"YOLO"という略語があるのをご存知でしょうか？
私は初めて目にしたので知らなかったのですが、"YOLO"とは、
You Only Live Once
の頭文字を取ったもので、日本語にしたら「人生一度きり」ということになります。人生はたった1回なのだから、その人生を楽しもう、というような主義を言うようです。

チャンスの意味 ― chance
ここのところトランプ次期大統領に関する話題ばかりで恐縮ですが、今日もトランプ氏が出てくる記事です。
いよいよ明日、大統領に就任しますが、現在の住まいはニューヨークのど真ん中にあるトランプタワーと呼ばれる豪邸ということで、物見遊山に訪れる観光客も多いそうです。勿論私は行った事もないのですが、ニューヨークはちょっとだけ訪問したことがあり、大体街並みがどんな感じかのイメージはあります。
そのトランプタワーというのは日本でも有名なティファニーのショップが隣接しているそうですが、トランプ氏が当選してからは周囲のセキュリティが凄いことになっているらしく、ふらっと立ち寄るという雰囲気でもないそうです。次期大統領ともなれば当然なのですがその警備に係るコストが1日50万ドルにもなるということですからバカになりません。
一方、ティファニーは警備のあおりを受けて売り上げが14パーセントも減ってしまったそうです。つまり客足が遠のいてしまったのです。

経営陣はティファニーのカラーともいえる、あの独特の青色よりもブルー（憂鬱だ）というのはシャレに違いありませんが、当事者には深刻な問題です。
さて、記事の引用部分、最後の段落のところで、
Tourists... not only have to get through security cordon, but also chance coming into contact with protesters and throngs of media
という部分に注目したいと思います。
ここで、"chance"は動詞として使われていますね。（いわゆる、"not only... but also~"の文型です。）
そして、"chance coming into contact with..."となっており、これはいわゆる「動詞プラス現在分詞形」です。
動詞の"chance"については、"chance to do"、つまりいわゆる「動詞プラスto不定詞」の方が馴染みがありましたので、この"chance ~ing"は私には見慣れない用法でした。
また、むしろ"have a chance of ~ing"という使い方の方がスタンダードなようにも思ったので改めて辞書を引いてみました。
それで改めて勉強になったのですが、ここでの"chance"は"risk"（リスク）に言い換えられるものだということです。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

リーダーシップと干渉は紙一重！？ ― hands-on
大統領就任をいよいよ明後日金曜日に控えたトランプ氏に関する記事が目立ちますが、本日も関連記事から引用します。
自動車メーカーに留まらず、医薬品メーカーにもプレッシャーをかけていることが先日も報じられていましたが、今日のニュースでもやはり製薬会社の合併に絡んでの話題です。
When Donald Trump convened the CEOs of German chemical company Bayer and U.S. seed giant Monsanto at Trump Tower last week, they made the usual small talk.
Trump then asked specific questions about the $66 billion merger they are in the middle of, according to people briefed on the meeting. The companies committed to $8 billion in new research and development, along with 3,000 new jobs and a commitment to keep 9,000 other jobs in the United States, if the merger goes through.

とまず出てくるように、トレーニングプログラムなどが、座学では無く、実践的な内容のもの、というような意味で用いられます。が、ここではちょっと意味が違っており、記事のタイトルに"noses into"とあるように、「干渉」の意味合いが強いようです。
ランダムハウス英和辞書では、陣頭指揮を執る、第一線で活躍する、敏腕の、といったポジティヴな意味に加えて、干渉的な、口出しする、というネガティヴな意味も載っているのですが、恐らく記事のコンテクストに照らして後者の意味合いで使っているものと思います。
興味深いことに、"hands-on"の逆である、"hands-off"は「無干渉主義の」という意味があり、"hands-on"はこの"hands-off"から派生したとされています。（研究社新大英和辞典）

レモンで乳がん啓発 ― stand-in
最近は乳がん検診についての意識が高まっていますが、早期発見に向けて海外での取り組みに関する記事を目にしました。
レモンを使って啓発するというその内容とは・・・。
We think we know what the signs of breast cancer are, until it comes to checking our own breasts - then we're not so sure.
Is that a lump I can feel? Should I be worried about the dimpled skin there? What exactly am I feeling for?
Those were the concerns of Corrine Beaumont, a young designer, who created the 'Know Your Lemons' campaign, which has been shared more than 32,000 times on Facebook in the past few days.
She lost both her grandmothers to breast cancer at the ages of 40 and 62 and when she found very little information on the signs of breast cancer to look out for, she felt compelled to come up with a solution.
Lemons became her stand-in metaphor for breasts as she tried to create a simple, visual way of showing what breast cancer symptoms can look and feel like.

股引き ― long johns
先週末より日本列島には寒波が押し寄せ、大雪となりました。わたしの住む関東平野部では雪が積もることはありませんでしたが、かなり寒いと感じます。
寒い日々がこれから続きそうですが、寒い中心温まるニュースをどうぞ。

The man, only known as Bob, went outside his Michigan home to get a log for the fire on New Year’s Eve when he slipped and broke his neck.
Wearing just his long johns, slippers, and a shirt, he lay paralysed in the snow and unable to move before his Golden Retriever, Kelsey, came to his assistance.

約19時間もの間、犬は飼い主のそばを離れず吠え続けました。飼い主の顔や手を舐めて暖めた結果、男性は凍傷にすらならなかったそうです。
男性は自宅の裏庭にちょっと出たという感じでしょうか、軽装であったと報じられています。
着用していたのは、"long johns, slippers, and a shirt"とあります。この"long johns"とは、ランダムハウス英和では「（冬季用の手首･足首まである暖かい）長い下着」となっていますが、いわゆる股引きのことです。

Wikipediaによりますと、"long johns"と呼ばれる下着はイギリスで生まれたそうで、225年間に渡って製造しつづけている、いわゆる老舗が存在するそうです。ヘビー級ボクサーのJohn L. Sullivanが似たようなウェアを着用しリングで活躍していたらしく、その名前からつけられたのが"long johns"だという説があるそうですが、眉唾だそうです。
フランス語の"long jambes"（long legの意）がなまったもの、という説が一般的だそうです。
