xenophobic

日本は"xenophobic"だ、というバイデン大統領の発言が物議を醸しています。

"xenophobic"とは、外国（人）を嫌う、という意味の形容詞で、"xenophobia"という名詞から来ています。

ご存知のように、-phobiaというのは何かを恐れる、嫌うという意味で、病名の〜恐怖症（例えば、高所恐怖症を指すacrophobiaなど）に使われます。

接頭辞xeno-は、異人（stranger）を意味するもので、ギリシア語から来ています。

President Joe Biden on Wednesday called close US ally Japan “xenophobic” at a Washington, D.C., fundraiser, just weeks after lauding the US-Japan alliance at a state dinner.

バイデン氏の発言は、「人種のるつぼ」とも言われ、多様な人種、移民から構成される米国と、移民を受け入れようとしない日本を対比させたもののようですが、経済的に行き詰まりを見せている中国やインド、さらにはロシアなどと共に十把一絡げにして"xenophobic"であることが問題だと言い放っており、波紋を広げています。

"xenophobia"の和訳ですが、外国（人）嫌い、というのは上に書いた通りですが、排外主義、外国人アレルギー、という表現も英和辞書には見られます。

移民を受け入れたからといって経済が好転するという単純な話ではないとは思いますが。
