部分では、民主党のDebbie Dingell議員のコメントが取り上げられているものですが、セクハラは決して許容されない、こうした不祥事は組織の高い倫理基準を以って防止されなければならない、としています。そして、もしもペロシ氏（民主党の元下院議長）が知っていたら・・・、

she would have cut his 'blanks' off

とコメントした、とあります。

ここで使われている"cut his blanks off"というフレーズの意味するところが分からず、難儀しました。

"blank(s)"は引用符付きになっているのですが、それを"cut off"とはどういう意味なのか、辞書にはそれらしき表現の解説は見当たりません。

「ブランク」（blank）ですから空白ですね。スラングの類いにも思われたのですが、手元にある英和辞書、英語辞書にも手掛かりが無く・・・。

Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismを見てみると、"blank"には殺す（kill）の意味があるとあり、ハッとしました。解説には、

From the void into which the victim is sent.

とあります。なるほど、"void"、イコール、"blank"であり、繋がります。が、"blank(s)"は名詞として、"cut off"の目的語になっていることから、少し違うのではとも思われます。

ところで他のメディアの報道も見ていますと、以下のような見出しが目に留まりました。

Pelosi would have ‘decimated’ Swalwell if she knew of sexual misconduct allegations: House Democrat

これを見ると、"cut his blanks off"は"decimate"と同義であると解釈できます。

"blank"の意味には射撃の的（bull’s eye）の意味があります。正確な解釈か分かりませんが、"cut his blanks off"とは的を撃ち抜くこと、すなわち相手を銃で撃って殺すという意味だろうかとも思いました。

ちなみにですが、上記NBCニュースではニュースキャスターとDingell議員とのやり取りの動画があります。視聴したのですが、Dingell議員の発言（17分30秒以降のやり取り）では、

If she had heard it, (she) would have decimated him

となっており、"cut his blanks off"という表現は確認出来ません。Fox Newsの記事ではこの表現を含めて引用符付きになっていますが、果たしてDingell議員の実際の発言なのか疑問です。

womanize

昨日の投稿で、セクハラ疑惑により辞職した米下院議員のニュースを取り上げました。今日も同じ話題で恐縮ですが、関連記事の引用からお読みください。

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Congressman Ro Khanna (D-Santa Clara) says he’s disgusted with the growing allegations against Eric Swalwell. He says his former colleague needs to be held accountable as Swalwell’s seat is now open and the race for governor continues without him.

“I had heard rumors of Swalwell’s womanizing, but I didn’t have any idea he was engaging in his own staff — let alone sexual assault,” said Rep. Khanna.

加州の知事選からも離脱することになった元議員は複数の女性から告発されています。上記の引用で、

I had heard rumors of Swalwell’s womanizing, but I didn’t have any idea he was engaging in his own staff...

とのコメントがあります。元議員を支えるスタッフでもあった女性らに手を出したということです。

"womanizing"という動詞が使われています。American Heritage Dictionaryには"womanizer"という名詞の定義に、

A man who seduces or attempts to seduce women as a matter of habit.

とあります。これはつまり、女たらし、女遊びが過ぎる輩のことです。

元議員については、以前からその女性関係、女性に対する言動などを危惧する声があったといわれていることが明らかになっています。

But when this member had asked about the rumored infidelity — which Democrats on Capitol Hill widely described to CNN as an “open secret” — they were assured by some of Swalwell’s close friends that all the rumors were “just activities before he was married” and encouraged to formally back him in the race. This person was not alone: Other members also directly questioned Swalwell and his team about what would happen if his history of womanizing in Washington came out publicly, only to be brushed off by his team, another person confirmed.

ワシントン界隈では有名な女たらし、というのが、言わば公然の秘密だったそうです。

blather and spin

先日のニュースで、セクハラの告発を受けた米下院議員が辞任を表明したという記事を読みました。議員はカリフォルニア州知事選の有力候補でもありましたが、告発を受けて知事選からは撤退を余儀無くされた格好です。

今日の関連記事では、別の女性からもこの議員による不同意猥褻行為があったとの訴えがなされていると報じられています。当該記事からの引用です。

Another woman has alleged that Eric Swalwell raped her, adding to a growing list of misconduct allegations against the former Democratic lawmaker.

Speaking on Tuesday, Lonna Drewes said she had been reluctant to come forward with her allegations that Swalwell drugged and raped her in a hotel room in 2018 because of his "political power".

新たに被害を名乗り出た女性によれば、議員はワインに薬物を混入し、抵抗出来ない状態の女性に猥褻な行為を働いたとのことです。議員側の弁護士は女性の訴えは虚偽であると否定しているとあります。

これに対し、女性側も弁護士と共に記者会見を開き、真っ向から対立する構図となっています。

At a news conference on Tuesday, Drewes' attorney, Lisa Bloom, dismissed Swalwell's earlier public response to other women's accusations - in which he apologised to his wife while denying the allegations - as "blather and spin".

少々ややこしいのですが、この議員はそもそも悪いことをしたと認めて辞職したはずですが、不同意猥褻などの行為については否定しているということのようです。

女性側は訴えを認めない議員の主張を、

blather and spin

と非難した、とあります。

"blather"はたわごと、無駄話、特に長々と中身のない話しを続けることを指す表現です。"spin"という表現ですが、こちらは話しを紡ぎ出すというような意味合いがありますが、内容を捻って作り出す、即ちでっち上げる（fabricate）、というような含みがあります。

議員は複数の女性から告発を受けて清く辞職したように見えますが、訴えられた猥褻行為自体については認めておらず、また謝罪という点においても被害者である女性に対してではなく、自身の妻や有権者、知事選のサポーターなど身内に対してのみというところに留まっています。

議員のこうした言動が"blather and spin"だという訳です。

この"blather and spin"という言い回しは、同じような意味合いの言葉を重ねる冗語的な表現と捉えることができるように思われます。

特に定着しているということでも無さそうですが、"blather and 〜"のようなパターンの表現はコーパスの検索からも見られます。

先日朝刊を読んでいたら、コンビニのセブンイレブンが苦戦しているという記事がありました。他社コンビニが利益を上げる中、セブンイレブンは減益だということでした。

以下の引用はアメリカのセブンイレブンの話しですが、600を超える大量の店舗をクローズする予定だということです。尤も、これには戦略があるとされ、既存店舗を刷新して、"food forward"の店舗スタイルで新装オープンということのようです。

この"food forward"のスタイルというのは、店舗サービスを食料品などのアイテム中心から、食事の提供へとシフトするという意味だそうです。つまり、単なる小売店から、食事を提供するレストランのような業態へと移行するということです。

米コンビニ業界では目下この"food forward"スタイルが流行りなんだそうです。

以下に引用する記事では、朝食の分野においてコンビニがファーストフードチェーンの売上を奪う傾向も見られるとあります。

Artemis II’s return to terra firma

と表現されている箇所があります。

"terra firma"とはラテン語で、英語に逐語訳すれば"solid land"、（海や空に対しての）大地、陸地の意味であると辞書に載っています。ここでは（宇宙空間に対しての）地球という意味で使われていると思われます。

一方、同じくオリオンの帰還を取り上げている別の記事では以下のようなくだりがあります。

If all goes according to plan, the spacecraft will splash down at 8:07 p.m. EDT (0007 GMT on April 11) in the Pacific Ocean, not far off the coast of San Diego — the same general area where the uncrewed Artemis 1 moon mission came down in December 2022. と書かれていて、オリオンのカプセルは「陸地」（terra firma）ではなく、海洋に着水、とあります。

"terra"というラテン語は語源的には、乾いた（dry）、という意味があるそうです。従って、海洋の"wet"に対して、"dry"な陸地という対比になります。

余談ですが、古典ラテン語で地球は、

orbis terrarum（もしくは、orbis terrae）

と言います。

"terra firma"という表現はルネッサンス以降において科学や哲学などの学術分野で使われるようになった新ラテン語（近代ラテン語）の表現とされます。

妻に対する殺人未遂の罪で医師の夫に有罪判決、というニュース記事を読みました。

ハワイのマウイ島でハイキング中に崖から突き落とそうとしたとあります。

A doctor in Maui, Hawaii, was found guilty of attempted manslaughter on Wednesday for trying to kill his wife during a hike on her birthday last year.

After the jury deliberated for more than eight hours, they spared Gerhardt Konig, 47, of the more serious charge of attempted murder.

2人仲良くハイキング、それも妻の誕生日のお祝いで、という時にどういう訳で殺意が湧いたのか？記事を読み進めますと、妻が浮気しているらしいという疑惑から夫婦仲に問題があったらしいことが分かります。

Arielle Konig said they had gone to Oahu to celebrate her birthday and had been working on their marriage after her husband found flirty messages she had exchanged with a coworker.

浮気が事実か否かについてはあまり詳細が触れられていません。上に引用したくだりで、

(they) had been working on their marriage

という箇所に目が留まりました。

言うまでもなく"they"は当事者夫婦を指していますが、"work on their marriage"とはどういう意味だろうと少し考えた次第です。そもそもマリッジ（marriage）、ここでは結婚生活という意味だと思いますが、それを"work on"するとはどういう意味なのか？

"work on their marriage"は、夫が妻の不貞を疑い始めて以降のことであるということから、夫婦の間には不和があった状況だと推察されます。してみると、"work on their marriage"とはそのような不和を解消すべく関係修復の過程、あるいはいわゆる夫婦間の「すれ違い」を改善するための試みがなされていた、という意味合いであろうと思われます。

ここまで書いてみると特にどうということもない話のようにも思うのですが、"work on their marriage"とという表現を初めて目にし、また"marriage"が"work (on)"という動詞の目的語になるというのはちょっと意外でした。

"work on their marriage"という表現は多数の用例を確認することができ、英語では定着した表現のようです。

My husband recently ended an affair with a female coworker. We decided to stay together and work on our marriage. However, he and his coworker are still friends. I am troubled by this. What should I do?

折しも、夫婦間の危機（！？）みたいなものは小生も25年以上になる結婚生活の中で感じない訳ではありません。結婚生活というものは夫婦で"work on"しなければならないものなんだ！と納得したり。

以下の用例など、考えさせられます。燃えるような恋愛を経て結婚した人も、そうでない人も、"marriage"はゴールではなくて、その後ウン10年にも渡って"work on"しなければならないものなんだと。

昨日の投稿では月周回中のロケットからの撮影にニコン製のカメラが使われているという記事を取り上げました。

早くも地球への帰還の航路に入るロケット「オリオン」の乗員は月の裏側から見た地球の映像を撮影し、NASAが公開しています。

宇宙から地球の姿を見た人は価値観が変わるような強い感銘を受けるそうです。我々はNASAが公開する映像で擬似体験することしか出来ませんけれども、それでも青い地球の姿は強い印象に残ります。

宇宙から見た地球 — その際にもたらされる心理効果を、

overview effect

と呼ぶそうです。

この"overview effect"という言葉は1987年に作家で哲学者のFrank White氏が提唱したものだということです。日本語では、オーバービュー効果とか概観効果などと訳されているようです。

宇宙から見る地球には国境など無く、大気圏に包まれた美しく青い、一つの球体に我々人類が生を営んでいるという事実だけです。政治や宗教、人種の違いも、憎しみや争いも超越した視点で地球を眺めることになります。

アルテミス計画による月周回飛行のミッションが進行中です。人類として初めて月の向こう側に到達、世界が初めて見ることになる映像が届けられています。

その撮影にはニコン製のカメラが使われているそうです。日本のメーカーということで誇らしいですね。

ニコンのカメラが選ばれたのは、

としての実績だそうです。

"workhorse"（workforceでは無い）という表現が使われているのですが、その意味は、

something that is markedly useful, durable, or dependable

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Something, such as a machine, that performs dependably under heavy or prolonged use

というもので、苛酷な条件下でも使用に耐え得るという意味です。

knock 〜 out for a loop

イランに対する停戦交渉の期限を再度延期しているトランプ大統領ですが、最新の情報ではその期限を米国東部時間4月7日午後8時に置いたと報じられています。それまでにホルムズ海峡封鎖解除を含む交渉内容に合意しなければ、一夜にしてイランという国が滅ぶ可能性があると発言したと報じられています。

トランプ大統領の発言が引用されていますが、その中に、

We can knock them out for a loop.

というくだりがあります。ここで使われているのは"knock (someone) (out) for a loop"という俗語表現です。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

Slang

To surprise tremendously; astonish.

と載っており、（相手を）ひどく驚かす、驚愕させる、というような意味となっています。一方、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のような3つの意味合いがあげられており、

overcome

demolish

dumbfound, amaze

驚愕させるという意味に加えて、叩きのめす、完全に破壊する（demolish）という意味があることがわかります。

よく分からないのは、"〜for a loop"とある部分の"loop"の解釈ではないでしょうか。

実のところ、当ブログで以前、

thrown for a loop

という表現を取り上げたことがあります。Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、throw 〜 for a loop、knock 〜 for a loopをひとまとめに載せており、その解説では意味するところはやはりびっくりさせるというものです。このフレーズには相手を驚愕させる出来事が唐突であるが故にに、それが非常に衝撃的である、また相手を困惑させる程であるという意味合いがあるようです。

そうしてみると、"loop"の解釈としては"loopy"という表現に見られる阿呆、頭がおかしい、という意味合いに関連しているように思われます。すなわち、出来事のショックが相手を呆けさせるくらいに強烈であることを言っていると解釈できるかと。

徹底的に破壊するという意味合いに関しても同様で、やられた方が呆気にとられるくらいにこてんぱんにするというある種の誇張表現にも思われます。

rock-for-brains

記事の引用からどうぞ。

盗品をネットで売ろうとした男が逮捕されたというニュースです。盗品だとすぐ分かるようなものを売ろうとすれば足がつくのは分かりきったことだとすれば、そのアホさ加減が分かるというものです。

引用記事の冒頭、

rock-for-brains

という表現を取り上げます。辞書には載っていないようです。記事のタイトルには、

rock-headed

ともあります。恐らく同じ意味合いだと思われます。

英和辞典には、

have rocks in one's head

というフレーズが載っていて、「頭がどうかしている、ばかだ」という意味の米俗語表現だとあります。

"rock-for-brains"に関しては、脳ミソの代わりに石コロ（rocks）が詰まっている、ということだと思います。

日本語で石頭（いしあたま）というと頑固で融通のきかない人のことを指しますが、英語では頭の中に石が詰まっているのは愚鈍だということです。

Kegel

今日の話題は一応、成人向けの内容となります。悪しからず。

いわゆる男性機能の話しになるのですが、肝心の時に機能しない（?!）という場合に備えて骨盤トレーニングが有効だという話がネットで広まっているそうです。

骨盤トレーニングという言葉を聞かれたことがあるかも知れません。記事中は"pelvic floor exercise"と出て来ます。出産を経験した女性などが尿漏れなどになりやすいところ、この骨盤トレーニングが有効とされます。

記事ではもう一つ、"Kegel(s)"という言葉も出て来ますがこれも骨盤トレーニングを指す用語です。"Kegel"は骨盤トレーニングの始祖である産科医Arnold H. Kegel (1894-1941) に因みます。

Any of various exercises involving controlled contraction and release of the muscles at the base of the pelvis, used especially as a treatment for urinary incontinence.

ところで"Kegel"が男性機能の維持や回復に本当に有用なのか？については記事においては、注意が必要とあります。"Kegel"は排尿などをコントロールする括約筋を鍛えますが、男性機能の問題に関しては括約筋が緊張していることが機能低下の原因にあるそうで、エクササイズは状況をより悪くする可能性があるとのことです。

lunar flyby

NASA のアルテミス2計画のロケットが月に向けて打ち上げられたとのニュース速報を今朝のラジオで耳にしました。

4人の宇宙飛行士が搭乗したロケットは米国東部時間午後6時35分にフロリダ州のケネディ宇宙センターから打ち上げられました。

宇宙のことについては疎いのですが、アルテミス計画については度々聞くことがありましたので何となく知ったつもりでおりました。そして引き合いによく出されるのがアポロ計画で、これは人類が初めて月面着陸を果たした歴史的な出来事ですが、今回も月に向けて打ち上げられたということで、また月面に着陸する話か、くらいに思っていたというところです。

ところが記事では、

Artemis II's planned crewed lunar flyby is set to mark the closest humanity has come to the Moon since the Apollo days.

とあります。着陸はしないのか？と自身の不明を恥じたような次第です。

ここで、"flyby"とは、

A flight passing close to a specified target or position, especially a maneuver in which a spacecraft or satellite passes sufficiently close to a body to make detailed observations without orbiting or landing.

と定義される用語であり、天体接近飛行と訳されます。国内メディアでは"crewed lunar flyby"を「有人月周回」と訳しています。

記事にもありますように、今回のアルテミス2計画は続くアルテミス3、アルテミス4という計画の前段階の「リハーサル」的な位置付けであり、月面着陸は2028年のアルテミス4で予定されているそうです。

steward

トランプ氏肝煎りのホワイトハウスのリノベーションに待ったがかかりました。

4億ドルという巨額の予算が計上されている宴会場の建設に関して議会の承認を得ていないとして、差し止めの司法判断が下されたとあります。

A federal judge on Tuesday blocked President Donald Trump from moving ahead with any further work on a massive new $400 million ballroom on the former site of the White House East Wing.

“The President of the United States is the steward of the White House for future generations of First Families. He is not, however, the owner!” Judge Richard Leon wrote.

司法のコメントが引用されていますが、アメリカ大統領はホワイトハウスのオーナー（owner）なのではなく、"steward"である、としています。ということで、今日の1語は"steward"としました。

「スチュワード」（steward）と聞いてまず思い浮かべるのは（飛行機の）スチュワーデスではないでしょうか。女性客室乗務員を指す言葉ですが、"steward"の女性形であるというのはご存知でしょう。最近はスチュワーデスとはあまり言わず、また男性・女性の区別をしない、もっぱら"flight attendant"や"cabin attendant"と表現する傾向にあるようですが。

さて、"steward"のそもそもの意味は、財産管理人や執事というもので、特に大きな家で複数の使用人を指揮して家事家政を仕切る立場の役割を指します。記事では「オーナー」との対比として"steward"という言葉が持ち出されている訳ですが、"steward"は「オーナー」の命を受けて財産を管理するのが役割であり、勝手に何でも決めて実行することは許されない、と言っていると解釈できます。トランプ氏は宴会場建設のために既にホワイトハウスの東ウィングを解体してしまいましたが、議会の承認を得ていない解体、建設計画は"steward"の裁量を越えている、という訳です。

ところで"steward"の語源に目を向けてみると、古英語stigweard、stiwardという語に遡るとあり、これはsti-と-wardという部分に分けられるとあります。-wardは監督、保護を意味するものですが、sti-に関しては"sty"、つまり家畜小屋と同語源なのだそうです。

家畜小屋の管理人と大邸宅の執事とは随分と落差がありますね。

尤も、Online Etymology Dictionaryによれば、英語辞書の総本山ともいうべきOEDでは、"steward"の原義が家畜小屋の管理人というエビデンスは無い、としているそうです。ランダムハウス英和辞書も語源欄では"sty"に触れていますが、意味的な結び付きについては不明としています。
