大方の報道で予想されていたように、イギリスのスターマー首相が辞任を表明しました。

Financial Timesのオピニオン記事から引用です。

The ritual of the UK prime ministerial resignation is now all too familiar: the lectern in Downing Street, the premier blinking in the daylight; the catch in the voice as they finish their statement. That Sir Keir Starmer is the fifth British leader to have stood down midterm since the Brexit vote 10 years ago displays how deeply the country has fallen into a damaging habit that it badly needs to break. The effort to do so now shifts to the man set to succeed Starmer: Andy Burnham.

A root cause of the leadership carousel is the stagnation in living standards and deterioration of public services since the 2008 financial crisis, exacerbated by Brexit and the Covid pandemic. Recently it has often stemmed from party members electing leaders based more on their grassroots appeal than their likely capabilities in office.

辞任予想の記事は先日の投稿で取り上げましたが、スターマー首相の辞任に伴い、イギリスの宰相は10年で7人目ということで、政権トップがコロコロ変わる笑えない状況だと書きました。

それで思い出したのですが、かつての我が国も"revolving door"と揶揄された時期がありました。16年前の話です。

この"revolving door"が上記引用記事のタイトルにも出てくるので思い出したというところですが、本文中には、

leadership carousel

という、また別の表現が使われています。"carousel"とは遊園地のメリーゴーランドや空港に見られる回転式の手荷物コンベアーのことです。回転扉（"revolving door"）の揶揄に同じく、リーダーがコロコロと変わる状況を言っていると解釈できますが、辞書にみる"carousel"の定義にはそのような意味合いは載せていないようです。"revolving door"には、いわゆるメンバーなどの頻繁な入れ替わりを指す表現として辞書にも載っているのですが。

コーパスで検索してみると、"leadership carousel"のような言い回し、つまり頻繁に変わり安定しない様子を言う表現は他に、

managerial carousel

carousel of ~ changes

といったものが見られます。メリーゴーランドを見ていると色んな乗り物がぐるぐると回転して見えてきますが、それが人の頻繁な入れ替わりを想起させるということなんでしょうね。

コーパスで"carousel"の用例を眺めていますと、例えば、

carousel of failure

carousel of chaos and crisis

carousel of scandals

といったように、望ましくない事が次から次へと生じるというような意味合いで使われているものが見られます。

一国のリーダーの交代というのも決して評判の良いものではない訳で・・・。

上述した、10年で7人目（の新首相が誕生）、とは2016年に辞任したキャメロン首相から数えての話で、引用記事ではブレクジットの国民投票が行われたメイ首相以降、任期途中での辞任ということではスターマー首相は5人目、ということで少々ややこしいですが。

Uzi

ニューヨークで違法銃器の摘発があったというニュース記事からの引用です。

A father-son duo peddled illegal guns ranging from a lilac-colored revolver to fully automatic Uzi through an illicit “Iron Pipeline” from Georgia to New York City, authorities said Monday.

The high-powered weaponry — which also included three “switches” that can turn a semi-auto handgun into a “fully operational machine pistol” — was seized in a sting, according to NYPD officials.

囮（おとり）捜査による摘発だったようですが、押収された銃器には回転式拳銃（revolver）の他、

fully automatic Uzi

という記載があります。

この"Uzi"というのは「ウージー式短機関銃」というマシンガンのことだそうで、手元にある英和辞典にも載っています。

そしてその名前は、イスラエルの陸軍士官で、この機関銃の設計者でもあるUziel Galの名前に因むとの語源解説が添えられています。

basket case

イギリスのスターマー首相がいよいよ今週中にも辞任を表明すると報じられています。

以前から支持率低迷により内外の辞任圧力が高まっているということでしたが、直近の補欠選挙で労働党候補が破れたことを受けて進退極まったようです。

ガーディアン紙のオピニオン記事を読むと、スターマー首相辞任となると、イギリスの首相は10年で7人目ということになるようです。

By the end of the summer, the UK will be on to its seventh prime minister in 10 years. There was a time when we used to make fun of the Italians for replacing their leaders every couple of years or so. Now they look like the model of stability. It is us who is the basket case.

かつて日本の首相もコロコロと変わってきましたが、10年で7人は笑えない現実です。英国民の嘆息が聞こえてきそうですが、引用部分で、

It is us who is the basket case.

というくだりがあります。ここで"basket case"とは、

全く無力（無効）な人（もの）

（研究社新英和大辞典）

という意味です。

"basket case"の"basket"（バスケット）からは編みかご、バスケットボールのゴールを思い浮かべますが、この表現は戦争で両手両足を失って自由がきかない状況にある人のこと（a person who is unable to provide for himself — Oxford Dictionary of Euphemisms）を言ったものだそうです。研究社新英和大辞典には「だるま」という日本語も見えます。

smell the reality

既報の通り、アメリカとイランの間で停戦に向けた覚書が合意、署名されました。

最終的な詰めはまだまだこれからというところですが、イスラエルはこの合意に批判的なようです。アメリカと協調してイランへの軍事攻撃に踏み切ったイスラエルですが、停戦交渉の最中にイスラエルがレバノンのヒズボラを攻撃したことにトランプ氏が激怒するなど、両国の関係に亀裂が生じていました。

イスラエルが停戦合意に批判的であるとの報道に対し、ヴァンス副大統領はイスラエルを牽制する発言をしたと封じられています。

Vance, asked at a White House news briefing about a report that Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu was fuming over the agreement, ⁠said he had not heard such comments from Netanyahu but criticised members of the Israeli leader’s cabinet, who he said have attacked the deal and personally attacked Trump.

曰く、アメリカはイスラエルの唯一とも言える強力な同盟国であり、批判は慎んだ方が良い、ということです。

ヴァンス氏の発言の中で、

smell the reality

という表現が出てきます。これは変わった表現だなぁと思いました。というのも"reality"（現実）とは嗅覚で感じる（smell）ものなのだろうか？と思ったからです。日本語だと現実は直視するもので、嗅ぐ対象とはならないように思いますけどね。

一応辞書を引いてみますが、"smell the reality"なる言い回しに何か特別な意味合いがある訳でも無さそうですし、嗅覚で感じる、嗅ぎ取るのは危険（danger）やトラブル（trouble）などで、現実（"reality"）というのはちょっとピンと来ないものが残ります。

しかし、コーパスを検索してみると"smell the reality"という言い回しは無くはないのです。

これらの実例を見ると分かりますが、

wake up and smell the reality

というひとまとまりのフレーズになっています。目を覚まして現実を直視せよ、という意味合いは明らかです。

調べていますと、どうやらこのフレーズの下敷き（？）になっているのは、

wake up and smell the coffee

という慣用表現らしく、その定義はCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsによると以下のようにあります。

If you tell someone to wake up and smell the coffee, you are telling them to be more realistic and more aware of what is happening around them. This expression is used mainly in American English.

起床してコーヒーの香りに寝ぼけ眼を擦りながら目覚ましの一杯、今日も働かなくてはと現実を知る・・・。コーヒーが無いと1日が始まらない、いかにもアメリカらしい表現です。

Memorundum of Understanding

アメリカとイランが戦闘終結でようやく合意に至ったと報じられました。

今朝の報道によれば、両国首脳が覚書に署名したということです。この「覚書」ですが、英語では、

Memorandum of Understanding 

と呼ばれ、MOUと略されます。

当初非公開であったこの覚書の14項目の合意事項は公開され、CNNの記事で全文を読むことができます。

The United States on Wednesday released the official text of the memorandum of understanding reached over the weekend with Iran.

A senior US administration official read out the 14-point document, which spells out provisions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, easing certain financial restrictions on Iran and sets out expectations for addressing Iran’s nuclear program during future technical talks.

両国が戦闘行為を直ちに止めること、ホルムズ海峡の開放、イランの核開発の凍結などが合意されたということになっています。

しかしながら、この「覚書」を意味する"Memorandum of Understanding"の"memorundum"は法律用語で、

A short document outlining the terms of an agreement, especially as a draft leading to a formal, detailed contract: a memorandum of understanding.

と定義されており、正式、公式の契約合意に先立つ「ドラフト」（案）という意味合いがあるようです。

実際、覚書の第13項目では下記のようにあり、

13 — After signing this MOU, and subject to the beginning of the implementation of paragraphs 1, 4, 5, 10 and 11 of this MOU, and the continuing implementation of these measures, the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran will start negotiations regarding the final deal exclusively on the other paragraphs.

この覚書の内容に沿って両国が最終的な交渉をスタートするというもので、まだまだ先は長いことを予測させる内容になっています。

一歩前進と言えば前進ですが、アメリカもまだ軍事攻撃の可能性に言及しており、イラン側もホルムズ海峡を通過する船舶への課金を諦めていない節があるようですから、覚書の合意など反故にされる前提なのではと思わされます。

narc

トランプ大統領の支持率が下落傾向にある中、ヴァンス副大統領は存在感を増しているようです。イランとの停戦交渉では先頭に立ち、2028年の大統領選の有力候補とも目されています。

そのヴァンス氏はテレビ出演にも意欲的でここ数日は複数ネットワークの番組をハシゴしたとか。

以下は、ABCテレビのThe Viewという番組に出演した際の様子を取り上げた記事からの引用です。ヴァンス氏がエプスタイン事件に関する見解を語っています。

Vance repeatedly pushed back when the co-hosts pointed out Trump’s past ties to Epstein. He falsely suggested that the friendship was “back in the 1980s,” when in fact the close relationship was documented throughout the 1990s.

According to an FBI document, Trump called the Palm Beach Police Department when the police opened an investigation into Epstein in the mid-2000s and said, “Thank goodness you’re stopping him. Everyone has known he’s been doing this.”

ヴァンス氏はエプスタイン疑惑は陰謀論だと考えており、トランプ氏とエプスタイン氏の関係を否定しています。発言の引用で、

とあります。ここで使われている"narc(ed)"という単語を知りませんでした。

"narc(ed)"には、

To act as an informer; snitch

(American Heritage Dictionary)

という意味があり、これが相当すると思われます。つまり、警察当局に通報する、密告する、という意味です。

"narc"というスペルからは"narco-"、つまり"narcotics"（麻薬）という単語も想起されます。実際、"narc"には麻薬捜査官の意味でも使われるようですが、動詞の"narc(ed)"はそれとは別の単語で、ルーマニア語で鼻（nose）を意味するnakに由来するそうです。

異綴の"nark"もあり、手元にある英和辞書ではこちらのスペルで掲載しています。"narc(ed)"の場合も末尾の子音はsではなく、kです。

eventual intent

ブラジルで廃墟の橋から飛び降りるrope-jumpingというスポーツ（？！）で女性が死亡するという痛ましい事故が起きたと報じられています。

安全を確保するためのロープが装着されなかったことが原因らしく、女性は橋の上から約40メートル下に投げ出されたということのようです。SNSなどで映像が共有、拡散されているということですから、益々悲劇的です。

A woman has died in what appears to be a tragic extreme sports accident in Brazil.

Three men have been arrested over the incident, in which instructors failed to attach a rope to her before helping her jump from a bridge in São Paulo state.

本来ならば、安全を確保するロープを装着するところ、このイベントの運営スタッフが3人も付き添いながらロープを付けずに橋から落下させたということで、殺人罪も視野に警察当局の捜査が行われているとのことです。

さて、記事では運営スタッフ3人について、

are culpable of homicide with eventual intent - when someone does not have the direct intention but assumes the risk of killing -

とあります。

ここで"eventual intent"とは法律用語で、いわゆる「未必の故意」と呼ばれる概念です。即ち、人を殺すという意図は無かったけれども、もしかしたら相手を殺してしまうことになるかも知れない、という自覚があったか否かが問われる事態となっています。"eventual"、"eventuality"といった単語は結果として起こる（事）という意味合いですが、偶発的な（事）、また不測の事態という意味合いがあります。

rope-jumpingというのはバンジージャンプ（bungee）とはまた異なるものらしいですが、こういった危険を伴うスポーツ（?!）での事故を聞くにつけ、やはり怖いもの見たさとしても避けたいところだと思います。（以前取り上げた、BASE jumpも参照ください。）

call time on

オーストラリアで16歳未満のSNS利用を禁止する法律が施行されたのは昨年末のことですが、イギリスにおいても同様の検討がされているそうです。

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to ban under-16s from major social media platforms including TikTok, Snapchat and Instagram.

The government will also stop children being able to livestream on "safer" sites, and stop them being able to talk to strangers on gaming apps.

スターマー首相の発言が引用されています。首相自ら、

call time on a system that's failing our kids

ということなのですが、"call time on"の「タイム」（time）とは数ある意味の中で、スポーツの試合における「タイム」、すなわち休止、中断（time-out）の意味で、このフレーズの意味するところは、

put an end to something 

(Collins Dictionary)

というものです。

このフレーズは主にイギリス英語で見られる表現とのことです。

fugazi

米・オハイオで偽ブランド品の大規模な摘発があったというニュース記事からの引用です。

ロレックスの高級時計やコーチやグッチなどのブランド服飾品など、111件に及ぶ押収品は本物であれば30億円相当になるそうです。

US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nabbed hundreds of knockoff watches, glasses and headwear in Ohio last week.

偽ブランド品や模造品のことを指す単語に"knockoff"という単語があり以前取り上げました。引用記事でも使われていますが、また別の表現として、

fugazi

という単語が使われています。これは初めて見る単語です。手元にある英和辞書には載っていないようですが、Merriam-Webster Dictionary（オンライン版）には興味深い語源解説と共に載っています。

解説によれば、この単語はイタリア人の姓Fugazziから来ているという説があるそうです。Fugazziファミリーはいわゆるイタリア系アメリカ人で、ニューヨークでリムジンサービスの会社を興したそうですが、詐欺的な広告や商売で悪評が高かったということです。故に、"fugazi"は詐欺、偽物といったネガティブな意味で使われるようになったというものなのですが、語源的な根拠としてはやや不十分との補足があります。Fugazzi一家（子孫がまだ続いているとすれば）には甚だ不名誉な話でしょう。

また、別の説明には、ベトナム戦争時に米軍人間のスラングに由来するというものがあり、

fucked up, got ambushed, zipped in (a body bag)

の頭文字で"fugazi"という、これまたやや眉唾物のような話もあるそうです。

string along

なかなか終わらないイランとアメリカの戦争です。イランの核放棄、ホルムズ海峡の封鎖解除などを条件に停戦と戦争終結の交渉が継続しているとされます。交渉は上手く進んでいる、まもなく双方が合意できる見込みだ、などといったトランプ大統領のコメントが報じられながらも一向に戦争終結とはなりません。

昨晩夕食を摂りながらニュースを聞いているとやはりこの話題。交渉がほぼ最終段階にあり間も無く妥結する見込み、といったトランプ氏の発言回数はここ1〜2ヶ月くらいの間に36回（！？）に上るということです。これではオオカミ少年ではないかと。

一方、ヴァンス副大統領はCBSニュースのインタビューにおいて、戦争終結の見込みについて述べ、トランプ氏とは異なる見方を示したということです。曰く、数日のうちに終結とはならず、数ヶ月はかかるだろうということらしいです。

このような報道を見るにつけ、交渉で有利に立っているのは果たして米国なのか、それともイランなのか、と疑問に思えてきます。

CBSニュースのインタビューでも同様の疑問がヴァンス氏に呈された模様です。

Elsewhere during his CBS Sunday Morning interview, Vance was asked if Iran was “stringing President Trump along,” knowing that the unpopular war and the high gas prices it has caused will be politically damaging for him and the GOP in the midterms.

“No, I don’t think so. Again, I think their system takes a long time to reach consensus,” Vance said.

インタビューでは、

Iran was “stringing President Trump along”

ではないかと問われたとあります。ここで使われている"string along"という動詞のフレーズですが、複数の意味合いがあるようです。American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

string along 

Informal

1. To go along with something; agree.

2. To keep (someone) waiting or in a state of uncertainty.

3. To fool, cheat, or deceive.

とあり、3つの意味があります。いずれも意味が全く異なるように見えます。

しかし、引用した記事や辞書に見る"string along"の用例を読むと、このフレーズの意味合いはこれら3つの意味合いが微妙にブレンドされたものであるように思えます。

つまり、"string along"の意味するところは、ちょうど米・イランの交渉の状況に似て、イランは合意すると見せかけながらそれを引き伸ばして待たせ、また一方では米国や同盟国への攻撃を継続するなど騙し討ちや欺きを働いている、ということではないでしょうか。

"string along"には、その気があると見せ掛けて、相手を宙ぶらりんの不安な状況に置くというという意味もあるそうです。この意味合いも含まれるならば、交渉で上手を取っているのは米国ではなくイランだということになります。

尤も、ヴァンス氏は否定していますが。

cuckooing

記事の引用からどうぞ。

ギャングに家を乗っ取られる事件がイギリスで急増しているとあります。高齢世帯や障がい者の家を犯罪者が占拠して根城にしているということなんですが、"cuckooing"と呼ばれているとあります。

"cuckoo"は鳥のカッコウのことですが、家の乗っ取り行為を指す動詞になっています。

Cuckooing - named after cuckoos, who frequently take over other birds' nests to lay their own eggs - is expected to become a specific criminal offence by the end of the year, carrying a maximum five-year prison sentence.

家の乗っ取りを意味するようになったのは、カッコウという鳥の雌が他の鳥の巣に卵を産む習性があることに因むようです。

このようなカッコウの習性に因み、不義理を働く女性のパートナー、つまり「寝取られ」を意味する"cuckold"という単語もあります。

名詞の"cuckoo"にはこの他、愚か者の意味でも使われ、カッコウという鳥は英語では甚だ不名誉な扱いです。

promise the moon

アメリカでサッカーのワールドカップ大会が予定されています。世界各国からの観戦客の訪問が想定される中、ニューヨーク市が詐欺に遭わないよう注意喚起を行っているそうです。

The city is warning tourists set to attend hot local summer events such as the World Cup and America250 to keep their eyes open for scammers — who are already in full swing prepping for the onslaught.

Investigators have already uncovered more than a few tourist-baiting scams, including some involving tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon and delivering far less and pedicab drivers ripping off customers, the pols said.

スポーツイベントなどの興行に出てくる詐欺としては、まずはダフ屋が思い浮かびます。また、無許可で客を乗せる違法タクシーなどでしょうか。

記事で、

tourist-site ticket peddlers promising the moon

というくだりがありますね。ここで使われている、"promise the moon"というのは不可能なことを約束するという意味の慣用句です。

月（the moon）を約束する、というのが字句通りの訳ですが、月とは月旅行を指しているのでしょうか。現代ではあながち不可能な事ではなくなりつつありますが。

frail

アメリカにはメディケイドと呼ばれる、主に低所得者向けの医療保険制度がありますが、制度利用の新ルールが物議を醸しているようです。

メディケイドは障がいや重篤な病気のために働くことができない人たちの医療を扶助していますが、新ルールではその条件の審査が厳しくなるということのようです。障がいや病を抱えながらも働かなくてはならないという状況に追い込まれるということにもなりかねず、患者団体などが異議を唱えているというものです。

この件に関する記事のキーワードはずばり、

frail

という単語です。

"frail"（フレイル）という言葉は最近は日本語でも普通に使われますね。か弱い、虚弱（な）というような意味です。

この"frail"という単語を辞書で引いてみると、語源欄にはラテン語fragilem、fragilisに由来するとあり、これは壊れやすい、脆いという意味の"fragile"と同語源です。（ラテン語の動詞frangoは破砕する、の意。）

"frail"と"fragile"はいわゆる二重語と呼ばれる関係にあり、同じラテン語を語源としながら、英語では全く別の単語として生じたものです。

butt heads

米アラバマ州から日本を訪れていた男性が行方不明になり、大規模な捜索に発展しているというニュースを読みました。

家族4人で京都を旅行中だったところ、長男のウェストンさんがひとり行方不明に、ということなのですが、どういう事情があったのか。記事のくだりを引用します。

The Alabama family had been traveling in Japan for a week by then. But travel frictions arose: Weston, a passionate naturalist, had butted heads with his mother over her use of ChatGPT – and the natural resources such AI requires – to navigate their journey. どうやらウェストンさんは母親とAIのことで諍いになり、単独行動することになったということのようです。ハイキングや自然探索が好きなウェストンさんは京都郊外の山間部に入ったものと思われ、捜索が続けられています。

さて、今日取り上げる表現ですが、

とある部分の、"butt heads (with)"という表現です。

"butt"には複数の意味があり、辞書のエントリも5つくらい異なるものがあります。ここでは動詞で、頭で突く、押す、という意味で、"butt heads"とはつまり頭突きする、ということです。動物がお互いに頭突きしたり、角を突き合わせるイメージですが、"butt heads (with)"という表現は物理的に頭突きするというよりも、諍いになる、不和である、口論する、という意味合いで用いられるものです。

AIを巡ってどんな諍いがあったのか詳細は分かりませんが、安否が心配されるところです。無事に発見されることを祈りたいと思います。

今年はアメリカ建国250周年ということで、7月4日の記念日を前に様々な催しが企画されているようです。

しかしながら、ワシントンD.C.で開催される予定のコンサートへの出演を予定していた複数のアーティストらが、政治色の強い企画に反発して出演辞退を表明しているとのことです。

トランプ大統領は建国250年を祝して色々な計画を実行しているようです。そのひとつに、自身の肖像が入った記念紙幣の発行が挙げられますが、国の記念日を利用した売名行為との批判もあり、今般の出演辞退騒動はそうしたことと無関係では無さそうです。

以下、引用する記事ですが、出演辞退が相次ぐ中、アーティストの1人は出演を明言しているというものです。

ということなのですが、一国の建国を祝うということだけであり、政治は関係無い、という思いであるとのことです。

"simple as pimple"とは面白い表現です。"pimple"とはご存知の通り、ニキビ、吹出物のことです。ニキビの如くシンプル、単純だ、ということになります。

このフレーズは辞書には見当たりませんが、慣用表現としては定着しているようです。

"simple"と"pimple"という2つの単語の語呂合わせが効いているからでしょう。

lay into

昨日の1語"upbraid"は批難するという意味の単語でした。今日の1語、"lay into"という表現も、

〜をしかり飛ばす、非難する（criticize）

という意味の動詞句です。

"lay"という動詞の基本的な意味合いは「置く」というものですが、"laid into"という動詞句になると非難するという意味になるとは知りませんでした。

upbraid

トランプ大統領がイスラエルのネタニヤフ首相を厳しく批難、というニュース記事です。

アメリカとイランは停戦中にありますが、その最中、イスラエルがレバノンのヒズボラの勢力へ攻撃をしたことがトランプ氏の怒りを買ったもののようです。イランはイスラエルの軍事攻撃は停戦合意に反すると表明。トランプ氏はネタニヤフ氏に電話し、攻撃を直ちに中止するよう命じたとあります。

President Trump reportedly took Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to task during a Monday phone call over the latter’s military campaign in Lebanon. 

Axios reported, citing two U.S. officials and a third source briefed on the call, that Trump called Netanyahu “crazy” and accused him of ingratitude.

さて、今日の1語ですが、記事のタイトルに、

Trump upbraids Netanyahu over Lebanon

とある部分、"upbraid"です。

叱る、小言を言う、厳しく批難する、という意味の動詞ですが、スペルを見て"braid"という、また別の単語が見てとれます。"braid"とはおさげ、髪の毛を編んで三つ編みにしたりすることですが、その"braid"と、批難するという意味の"upbraid"には随分な隔たりがあるように思われます。

しかし、語源では繋がっているようで、いずれも編むという意味の古英語bregdanから来ています。この古英語には編むという意味の他、素早く動かす（動く）、急に引っ張る、振る、揺り動かす、投げるなど、動作に関する様々な意味合いがあるそうです。

相手を批難するという"upbraid"の意味合いはこうした突発的、あるいは素早いアクションの意味合いから発展したもののようです。

一方、髪の毛を編むという方の"braid"ですが、様々ある古英語の意味合いの中で編むという意味だけが残った特殊なもののようです。

"upbraid"と"braid"、意味的には全く繋がりがなさそうで、実は繋がりがあるという話でした。

pancreas

癌の中でも診断が難しく、また特に予後が悪いとされる膵臓がんですが、最新の薬物治療が注目されています。

アメリカで開発が進行中のダラクソンラシブという新薬は分子標的薬と呼ばれるタイプの薬で、がん細胞の増殖に関わるKrasというタンパク質を阻害し、病気の進行を抑えることが分かっています。これにより、膵臓がん患者の余命は倍になるという成果が報告されています。

さて、膵臓という臓器ですが、英語では、

pancreas

といいますね。語尾の-sは複数形の-sではありません。"pancreas"という単語はギリシャ語から来ており、全て（all）を意味する接頭辞pan-と、"flesh"（つまり、肉）を意味するkrasという言葉から成っていると辞書の語源欄にあります。つまり、全部が肉、という意味のようなのですが、辞書にはそれ以上の説明はありません。

ところで、研究社新英和大辞典では、"sweetbread"という単語が参考として添えられています。この"sweetbread"というのは牛の胸腺や膵臓のことで食用にされるものだとあります。甘いお菓子みたいな呼び名ですが、フランス料理では珍味、ris de veauというメニューで食されるのだそうです。全部が肉、という"pancreas"の原義は普通は食べない膵臓という部位までも肉として食べる貪欲さを言ったものなんでしょうか、勝手な想像をしてしまいました。

膵臓という日本語の「膵」という漢字は国字、つまり日本語として作られた字なんだそうで、漢和辞典を引くと確かにそうなっています。「すい」と音読みする部分、くさかんむりに「卒」という字ですが、こちらは集まる、集める、という意味だとあります。膵臓には食べたものを消化する膵液を分泌する役割と血糖をコントロールするホルモンであるインスリンを分泌する機能があり、こうした複数の役割が「集まった」、重要な臓器なのである、という説明を見かけました。なるほどと思いましたね。

明日に健康診断を控えておりまして、膵機能関連の値が気になるところです。というのも、数年前にアミラーゼ高値が出てしまいまして、その後の精密検査では問題無いということだったのですが、また出たらイヤだなあと。

ちなみに、アップル社のスティーブ・ジョブズ氏が命を落としたのも膵臓がんが原因でした。約15年前の話です。
