クリスマスを考える（2） ― Xmas

昨日は、Hanukkahという、クリスマスと同時期のお祝いされるユダヤ教の祝日を取り上げ、"Merry Christmas!"というお決まりのご挨拶がタブーになる場合があることについて触れました。

今日取り上げるのは、これまた我々日本人にもお馴染みですが、

Xmas（あるいは、X'mas）

という語です。デパートや店頭の広告や看板、チラシ、グリーティングカードなど至るところに見つけることができますが、この語（正確に言うとスペル）がタブー視されることがあることをご存知でしたか？

勿論、日本人同士ではほとんど問題になりませんが、欧米では、特にキリスト教関係者からはこのスペルが忌避される傾向にあるそうです。（ちなみに、X'masというのはかなりまれで、Xmas（アポストロフィの無いスペル）がほとんどだそうです。X'masとスペルするのは日本だけ？）

何故タブー視されるかですが、諸説あるようですが、そもそもキリストという尊い名前を省略系にすることの不敬さ、といったものから、“X (cross)”という字とその意味（"cross out" ― 線を引いて消す）から不穏当だ、というものまであるようです。商業化に反発する立場からの意見が大きいようです。

しかしながら、これには反論もあり、Xという字が、キリスト教の長い歴史の中で既に、Christの省略形として使われてきた事実もあるようです。（このあたりの議論については、詳しくはWikipediaなどにあります。）

私も知りませんでしたが、Xmasという用語を使うのは海外の人とのGreeting Cardやメールのやり取りでは気をつけたほうがよさそうですね。

In the spirit of the season, let’s turn to other lighter topics. 

For example, I came across this interesting bit of history concerning the use of the term “Xmas” (an abbreviation of the word “Christmas,” the X substitutes for the word Christ).

As any English dictionary will show, this word is spelled with a capital “X” without an apostrophe after the X. According to the Merriam-Webster New Book of Word Histories, it was first used in the 16th century, back when it was taboo to casually or irreverently use the term “Christ.” Much farther back in time—or about 300 BC—the Jews considered it disrespectful to pronounce the divine proper name, which was “Yaweh,” or “Jehovah” in Hebrew. Thus, X was used as a symbol for Christ. “It derives from the Greek where “chi” (X) is the initial letter of Christos, the Greek form of Christ. The word Xmas is usually pronounced like Christmas….

In Latin manuscripts, Christus was often abbreviated by using the first two letters of Greek Christos, chi (x) and rho (P). When chi and rho are superimposed upon each other a symbol for Christ is formed. This symbol has had wide currency through centuries of the Christian era.”
