11月の中間選挙を前にして騒がしくなってきました。

長引くイランとの戦争とそれに伴う国内経済状況の悪化などを背景にトランプ大統領の支持率は低迷しており、共和党の候補らはトランプ氏との距離を置く傾向が見られるとのことです。つまり、不人気な大統領の累が自身の選挙戦に影響することを恐れているという訳です。

候補者らにとってトランプ氏は、"kryptonite"だ、というのです。

The pressure is only increasing with the midterms less than two months away. Trump’s approval rating is stuck under 40%. while several POLITICO polls have found that half of Americans think his deportation agenda is too aggressive and that even Trump’s loyal MAGA base is losing patience with the Iran war, given the economic costs.

“These candidates know how to read a poll,” said a GOP strategist working for Republicans in races around the country who was granted anonymity to speak candidly. Referring to Trump, they added: “They know he is kryptonite.”

Some other battleground Republicans who received Trump’s endorsement have since deleted or minimized references to the president on their campaign websites.

この"kryptonite"という言葉はスーパーマンに由来するのだそうです。アメリカでコミックとして人気を博したスーパーヒーローですが、この"kryptonite"という緑色の放射性物質に触れると能力が発揮できなくなるというストーリー設定があり、特定の状況下において立場を危うくするもの、というような意味合いで用いられるようになったものです。Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

a substance that causes the comic-book character Superman to become weak when he is exposed to it

と定義されています。
