記事のタイトルに、"au pair affair"、本文中にも"au pair"という単語が出てきます。スペルからどうもフランス語のように見えますがどういう意味なのでしょうか。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

a usually young foreign person who cares for children and does domestic work for a family in return for room and board and the opportunity to learn the family's language

と定義されています。住み込みで家事、育児を手伝う傍らで現地の言葉を勉強させてもらう外国人を指すもので、"au pair"はフランス語で、英語にすると"on even terms"（即ち、公平、同等の条件で、の意）ということだそうです。

カタカナではオペアというそうなんですが、不勉強にして知りませんでした。

ヴァージニアの事件は、同居していたオペアのブラジル人女性と不倫関係にあった容疑者が共謀して妻を殺害したというものです。
