black box

As the recovery operation continued Thursday after a commercial airliner collided with an Army helicopter near the nation's capital, federal aviation officials said they had not yet recovered the black boxes from the aircrafts.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), the lead agency handling the deadly crash, held a briefing Thursday afternoon. NTSB member Todd Inman said "We feel comfortable and confident" that the boxes would be recovered.

The fatal crash took place just before 9 p.m. Wednesday when American Airlines Flight 5342 attempted to land and collided in midair with a Black Hawk trying to land at the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) in Arlington, Virginia.

In 1954 Dr David Warren first came up with the idea of a device that would record not only flight data but also voices and other sounds in aircraft cockpits immediately prior to a crash.

The prototype he designed in the late 1950s met with indifference in Australia but was greeted with enthusiasm elsewhere in the world.

Today flight recorders are mandatory on all major aircraft throughout the world and have made a huge contribution to air safety.

How the term was coined is a little diffuse. Some people believe it’s due to the first prototypes used by the RAF (Britain’s Royal Airforce) being black. Those first flight recorders, back in the 1940s, were black.

Other versions, however, opt for the theory of systems’ standpoint, in which the black box is an element receiving input and producing a series of responses. This is where the name ‘black box’ would’ve originated from.
(What is the black box of an aeroplane? Grupo One Air

promoted outwards

promoted outwards

Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH and the world’s fifth richest man, has coined a new phrase for those who are being laid off — “being promoted outwards, so to speak.”

The French billionaire made the “promoted outwards” comment while discussing social media company META’s decision to lay off low-performing employees, according to Fortune.

Arnault, 75, claimed that those who lost their jobs are actually being “promoted” to better jobs at different companies.
(Shane Galvin. World’s 5th richest man Bernard Arnault coins new phrase for being fired: ‘Promoted outwards’. New York Post. January 29, 2025.)

a shot across the bow

The release of Chinese AI app DeepSeek has spooked Wall Street as technology investors fear that American companies are falling behind in the race to develop super-intelligent computers.

Those fears have also reached Washington, D.C., where lawmakers of both parties have united around a policy of containing Chinese tech development. Trump administration officials said Monday that the U.S. is failing at that goal.

“DeepSeek R1 shows that the AI race will be very competitive,” wrote David Sacks, the Trump administration’s AI and crypto czar, on X on Monday.
(Why DeepSeek is a Chinese shot across Trump’s bow. Market Watch. January 28, 2025.)

a shot across someone's bow(s)

a warning to not do something or to stop doing something
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

nakedly illegal

Norm Eisen explained this weekend how he believes Donald Trump — during the president’s first week back in the White House — is fulfilling his campaign promise to act like a “dictator.”

Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in December 2023 that he’d be authoritarian in nature only on “day one” of his return to office.

But Trump has “carried that forward through the entire week,” Eisen, the former Obama White House ethics lawyer, told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki.

Trump’s Friday overnight firings of independent inspector generals “is a nakedly illegal action,” argued Eisen, who noted how they appeared to flout federal law of Congress requiring 30 days notice of and explanation for such a dismissal.
(Lee Moran. Ex-White House Ethics Lawyer Accuses Donald Trump Of ‘Nakedly Illegal Action’. Huffington Post. January 27, 2025.)

a nakedly illegal action

Being without addition, concealment, disguise, or embellishment
(American Heritage Dictionary)

nakedly political
nakedly emotional
nakedly racist
nakedly aggressive

tentpole

In a reversal of the cliché, Costco announced that soon it will no longer serve Pepsi products at its food court, so hopefully Coke is okay.

The company switched from Coca-Cola to Pepsi products in its food courts in 2013 to maintain the price of its tentpole $1.50 hot dog combo, according to CNN.

Costco CFO Gary Millerchip said in 2024 that, "the $1.50 hot dog price is safe."
(James Powel. Costco confirms switch of food court sodas from Pepsi to Coca-Cola. USA Today. January 26, 2025.)

to maintain the price of its tentpole $1.50 hot dog combo

a big-budget movie whose earnings are expected to compensate the studio for its less profitable movies
