この数週間のトップニュースに、マサチューセッツ州の母親が幼い子供3人を殺害した事件があります。出産後の精神障害を患ったが故に及んだ殺人事件ともされ、陪審は合意に至らず、審理がストップしているというものです。

上記に引用した記事はそれとはまた別の事件で、今度はイリノイ州シカゴで、やはり母親が2歳児の首を締めて殺害したという事件です。この母親について、

とのくだりがあり、"invest"という動詞が引用符付きになっています。

"invest"という動詞から真っ先に思い浮かぶのは、投資する、という意味ではないでしょうか。しかし、ここではその意味だとおかしなことになります。

小生は（老眼もあって）この箇所の"invested"が"interested"に見えたのですが、あながち間違いでは無かったようです。

別記事を読んでみますと、"invest"は、関心がある（interested）、という意味合いで使われていることがわかります。また、この"invest"というワードのチョイスは検察官の発言のようです。

"invest"という動詞にそのような意味があるとは知りませんでした。辞書を引いてみますが、そのような意味合いを載せているものは見当たらず、唯一（と言って良いかどうか）Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの定義の中に、

to involve or engage especially emotionally

というものがあり、これが近いかと思われました。

"invest"という単語は接頭辞in-とvest（服を着せるという意味のラテン語）から成ります。（カタカナにもなっている、袖の無い上着のベストも同じ語源です。）

"vest"は動詞にもなっていますが、その意味は財産や権利などを授ける、付与する、といったものです。地位のある人の特別な装いは、権力や財力があることのメタファーともなったという訳です。"invest"の「投資する」という意味合いはこうした財力との意味合いに関連があります。

"invest"という単語にも、服を着せるという意味合いは残っており、（物の回りを）覆う、纏わせる、という意味を辞書に確認することができます。よって、ある対象に関心を抱く、そのことを考えるのに時間を費やす、というような意味合いも理解できるところです。（"invest"の「投資」の対象はお金に限らず、時間や精力などもありますね。）
